    I just started hand collecting the slugs in a big bucket, and then I drive them out to nature and dump them. I already have about a third of the amount of slugs than before and it's only been two days! I'll keep doing this until there are hardly any, it's actually quite easy, and very satisfying!

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  5 місяців тому +3

      That’s actually what I’ll end up doing - I was thinking of putting them to work in the compost heap - but maybe they’ll get back to the patio by the following day!

    Greetings from Kentucky Paul. Your patio area looks great. I love all the hostas in pots. I actually potted a "Patriot" hosta last week in set in my shade border. My patio is in full sun. I have several hostas in the ground. Lucky for me slugs and snails are not a problem in my area. However, I am battling the dreaded Japanese Bettle right now with my roses though. Hi, re snails and slugs eating hostas, I lightly boil a few garlic cloves, drain the water and pour through a fine seive. When cold transfer solution to a spray bottle and apply to the hostas. Very cheap, organic and safe to use with pets and children. It works too, they hate it!

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  5 місяців тому

      That is possibly the best solution of all. I did that a few years ago but got out of the habit - will start up again. I heard that when it rains it ‘washes’ it off - don’t know if that’s true or not.

    Love the shot of the two birds at the beginning Paul. You are lucky to have a hedgehog in your garden. I haven't seen one for years yet they were quite common when I was a child. I have a fox which visits and he comes right up to my patio doors and I once saw him on my shed roof of all places. He stood there for about five minutes and just had a look at his surroundings. Have you still got your robin?

      I was really pleased when my cameras picked up a hedgehog last year and now it visits at least 3 times a night.
      Ha, foxes love sunbathing on shed roofs!
      My robin is OK and I see him now and then but he disappeared when I went away on holiday - even though a neighbour came each day to feed him. I think he’s sulking but I’m sure he’ll be back…hope so.

    I love your patio, not to mention the house, of course! Everything looks great, even without scientific names ;-) The nighttime footage is really interesting. Most people have recently been fighting with slugs, snails, aphids etc. So have I. Last night and the night before my garden was "visited" by a number of wild boar, I suppose piglets rather than adults judging by the size of the hole they made in my fence. We've mended the fence but we can't "reinforce" the whole perimiter. The damage is relatively minor, they "hoovered" all the fallen apples for which I'm quite grateful!

I'm sure you can guess why we've started seeing wild animals in the city parks and gardens. The problem has escalated recently primarily due to the rapid loss of habitat. I feel really sorry for them, less so for my fence. Cheers, Paul!

    Yikes those slugs! There must be a reason they exist, but I can’t imagine what it would be! Your potted hosta look beautiful on your patio. What do you do to make your Acer so full?

      I know Marti, they are impressive- at least the chunks out of the leaves are. They are one of nature’s scavengers and clean the place up - looks like their job this year is to clean my place up of hostas 🤣
      The first acer just grows like that - I repotted it with nice ericaceous compost a couple of years ago and it really filled out.

    Hi, can you please let me know how do you take care bay plant? Do you put outside in summer and inside in winter?

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  5 місяців тому +1

      Hello, I leave the bay out all year - I'm in zone 9a. In the Summer I put it on the patio and the Winter I move it to the front of the house next to a sunny wall. It's always a little warmer up against the house. It has survived my Winters although as you can see, the terracotta pot is breaking up because of the frost!

    Hello Paul, I enjoyed this video very much.Wonderful to see the wildlife enjoying the bounty you provide,especially the little hedgehog. A quick question,I noticed your euonymus by the pond had a few stems whose leaves were not variegated. Will they eventually become variegated and if not do you prune them out. I planted one after seeing yours and I notice the same thing on mine.,just wondering whether to prune or leave it alone.

      @paultsworld  5 місяців тому

      Hi Douglas, good question about the green leaves on the euonymus. This happens with all sorts of variegated shrubs and trees. I find that any reverted-to-green growth is more vigorous and doesn’t change to variegation. So simply trace the growth back as far as you can and cut it off. I do this all the time and it makes for a nicer looking plant.

      @@paultsworld Thank you Paul. I thought that would be the proper way to go. Nice to have it confirmed. It’s a lovely shrub. I always learn something new from watching your videos. And as a bonus they inspire me to do something in my garden . Take care.

    What plants can I put in my garden that stay all year round and don’t die off

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  5 місяців тому +1

      That’s an interesting question. Your best bet are evergreen shrubs which don’t lose their leaves in Winter. Ones that I have are pyracantha (firethorn), the gold euonymus you saw in this video and many of the viburnum.
      Google ‘evergreen plants and shrubs’ to see a good variety of plants. Try to choose ones that flower nicely in the Summer.
