How to Make a DIY Porch Swing - Welded Steel and Built to Last!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 тра 2020
- Welding a steel porch swing to replace my old pallet wood porch swing. In the video I'll show how I welded the basic frame, painted the steel and added composite fence boards as the decking.
Overall it was a quick and simple build and turned out great! Hopefully it'll inspire you to tackle a similar project!
Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any questions.

Joe, the porch swing looks fantastic and really comfortable. If you made it 7 foot long then you could lay down on it and have the ladies in your life bring you a cold drink as required 😁. Can I echo the sentiment of another writer and thank you for bringing a small ray of sunshine and hope into these strange times. Take care and keep yourself and your family safe.
UK Tony thank you Tony! Believe me, I did consider going for a longer version. But the scraps I had only allowed for this width...haha. But I do think it would be a nice time to have the girls bring me a drink while lounging!
And thank you for the kind words! I’ve got more videos nearly ready in short order but I’m just limited by the computer issues at the moment. 😀👍
Dang Joe, that's a heck of a lot nicer and far better built than anything you'll find online or at any big box store and well worth the money in supplies and time to build.
Great job fabbing up that new swing!
Thanks for sharing and as always keep building👍
Building with Todd thank you Todd! It sure is worth the time to me and my girls! We are enjoying it everyday! Well, except for that couple hours in the late morning when the sun gets that front section of metal😂
@@homesteadonomics Like a hot seatbelt lol
Nice design even with the metal hot spot in the middle. 😬I ran across one of your greenhouse videos and thought you looked familiar! First time I saw a video by you was the rain water garden and really thought it was ingenious! My daughter and son in law live just north of Tucson and I’ve been bugging them to store some monsoon water in their very big backyard (preferably underground). Thank you for your service, I hope you and your family are doing ok during this crisis.
Nice one Joe, looks comfortable and strong. A friendly advice if you don't mind. Drill some holes in the back of the pieces where you attached the composite and the chain mounts. Water can seep in where the mounting hardware is and collect inside the tubing. I had similar issues before and now I drill "vent holes" any time I break any surface. As for the economics of DIY. I always chose DIY. I don't even know when I bought anything like this at the big box stores. I am the worst consumer. Im looking forward seeing your next project. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent video, I'm now looking to build the same
Olesya&Barrie Gunn thank you!
Sir, (in my observation & thus concluding as my humble opinion, lol) in spite of your wife being in charge, I love your attitude! Keep up the great work and keep doing these videos!
Just bought a ton of cedar to build a porch swing this weekend. Now you release this badass metal one? How can my channel compete 😥
oh man, your cedar one will be awesome! The great thing about wood is that its comfy to sit on, doesn't heat up and more folks are likely to search for one that requires only wood. It'll do great! :D
You've got some quality stuff too, man.
@@homesteadonomics I appreciate the words of optimism! Been a fan for a while! Thanks for sharing.

It looks great, durable, and probably matches everything else there, but I like the look of the pallet swing. The rustic quality i guess.😁 I imagine the splinters are no fun though.😆
Green Dream Project I did too but it was on its way to ‘rickety splickety town’. However another person commented that I out of make it into a garden bench so I may just do that. Sand and seal it really well and add a bunch of screws to bolster it and then place it on some concreted posts.🤔
I love the look and can't wait to take a swing on it. :)
Blackberry Hideout well, get in Soobie and come on dowwwwwn! Oh yeah, can you pick me up a DD large hot with 4 cream and sugar😉
@@homesteadonomics You bet. :)
Great lookin swing. I wouldn't be afraid to have that on my deck.👍
4 Seasons BBQ thank you! 👍😀🙏
Oh no, say it ain't so Joe, another Mac circling the drain! I hope it can be brought back to life buddy, keep the episodes coming.....
Daniel Oliver same issues with my main computer. Working on an old 2013 MacBook which is working fine but limited in what it can do....ie it won’t take anymore updates so I can’t get the newest movie software. But it’s partially me because I always get these as refurbs or something like that so I’m never starting with anything top notch😂
@@homesteadonomics I believe MSI, something like that is a robust pc that is great for video editing and relatively cheap! Not sure how easy to get that version of software, otherwise I feel your pain when Apple or Microsoft stop their support.
Very clean looking indeed! I didn’t even think about the metal bars getting hot on your legs in the Arizona sun. Ha ha
Bruce A. Ulrich thanks for checking it out Bruce! Yes they do get slightly hot but it’s only for a couple hours. After that it’s in the shade for the rest of the day😀👍
Great looking swing👍🔧
96ChevyDually6.5L thank you Chevy!
