The reason it's slow is because your running it at idle, the higher the RPM of the engine the stronger/faster the hydraulics will be. This is true of almost all hydraulic pumps. Hope this helps

Great video! I bought one last year, and I love it! I want(ed) a sub-compact tractor with a backhoe also, but, after finding out the tractor, without the backhoe, no matter the brand, starts at about $13K, then the backhoe attachments start at about $7K, I began more seriously considering the Harbor Freight option. I bought a "weld-on" thumb for mine, which I bolted on, and it adds a whole new world to the machine. For example, I had a huge pile of large oak rounds (20"-40" diameter) given to me, and I used the machine to manipulate them toward the splitter. It was fabulous!
I would caution folks, I was moving some pretty large rocks (300-500 lb), and I peeled the bucket apart like a banana, at the pivot point. The steel just plain ripped, right along the welds on both sides. Basically, It was too powerful for itself.
FYI, There's a cool FB group dedicated to this machine, where a person can get ideas, share experiences, and generally discuss all things Harbor Freight Towable Trencher. Cheers!

I know the sub compact tractor market is crazy. If i get one it’ll be at least 10 years old. This is great for what it is!

We have owned our HF digger for about 2 years and love it. Is it perfect, nope, does it get a lot of work done yep. I have used it to dig up the roots of a 40" diameter tree so that I could push it over with my tractor later. We used it to help level out an area we built a garage on later and much much more. 👍

This is really awesome for the 'backyard excavator'! Perfect for maybe pools, trenches, digging small tree trunks, etc. I must have one! The thumb would be cool for moving tree trunks and logs also...I installed a ball hitch on my lawn tractor to move my utility trailer around and I'm sure it would be perfect for moving that around the property. Thanks!!!

Pros: There's been many times over the years that I could have used that. I've dug plenty of ditches on this property with a shovel. We just hired a guy with an excavator to clean out ditches and culverts on our driveway (long driveway) a week or two ago. Cons: I think you could get hurt pretty quick, if you're not extremely careful and willing to go slow.

I have had my trencher for about a year. It is not fast, but it can dig faster I can with a shovel.. I have the same problem with the front pin holes getting oblong. Two other problems I had with mine that caused delays in using it the first time. One was someone stole the tires off the pallet while in transit and I had to have another set sent. Also the hydraulic valves were leaking on mine. That is a well known problem and a replacement was sent no questions asked. Same for the replacement tires.

Well done review! I've had mine for over 7 years now and it's still going strong. Don't worry about welding around those holes, just replace the curved pins with straight hitch pins and the holes will be fine. I have many videos on my channel that may help with some of the questions you brought up. I will subscribe and keep watching so you keep digging.😁

Great review! Harbor Freight has a lot of good things for the price. Now may not want to use to make a living (working eight hours a day for 5 days a week but great for project every 3 or 4 weeks). I know its slow but you have to crawl before you walk and walk before you run and thank God your legs still work! By the way coming from an old man in Fayetteville AR, if you got that land for the price you paid where you live then you are way ahead of the game. Close to major highway with almost all utilities. Not bad not bad at all!

Excellent video description of your HF backhoe. Obviously you realize some of the shortcomings/dangers, hope others who purchase do too. Definitely don't want to operate/move in a yank. Think you are spot on with acquiring a compact tractor with a back hoe attachment for your homestead. Wishing you all success so you can purchase that tractor. Look into outfitting with a front dozer blade, too. I have JD 750 with a 365 hydraulic (up/down/angle) blade, can't tell you how much work I've accomplished with it and I'm looking for a backhoe attachment now. PS: can't help admiring the large tree (assume it is an Oak) above your home in the background.

HFT has magnetic lollipop trailer lights you can stick to the boom to tow. Where I live if what you are towing doesn't carry cargo "it is not a trailer". Examples are concrete mixers and BBQ smokers and are exempt from permanent lights.

They sell magnetic trailer lights... definitely not highway rated, you can change the coupler for a 2inch, you should order extra pivot pins (all locations as they can break pretty easily)... There are many upgrades you can add to it including a mechanical thumb, there isn't a place to stow the outriggers on the machine. There are upgrades to increase hydraulic volume to allow 2valve operations at the same time, also a good upgrade is to add a predator 420 or larger engine with electric start and add some lights to the machine. The outriggers need to be teeth down... If you need to work while on pavement use some hefty wood blocks under the outriggers running the outriggers upside down will cause them to break

I'd be building a dug out tiny house in a minute. Followed by a root cellar and who knows what else. The beauty of.
Something like that where a mini excavator would financially be a pipe dream. This will get the job done and it's attainable. Good investment!

