Saw Cat Power last night and she did a mind-blowingly spectacular rendition of Shivers. She made it her own, but it was so full of love and honor for Roland S. I know he always had a somewhat difficult relationship with that song, but she did him proud with it. Man, RSH, one of the best.

When you write songs, you need a balance between the creative and cool undescribable and that thing one learns through repetition and muscle memory.. some call it technique i believe....you need a perfect mix, never even stevens from my understanding of it, but some perfect lightning in a bottle type mix that the song writing guy knows is achieved , when it illicits feeling. It feels whole and with an energy that is self contained and lives outside the influence of the songwriting guy. It had been manifested, a little spark had combustion formed to a degree which enticed further actions from the universe. It has purpose, a solitary piece of written musical expression. A powerful 4 four repetition, a layer in which visions can be applied onto. Rock n roll ..
Some days I think you're right. As much as I adore Nick Cave - and I do - there are some days when I listen to his earliest material, his earliest prototypical dumb-yob punk songs (see here: ua-cam.com/video/2EHOlZQQiOY/v-deo.html) and covers of the songs that every dumb-yob punk band did covers of in those days (see here: ua-cam.com/video/6uuF4GzduBo/v-deo.html), and I think, "Gee, Nick was just a silly little Boy Next Door before Rowland got a hold on him." I think that Rowland must have smartened Nick up a lot - gave him an idea of what he could do with songwriting, an idea of how to use language intelligently and creatively in songs - and I think that Rowland gave Nick a golden opportunity to make himself noticed as a singer and bandleader with "Shivers", and that Nick just took that opportunity and ran with it. I like to think that Nick and Rowland had a wonderful creative partnership, at least for a while, and that they meant a lot to each other (at least, during the Birthday Party's early days), but I suspect that Nick never gave Rowland enough credit. Certainly not while Rowland was alive, and arguably not even after Rowland's death. If you watch AUTOLUMINESCENT, you'll notice (I did, anyway) that Nick seems rather less articulate and more awkward than you might have hoped. I found that to be the case, and I figured it had to be not just because of sadness and regret, but because of guilt. Rowland *made* Nick - Nick would never have become the performer he became if it wasn't for Rowland - and I don't think Nick ever realized just how much that was the case.

Sadly, I haven't really enjoyed the foray into ambient styles the last few albums, but I can recognize and appreciate the artistic growth. It's just not my style. Still enjoy the songwriting, though.

Personally, I think that as soon as Nick and Rowland started working together, their music - and especially Nick's lyrics - became so much more compelling and vital, imaginative and wild. I love practically everything the Birthday Party ever recorded, especially the *PRAYERS ON FIRE* album, which featured Nick singing lyrics written not just by Rowland S. Howard ("Ho-Ho"), but by Genevieve McGuckin ("Capers") and Anita Lane ("A Dead Song"). One gets the sense, listening to *PRAYERS ON FIRE* , that in those days the Birthday Party was something like a genuinely collaborative and democratic group, and not just Nick's band. I think that Rowland (and Genevieve and Anita, and Mick Harvey and Tracey Pew in their own way) all profoundly influenced Nick, and educated him and helped make him a better lyricist. But the stronger Nick's songwriting became, the more he wanted to be the *only* lyricist in the group, and his control over the group's direction became that much tighter. This, more than anything else, was the reason the Birthday Party dissolved: Nick refused to sing Rowland's lyrics, and after a while, Rowland refused to play on Nick's songs.
