I've watched tons of reviews of the Sony Xperia 1 VI here on UA-cam, but yours is definitely the best! Lots of expert knowledge and all relevant points were addressed and shown! Thank you!
Everyone is complaining about the removal of 4K and not even taking into consideration that this phone basically lasts twice as long as the S24 Ultra, while still being quite close to its overall screen brightness.
Don't slap on a 1080p screen and call this a flagship phone, than charge flagship prices onto it. Whoever is the lead designer or marketing team needs to be bitch slapped for thinking its a good idea to downgrade the screen.
While it's true that removing the 4k screen feels like a downgrade if you're coming from the V like me, I wasn't happy the V had a 4k screen in the first place. As expected the battery drain is quite high and to be honest in 90% of the cases i can't even see a difference between 4k and 1080p on this screen. So going down to 2k is a no-brainer
The reason is not that they got rid of 4k screen, but because some of them loved 21:9 aspect ratio, and most of them are shocked by the move not to a standard flagship 2k-3k resolution, but to a budget phone level 1080p screen, that is too low for a 1500 euros flagship phone.... such pathetic resolution should be on 10 VI or 5 VI, never on 1 VI....
@glebpalchin6809 the 4K screens weren't even running 4K 90% of the time. If u check AIDA 64, it'll still show 1080p resolution rather than 4K on previous Xperia 1s
Nice! Lots of people complain about the lower resolution; To me the 1080p screen is a pro as it helps battery life and less throttling. It'll get slightly better even with updates; as the launch software is quite agressive with throttling and such.
@@forresthopkinsa1080 ? This phone is worth 400$ at best. Of the display was 4000nits full displays it would be worth the tradeoff but there are many phones at are both brighter and higher resolution while being cheaper
How they gonna upgrade a 1080 screen to better resolution with software? besides, 1400ish€ for a 1080p screen and mediocre performance plus throttling when theres, for example, a nubia z60 ultra with much better specs for less than 1000 bucks
On my 3rd Xperia, a 1 IV. I will miss the 21:9 form factor, it's such a lovely phone to hold while still having the same height as larger phones for scrolling uses. I will also miss the Alpha-style UI for the pro mode, it's something I've really grown to love on my 1II and 1IV. But if these relatively minor sacrifices must be made for Sony to continue to justify the Xperia line then I will take them, even with those losses, there's still enough to keep it unique and oh so Sony.
I agee and im still on my 5ii. They should have giving that nice 48mp double stacked lens to the 10 vi too and a normal selfie. And then with the 5 vi they should have giving a normal 80mm zoom lens again. Then it would make sense to me. The 10 vi misses the boat too in my opinion. Cant use 8mp cameras anymore these days. For the 1vi it might make sense that they use a different aspects ratio cause of the zoom machenism that maybe needs more space in the phone itself. But lets see. Im really curious of the 5 vi. I do want to save money to buy a 5 series again. Nonetheless that are still improving and now even give the 3 year os updates gives me a sense of "okay we are here to stay for a longer while" feeling. So that might be good.

Did you actually test the 3.5mm Audiojack on a headphone? Simply repeating whatever Sony is claiming in their promo materials does not sound like a review to me.
Yeah, i was hoping the same. I am disappointed that it was not an extensive test on GSM's part, rather just a repeat of what was told by Sony themselves on their marketing material.
I LOVEEEE this phone! The camera is one of the best, if not the best one, the 3.5mm jack is still there, and I'm so glad they changed the aspect ratio... F*cking finally!! The 21:9 4k is why I love the Xperia 1 line of phones. So Sony ditched that. I'm saddened by this. To me that is what made this phone unique and a joy to have. I hope Sony returns to the 21:9 4k for next years Xperia phone. This i think can be a one off this for the general public to get them into Sony Xperia phones. Sony clearly listened to Marques Brownlee's advice to make a flagship phone geared towards the general masses, but us longtime fans of the Xperia 1 line of phones want an upgraded over engineered Xperia 1 that us longtime enthusiasts have come to love and will purchase with 21:9 4k, notification light, and better one handed software mode usage.
Why do you say that charging could be faster using a third party charger? The device only takes up to 30W, how could a faster charger make a difference?
i was disappointed that SONY ditched the 4k display, i think most of the fans of the phone like me just wanted a screen resolution and refresh rate adjuster built in the settings, not ditch the 4k, i mean the things that i like about the phone is its unique tall design and its 4k120hz display, making it standout among its competition, for me xperia 1 mark vi just became the same as all the existing smartphones this year, i just hope that SONY would bring back the 4k display and add a built-in resolution and refresh rate adjuster instead..

