Written by Townes Van Zandt in a cough syrup/flu induced sleep. Dreamed the words/music, woke up, wrote it down. Then went back to sleep, woke up up hours later and immediately played it through. He said nothing in it ever changed. Pegged the entire song in his sleep. My favorite version is Townes and Emmy Lou Harris.........haunting.
I hope I never stop finding new hidden gems from mumford and sons! I wish I could see them all in person, but I'll settle for Marcus mumford, please come to Tucson AZ! Or Phoenix!
Literally only just discovered this song in 2019 and I see alot of people hating on it in the comments, but I think it's such a beautiful rendition of the classic song, Marcus uses the strengths of his amazing and powerful voice and just completes the song
I like this version. I see a lot of people complaining because they did it wrong, but hey it's a cover and they're just doing their own rendition of it
Yep. I like TVZ's original, emmylou Harris, nanci Griffith. Mumford n sons didn't butcher it. Sounds good. let this beautiful gift of a song fly even more and shine on. I hope TWZ is resting peacefully, he battled addiction. He had a dream about this song and woke up, and wrote it in 15min. Tecumseh valley is a great Townes Van Zandt song too.
I’m going to be that guy, and I’m sorry, but drop these boys and listen to Townes instead. The tempo they inserted on this cover gives it a boot tapping wholesomeness to it. I clicked play with the right intention, I was ready to see what they did. But, well, shit, there’s nothing wrong with a very sad man singing a sadly beautiful love song. I’ll never understand why people rarely choose to cover a song out of respect and appreciation for what Townes and every other artist of that very particular time did, but instead make a lighthearted, easy listening mess of it. They can write all the catchy, hopeful songs they can, and good for them to do it, but leave some of this alone. Careful, people may even end up in eternal fire for mucking up the timeless. God bless Son Volt, Wilco and Uncle Tupelo for giving the songs the respect these old artists screamed for.
Mum & Sons succeeded with a creative rendition of Townes Van Zandt's beautiful yet simple expression of love and the meaning of human connectedness across time and space. PS: according to TVZ, Loop and Lil were parakeets... :-)
I think it was doc Watson who originally sang this song. And I wondered how my fav contemporary folk band has covered it. Thanks uploaded you made a little dream come true
Love it! As to previous comments, at least they stay true to the lyrics - ticks me off when they change the Loop and Lil lyrics... that is part of the story of the song. Don Williams and Emmylou for example.
the Bass player is to be having surgery and they canceled a tour in the US. just saw it on you tube today but dont know when it was posted, I dont get here very much, june 11th, 13'
I can’t even read y’all’s comments and I’m in my early 30s, which I understand is old for all of these ‘Marcus’ fans, but come on everyone. Love this band, but please don’t ever mention the word country or Townes when you talk about these folks. Hate me, call me the names I know are coming, but for the love of all that’s decent in the world, understand where your music comes from and respect the daylights out of it. Otherwise, well, turn your FM dial back on and turn that cruise control back on. I mean this all in the sweetest way. Truly!
@enchantedcheesemuffin HURRAY! - For your upload of this Mumford & Sons version of a great TVS song AND that you don't own anything! Ownership is an illusion anyhow! That you totally rock, however, is not!!
lol I totally see what you mean, but that's kind of against the spirit of what TVZ was doing (the idea of tradition, covers, etc) plus whether you like a particular cover or not (and some offensive covers have been done, certainly) it brings attention back to the original artist, and if anyone deserves (and rewards) such attention it's Townes.

gotta agree with ya. The contrast between Townes voice and Emmylou is what made that the classic one. this one's good too, different but good.
Great cover. Nobody writes them like Townes. We miss him. The best of Texas.
I keep finding these hidden treasures. they never fail to move me. Marcus' voice just instantly makes me smile...they r magical.

This Van Zandt song was our wedding song. It is beautiful and was played on a hammered dulcimer and guitar.
Beautiful! ❤️
Such a great song, it lights my heart and make me cry... how amazing...
I like this version. I see a lot of people complaining because they did it wrong, but hey it's a cover and they're just doing their own rendition of it
Brainer Gamer Exactly ,that's all ,they aren't pretending to make it better ,just another way of doing it ,I like it this way

I absolutely love this band his raspy voice wow
Someone needs to tab this! Truly breathtaking.
Thanks a lot , M&S , for doing the cover , in your own style, of such a lovely old song .
Really good stuff. But I feel a bit sorry for the uploader, cause he or she do not own anything. Give im a job please! ;)
:-))). Thanks, you made my day!
This comment makes me laugh every time I see it
Lmao this is great
You’re right, caseyjobob H. It’s not funny people. It’s funny words.
A truly great cover of the hottest pen to put on paper , Townes is honored.

