I’ll be honest, ultrakill fits that description more, terraria however as I see it is a beautifully chaotic fever dream with one of the best modding communities out there
I am a game developer, and I really look up to the team of Re-Logic. Terraria is one of the games that made me want to become a gamedev in the first place and create worlds. As a young child, I played the game very simply, and even though I was playing only a small portion of the game, I had so much fun. (I never even defeated the Eye of Cthulhu and even thought that it was one of the strongest bosses). Today, I have 600+ hours in Terraria and it made the years 2020 and 2021, years which were particularly bad for many people, the happiest years of my childhood (my life does continue to be happy, but the happiness curve was extremely steep). When I played the game during long school breaks, it hits different so hard in a way that other games can't even do.
And so far, I have only been talking about vanilla. I don't have much experience with mods (other than Calamity mod), but that's fine, because even the base game itself is so awesome, it brought enough joy for me.
You cannot compare Terraria to Minecraft; they are two different games. And I'm pretty sure that the development of Terraria began before Minecraft, so they did not copy each other. Just because two games are similar, it does not mean that someone copied someone's homework. Both are brilliant million-dollar games but great in different ways.
I see people talking about the gameplay but nobody is going to talk about how well edited terraria trailers are O_O. ANOTHER REASON TONS OF PEOPLE TOOK TIME TO FIND IT.
One thing I *love* about Terraria is the _freedom it provides._
Don't like _swords?_ Try *spears!* Don't like _spears?_ Try *YoYos!* Don't like _YoYos?_ Try *boomerangs, lances, flails!*
Maybe you _don't like melee?_ Well don't worry, there's *3 other fully playable classes* to choose from each with their own *unique weapons* and forms of fighting. Be it magic staves, tomes, throwing knifes and shurikens to summoning wands and sentries, shotguns, bouncing grenades or rocket launchers, *we got all!* You can even _fight bosses in weird ways_ like *launching fireworks* at them or *setting up traps!* So you don't even have to use a weapon! It's amazing.
And _this_ is *just one* of the *goods sides* of _Terraria, truly a legendary game._

You don't even have to actively fight the bosses. Put on a spore sac, thorns potion, star veil, clorophite amor, summons, bone skull or anything else and it will fight and defeat the boss indirectly.
Also, the fact that there is 192 block types, 43 furniture sets (around 10 or more in each I think), 372 enemies, 566 UNIQUE WEAPONS (not including accessories), 33 major and mini bosses each granting loads of items and a fun fight and so much more. It's not the fact that there is so much weapons and accessories but that almost every single one is unique in its own way even if it is just the speed, damage, size etc. (via the myriad modifiers).
There is so much content and possibilities in Terraria. Compare that to a game I still really like, Minecraft, which has no unique human NPCS (aside from a few villager clothes changes), 6 swords, a crossbow, a bow, a trident, a hammer, 31 - 75 mobs (apparently I couldn't find an exact number), 2 bosses, 6 armor sets, no accessories, no vanity and barely any customization etc.
Surprisingly minecraft still has a alot of freedom, but Terraria has no many feature and mechanics that it actually is overwhelming sometimes (and they keep adding more).
This game ruined my life.
i convinced my best friend to get it and we did a playthrough, but that was like a year ago and he just wont stop playing it. he has around 4000 hours and doesnt want to do anything else and he's genuinely addicted. Can you make a video on how to get your friends to STOP playing terraria? please? :D
make him addicted to stardew valley instead

I love the concept of actually going back to areas you have already explored. The game changes entirely in hardmode, experiencing it for the first time is amazing
it’s like if Minecraft grew like 3x in size after beating the ender dragon
The first exprince is placing hallow next to Crimson and placing mud next to hallow to stop spreading crimson
honestly, playing thiz game with friends makes it a new experience every time and thats what i love

Replay-ability, a loving dev team and one of the best foundations for a modding community are probably my top reasons as to why. I know you elaborate on such in the vid but just to slap a bare bones definition to it. (Keep in mind I typed this up at about the 1 minute mark and yep, no surprise those are the big ones you mention too)