Sony took one step forward with great battery life and 10 steps backwards with everything else. Guess I'll wait another 3 years for a decent Xperia phone
I have seen a lot of camera samples on GSM site and I definitely felt that this phone's samples were most pleasing to look at than any other phone this year or last year... Sure people will argue about other things like noise, detail etc etc but just plain looking at the photos they looked straight up amazing... Part of that might be due to the weather also
Sony did everything right except the screen resolution and price. Otherwise I'm excited about what they have to offer in terms of cameras and battery life. Especially the new telephoto macro lens. 4k120fps recording across the board. This is a win.
Sony phones always score poorly now in camera benchmarks. But this phone is for you if you like natural looking less detail photos, headphones jack, expandable storage.
Camera king? Bro, I once had the 1v. The only good camera is the main one. I sold mine after 2 weeks of usage, then bought Xiaomi 14 Ultra. It’s miles better!!!
This is a fantastic review. Most of the photo tests are actually challenging the camera - natural landscape tests with foliage are something that mkbhd never does and something my iPhone absolutely sucks at.
Problem with 1440 is formating (APPs and webpages will be out of place = even worse than 21:9 ratio) The Bravia software more than makes up for lack of 4k (assuming its *master series* XR OLED software = comparable to A90K & A95L)

@@thedarkknight1971 I also don't understand their market strategy. It is a costly phone. So reaching out to more markets and providing better software upgrade duration will help them increase sales. But I use it and find it pretty good. Whatever updates they published, they were prompt. The 3 separate apps doesn't bother me. I love the video viewing experience. In fact I watch all my netflix, prime etc. in it and find them enjoyable.
What memories of the first Sony Xperia. And the Xperia Play!
I guess we'll have to thank Ericsson as well for their partnership with Sony. That was the best times, now Sony is dead on arrival in the smartphone department
Xperia X1? I still have it, was a capable phone, but the keyboard was shit.
I am commenting with 1 VI and I have to say wow just wow...coming from 1iii it's a big improvement almost all,the display is not bad at all it is even much better, the difference between 4K and FullHD is not visible at all..everyone is crying because they changed to FullHD no difference in sharpness can be seen.
as for the camera, a very big improvement, sharper, better processing, macro camera
the speakers are better, clear sound, more bass
I am surprised how good the phone is, it is worth upgrading

I didn't understand 4k it still has buddy it is written
The reason is not that they got rid of 4k screen, but because some of them loved 21:9 aspect ratio, and most of them are shocked by the move not to a standard flagship 2k-3k resolution, but to a budget phone level 1080p screen, that is too low for a 1500 euros flagship phone.... such pathetic resolution should be on 10 VI or 5 VI, never on 1 VI....
@glebpalchin6809 the 4K screens weren't even running 4K 90% of the time. If u check AIDA 64, it'll still show 1080p resolution rather than 4K on previous Xperia 1s

it's such a perfect phone to be, crisp and smooth display, the camera quality, the build quality, and the speakers and especially the DESIGN!
Nice! Lots of people complain about the lower resolution;
To me the 1080p screen is a pro as it helps battery life and less throttling.
It'll get slightly better even with updates; as the launch software is quite agressive with throttling and such.
There are other resolutions besides UHD and FHD though. 1080 is just so low for a $1300 flagship. They should've gone QHD.
@@forresthopkinsa1080 ? This phone is worth 400$ at best. Of the display was 4000nits full displays it would be worth the tradeoff but there are many phones at are both brighter and higher resolution while being cheaper
How they gonna upgrade a 1080 screen to better resolution with software? besides, 1400ish€ for a 1080p screen and mediocre performance plus throttling when theres, for example, a nubia z60 ultra with much better specs for less than 1000 bucks
every other 1440 phone has an option to go down to 1080. how the fuck is no 1440 a good thing?

My next phone. Covered all my needs in a smart professional looking body. Thanks Sony!!

Personally I would have preferred if they sticked to 21:9 but it was probably a sacrifice made for the brighter ltpo screen, same with 4k most likely
21:9 is good for you for what? for me, so annoying for watching youtube videos on a tall display, and changing between videos, have to constantly turn the display to see anything clearly.

This review came up pretty fast 👌
The downgrade from 4K display to full HD is too drastic. They could've at least gone for 2K which is the flagship standard nowadays.
True
Amen to that. I fully agree
Yup. Considering that price range. Arguably, they could have just optimized the phone. Their only problem was not optimizing their phones.
dude it helped in battery life it is literally the battery king now
1080 and 2K are the same thing. The actual screen resolution is 1080x2340, while 1080 video is 1920x1080.
The big reason why I went with the Sony 1 V was it's screen size.... It was it's main difference.... It's a shame that's gone.

