A glimpse of the great Chas Hodges [ Chas and Dave ] at 19:55 . An amazing musician and piano player of the old school . Rest in Peace Chas , you are much missed .
Loved this. I have been a Mrs. Mills fan for as long as I can remember, which is a very long time(I am 75yo old). I love her style so much. Thank you for sharing.
WOW, what a fantastic star was "Our Glad", the wonderful Mrs Mills, this has veen a fantastic insight to this wonderful and much missed star who was worthy of Star Status. God bless you Glad and thank you for the music. 👍🇬🇧28/9/2019
I always thought Mrs Mills played simple stuff but this stride technique is actually very very difficult in the left hand! She really was quite talented!
Never heard of Mrs Mills before now. Now that I've seen this I'm reminded of my own Mother's playing on the family piano. She was so popular she was usually invited to play at all sorts of gatherings. At was astonished watching her reading those complicated looking squirls bounced together. My Mother gave us a love for music. My Mother played the very music Mrs Mills played as well a wide variety of light opera. I look back fondly to that time. I can now live it all over again. Greetings from Ireland.
Came across this video today after seeing a news story about the Abbey Road studio doing a "visitor experience" and mentioning the piano of Mrs Mills - a name that had completely escaped my memory. My dad used to have a lot of her albums, I particularly remember the cover of the seaside postcard one. At the time (I'd have been around 10 years old), I hated these tunes, but looking back now, there's a definite nostalgia to them. I'm particularly reminded of Scott Bradley (Post Morden Jukebox) who has a UA-cam channel of him belting out tunes on a piano, and there's a very similar vibe between Mrs Mills and some of his ragtime stuff. Great documentary. Brought back a lot of memories of people and places now long gone.
I can remember years ago at junior school, the dinner ladies coming into the class room during break where we all hid and watch them bash out old time hits on the piano and a sing song.
There is a difference between Stride Piano and Ragtime. Often people refer to Stride Piano while all they're doing is playing an easy Ragtime-like melody
Even after her death the Beatles had to retain a 'copyright' on releasing this documentary??!¬!....The 'plastic surgeon' should have given Paul an extra 'jab' when he was doing the job!!...There were some nice compliments given about her mastery of the 'stride' piano playing (on the left hand)....I've got to give them that much!!!...It's amazing---how the English even 'malign' you afgter you'e dead and can't defend yourself!!!
The first time I heard the Beatles on Ed Sullivan, I thought they were awful and I’m still of that opinion! I take Mrs Mills over the “unfab four” anytime.
As a fan of Michael Sands I consider him better than all the previous piano players he imitates, perhaps just because he is thinner, younger, and more agile than she was.
I'm a young lad of 62 , still remember and love Mrs miills. If my friends see this I care not a jot.
Lovely to see this again with my darling mum, unfortunately we lost her to cancer in 2016 Aged 57.
Lovely to hear her laugh again.
She always reminds me of Liberace, her joy of playing and having fun with n her piano.
Lovely programme. Lovely lady.

Love the stride style of piano playing that she did. She was fantastic.

As a self taught stride player myself, I loved this doco. It really helped me understand why and how I manage it.

I can remember Mrs Mills when I was only a young lad, because my mum loved her music...
😀👍
God rest her dear soul
Mrs Mills... As British as fish and chips.
May she rest in peace and rise in glory.
Mrs Mills was not known by me until 2016 but I know her songs bring memories to me and many more during the 1940's her in Britain.
Interesting documentary; one of the very few where you don't get to see much of the subject....
Love Mrs Mills my mum pkayed in this style in the 30tys East End at parties
My uncle was the doorman for 30 years at abbey road studios
You can't beat a good old sing a long with the old Joanna. Great documentry!!!
This is how they played piano in the east end back in the day but she was a bit special.
I had the privilege of playing Mrs. Mills' piano at Abbey Road, mid 1960s. ( "Shirl" with "The Fingers" )
11:43 Well done, young 'un. Of all the players here, you're the only one to have truly caught her groove. :)
Never realized that was Bobby Crush until his name came up. Took me back to Junior Showtime on tele way back in the early 70s

Let's not forget Glad was a great keyboard player and wonderful personality taken from us far too soon

4:31 Mrs Mills fans and Winifred Atwell fans fighting on Brighton Beach.
I would have loved to hear a play off/show down between them. They were equal talents.
Very missed.
Winifred Atwell, another fabulous pianist just like Mrs Mills/