Nice work. Wish I had your skill set. Thanks for sharing your projects. Have a great rest of the week. Peace!
peter debad thank you Peter! You have. A great week as well! 😀👍
That was a nice and quick proyect..
samuel romero thank you! 😀👍🙏🙏
Nice! That looks sharp. The other one looked cool and I can see it in a corner in the yard with legs and holes in the seat for big flower pots to sit down in.
Dawn M hmmm....now you might have me making it into a garden bench🤔....thank you😀🙏
@@homesteadonomics lol your welcome! It's a nice way to keep the memories around. I hope to see a video on it!
@@homesteadonomics I do think a garden bench is a great idea as the pallet swing does look so awesome
I don't know if you have RAM inserts like a PC but my computer was recently doing some very, very weird and distressing things. So I went inside, vacuumed everything out (Got out all the dog hair and dust bunnies! Heh) and that helped the noise level of the fan but didn't fix my problem. (be sure to wear a grounding wrist bracelet connected to the frame)
So I opened up the tower again, looked ponderously around and on a hunch, pulled all the Ram modules out and re-inserted them and just like magic, that did the TRICK!!! Seems that even those gold plated prongs have to be disturbed to break resistance build up between prong and plug (corrosion?) after a few years! So I don't know if that helps you out but it sure kept me from having to buy a new computer- which made me VERY happy because I'm not quite ready to do that just yet! Cheers!!!
Awesome Family chair
Mighty fine work you did there Joe! as always. Thanks for sharing!
Wow looks great love the look its not a big deal it just really stands out to me. The clips that connect the chain are upright on one side and upside down on the other.
Great job on the porch swing Joe! Thank you for sharing the video with us!💖👌👍😎JP
Hi Joe love the project. As I watched I wondered about metal and the Arizona sun, but you covered that!! Stay healthy and as always Bear Down!
I'm amazed at your skills!
nice work Joe
Great looking swing! I made my own door and window security hardware because the commercial stuff was too expensive and I liked my designs better. Started with an AC "Crackerbox" stick welder, took a few classes at the community college and ended up buying my own 200 amp Mig welder. Still occasionally enjoy making things and really enjoy your channel.
I enjoy all of your project videos and can appreciate and respect all of your hard work and attention to detail.
Randy Ketcham thank you for checking it out Randy!
New porch swing looks awesome! You are definitely a creative guy with some mad fabricating and welding skills. Thanks for continuing to share and inspire. Blessings
Looks fantastic
Beautiful craftsmanship, it came out great. Be well, stay healthy and thank you for sharing.
BRILLIANT, like many other projects of yours. Thanks for sharing
Nice looking porch swing and hopefully many years of enjoyment for you folks!👍
Another great project, Joe! That should last a lifetime.
Very nice. Love projects like this.
Great video and the bench turned out great. It says a lot for your original bench lasting as long as it did. It is great seeing it as a place for the whole family to enjoy. I hope you and yours are staying safe and healthy. Thanks for sharing.
My friend, Excellent job! 👍
Great job Joe! I've knocked out a mess of small projects being stuck home. You've got a great looking family there brother..
You are building whatever in my mind asking myself how to do.
It looks beautiful.
Dersu Uzala thank you!
Nicely done
That's so clean
wow awesome swing!
T455 thank you!
Excellent professional jobs
The swing looks really good! I think making it from metal is a great idea and while it may cost more than buying one from a store you can design the swing the way you like it and you have the satisfaction of making it yourself. Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks to you, I just got a great idea 💡!
Great build! Did you happen to pre drill the holes for the composite decking fasteners? Or were they self tapping? Thanks!!
Excellent Work, Sir!
Bensons Speedshop thank you benson!
You're Welcome!
Definitely the right project to pop up at the right time. I'm a big guy 6'2 350lbs. Premade swings max out well before that. So I appreciate this immensely!
Great looking swing.
1lipsey thank you!
That turned out so nice.
Really like this design! Thanks for the video - Im off to make one :)
That looks really good and comfortable. Great job.
Raynola Dominguez thank you Raynola!
Wow! Fantastic work!
Natasha J. Layton thanks for checking it out Natasha!
This is a great build and I would like to build one for our garden for my family to have a relaxing swing. How I wish if you could share the plans for this. Thanks for sharing your great works.
great build. thanks
roadkill stew thank you!
Took the words right out of my mouth ! CLEAN!!
James Woenker thanks for checking it out James!
Nice job. I'd never have thought about using Trax. What a great idea.
Mark Busching thanks Mark! I like the composite stuff because it doesn’t warp and seems to hold up really nice! But I will say it’s quite a bit more expensive than just wood.
Great video a Joe, I love the design! Not going to make one here in Scotland anytime soon though 😂 but I love to watch your channel 👍👍👍
Gerry M thank you Gerry! Yes this is kind purpose built for our climate...haha....I imagine you’d have some different criteria in Scotland 🏴😀👍
Looks real fine Joe. It looking real fine. 😚😚
Boy that turned out great.......😎
Awesome job! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Fred McIntyre thank you Fred! 😀🙏
Wow that's one amazing weld job! 😯👍 Can I hire you for the container home I'm building? 😉😁 Great job and that work shed is looking great!
