- This fence was made using overlapping technique for better privacy.
As many of you may know that planks tend to warp and shrink over time and picket boards end up with gaping slots. In my personal opinion, overlapping is probably the easiest way to create privacy. So what's your take on this? - Навчання та стиль

So rectangular tubing isn’t used for the doors correct? It’s only used for the fence side right? So the flat part where you drill the wood what side is it?

Nice fence. I'll be doing something like it in the very near future that I had already been thinking of. One big driver is not having wood fence posts, that in a few years, rot in the post holes. If the steel/iron is the frame, it will last and fence boards can be replaced fairly easily as needed.

Согласен насчёт петель, надеюсь они ещё не скоро заскрипят, а так как у нас сухая погода почти круглый год то наверное только придётся смазать их через лет так 300 или 400 😂.
Нашему правительству очень понравилось всех держать на карантине и теперь наверное ещё не скоро всё вернётся как было прежде. У нас большевики пришли к власти тат что нам тут в штатах скоро хана. Не исключено что это приведёт к гражданской войне. Надеюсь что этого не будет но кто его знает что будет дальше.

Great looking fence and I wanted to do something similar but have the boards run horizontal until i saw price tag…😱. I would still do it for a small area like this but not my situation

For anyone using this awesome design to build their fence, I have a few suggestions:
1- Try to avoid using the flat bar on top and bottom, use rectangular tubing. This will save you a lot of time and it will look much nicer since you will not need to cut&grind the screws off and repaint the frame. This is my biggest regret. You cannot tighten the screws later on, if you do, you'll have to grind and repaint ! It is a little bit more money but you could use a 1"x3" rectangular tubing behind the 2"x2" tubes for a clean look. Or you can use 1"x2" tubing if you don't mind the stepped look.
2- Try to find panels that are already built and integrate them into your frame design. Cutting, staining, positioning, screwing in the picket boards take FOREVER. The cheapest pickets at Lowes (~$2/pc) are rough mill cut and dimensions vary about 1/4-1/2".. You may be able to find the extreme weather ones pretty easily, only problem with them is the pickets are stapled on both sides of the horizontal board, so you do not get full privacy.

3- Use self drilling screws. Saves a lot of time.
4- Use countersink drill bit after the hole is drilled to avoid cracks/splits in the wood
5- Use galvanized metal posts
6- You might need a cross bar on gates so that they do not sag. I had the most difficulty with making perfectly square gates for my driveway. This video skips that process which is very critical. The opposite corners distance on the gates need to be equal.
7- If you want self closing gates, buy the hardware first because you may not be able to make them work later on. I had to improvise with my design.

I watched video, great stuff. I couldn't figure out where you used the rectangular tubing at?? The 1 1/2 x 3/4 tubing?? .
Rectangular tubing goes in the center or the middle of the fence. Before you weld it in place use another square tubing (placing it vertically) to make sure your top and bottom flat metal pieces are flush with the middle rectangular tubing. In other words, the middle rectangular tubing that runs horizontally needs to be offset enough so that your wooden picket boards will be flush with the top, middle and bottom metal. Hope that helps. The overlap works great and I have it on two sides of my yard. One neighbor did not go that route on a replacement they did and poof, we have no privacy there.
I am curious about the bottom edge how it works with the fence boards and how well water drains away from it.?
Since we live in California, we don’t have that problem with rain or moisture or mold per say. We mainly deal with dry rot and fence boards warping during hot summer months. In places where moisture is an issue I would recommend maybe using some other type of material? At one point I even wanted to use corrugated galvanized sheets of metal but I realized that it would look too industrial and decided to go with wood boards. For beginners I would recommend getting a flux core welder to practice your welds. MIG welders are great for these types of projects. I’ve tried stick welder and it was not for me. Many hardware stores carry them at different price ranges depending on your budget and the type of outlet setup you have at home. I had to run a new 240 outlet 50 amp breaker for more powerful unit but if you can only use 110 outlet that will also work but you won’t be able to weld thicker metal. This fence cost me about 2 grand in materials. Not sure how much it would cost to hire someone to do this job but my guess would be maybe 4 grand? Prices vary depending on where you go to buy your supplies and who you hire to do this job. I’ve decided to do this project myself because I wanted to keep the cost down. This part of the fence came out to around 2K bucks. My other fence on the other side of the house was about the same price but I used more metal. In other words, before the pandemic it was cheaper to make but during the pandemic prices went up on metal and picket fence boards. Yes sir I did use decking screws and drilled a pilot holes for each screw. It was time consuming but worked out great. Screws were also painted already so it was no brainer.

