It was meant as a joke but they sold like 5000 units or something and they actually had to contract a larger manufacturer to get them made :D It's so stupid, so wasteful, but it's also just kinda funny.
Dbrand knows how the internet works. The people who would only by first party, are now going to be exposed to dbrands version. No one who was going to buy the dark plates is going to buy the Sony one
Honestly, though. If dBrand had sent Linus their side-plates after Sony's were put, how different would this video really be? They know they will get compared so make sure their brand will be front and centre for a competitor's review. Plus they got the "even if you buy those guy's side plates you can add our light strips" angle added in.
It's kinda their whole marketing level, if you didn't visit their website so far, I highly recommend doing it, it's just full with memes and all kinds of other very "unconventional" stuff

The colour differences you are talking about are called metamerism. Two different colours can actually look identical under one lighting condition and completely different under another lighting condition. You probably didn't see huge differences because of your studio lighting (full spectrum and quite close to incandescent lighting or sun light), but cheaper LED lights might completely shift the tone of the plates compared to the controller.

I’ve got the black dark plates 1.0 and the same retro gray 2.0 plates. Personally the 2.0 plates are where it’s at. It considerably improves the look of the console. I hated the “fins” on the standard plates.

Don’t bother buying the plates. You can buy a can of spray paint for a few bucks and get the exact same effect. EDIT: Forgot that Dbrand plates are a different shape than the Sony ones, so I guess for some people that could be the more important factor. Still not worth the money though IMO

I've had the Dbrand dark skin for over a month now and love it. the black on black looks super clean, the light strips were simple and easy to install. The extra airflow is also just great.

Dammit, this marketing worked on me. When I do get a PS5 I am definitely going through dbrand first before Sony. The vents, the more contained design, plus the pattern work on the colour choice, sounds the better option.
I personally think the vents are ugly and would go with ps5s plates but to each their own cooking is better with dbrand that’s where they win but looks wise I think somy takes the cake the vents personally to me look tacky

I ordered by Dark Plates 2.0 (I went with black) back in November and they literally just came in today. I played a bit of Horizon: Forbidden West and I noticed the console didn't even get warm. That extra ventilation is honestly worth the price on it's own. The fact that it just looks better without those stupid collar looking bits sticking out is a nice bonus. I also bought the blue light strips, and I do like them. So, Linus was right about that one. I also ordered the limited edition leather skin for down the center, but sadly, it's coming in a separate shipment, so I don't get to have the finished look just yet.
out of curiosity - were you having issues with your console becoming hot/warm? i was able to get one a few weeks ago now and i have it upright on the ground next to the tv console. the console is open, so i don't think it would be an issue for it, but i wanted to make sure it had plenty of room to dissipate any heat. that said, it seems to barely get hot or make a sound. would be interested in hearing your thoughts.
I'm playing HFW too with official black Sony plates, mine doesn't get warm either. I have checked it with other games too, maybe as mine is version two with improved heatsink?

I love the discrete color and look of the dbrand cover, looks more industrial yet subtle, I would say it can fit in any room. But the cosmic red looks good too, I used to have a red PSP back then. But its too flashy for me now, mainly cause I'm older.
I know its not related to this video but the spyderco bug is one of my favorite keychain knives, stays sharp and is a beautiful shape. Good to see a professional also using it
Its designed to dampen the fan noise and make sure you can't block off the air intakes if you put the console too close to something else. It also makes a more defined path for the air so its less likely to draw hot exhaust air back in. So sure, if you position your console perfectly with good airflow it will be better without, but Sony has to account for the average user who has no clue. I'm also not sure if it might impact dust intake. Console manufacturers don't like filters as they know most people wouldn't ever think to clean them.

@@alexatkin Yeah, the only reason I didn't get a D Brand was because of the extra air vent. Sony tech guys obviously designed the cooling around the plates, so if extra vents are added it could interrupt the airflow around the chips/board.

If I ever had the chance to start my own country, third party accessories would be legally protected and design patents like the one Sony got on the PS5 faceplates wouldn't be possible to get. Also, non-profit fangames and romhacks that don't defame their respective franchises would also be legally protected.
I'd totally buy dbrand's dark plates if they would've went with perforations over the circa 1998 PC rear fan cutout design for the intakes. Some nice sweeping design with holes that get bigger over the top of the fans where they're needed and kind of shrink and fade as they get further away. Plus clear and smoked dark plates, show off those light strips.

