Rowland S. Howard is the ultimate example of a great artist, performer and real human being, Due to his kind personality, unique voice and inherent talent he is among the legends, who marked the music scene, universally. Saw him play live was a lifetime experience. Thank you Rowland for the great music you gave us... We miss you!!!!!!
I never meant for you to get hurt And how i try, oh how i try I could never give you just what you deserve Another man would surely learn I know these words may only serve to twist the knife But i'll strive to make them heard Maybe it's better now i've gone away Maybe it's not, oh who can say And though it's hard for me to say I know you're better off this way And when i told her i didn't love her anymore She cried And when i told her her kisses were not like before She cried And when i told her another girl had caught my eye She cried And then i kissed her with a kiss That could only mean goodbye And though it's hard for me to say Maybe you're better off this way And though it's hard for me to say I know you're better off this way
It's ~ten years after the fact, watching this clip and scrolling through the comments, and I see your post...through swimming pool eyes. So sorry for your loss, Genevieve.
Just sending you the greatest of care @GenevieveMcGuckin - and hope that you are happy, fulfilled, and know that so many people were and are deeply impacted by the music you and Rowland made together… it is eternally powerful and beautiful! Thank you! 💗🙏🕊️🌟
@Jaaaaam the guitarist is a huge fan, i don't think he's ever denied it. fuck, who ISNT influenced by rowland howard's style of playing? he's the best.
i have footage on a vhs camera from the atp festival in mt buller. how can i put this on here. old school hates computers but this man should be cherished
Actually, the Jay and The Americans version is in itself a cover, the song having been first recorded by its co-composer Ted Daryll. It's on here under that name if any of you out there want to hear it. Subsequently, co-composer Greg Richards shopped the tune around to the legendary production team Leiber-Stoller, who then in turn brought the song to Jay and the Americans
+nixdawegda Rowland's Pop Crimes was equally as great. I think Pop Crimes may easily be the single best album to come out over the past several years, of course his death made that album poignant as all hell.
No Joy have also done a version of this song, reworked into He Cried, sounds exactly like this version. Lets just celebrate a good song instead of saying who ripped off who?
Martha Langston thank you so much for responding! That is so sad. My oldest brother had Chrone's disease whisk destroyed his liver. He passed ten years after his second transplant. The first one they gave him was infected with hepatitis, which further complicated his condition and misery. So I can really imagine what he went through.
+Candace Boulin I'm also new to Rowland S. Howard's talent. The first song I was kindly sent was "Dead Radio" and now I'm blown away. I'm truly sorry to hear of your brothers plight and untimely passing. I was also truly saddened by Rowlands untimely death, which is something very close to my heart.Rowland carried the silent and dormant Hepatitis C virus, which many people don't know they have 'till it's too late.It can make you VERY ill,VERY quickly-causing his liver chirrosis and the rest you know.I was H.C.V. pos. for 20 yrs and was certain I was going to die from liver failure/hepatocellular cancer.I have been blessed by recieving succesful but gruelling treatment at the point I was just on the cusp of liver chirrosis. I still have residual damage to my liver, but I'm truly astonished how Rowland managed to perform so beautifully just months before his death.A very brave man indeed. In England they only knew of/started screening for Hep.C in Sep. 1991,so I'm guessing your dear brother recieved his infected liver like so many recieved infected blood transfusions.I'm sorry for my long comment, and I'm not in any way underminding your sorrow. I just hope to raise awareness of this still very misunderstood virus which quietly causes so much heartache and misery. Enjoy your journey of discovery which is Rowland S. Howard. I know I will :)
Jessica Ann I certainly didn't feel that you were undermining my sorrow at all. I can appreciate your wanting to raise awareness. I'm sorry that you've had to endure so much. I hope you can stay strong and hopefully fully recover. Blessings to you and thanks for sharing your story. ❤️
+Candace Boulin Thank you kindly for your pleasant reply to my very long comment. (I'm not aquainted with comment board "etiquette"). I appreciate your kind words, and I also extend my hope of strength and blessings to you. One must endure life, and try to be thankful for what we have as apposed to what we want/haven't :)
@turtledeerbirdinsect She Cried was originally written by Jay & the Americans in the 1960's. Both artists have the same amount of right to use it/cover it.
@turtledeerbirdinsect uhh she cried was written in the early 60's by jay and the americans. tons of people have covered it. the horrors just make a nod to it in a lyric as they're big fans of girl groups and the shangri la's version.
Yeah the MBV-parrots Horrors can explain to someone who cares. Don't think many Rowland S Howard fans would care much about such an inconsequential band? Cover version? so what? do you really think that is the point?

