      I like how monolith it looks, a nice break from mostly rounded phones pretty much everywhere that making them look almost similar to each other. Well iPhone recently also have flat sides as well, so that basically makes up 2 in the market, but Sony Xperia is sharper and no notch. Just a sleek slab of a smartphone.

      It's actually made my upgrade choice ridiculously hassle free overthe last few years. Once I filter out notches, no expandable storage and jack-less handsets, the options I have with my provider are pretty much Sony. I've been happy with them to date and am looking at Sony again this time around.

      The 5 series is the little brother of the 1 series. Flagship specs at a smaller scale. Has a few downsides though, like a 1080p display instead of 1664p, but it keeps the same processor. The 5 IV will be unveiled later in the year.

    • @derAtze
      @derAtze 2 роки тому +30

      Gotta respectfully disagree with the powerbutton. I am a proud owner of a 5 mkIII and the amount of times i have accidentally unlocked my phone in my pocket is insane and it's SUUUPER annoying. The detection if the phone is in your hand or stored away isn't reliable at all. That's one of the few real downside of this phone, except a few software inconveniences where the UI/UX isn't built nicely. But for everyone who enjoys having native control and creative options with their phone camera, i cannot recommend this device enough.
      P.S.: the 1080 screen is still so good that you don't see individual pixels until you're like 5 cm close to it

    • @derAtze
      @derAtze 2 роки тому +9

      Explanation afterwards: the powerbutton/fingerprint sensor is on the side of the phone, so just by resting your Hand on the phone, you're much more likely to accidentally have your finger on the sensor, in contrast to when the sensor is on the Back or bottom of the screen. I'd really enjoy a subscreen sensor in the mkV

    • @derAtze
      @derAtze 2 роки тому +31

      @@AppleReviews there is a thing you leave out of the equasion, its called computational photography. Its the "behind the scenes" work that an iPhone does to every picture you take via the image processor, it raises contrast, layers multiple differently exposed images to create HDR and uses AI to raise brightness on the subject and smoothes skin, as welll as adjusting the vibrancy and saturation of colors, without you asking, without a possibility to not use this. In the Sony Cameras you get a natural colored, flatter and less contrasted image, but for me that's exactly its special and advantageous position. My phone gives ME the control of how i want my photo to look and doesn't slap on a style made by some enigneer that "knows what people want their photos to look like". I can shoot raws easily, can adjust iso and shutterspeed in the normal, standard camera app, and use it as a creative tool, not just for snapchat and some landscape photos.

    I've had the Xperia 1 IV basically since it released. I'm a software developer and tech enthusiast and use it as more as a poweruser tool than for content consumption or entertainment, it should also be noted than I've never owned or used a Sony phone before this one so here is my honest opinion about it from the point of view of actually living with it daily:
    What I don't like:
    - The rear LED is weak when using it as a flashlight. Just using max brightness on the screen let's me see more at night.
    - Photos taken using the Basic mode are usually average or worse, although it's more than adequate for 90% of use cases
    - Even though it can take videos at 4k 120fps, the built in camera app doesn't have slow motion or timelapse options. This sucks.
    - You cannot use the phone as a wireless hotspot while connected to WiFi (for chaining or extending range) like some Xiaomi phones can. It's one or the other.
    - Lack of any real fast charging can be a nuisance. Although having the wireless charging option is nice for keeping it topped up.
    - Basic mode telephoto photos seem a bit washed out and fuzzy, but on closer inspection is still sharp. Just a weird effect.
    - The "Ice White" colour is actually pale blue. Not really a con but I wish it was the colour I expected.
    - I would really have liked a programmable button or to be able to re-map the shutter button when not using the camera app.
    Now here's what I like:
    - rgb notification LED, you don't realize how nice it is until you have it. Small quality of life improvement.
    - Headphone jack, use it often and for high quality audio (the audio DAC is also really good and has an accurate response curve)
    - The screen is amazing in terms of colour accuracy and especially resolution.
    - Since the shape is so tall and narrow, the front facing speakers are further apart and give a noticeably clearer stereo effect when used horizontally
    - Despite how bad auto mode is, photos taken with the manual mode can be absolutely insane. Approaching the quality of a dedicated mirrorless or DSLR and better than something you could get on a pixel/Samsung or iPhone for particular shots *if you put in the effort*
    - Dual waterproof rating, IP ratings aren't cumulative so having the extra peace of mind is great. I've taken underwater videos several times now.
    - Having a clean, no B.S, no bloatware Android version is very underrated. The added features are meh although I use the split screen quite often. Nothing beats the android experience on a pixel, but I would give this solid second place.
    - The eye tracking autofocus is bonkers, both for video and burst mode photos. It can track anything with an eye even if it moves like a cat on crack.
    - Clean design. Having no stupid looking notch or hole punch is a really big plus for me. The bezels are anyways very small and non-intrusive, it's something you forget until you use another phone and wonder why your brain is itching.
    - Expandable storage is also a winner, I use it as an external SSD for my laptop and its nice to know that space will never be a limitation
    - NFC and wireless charging are basically the only reasons I got the Xperia 1 IV instead of the Xperia 5. Not having to bring my wallet around with me is really convenient and keeping your phone almost fully charged and ready through the day is really neat.
    I don't really play games or create content so I can't comment on that, but for daily use and even with processor intensive apps running split screen at 120hz it stays responsive and snappy and I've only ever had a heating issue once when filming video. Interestingly it didn't throttle or drop frames at all which is standard practice on most devices.
    If I can summarize my opinion about the phone it would be that its extremely thoughtfully designed and very focused on "quality of life" aspects. More so than most other devices I've experienced. I really appreciate that Sony still sticks to a Kaizen philosophy and continue to make phones which are better and better. So much so that they are appreciated more and more by less and less people.