@@mahfudzk You can't buy just the light decals, I just checked. You need to buy it along with the decal that covers the black part of the PS5 and it ends up being like $25 before tax and shipping.
DBrand understands marketing to the ~27 and below population. They are funny, a little rebelious and they know if we really think about buying a product we are gonna check it out online first.
Dbrand did get me for the middle vinyl piece since I don’t like the default shiny plastic. I don’t mind the default white plates though. The black middle vinyl is very nice with it.

I've had the Dbrand dark skin for over a month now and love it. the black on black looks super clean, the light strips were simple and easy to install. The extra airflow is also just great.

Dammit, this marketing worked on me. When I do get a PS5 I am definitely going through dbrand first before Sony. The vents, the more contained design, plus the pattern work on the colour choice, sounds the better option.
When you do, make sure to add an obnoxious request, you'll be surprised.
I personally think the vents are ugly and would go with ps5s plates but to each their own cooking is better with dbrand that’s where they win but looks wise I think somy takes the cake the vents personally to me look tacky

I ordered by Dark Plates 2.0 (I went with black) back in November and they literally just came in today. I played a bit of Horizon: Forbidden West and I noticed the console didn't even get warm. That extra ventilation is honestly worth the price on it's own. The fact that it just looks better without those stupid collar looking bits sticking out is a nice bonus. I also bought the blue light strips, and I do like them. So, Linus was right about that one.
I also ordered the limited edition leather skin for down the center, but sadly, it's coming in a separate shipment, so I don't get to have the finished look just yet.
out of curiosity - were you having issues with your console becoming hot/warm? i was able to get one a few weeks ago now and i have it upright on the ground next to the tv console. the console is open, so i don't think it would be an issue for it, but i wanted to make sure it had plenty of room to dissipate any heat. that said, it seems to barely get hot or make a sound. would be interested in hearing your thoughts.
I'm playing HFW too with official black Sony plates, mine doesn't get warm either. I have checked it with other games too, maybe as mine is version two with improved heatsink?

@@erock81487 The video I saw which compared V1 and V2 heatsinks said there was an improvement. TBH I never had any heating problems with my PS4 (day 1) or my PS4 Pro.

I love the discrete color and look of the dbrand cover, looks more industrial yet subtle, I would say it can fit in any room. But the cosmic red looks good too, I used to have a red PSP back then. But its too flashy for me now, mainly cause I'm older.

Its designed to dampen the fan noise and make sure you can't block off the air intakes if you put the console too close to something else.
It also makes a more defined path for the air so its less likely to draw hot exhaust air back in.
So sure, if you position your console perfectly with good airflow it will be better without, but Sony has to account for the average user who has no clue.
I'm also not sure if it might impact dust intake. Console manufacturers don't like filters as they know most people wouldn't ever think to clean them.

@@alexatkin Yeah, the only reason I didn't get a D Brand was because of the extra air vent. Sony tech guys obviously designed the cooling around the plates, so if extra vents are added it could interrupt the airflow around the chips/board.

If I ever had the chance to start my own country, third party accessories would be legally protected and design patents like the one Sony got on the PS5 faceplates wouldn't be possible to get.
Also, non-profit fangames and romhacks that don't defame their respective franchises would also be legally protected.
Then in your theoretical country, Sony would make unremovable plates so that there would never be a chance third party companies.

I'd totally buy dbrand's dark plates if they would've went with perforations over the circa 1998 PC rear fan cutout design for the intakes. Some nice sweeping design with holes that get bigger over the top of the fans where they're needed and kind of shrink and fade as they get further away. Plus clear and smoked dark plates, show off those light strips.
$55 bucks for a shell? Do you recycle the old? Nah, I'll just have a custom color spray paint on the shells that easily come off.

I got the official black Sony plates. They INSTANTLY transformed my PS5 from a Fisher-Price toy to a sexy piece of tech - especially with the orange standby light on! Always hated the white.
