I used to work with dementia patients. I was always amazed at how pianists could play and singers could remember lyrics they hadn’t sung in years. Yet they had no clue what their name was. Music truly is a part of your soul.
I worked at an assisted living and totally agree with what you said. I remember one particular lady who we had to walk her to the dining room for meals and remind her 3 or 4 times where we were going. Not every time, but once in a while when she finished eating, she would get up, walk to the piano in the corner and play the most beautiful music. When she finished playing we would walk her out. However, sometimes she would just stop playing, one of the staff would ask if she was ready to go. She would look them straight in the eye and say, "go, I thought you said it was time to eat." Oh I loved those people so much.
Depending on how severe the disease is, with given time it does. My aunt used to be a music teacher for the best of 60 years of her life and about a decade ago, when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at the age of 84, she couldn’t remember and actively told us she couldn’t or didn’t know some pieces that she used to play and teach us play when we were kids. When she is on a good day she sits and plays quite a few of classics with the precision and dexterity that you wouldn’t be able to believe came from a 93yo, a little less than 5’tall Asian woman that has been battling her condition silently for almost two decades (at first it was just little things, but when her husband finally took her seriously and took her to see a doctor it was to the point she couldn’t remember her way back home and would often leave as if spirited away if nobody was nearby). On bad days you could see the struggle in her eyes when she sat down the piano seat, staring around wondering where she was and why she couldn’t remember why she was there, the piano being the only thing she could recognize. Often times she would ask if she could go back because Ms. Morinaga was supposed to bring her daughter over for her lessons soon. We had audio recordings of her playing many different pieces and her husband would play the cassettes to her, she would then play along but when asked what piece it was and if she knew who was playing she would often draw a blank. While the skills could stay as muscle memory and play along if shown, be it by playing with her or playing a tape of the music, she never, to the best of my knowledge, played any piece she played and taught of the period after her marriage on her own after being diagnosed. Lots of classics, but anything outside regular curriculum circa 1960’s simply didn’t exist even on good days.
It has got nothing to do with "soul" and all about our brain and how it stores memories. "Soul" is a female word that means nothing, like "spirituality" which is just religion without consequence.

Made a huge mistake watching theis in public, tears rolled down my face like a baby. The older gentleman reminds me of my late father, he loved music and piano.
There was a public piano at Newcastle Central station and a homeless man used to always play classical music on there. He became so well known to the local shops and commuters that when they hadn't seen him for a while they became concerned. Turned out he had passed away and they held a public funeral for him. Lots of people went. Wish they would bring it back cause it's always nice to hear live music
What a beautiful moment! How lucky you are if you can play a musical instrument. I love them all, especially the piano. Learn to play an instrument while you're young...you'll never, ever regret it! I wish I had.
Only consolation for me is that I can still play a pretty mean hi-fi record player . but yes that,s inspirational stuff in an ugly place the world is in .
I am over 70 and now realize just how wise, and creative we older people can be! This is beautiful! I am glad younger people got to see this..love their smiles! Such nimble fingers!
2 diffrent continents , different language , different background , different culture , don t know each other , met at a train station somewhere , without any words to say without any introduction or presentation , have their music unite and creat this wonderful piece of art.
It definitely put a smile on my face! 😊😍 Not only did the elderly gentleman seem to enjoy himself playing, but someone else, a random stranger, actually took time out to approach him and spend a little time with him. We need more of this in the world.
Florence Morale I so agree with you! Trouble is, with this beastly virus, that looks unlikely. No social distancing here - just spontaneous, genuine togetherness! What a tonic.
Lily Martens There is a virus, but imo what we are being told about it is exaggerated in order to impose more control over our lives. Hegelian dialectic! It makes me very angry. It also irritates me profoundly how little most people are prepared to do in order to dig deeper and find out for themselves what is going on - not just with the virus but about the state of the world in general, and like sheep, just follow orders from above without question. I find all the current restrictions irritating and frustrating because they are unnecessary, and are causing untold hardship and doing irreparable harm. On a personal level I am able to deal with this and find alternative ways of living day to day because of my own happy home circumstances but others are far less fortunate. Many people’s lives and livelihoods, and the economy, are being ruined for no good reason. As for enjoying life, I really do - to the utmost of my ability!
The younger guy is a fantastic rhythm player!! He knows how to play and let the older fellow really go to town in the upper register. That is when it got special for me.
I wish the world could be like this. Saw Yanni on tv play live at the Acropolis in Greece and he brought the world together with music. It was phenomenal.
The music they play Is: 0:01 When You and I Were Young Maggie, 1:04 Mozart’s Rondo Alla Turca (Turkish March), 1:47 Scott Joplin The Entertainer, 2:59 Irish Washerwoman Jig, 4:21 Moonlight Sonata, 4:40 Danny Boy, 5:55 Way Down in County Kerry (Golden Jubilee)
Just two Irishmen who don't know each other, recognizing a kindred spirit. This right here is why we should take the time to spend with our elders. They have lived an entire lifetime of experiences and events and can only enrich the lives of those around them. I cannot express how much joy this just brought me. ♥️
It amazes me the skill that pianists show when they are able to sit down and play several songs and just switch back and forth in duets like nobody's business!
So much JOY expressed in these comments! All I can add is that these two gentlemen can teach piano in Heaven to people like me who love the piano but struggle to play a hymn flawlessly, as I long to do! What a God given gift, gentlemen. Thank you for sharing with so many🙏🏻❤️
Boy, I wish that was American's attitude everywhere - us older folks are just waiting to be crumpled up and tossed away like trash. Nice to hear someone say what you said, Paradise Soon
Hey There, while I love the sentiment, I kinda think this applies to all ages everywhere. I believe in talking time to talk to people, everyone has a story & that's what respect is, caring and time for all of us. Elderly always sounds so patronising, I know lots of folks older than me (57) & they'd wack me over the head if I said they were elderly!!! What most people want is just simple respect, courtesy & a little time. I know I do & my kids do & my friends ( all ages) do! I had a lady in my doctor's waiting room tell me "Everybody's had a hard life, what I like is having a good chat!!" My stepson is 24 & he is one of the wisest humans I know, he also loves to find out a person's story! 💖

If you look at Beethoven's 9th on here, you will find that some people dislike that . Perhaps they suffer from one of the different psychological disorders that exist. Let me think up a name for this one., gerontopobia. That will do. .I expect the older gentleman had been a pro at one time.

As a 60-year old who played piano all through high school (and that's pretty much it), I can tell you this much: The older gent knows the piano inside and out. His memory and ability to improvise is beyond comparison. And, improvisation is hard. You have to have the right kind of brain to be able to bang out notes in the right key on the fly. Doing that quickly is even harder. The younger guy who happened along and joined in was amazing; he improv'd perfectly AND harmonized (even harder!!!). I'm in awe and this was great. Thank you for capturing and posting this video; it is a capsule of what life is about.

This is one of many reasons why the piano remains a beloved instrument. It is a wonderful mixture of challenging, stimulating, exciting, expressive and fun. And it's a terrific way to bond or simply play around with other people. Technology has its place, but the acoustic piano has a special kind of timeless quality.

There was a public piano at Newcastle Central station and a homeless man used to always play classical music on there. Florence Morale I so agree with you! Trouble is, with this beastly virus, that looks unlikely. No social distancing here - just spontaneous, genuine togetherness! What a tonic.
Music heals.
Florence Morale k