    I guess why SONY can do this is because they're one of the biggest CMOS producers rn... they make good cameras and even my Nikon mirrorless camera has a SONY sensory if I remember correctly; which means they can hopefully do something with the sensor to make it more efficient. Basically, if you want a wide focal length range, the sensor has to be small. (for example, an 80mm lens for a smaller aps-c crop-frame camera can be made smaller than the one for a full-frame camera)... aka if the same pixel specs, fitting more pixels into a smaller sensor space; which usually leads to poorer image quality because of...umm physics.

You get the feeling that they try to evaluate every feature allowed on their phones (like the iPhone) although I do get the iPhone criticism and sometimes agree with it but you have to give it to them when it comes to decision-making, having a view of your own as a brand.
      Sony gets my respect in that regard, e.g the decision to go with side fingerprint sensor rather than in-display fps even tho it's a trend associated with other premium phones. If it doesn't make sense to them, they avoid it.

    Three cameras is the perfect combo. Ultrawide, standard, then something like a 2x to 8x. One thing to consider here, is that you can't beat single length lenses for ease of manufacturing and higher quality optics. Zooms are always a compromise, especially when you try to cram in big multiplication. So having those 2 primes will give you the best quality for shots for those pictures that don't need a lot of reach.

    Watching this on my Xperia 1 II and it was the first time I spent 1200€ on a smartphone ( highest I had paid was 450€) but I don't regret it and don't think I'd change for the next 3 years. Its still smooth af and camera still impresses me.
    Quality over quantity seems to be Sony's moto and they are classy, elegant but efficient with their designs. Not perfect (brightness in the mark 2 is bad, and side fingerprint sensor aren't great) but they improve with every edition.
    No notch, stereo speakers, headphone jack, great camera, screen, audio and video quality enhanced with their codec packs.

      Well even the most "bare" images you get out of your mobile will have some processing because the extremely small sensors, very small lenses and apertures means there is simply not enough light to produce a good image unless you are shooting in perfect intensive sunlight. So there is interpolation and processing done even when all AI features are turned off or not even available if the mobile is cheap enough.
      What's really amazing is how good they have gotten at fooling us. But then even our own eyes fool us, or rather our brains does. Do you think your eyes see all you see? No I'm not paraphrasing the Matrix. Your brain is constantly running image processing on what your eyes are feeding you. I wouldn't be surprised if the same "software" is responsible for recreating the imagery in you memories. But hey I know computers and cameras, not the intricacies of the brain. But the thing is what you "see" is actually a composite of what your eye is actually seeing right now and what your brain cook up using experience and what your eyes recently sent over. It's kind of a temporal upscaling if you like.
      Well the mobile cameras does something similar before even handing the result to the image processing software. Now if you look at a larger camera then the sensor will be many times larger than the one in the mobile. The lenses are also huge collecting a lot of light compared. And still low light photography is not easy requiring either long exposure or a lot of image processing to look decent. And yes that includes the latest tech cameras.

    • @TechnoBabble
      @TechnoBabble 2 роки тому +1

      The overwhelming majority of smartphones are still doing a large amount of processing to the images even when you're shooting "RAW". If they didn't you would be getting an extremely noisy image with poor dynamic range, the sensors simply don't gather enough light.

I have an Xperia 5-iii and it's a clean phone with more or less stock android and I appreciate all the bells and whistles it does, including manual photography. I do think people avoid this brand because they want a basic point and shoot that has the AI do the work for them which, Sony has gotten a bit better with that. If Sony were to implement that in future phones though, they could potentially selling a lot more of their product, while still maintaining all of the other excellent features.