Think Outside The Container thanks! But I’ll have to take a rain check on the container build until I can retire from my day job as a firefighter. But I imagine you’ll have it built by then😉👍
Great looking swing! Really good proportions. What is the angle of the back?
Bruce Cummings thanks bruce! If I remember right it was like 10 or 15 degrees. But that’s just off the top of my head. I’ll probably go and check it later today and add a pinned comment at the top later with the actually angle and dimensions.😀👍
Beautiful
Custom Southern Arms thank you!
Your projects are always so cool!
Thank you!
Good lookin porch swing, great job ! I hope you get those computer issues sorted out soon, ya'll take care.
I love your videos they are a ray of sunshine in these bleak times.
Merced Cali oh thank you so much! I greatly appreciate that! Rest assured I’ve got a few more videos almost ready to go once I get my computer issues figured out😀👍
Nice! Great job, Joe!
Thank you Mark! The only drawback to the metal is during a couple hours when the sun hits it before the porch casts a shadow. So it's pretty nice for about 22 hours of the day ;)
thanks for watching Sir!
Joe
Bro your videos are awesome,
🥰Love from Pakistan 🇵🇰
Ashfaq Sheikh thank you! And great to hear from Pakistan! 🇵🇰😀👍
Great stuff as always Joe! My dad would make the metal framed furniture like that quite often, because "the glue dries faster for metal" (= Cheers my Friend!
Canadian Sasquatch haha...like that! Metal glue sure does dry faster! And it’s literally ‘red hot’ popular these days😉👍
That came out nice!
weetreebonsai thank you!
Wonderful wonderful channel!
Cool video mate
This swing looks sturdy and strong, so it could last long.
unit woodworking thank you!
@@homesteadonomics You're welcome. Take care
Good job my man...!!
Anura Yapabandara thank you! 👍👍
Need a drink holder nice build
Dwayne Lejeune that might just be a future upgrade. I’ve already been thinking of something that kinda flips out but stays hidden most of the time😀👍
Morning Sun? What are you doing sitting around during Daylight Hours???? All kidding aside another Built to last top of the mark Project:)
It may be more cost effective to buy a ready made swing, but there's no satisfaction in that. Looks GOOD! Why buy when you can build?
Definitely an upgrade. Looks awesome. Are you going to repurpose the pallet wood swing or have some firewood?
Loved it 😘😘
Very nice Swing :-)
Very nice, clean & well thought out. Your yard looks great! Good luck with your Mac.. might be time for a new one? 😉
Big Sky at Night thank you Steff! Yes this computer stuff is eating me alive....working on my 2013 MacBook Now until we can figure the money for a new desktop Mac. I’ve been long enough on a Mac that I don’t thing I can go back....not to mention iMovie is what I know😂
Any plans for this brother? Love it, nice job. Thx.
well done
Thank you Neb!
Very nice!
ErlefromVa thank you!
Very clean, looks awesome! Surprised you didn't just rely on the tape considering how strong it is
Tú esposa a de ser una mujer muy feliz, sabés hacer muchas cosas geniales, los felicito.....
Good job
Samir Al Balushi thank you!
Chú rất giỏi rất hay
pretty nice swing. can you make a couple of how to welding videos?
I think you were just looking for an excuse to play with your welding equipment. It is a terrific project. Thanks for sharing it. Stay safely sequestered on your property. Wishing you and your family Peace, health and happiness. Cheers,
Joe, your's will last a long long time. Those at the big box stores don't last and "somebody else made it".
Cracken video mate cheerio
Daniel W thank you Daniel!
I knew it ! It's always the quite ones that are in secret a wild swinger.
Congrats
You are amazing... I think this summer I might try to build the go kart you made
Thank you! and good luck on the kart build! its a big project but a super fun one and I think you'll enjoy it :D
Joe
@@homesteadonomics do you know how fast it goes when completed?
Awesome swing definitely wanting to build me one now. Any chance you can shed some light on what parts you used the 1x1 and whats parts you used the 1x1.5? Also what angle did you make the bottom of the back rest cuts at? And what angle you cut the arm rest? Thank you
Really Nice job! What's the angle between the seat and the back ?
👍solid- niiiiiiiice job 👍👍👍
JeepdogsRCbikelife 1 thank you!
If the opportunity arises can you do another water harvesting video? Have you done anything new in that arena?
What type of metal did you use? I have a nephew that can weld and am thinking about a decide for window awning but I’m curious on the cost of the metal first. Loved the swing and am a new subscriber.