This chorus is just beautiful

I love the whole family portrait thing going on there-- daddy Marcus, mommy Ben, big brother Teddy and little brother Winnie... they're so adorable...
i hope this band keeps going and going. i never want them to stop they are too amazing
His voice could sing me off a ledge any day.
Same girl 🤣❤️
I think it was doc Watson who originally sang this song. And I wondered how my fav contemporary folk band has covered it. Thanks uploaded you made a little dream come true
Great cover😊
Beautiful!!
dear mumford, please release a cover record. everything you touch is gold.
j t so true
Beautiful - love it x
HOW HAVE I NOT HEARD THIS?!?
Yes! I always loved this Townes Van Zandt song
Although I am a long-time fan of Mumford, I have only recently discovered this song. It's really good!
I think there comes a time in everyone's life when they need a song to pick them and express how they're feeling up and this has to be mine!
This is a great song for Marcus, his voice sounds so beautifully pure than usual, but still with that gorgeous scratch that shows so much emotion.
I like the slow build up. Good stuff.
Marcus Mumford....Cant do no wrong!! Brilliant voice...Have to wait n see what the third album is like!
Magical ,,,

The one from the broken circle breakdown is the far best cover ever done

This is wonderfull!!!
Right so I recognised David Silva, Peter Dinklage, and Hitler's tall, friendly younger brother. But who's the werewolf?
A very high Kiefer Sutherland?
Reefer Sutherland?
Speed Has Everything To Do With It lmao. Best comment t ever

Schitterende uitvoering. Townes zou het ook geweldig vinden !!
Excellent
Hello.
Thanks for sharing you dear!!
luv it
Is this the best cover of a TVZ song? Nope. Still, I kind of respect them for knowing enough to WANT to cover Townes.
the Bass player is to be having surgery and they canceled a tour in the US. just saw it on you tube today but dont know when it was posted, I dont get here very much, june 11th, 13'
BEA-utiful :D
amazing cover
Ascolti solo cover e mai pezzi originali ahahah
ma cosa stai dicendo!? se ascolto le cover è proprio perché prima ascolto gli originali, svegliaaaa!
What a great family picture! Ben needed to lean back a bit though...
love
family portrait!!! :)
Anyone think that the structure of this song and in some parts sounds like Lovers Eyes?It could be just me.
Sofia Carlo there's definitely a few parts in it that remind me of Lovers Eyes which incidentally is my fave Mumford song
Just discovered this cover, gives me chills. Which album is this cover on?
No album :( only found on youtube
I like this version too and this after listening to Don Williams and EmmyLou Harris. I know I misspelled her name my apologies.
murdered at the end
They make the best covers!
The guitar rythem they have goin on is captivating
They can do no wrong! I know the original version, too.
is that one on youtube...can't find it and would love to hear it

I remember this song from EmmyLou Harris and Don Williams.
I'd love to find it for my weeding dance, where can i find it to bay and telecharge it, can someone help me please? ;)
if you are on I-Tunes search this version or the original by Townes Van Zandt and download it then burn it to CD
Not sure how I feel about it. It doesn’t suck.
Love the cover but love that picture more. Lol
Very nice, but even nicer is the version from the motion picture Broken Circle Breakdown.
that would be the incomparable too soon departed townes van zandt
Waarom staat deze niet op Spotify’s ??
Gr8 M8
townes van zandt!!!!!!!
good cover. totally different take on Townes version, but good nonetheless
Townes Van Zandt is tge original artist
Townes Van Zandt :)
People should have to apply to cover Townes songs.
lol I totally see what you mean, but that's kind of against the spirit of what TVZ was doing (the idea of tradition, covers, etc)
plus whether you like a particular cover or not (and some offensive covers have been done, certainly) it brings attention back to the original artist, and if anyone deserves (and rewards) such attention it's Townes.
I agree. You know if Bob Dylan covers someone the bar is high. And Dylan should have had to apply as well.
If Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, and Weylon Jennings ask you PERSONALLY to cover your song... yea, you're kind'f a big deal.
