This is the most beautiful song i've heard in awhile. I think Rowland was a genius, and this world never truly loves a genius person enough. His worth seems to becoming out more after he's passed away, sadly but expected that of the world. I loved him because Lydia Lunch recognized his great worth and I was a fan of hers when I was young. Hope more and more people find this song and then listen to more to from him.
I hear you brother. Listening to this with tears in my eyes and a cigarette in my hand, his music makes my heart hurt but not so that I want to fix - so that I want to create. One of the loveliest creatures ever spawned by this sad world.
Fear and self loathing Forged a chain of silver ore By the time I stop singing You won't love me anymore I ran to the river Crying, "river cure me" But the river just laughed Washing sand over me Girl child your daddy's Silver chain's nine miles long From every link of that chain Hangs a heart he has wronged Little girl take the length Of your father's bright chain And bind me to you I don't care what you do I ran to the fire "Fire purify me" The fire licked my skin But it did not set me free I turned to the bottle "Alcohol cure me Let me sleep without dreaming" Alcohol lied to me Girl child your daddy's Silver chain's nine miles long From every link of that chain Hangs a heart he has wronged Little girl take the length Of your father's bright chain And bind me to you I don't care what you do I spoke to the forest I spoke to the trees I spoke to the river But it did not speak to me I carved your name In the cypress tree bark I tattooed your name In a ring round my heart I wore out my welcome I wore out myself I wore out my reason I wore out my health I forgot my name On the day that you came... Girl child your daddy's Silver chain's nine miles long From every link of that chain Hangs a heart he has wronged Little girl take the length Of your father's bright chain And bind me to you I don't care what you do
if ever i coud be star struck, it's when i see his face hear his guitar and get lost in his voice, I wish not to sound so emotional but he makes me 15 again.Where Nick made me wanna fix to "Much of his words" this boy makes me wanna heal and share. He was just beautifal music-voice-words-face- it's a tradgedy having more oppurtunity to see him live, but missing it stuck in my addiction. now clean "he's gone.", but his song's arn't. at least we have his beauty in song, and pics
Great video. He was a real man,a gentleman I aquainted over the years,a true artist of the Melbourne tradition if you will. I miss our periodic conversations over the years and can't get over his loss. Beautiful video, brings tears but thanks.I so miss that he is gone
+Blinky Cat The Melbourne tradition? The Melbourne entertainment industry was run by racist bigots up until the late nineties, when suddenly WASPS and Australia realised it is not the only nation on earth. And it was only then that people with non-pronounceable surnames were gaining recognition for their talents, other than not fitting in to the 'white bleach smelling' Anglo Saxons. What is the Melbourne tradition, if you do not have a pronounceable surname, and have neither attended Melbourne Uni, nor live in the S.E suburbs then one is not a part of the Melbourne tradition. In very narrow terms, most Melbourne WASP entertainers are 'middle class losers and wankers' that dump their drug fuelled and social problems on people that don't fit in to the Melbourne wankers membership club. I live in Melbourne, I was dumped here from Europe, and most of the time I hate most of the people in this city of self-righteous arseholes. And Australians generally are of the same latter category, arseholes. Melbourne tradition......(Johnny does a big vomit)
Johnny Trash I'm content being a nobody too and RSH was a really nice guy with an extraordinary gift otherwise he was down to earth,no bs kind of man ,I'm licking nobody's boots thankyou. I'm sorry you are so unhappy.I hope you find some happiness and peace;don't give up. I left Melbourne for various reasons, doesn't mean I don't love going back regularly,it's a shame you have the opposite view
Been a fan of Nick Cave for about 10 years - just starting to explore the early stuff and music of Rowland. So sad he died. Woud have loved to see him live Thanks for the vid
Me too. Espy, I think it was, but it was so long ago, and I only have flashes of memory of the night. The beer soaked carpet! Egad! Hi from 2023. 😮 RIP Roland. 😢
You're right, Cave has only a couple of good songs since The Birthday Party. Rowland, conversely, put-out great song after great song since then. He was the real genius.
@@honrodgers9472 Sorry, I just find Cave to be overrated and boring, since The Birthday Party. He gets way too much credit, just like lead-singers always do.
i think this is written from the perspective of the heart broken boy boy joan baez rejects in "silver dagger"(thats an olt folk song she didn't write that). In the song she explains that her father was a heart breaker (i.e. she has daddy issues) so she cannot be with him. and he's saying he doesn't care, drown me in all your issues, but she leaves anyways. so heart breaking, perfect desperate sorrow. the violin gets me every time. xo r.i.p.
Yeah I started to think the same thing after hearing Dolly Parton's rendition of that song. I'm glad I'm not the only person to catch it. Pretty cool...