I know this game for 10 years or something and started playing it on mobile, and now i have around 900+ hours on vannila and 450+ hours on tmodloader and ofc also played pirated version just because i wanted to play it so much on pc. Better game couldn't exist imo
13 years in this game 35k total hours across all platforms and tmodloader best 10$ I’ve ever spent no game has ever made be this addicted it’s literally become my way of life

I have grown with this game and it is still my favorite game.
I've been playing since a couple of months it was out and I'm still playing (like, in a playthrough rn)
the first time i played terraria was on my brothers i-pod and now its my favourite game of all time also something i like about terraria is that the updates dont feel bad(if you get what i mean) and instead of me not really being bothered about new updates a start a new playthrough practically every update
I just started my first proper modded run, more than vanilla calamity.
Turns out theres a tun of mods, and the world has never looked this cool! I'll drop the mods when i get home if you're looking for a change of pace
I’d recommend thorium or stars above after you beat calamity. Both are great content mods

I feel like the fact that it's so hard to figure it out on your own helps a lot, you have to get into the community at least a little bit to find out how to progress at a decent pace. even experienced players learn about new things and weapons they haven't tried by interacting with each other

I’m replaying terraria around every year its that time and its a blast as always
I stopped playing for months to play more of the new call of duty games, and I just keep coming back I don’t know why, but probably because there is a cooldown after you first play it that you have to keep coming back before the cooldown ends
And people are still like "meh meh meh terraria is 2d minecraft meh meh meh"
3000 hours, and gaining more everyday, truly a masterpiece of a game
700 hours and counting, and i'm going through a whole new playthrough too.
and even with all that, i still come back to the wiki to learn new stuff.
Do yourself a favour and save summoner class playthrough until you've done everything else 😂😂 once you go summoner it's almost impossible to wnat to go back lol

I got the game on PS4 and thought it sucked. Fast forward like 5 years and I get it on my computer as well as my brother’s computer like 3 weeks ago and I have played it EVERY SINGLE DAY 😂 (Though I took a trip to Texas so I have not played it this week)
As someone who has played the game on PS4, PC and even 3ds, i can say that the console controls are iffy, PC controls very well (if you button map well, inventory is F, fight me), a d 3ds works well with its second screen even though the version is old.
The reason why I can't stop playing is:
Minecraft
Playing different classes in a loop and saying "I can do better"

I actually regret playing this game so late but at the same time I'm very glad I didn't pirate the game years ago, it makes the experience magical and worth it, what I did prob respect the devs or something since I can see the hardwork and passion being put in the game
Terraria is my favorite game! A lot of content, updates, and mods extend its lifespan even more... I think the reason it still has so much success is that many games of the same genre have been released since, but none have matched it. Terraria is still way ahead.
How desperately i wish this game had a competitive pvp scene.like something a little more than capture the gem.

What I love about this game is how the most weird things could be added and it fits in with the game. The lead dev decided to add poo blocks because of a popular Reddit post.
In all honesty, I downloaded this game two weeks ago and already sunk 54 hours into the game. Compared to others there's a mixed feeling of shame and confusion.
Started playing on February and already have 500 hours
I started a few months ago but in my first 2-3 weeks I alr had 300 hrs
I swear I have like 290 hours or something on the base game not even counting Tmodloader and I feel like I just blinked and started at that time
Terraria shares one thing with minecraft. Each of its worlds you atart are their own stories with history specific too them, especially when you play with friends [which I highly recommend!].
But what it does better is give you a goal to work for, and each step of progression in terraria feels like its own achievement, it truely feels like youve accomplished something, and you're getting better at the game.
Oh also I love building in terraria, I'm the builder of my friends.

I was jokingly trashing this game to my friends like half a year ago about how the game's not even that good and i won't touch it again in my life, but started playing it again 2 weeks ago. I've done everything this game has to offer yet that itch to start another ranger and summoner playthrough just didn't go away.

