Well said. Scary Movies 1-3 were dumb in a good way, the same way a movie like Airplane or Hot Rod are. They had some clever jokes, and found fun ways to poke fun at tropes in different movie genres. Though the subsequent movies just turned into references for the sake of references where there's no joke, just acknowledging pop culture in the laziest way possible.

I think they saw the series for what it's worth which was a generational thing that was coming to a end. The young adults hated Scary Movie 4 and the kids from that era weren't privy to all the jokes/humor which helped spell doom for the franchise. So that last movie was generally only funny to Middle School and High School age kids. You have to realize that they would cover a movie that came out 2-4 years prior to when a Scary Movies series got released. Hence why 8 Mile and the movie Signs could work for on 4th-5th grader's, we saw those movie's way before the parody would get released to the public.
I can see why they did the reshoots. How are the Matrix movies connected to horror in any way. You could say the same with Hulk as well. It seems like the producers really wanted to mock upcoming movies at the time but knew they had to limit themselves with only horror movies, so they got the idea of making movies just by parodying new movies coming out that same year. Probably how shitters like Epic Movie, Date Movie, or Disaster Movie got made.