I had one several years ago. I ended up burning up the motor, the hydraulic pump seized, ripped the original bucket in two, ripped the pins through the frame and elongated the holes where the rams mount on the boom. I bought a used Bobcat E50 from United rentals to replace it. I ended up building a custom trailer for the unit to permanently mount to with wheels and a ring hitch so I can attach it to my tractor. I custom mounted a cheap push mower to the end where the bucket mounted. I use the rear remotes on the tractor to control the arm so I can mow the grass around my pond.

I've had my towable trencher/backhoe for 3 years now.
It still runs fine and digs as well as it ever could, but I have overstressed it several times and had to do repairs.
The hydraulics are strong enough to rip the bucket in half. I recommend adjusting the relief valve a little for lower pressure.
It could use more ballast at the back. Some of the pins are easy to forget when greasing.
There's a couple of videos about an upgrade flow rate pump. Not higher pressure, but faster operation. And with higher flow you can run multiple functions at once without the boom dropping.

I am just sharing. I didn't buy the fold up trailer from Harbor Freight. I bought mine off of Amazon. Besides. I changed the bolts to the yellow high grade. Same with the tow chains. Then. Bought new 13-inch tires. Rated for 80 mph. I changed the hitch. To a 2 inch high-grade hitch. I only tow a trailer around 62 mph. Works perfectly. Same hubs. Same leaf spring. I added more LED lights. Front and back of the finders. I would take that across town if I could get a license plate for it. I would do a light kit. One day I will buy one. Thanks for sharing.

I welded flat washers to the pins for the oblonging. Other thoughts: swapped the two left paddles - for left/right and boom extension - just made more sense, push to go right, pull to go left, and the boom out/in, world of difference. Final thought - have a Kubota BX, thought about hooking to that while digging - but folks consistently break the hitch off the frame when doing that - certainly not built for it. Project coming along nicely!

Magnetic tow lights, removable chains with ratcheting chain binders from top of elbow to tongue to prevent sway during transport. Your PE may be able to sign off for highway use. Letting a little air of tires makes the ride softer for transport.
Change your both your oils early to get that metal from breakin out. Next oil change early and change on half duration of manufact. recomendations. Oil, filters, oil, air and gas are cheap compared to engine or hydraulic pump replacement. You can often adjust the valves at handles to increase flow/speed, maybe only on the side to side and down boom controls. I wouldn't mess with bucket/digging rotation. Then only use one lever/motion if pump can't keep up. You either get speed or power or some compromise with hydraulics. Choked down is a safery govenor. Factory set for safety for stooges. Make some "boots" for your our riggers out of old tires, wire/bands/glue or highway "dead alligators" thrown tractor trailer tire recaps.
Learn to weld. Local Community College is a goldmine for curious young men. Socialize with men and enjoy female-free spaces with your new dude-friends. Burp, fart and let out some raunch, laugh, rib each other, its male mental health maintenance. And while working on rusted parts, or equipment always have your penis-straightening oil.

Chinese mini excavators are flooding the market now. I just bought one in Texas at an equipment auction for $3,500 about two months ago. A no brainer at that price and I bought all kinds of other attachments like hydraulic thumb, hydraulic auger with 3 size auger bits, different size buckets, all for a few hundred extra. I’m all in for about $4,300 after auction fees and sales tax.

I’d like to have one of those, just couldn’t find one for a decent price around here. I also really want one of those ride behind skid steers that are becoming popular from China also

@@TractorWrangler01 since the axle is 2 pieces that slide in there’s some play in the tube they slide into so then once the weight is on it it they settle into a mild V shape inside the tubes

Look at the arm bucket conection, arm and boom conection. They're designed from an excavator(they look like they belong to a larger rig. That's because they made the arm and boom out of smaller steel. They're probably buying that from some cheap China equipment co., using smaller and substandard steel for the strength to load equivalent. It would probably be better for a lifting a person for tree pruning or roof or gutter work, window instillation on homes. Those outriggers should be stationary, slide and pin out. Be careful.