Rowland inspired me to start playing guitar again after not playing for two years
awesome :)
Awesome! Rowland helped inspire me to start learning the guitar at age 46!
No, it's not possible to listen to this too many times.
That guitar gives me goosebumps.
That sound he makes out of that guitar..
Genius.
God, that guitar - that voice. Is it possible to listen to this too many times?
true genius, so missed.
What an amazing songwriter I love his songs!
He was a great songwriter but this is a cover. The most well known version might be the one by Jay and the Americans
Excellent!!!!!!!!
Brilliant songwriter and musician - miss him ...
I cried too. this man was so talented. Saw him just before he died. His new stuff was awesome!
EPIC! Back in the Day, Roland was a great influence on my guitar playing......
That pink shirt is too fucking cool. Great song
So this is my 2,000,000,001 time watching/listening to this. . . .

Down under gems.🎸
So beautiful. . . . .
Rowland Howard & The Shangri-las rolled up into one....swoon.
I never meant for you to get hurt
And how i try, oh how i try
I could never give you just what you deserve
Another man would surely learn
I know these words may only serve to twist the knife
But i'll strive to make them heard
Maybe it's better now i've gone away
Maybe it's not, oh who can say
And though it's hard for me to say
I know you're better off this way
And when i told her i didn't love her anymore
She cried
And when i told her her kisses were not like before
She cried
And when i told her another girl had caught my eye
She cried
And then i kissed her with a kiss
That could only mean goodbye
And though it's hard for me to say
Maybe you're better off this way
And though it's hard for me to say
I know you're better off this way
I would have marry this man on the spot...if he would have had me. Love you so so much Rowland, you have touched me so hard, yet so soft...
Masterpiece
So good it hurts!
this is epic beyond words.
amazing, the best guitarist in the world

@surprisedbyjoy1804 actually it's an homage to "She Cried" by Jay & the Americans which was released in 1962.
i have footage on a vhs camera from the atp festival in mt buller. how can i put this on here. old school hates computers but this man should be cherished

unfortunately "WE CEASE TO EXIST"as he sang...
R.I.P.,ROWLAND.....
@turtledeerbirdinsect the original song is by shangri-las, neither roland s. or horrors... they are both doing covers.
2,000,000,500th time.
I'm new to this artist. Could someone tell me please when and how he passed? Thank you.
He died of hepatocellular carcinoma secondary to liver cirrhosis on 30 December 2009. He was 50 years old.

@turtledeerbirdinsect She Cried was originally written by Jay & the Americans in the 1960's. Both artists have the same amount of right to use it/cover it.
it's true...
Awesome footage you have here, do you mind my asking your source of it? Thank you for uploading all the same!
Is that Dave McComb on bass?
@turtledeerbirdinsect uhh she cried was written in the early 60's by jay and the americans. tons of people have covered it. the horrors just make a nod to it in a lyric as they're big fans of girl groups and the shangri la's version.
0:53 Is it hair on his cheek or is it just a shadow?
Neither the eternal round.
I like this song sung by the daughters of eve ,but he sounds cool too😂
Del Shannon
oh my god. is he really dead. I'm crying. fucking sad. He's so thin here.
It's a Shangri-Las song
It's a Jay and the Americans song that the Shangri La's did
but its actually based off of a shangri las song. ;) he changed the gender...hehe.
Yeah the MBV-parrots Horrors can explain to someone who cares. Don't think many Rowland S Howard fans would care much about such an inconsequential band? Cover version? so what? do you really think that is the point?
What? Haha, it wasn't an insult
Atonal dross. Perhaps more overrated than Nick Cave, if thats at all possible.