Awesome job! Could you provide the size tubing and flatbar you used for your fence? I see 4x4 tubing but not sure about what sizes for the base and top of the fence that connects the two posts.

Sorry I missed your reply and just now saw it. Main post square tubing is 4 inches each side. Tubing that goes across the top and the bottom which connects main posts are 2 inches wide. The flat bar is also 2 inches wide.

Spacing between the posts is approximately 7 1/2 feet but you can make it to whatever you like to your own specific preference. I believe when I purchased the 2 inch square tubing, the length was 8 feet so I had some wiggle room to cut at exactly the right size between the posts. You’ll have to do the math before making the fence. Good luck with it and let me know how it turns out.

Took me several weeks to do this project. The best thing to do is to take a staycation and focus on finishing the fence.

@@balabay77 thanks for the info. I have a question that you? I want to install the type of fence that you built in my front yard. The Sacramento county code states that you may build an ornamental fence up to 6 feet, but only wood fences in the front yard can only be 4 feet. Is the fence you built considered an ornamental fence or a wood fence? I believe it’s an ornamental fence considering you used metal post and beams but used wood planks to fill in the gaps. I want a 6 foot tall fence for my front yard so I want to go ornamental but I also want privacy I have small children and dogs.

Not sure what type of fence they might classify it as but as long as you don’t go over over 6 feet than you should be all right. People use many types of materials to build a fence. There’s chain link, wroth-iron, corrugated galvanized sheet metal, plastic/Vinyl panels, and brick or stone construction. So it all depends on your personal preference but if you’re worried that your fence will stick out like a sore thumb in comparison to your neighbors fence than maybe go with picket boards? Call the county for clarification.

Great video. Last time you cut shiplap grove into the fence boards. This time you used board-on-board. Why the change? Which hardware store did you get the hinges from? I searched on Amazon and they cost more online.
Last time I did ship-lap grove and thought that wood boards would not shrink as much but I was wrong. After six months in some spots I could see small gaps forming that’s why this time I just went with overlapping my picket boards. It will cost more to overlap but definitely worth it. Would you consider using square tubing or the 1 1/2 x 3/4 on top and bottom instead so you can screw in the boards in and not worry about grinding the screws from the back?
In my first project I’ve used rectangular tubing at the top, middle and bottom of the fence. Unfortunately I was only able to place boards side by side (used shiplap groove) because there wasn’t enough room for overlapping picket boards. By using flat metal strips in my next project, I was able to make enough space for overlapping technique. I didn’t mind extra work by cutting off sticking out screws because was going to paint the entire frame anyways so it all worked out fine. You can make your project however you see fit. There’s no right or wrong way of doing it. In retrospect, I should’ve done my first part of the fence similarly to what I did in this video. You should definitely use tube instead of metal strips. I am about 80% done on a 89ft linear front fence using this gentleman's design, I really wish I did a couple things different.
Avoiding the grinding and painting is definitely worth it. The grinded spots do not look good at all.
Plus, If you replace a picket in the future or tighten the screw a little to close up some gaps, you will most likely have to use a different screw and have to cut and repaint...

Good question. If you are very serious about welding and planning on continuously create new projects than you can’t go wrong with Lincoln Electric or Miller Electric mig welders. If you just want to make one project than go with cheap harbor freight units. They work ok but can’t be used on regular basis because they have a cooling off cycle which is very annoying when you’re trying to weld nonstop. In other words, Cheap units are good for short welds. Anyways, about mentioned units are great for beginners and as you progress, maybe down the line you’ll buy more professional models? Good luck with your choice of welder and I encourage you to get that valuable skill of splicing two pieces of metal together lol. I’ve tried stick welder and it’s just not for me. Usually its meant for thicker metal so if you are planning on welding thinner metal then MIG or flux core wire is for you. Thanks for watching and commenting.