Did you actually test the 3.5mm Audiojack on a headphone? Simply repeating whatever Sony is claiming in their promo materials does not sound like a review to me.
The 3.5mm is Basic dude
Not like in the LG phones or in the Moondrop Miad 01.
Yeah, i was hoping the same. I am disappointed that it was not an extensive test on GSM's part, rather just a repeat of what was told by Sony themselves on their marketing material.
I actually use this phone jack with my wired earphones with noise cancelling
I’m still happy with my 1 V and maybe even happier because it still has the signature 21:9 4k display.
Wow the camera wow the potrait bokeh wow the super macro amazingggggg!!!!!
The sensors size are a bit small… specially the telephoto one
i actually prefered the tall look, fits in the hand better than convention stuff and also gives a good aspect ratio.
I LOVEEEE this phone! The camera is one of the best, if not the best one, the 3.5mm jack is still there, and I'm so glad they changed the aspect ratio... F*cking finally!! I don't get how they put a FHD+ Display in a flagship, but since it's 19.5.9, LTPO and 800 NITS manually, there's not much to complain about.
Yeah FD isn't amazing but im guessing it's for that 2 day battery life?
@@LukasGroundsThat and the new battery tech, plus the underclocked chipset. Good for Sony though, these phones aren't meant for gaming anyway. Oh well, it lasts twice as long as the S24 Ultra.
@@LukasGrounds maybe, but the OnePlus 12 lasts two days with 2k 120Hz, so there's no excuse. I think it's just the compromise that Sony has chosen. All brands make some cuts, and here it's the FHD panel.
It's pretty much perfect, but why the FHD+ screen?
Sure, 4k was overkill, but should've gone to the middleground of QHD+ like the s23ultra, ~500pi is the peak sweetspot. Anything sib 450 looks too pixilated
4k is Definitely NOT overkill. 4k should be standard for all phones just like T.V. and monitors. already have. Now 8k would be overkill only because most content is not 8k native. Sony really screwed up on this one👎
İ like sony style and it really looks shiny and Traditional Japan style but usefull
At 11:10, Sony Xperia nailed that bokeh (portrait) mode, 2nd to none! The 'swirl' around the subject looks very very close to how portrait lens in a mirrorless or dslr camera would produce. Sony has the best portrait lens simulator in any phone!

They fcked up with 30W charging, my xiaomi mi 9 have it and its a phone from 2019! Also why no 512GB in Europe?
i was disappointed that SONY ditched the 4k display, i think most of the fans of the phone like me just wanted a screen resolution and refresh rate adjuster built in the settings, not ditch the 4k, i mean the things that i like about the phone is its unique tall design and its 4k120hz display, making it standout among its competition, for me xperia 1 mark vi just became the same as all the existing smartphones this year, i just hope that SONY would bring back the 4k display and add a built-in resolution and refresh rate adjuster instead..

- Having some EXCELLENT hardware, but providing DISMAL OS/Security update life...
- Said excellent hardware having FAR TOO COMPLICATED multiple camera app systems...
- SERIOUSLY HEFTY price tags...
And more issues besides...
Sony phones COULD rise to become some of the most popular phones 'Out in the field' to rival the likes of Apple and Samsungs' offerings... IF ONLY they corrected the above issues (and a couple of others), and they COULD do it as they have what? 3 phone models (not like Samsung with their extensive A and S range phones)... Let us buy the phones SOON after announcing them, DROP the price to UNDER the 'Equivalent' Samsung, give them AT LEAST 4 years OS and a further 1 year Security update system, then, yeah, I'm pretty sure, they'll sell A LOT MORE of these phones so MORE people can enjoy such things as the great screens and FRONT FIRING PROPER STEREO loud speakers that DO make a difference in viewing content (I remember the days of my Motorola Google Nexus 6! With its 6" Quad HD display and front firing stereo speaker set up... I miss those days.. What do we have now? Mid to tinny left earpiece speaker and full range but firing away from you bottom right speaker... 😒 As Michael Fisher (MrMobile) says - "When phones were fun".. 😏

Why OP12 doesn't appear in any chart?
Just go to their website. You can compare what you want with other phones.
lets just hope they fixed the overheating issue that has plagued this lineup.
1080p resolution with 396 ppi, 120hz pwm, the same cameras as last year, and 3 years of os updates and slow af charging speeds for £1299. DOA
Sony digging their own grave
está creado para humanos
no percibes mayor densidad en pantalla, las cámaras son el tope de su tecnología
el software si que puede mejorar
Same sensors*
I hope they exit the smartphone market.
What a shame Sony caved into the masses and dropped 21:9 😢 Im watching Dune on my 1V in 4K and its amazing. This feels more like a cost cutting exercise for Sony than an upgrade for us consumers
Most videos, tv shows, and movies are shot at 16:9
Some movies are 18:9 and very rarely 21:9. So keeping that long aspect ratio doesn't really make sense as the letterboxing is more significant when viewing most content
It upscales the content and almost double the battery life so irl its a win
I doubt the wing is gonna last. I predict Sony will drop their phone division. It's been bad for 7+ years & it's not even improving.
Finally a review which is not only focused on camera. And it's very good 👍