Looks vampirish.Ethereal in appearance. Nice song. More listen able than Nick and the Bad Seeds. Loved the Birthday Party but not Nick's later band, bad seeds. Had a Lp from Roland and Lunch. Some Velvet Morning when I am Straight . Cover.
Well Nick Cave would've omitted his unique chance to grow a circuit preacher and wind people up with his cheap tricks. Don't get me wrong, I'm a devoted NC's fan but being a fan one needs to be alerted like twice. Ironically enough, I never claimed to be Rowland's fan, so unlike Cave he has my unconditional respect, a very special place in my heart.
What powerfully melancholic and artfully penned lyrics. No doubt this is Rowland S. Howard's 'swan song'.
I'm criying and I'm strangely happy at the same time. His songs always give me some comfort
We ❤️ Rowland forever. We ❤️ you too Bianca and hope you are doing well

I never met Him but I feel like He IS a true friend of mine...see you in Heaven,Rowland!!!

I come here time to time because I can't help myself not to.
You are so missed Howard.
Heartbreaking. We miss you so much, Rowland.
Rowland is a rare Genius! He's very special and he could give us even more great music!Love him!And happy to know him!
Fear and self loathing
Forged a chain of silver ore
By the time I stop singing
You won't love me anymore
I ran to the river
Crying, "river cure me"
But the river just laughed
Washing sand over me
Girl child your daddy's
Silver chain's nine miles long
From every link of that chain
Hangs a heart he has wronged
Little girl take the length
Of your father's bright chain
And bind me to you
I don't care what you do
I ran to the fire
"Fire purify me"
The fire licked my skin
But it did not set me free
I turned to the bottle
"Alcohol cure me
Let me sleep without dreaming"
Alcohol lied to me
Girl child your daddy's
Silver chain's nine miles long
From every link of that chain
Hangs a heart he has wronged
Little girl take the length
Of your father's bright chain
And bind me to you
I don't care what you do
I spoke to the forest
I spoke to the trees
I spoke to the river
But it did not speak to me
I carved your name
In the cypress tree bark
I tattooed your name
In a ring round my heart
I wore out my welcome
I wore out myself
I wore out my reason
I wore out my health
I forgot my name
On the day that you came...
Girl child your daddy's
Silver chain's nine miles long
From every link of that chain
Hangs a heart he has wronged
Little girl take the length
Of your father's bright chain
And bind me to you
I don't care what you do
Thank-you, Fernando.
Jesus, this is so good
This could be the best song ever.

You might be surprised to know, that was fascinating to read.@@TimeTraveller010
It's weird to think I used to listen to this while inpatient when I was a teen. Those were dark years. Nostalgic tho.
Definitely my favourite song at the moment...Such a *real* and fantastic artist. R.I.P. Rowland! xoxo

Beautiful. Just beautiful.
looks like a smacked out franz kafka. i was lucky enough to see the birthday party once.. unforgettable.
Kafka with a hint of Nosferatu. Jeez, could he play guitar. You ARE lucky.

Hi from 2023. 😮
RIP Roland. 😢
Rowland Legend.. The True Brains behind the Birthday Party, the Music Lives on always!!!

Yesss. TRUTH! Rowland not Nick.
Mick Harvey too, to be fair.
@@FGP_Pro This is an awful take Cave has put out excellent albums since leaving the Birthday Party Rowland is still great tho they both are.

Dark & Deepest Song Ever! I Miss The Genius! :'(
What a fine human being . Man could he sing & make the guitar sing ... 8~))
melancholic uplift music!
Happy birthday to this incredible man. RIP, sir.
RIP to Brian Henry Hooper, as well. Inimitable blokes.
Oh wow, I had no idea. Just looked up the Baez tune. Thanks for posting this, else I never would've known. :)

Why did the most handsome guy in the world die when I was 9 years old?
Assertion self determined of what we all see: exploitation as a mainstay, now that exploits me.

RSH looks like the vampire in FW Murnau's Nosferatu.
@CreativeImbalances Yeah, he's a good musician. That's no reason write gay comments though.
@4Tounces2Freedom Lol, Kurt Cobain.
Kurt Cobain was a fan of the Birthday party that is fact
Hopefully 7 years have past and you no longer need to mention kurt in reverence to the birthday party xx
really?
Decadente y maravilloso!!
faut que tu essaies ,t’appuies davantage
Strings are a mess, Warren was a smackie I know because I saw first hand. Rowland a God.
imagine if nick cave died instead of Rowland, reports are that
Jesus made a misteke

At every angle of him, he looks just like a chick.
But he was a very good musician.
@justcauseimbored Ummm, no. Nirvana started grunge and Kurt Cobain is a MUCH better guitarist. And I don't even like Nirvana much.