No sir, I was using flux core wire welder in all my projects. If you get the chance to weld with both types of welders, you’ll see how easy it is to weld with wire versus stick welder. The beauty of using wire is that you can do one continuous weld if your machine can handle the amperage but with stick, once the electrode is spent than you have to stop to grab another one and that’s time consuming. I’ve learned how to weld by watching UA-cam channel called weldingtipsandtricks
That guy is a professional when it comes to welding. He is for more advanced welders but he explains different types of methods to make beautiful welds. Check him out for useful techniques and don’t be shy to check out other UA-camrs who also review many welding machines. MIG welding is great for beginners but TIG welding requires advanced, in depth schooling to master proper techniques to weld like a pro. All in all, welding is not that hard to learn and as a matter of fact, I didn’t take any special courses to learn how to weld but learned everything from UA-cam tutorials. As always, safety first, then buy everything you need like consumables, safety clothing, metal materials and just go to town on practicing different types of welds. Don’t be stingy with practice welds because you’ll need to learn how to regulate heat so that you won’t burn through the material. Good luck and let me know how your skills progress. I'll do more research, but at this point, you've all but sold me on the flux core wire feed welding. It'll have to work on 110v as I don't have 220 available in my garage. My garage is primarily a woodshop, so I'll have to create an area that's free of sawdust and imagine I'll have to acquire some sort of welding table. I"ll check Harbor Freight Tools but will also look for used on Facebook Marketplace and eBay. I'm guessing a brand new setup will be quite costly. nice job again. another change was going with the .120 wall thickness in the posts as opposed to the .250. No sign of problem with the thinner wall?(bearing the weight of the swinger) What's the length of that gate? I see some fence/gate makers go with a thinner wall for their framing (.063 to .095), any reason you chose .120 for the framing as well?
Appreciate you question, regarding framing, I had some 2x2 square tubing left over from previous project so I decided to buy the same thickness. I found it much easier to weld thicker wall tubing rather than thinner walls, I don’t burn holes through thick walls. In my first project I chose to use .250 posts for main gates because they were six and a half feet in length so I figured that thicker wall post would be more sturdy? I feared that heavy gates might start sagging over time. So far so good with no issues. In My second project the gate was only 6 feet in length so I went with thinner wall posts. Since I was making these projects for myself, I wasn’t cutting corners as much as contractors do lol. Cheers mate.

Im still trying to get the lice out of my house, just keeps coming back. That is why , i dont start any home improvement projects. I dont even get sleep from the biting in my bed., otherwise, i would be on a project every week. But, whatever, bug i got, fleas or whatever, i get bit and crawling all over me, I DONT EVEN HAVE PIECE OF MIND, TO BE ABLE TO THINK A PROJECT THROUGH.

Sorry buddy I missed your comment from a month ago. To be honest with you, I don’t think metal will go down in price any time soon. Everything comes from China and we are at a mercy of supply chain. You can probably shop around in your area and maybe get a good deal if you buy in bulk. The way things are right now I would just do the fence now if you really need to replace your old fence but if it’s still holding up ok then wait till housing bubble bursts and construction slows down. Demand on materials will diminish and you’ll probably save some money on metal as well as picket boards. Good luck with your project and let me know how it turns out.

How much did you spend on the materials?
I had some square tubing left over from my first project so basically this fence (in this video) came out to approximately 2 thousand dollars in materials. During pandemic prices jumped significantly on metal and wood so building a fence was a costly endeavor. Not sure what the prices are right now but I bet it’s still not cheap to fabricate this type of fence. To hire someone to do this job will cost 3 times as much. How deep do the post need to be? How far apart should the post be?
Posts need to be at least 2 and a 1/2 to 3 feet deep and you can make them as far apart as you like depending on the length of your horizontal tubing. For example, if you prefer that your posts are 12 feet apart than your can buy tubing ahead of time in that length or if you prefer 8 feet apart than make sure to get get your tubing in that length. It’s easier to cut horizontal tubing than to try and figure out where to put the posts so that being said, set your posts 7 feet 3/4 inches apart and just cut the cross beams (horizontal tubing) to fit in between the posts. How did you calculate the correct number of pickets between posts?
To tell you the truth, I didn’t know exactly how many picket boards I would need so I purchased approximate amount and once I knew how many boards it took to fill in one section that’s when I knew exactly how many more boards I was short. I believe I was only 10 picket boards short so it was just a matter of going to the lumberyard and staining them before installation. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Question how far apart are the 4x4 studs? is it 8 foot or 10 foot?

My spacing between the posts were slightly less than 8 feet. Technically you can make any spacing between the posts you like, it all depends on your preference.
Some people prefer longer sections, some stick to 8 feet sections. I basically measured my entire length of the fence and figured out approximate spacing of the posts so that the sections were evenly spaced out. In my case it worked out to less than 8 feet.

I’d just say use galvanized nuts bolts and washers as opposed to the deck screws. You can paint them at the same time as everything else metal, but before installation. Pop a chalk to keep your holes lined out. Looks sharp though and I appreciated the insight on the metal frames!
