People today forget there was a different and much cleaner sense of humor in the 60's and even the early 70s and the people loved it and even Mrs Mills played along and enjoyed herself. I think she enjoyed every minute of her performing

Mrs Mills played in a jazz style called 'Stride' - it is just so jolly you can't help but enjoy it and sing along. Amazingly she was in the charts at the same time as the Beatles ( lots of people think she was a 1940s pianist) and recorded her albums on a specially set up piano at Abbey Road Studios.

Thanks for that, I wondered if this particular style of playing had a name, it is so great to listen to. Love her, I remember her well from my childhood.

Tenortalker You're correct...the piano you mentioned is still there at Abbey Road. It's still known as the Mrs Mills piano and was also used by Russ Conway and even the Fab Four themselves (the final chord on A Day In The Life & Penny Lane). It's a battered old Steinway with tin tacks pressed into the hammers. Without meaning to sound like a show off I was very lucky and honoured to play the said piano just last week in Abbey Road's Studio 2. Its sounds amazing in that room!

I'm 37, an American, but I know of Morecambe & Wise because of the Beatles' hilarious appearance on their show. They just don't make shows or comedies like this any more in the States...we had Ed Sullivan, all of the singer-hosted variety programs, and truly funny comedians without profanity or the need to put people down. I think a lot of people are missing the talent of the pop culture past.

Very very underrated Lady....Would love to hear her music style make a comeback ..everybody seems to love singing today, so why don't we have more of this.I know the words, my 90 yr old mum knows the words and I passed it on to my kids. If singing or humming to this don't make you cheer up, well....x

@@HuggyMackay A gentler time perhaps because we had recently struggled through a time of hardship and loss, and people were mourning their friends and family members no longer present. We needed time to recover and regain our strength to carry on,which we did,and this kind of music helped to heal the wounds.

They were good days and I miss them. This is why I dont mind death now, we had our era, the people we loved, the songs we listened to. I miss ya mum and I miss you Mrs Mills. Infact I miss the whole of the 1970's. It was a simple and Jolly life. Better than this crap we live in today.

Our Glad...One of the last of the great no frills sing along piano players. Very much in the tradition of the British pub piano players of yesteryear that could run a whole medley of songs one into the next for upwards of thirty minutes without a break...l was one such player fifty years ago. To Mrs Mills one could add Russ Conway and Joe,Mr Piano Henderson too. Sadly we may never see their like again.

Mrs Mills played using a tecnique known as " vamping " . ie left hand played a repetitive rhythm in the same key as the tune being delivered by the right hand. Probable that Russ Conway did likewise. Anyway, she was a happy lady that entertained and was able to make contact with everyday people, as did Morecombe and Wise. Thanks for sharing

As for those who think the 'hosts' are rude, its all scripted and from a time when you could have friendly banter.
If could ask her if she was offended, without doubt she would say "Of course not - its a joke" - and would be puzzled as to why you missed it!!

@redredreds100 You are right-on mate. Something so innocent about that time, however the two Ronnie's were outragious, but the BBC did not "twig" to it. It really all started with the "Goons" during and after the war. So I was born in '48 and by the mid fifties through to say the mid seventies the British comedy was at its best. I loved the "Navy Lark" BBC radio Sunday lunch time. Good times. Saw Tommy Cooper at Twickenham studios a couple of times. Really good show, so clever.
