How To Catch Sunfish & Bluegill From Small Lake Or Pond

  • As promised I have started the fishing video series. I will be doing a separate video on each type of fish and each type of location. This will include lake fishing, pond fishing, creek and stream fishing and even river fishing.
Each type of water requires different fishing gear and techniques.
Todays video is about catching bluegill and sunfish from a small lake or a pond.
Ponds are generally full of weeds and they are not very deep. This presents a situation where you have to use weedless type fishing lures and bait.
Today I am using a little bobber and a jig head with a piece of worm on it. The bobber keeps the jig head from snagging up in the weeds and the weight of the jig head helps me get the line out there to the fish.
The worm helps attract the early season fish and keep them on. Right now the water has just recently warmed up and the fish are still coming out of their dormant stage. They are not very aggressive and need to be enticed to bite.
In summer I can catch these all day on a spinner bait or a jig with rubber worm but right now those will not work.
I do not like still fishing because more often than not the little fish will eat the bait off your lure before you know it. They are good at this.
I like to cast the line out and then very slowly retrieve it, stopping occasionally. This motion draws the attention of any fish nearby. Stopping from time to time allows the fish to catch up to your lure and grab it in its mouth.
When a fish is near your lure let it sit for a second. If the fish bites then let it take the lure down a second before pulling sharply to set the hook.
If the fish does not bite immediately then a little bit of motion by reeling in the line a bit often makes the fish strike.
When you catch a panfish such as a bluegill or sunfish, there is a safe way to handle them so you do not get poked by their sharp back fins.
The fins have very sharp spines on them which will poke you badly if you are not careful.
To get a fish off your line first slowly run your hand down the line. Move slowly so you do not stress the fish and make it flop. It should hang there relaxed for you.
Get a firm grip on the tip of your hook or lure. Keep it firmly in your hand. Now slide your other hand down over the fish, with its back fin facing your palm. Slide slowly form its nose down until your hand is halfway down its back. This action will push the back fins into their resting positions and allow you to get a firm grip on the fish so you can pull out the hook.
I hope you enjoyed this video. I have some fish to clean and cook.
    Please like, share and subscribe.

Oh Yeah, casual pan fishing in a nice back wood pond or lake or a river on a lazy, hot, summer, day....Reminds me of Tom Sawyer & Huck Finn, two of my most favorite reads...Fishing is a good survival mode type skill to learn and know, here I come and go again, fishing and fantasizing, used to pan fish a lot in my early teens with friends, some great evening campfire stories and memories...LOL ;-) Nice catches Troy!!!

Nice looking place to fish, you can tell just by looking at the weed beds and water clarity, and those bluegills are nice.

When fishing for bluegill and crappie- if using live bait do you try to set the hook after a first bite? or wait until the second? I've been waiting for the 2nd and wonder if i'm missing fish. I figured if it was live bait, that jig/wax worm could be in it's mouth while i'm waiting on the 2nd bite? Idk..and do you just raise the pole to set the hook? Thanks in advance.

If you lose the swivel and tie the jighead directly to the line it will have a more natural action and you will get more bites.

mhauck99 Sorry for the late reply. Have not been back to this video for a while.
I prefer the telescopic rods because they are perfect to keep with you at all times. Otherwise for panfish, just a small hook with a live worm works wonders. A small spinner bait works sometimes. A bobber and hook with worm is good. Or a small hook with a little piece of rubber worm moved up and down.

+mhauck99 I fish mainly for bluegill a decent ultra light spinning combo is what i use. The one I got for my kid was a Shakespeare Mine is an older Shimano on a vintage ultralight speed stick The Shimano Sedona 1000FD got good reviews from field and stream  downsizing the gear to the size of the fish makes it a lot more fun and when you hook a creek smallmouth bass youwill have the time of your life I also have a few telescoping poles from B&M(think fiberglass cane poles)

Thanks for sharing your video it is great. I tell my wife (a cityslicker from Tulsa OK ) about my adventures catching bass using baby bluegill we caught with tiny hooks using little white bread balls as bait at a golfcourse pond near Hollywood Fla in the early 70's. I like your more remote local as it looks more peaceful, like river fishing on the Little Peedee river at Galivants Ferry SC , my favorite place to catch "Brim" as the locals call the bluegill. Thanks again from North Florida

TR Tech Tactical When you do your beginners video, please include which type and # line to use ... and how to load /wind the reel. After I got my new reel I stood there in the store for the longest time trying to remember which line, now I can't remember if I should tie it to the spool or just hold it on and start winding. Silly, I know because I have literally fished my whole life (1st fishing trip I was 3 months old) but it has been too many years working and not fishing... I still haven't loaded my new reels.

    • @mollydolly869
      @mollydolly869 9 років тому

TR Tech Tactical I am inclined to not tie it off... my thinking is better to loose a running fish than snap that spool off the reel... ? Oh, and this beginners video is a good excuse for an explore in a nice sporting goods store... to compare lines. :)

A dozen crickets won't last 20 minutes if Bluegill are around. Probably won't last 5 minutes. Bait shops sell crickets by the tube which equals 100+ crickets per tube. Wal-mart carries them now days in cups of 50. It's better than nothing , but no comparison to a true bait shop selling tubes of crickets.

This was fun watching you. Loved it that you showed what kind of gear you used..jig head w/worm and tiny bobber. You always use a yellow head jig ? The rod you used casted real smooth too..although I prefer using a closed reel as opposed to an open one. What weight line and kind did you use?

Open reels often cast further and smoother and can reel faster and smoother. Closed reels are better for beginners who don’t know how to use open reels

Ive been fishing for a month, and all ive used is a worm on an ordinary hook and ive caught well over 100 fish

That is my preferred bait as well but on an island full of pine trees and dry earth its hard to find some worms.