Honestly I see why terraria is way more successful than other games. It is not driven by money and it's developers were very thoutfll to make it seem like a very interesting experience and they don't lock updates

I keep hearing ppl say how amazing terraria is, ive played a ton of minecraft before and am a HUGE fan of platformers so this would be a no brainer, I just somehow never got to play it. I will probably forget about it again tho and not buy it on steam cuz im broke rn. Also I love the calamity mod ost, the modding community is insane, I never got to see what its about tho.

I would actually disagree, I think terraria is really hard to get into, you basically need the wiki to make any significant progress, That isn't to say terraria is hard, but its not beginner friendly. I think the best way to get into terraria is through friends.
Anyone who claims to not use the wiki is either a beginner, a masochist, a veteran or a liar.

@@darksidegryphon5393 I started out on the xbox 360 version way back about 9 years ago without any wikis whatsoever. I'd say it made me appreciate the games pace.
@user-hf8ps6ks4t I understand your opinion, but I personally often slowed the pace down and learned new mechanics of the game when I wasn't making much progress. For example trying new builds like mage or melee. The guide and the beastiary are also great for learning more about the game without the help of a wiki.

Terraria and Minecraft's respectove development are a good example of the difference between staying indie and being bought out by a greedy megacprporation.
The only difference between Minecraft and terraria is people complaining the new Minecraft updates are modded while terraria fans are happy with whatever they get Minecraft needs to update more like terraria and plus people could just play previous versions of the game if they don’t like it

My first introduction to Terraria was when the Yogscast played it very early in its development. At that time minecraft was really popular, and Terraria was seen as just a 2D minecraft copycat. However, after that time terraria went heavy into the fantasy and even RPG elements, adding tons of bosses, exploration, and a soft class system with lots customization, proving that it was not just a minecraft rip off but was its own thing.
But what I find really funny is that over the years its actually been MINECRAFT that's been looking more and more like TERRARIA, when terraria was innitially seen as a minecraft copycat. Classic case of the student surpassing the teacher. (Though if im not mistaken MC is still more popular than TER.)

I’ve got a starter home, 4 npcs and copper armour and a gold sword.
What should I do now?
Go mining for more gold and make some armour, then try to go for the jungle, and search for underground chests to find the boomstick(a shotgun).If you find a shinny heart take it and use it, it will increase your health, then go for the eye of cuthulhu(to summon him you need the suspicious looking eye,which is impossible not to get when searching chest for loot underground)
And it is also good to make a gold bow, and make some special arrows by combining normal arrows(10 of them) with falling stars
And then, if you don't know what to do, check the wiki and search for guides on what to do(they are really helpful),or go to the in game guide, by interacting with him and then pressing help, he will tell you some clues on what to do next

Not really a fair comparison considering that Binding of Isaac has more than 1 game and also includes multiple DLCs. Terraria is just one game updated throughout the years.

Eh, GD is more of a player-created content experience than Terraria. It's like Roblox or Gmod, the players create the new in-game content more than the dev. Highly different from Terraria, since the game offers no in-game content editor and players would need to rely on modding. So it's not as reliant on new updates as Terraria.

You don’t get stuff like that in videogames anymore which isn’t a good thing. If all games are gonna go the route of a red dead 2 and essentially be a glorified movie with realistic graphics, that’s not a good thing because the whole point of art is to be transformative and stand out, terraria does this more so than any modern game tenfold despite being a 2d game. It has so much to do that actually feels meaningful instead of being restricted to just being the “realistic” game that many modern games try to be

@@jaswanthvardireddy2243 Red dead redemption 2 is exactly my kind of game. Gaming is part of the entertainment industry so I suppose it's like comparing boxing with golf. There's no right or wrong just what appeals to the paying public. I don't like arcade games or boss fights and I particularly don't like platform games with poor graphics. If other people like you get enjoyment from this type of game then that's fine with me but I don't understand it.
