everytime i watch new leaf, i turn it off right before the actual ending. seeing krabs, and plankton reconcile as friends is genuinely heartwarming, and it sucks nickelodeon was unwilling to challenge the status quo after taking the risk of delving into their past. the only true difference between the two is that the way krabs takes out his childhood trauma on the world is profitable, whereas plankton's is not. also, the song succeeds both as a joke, and a musical composition. well done
Fr, if Spongebob turned into a show with story continuity so that character develoment like this actually mattered. It could literally breathe new life into this 20+ year old show

Nickelodeon wanted to make several spin-offs, spin-offs they did end up making eventually only after Stephen Hillenburg's death, to much upset from fans. Hillenburg explicitly didn't want to evolve the show too much or produce any spin-offs, not wanting to dilute the value of the product they had (this was all prior to the original SpongeBob movie, so well over a decade ago), a fear that proved to be well founded.
This has a sense of hope to it that not many other Midwest emo intros have. Both the instrumental and plankton saying “sure” so earnestly give me a sense of hope that things could get better and there may be a light at the end of the dark tunnel. And that the characters could turn a new leaf of friendship (I know in the episode they go back to being enemies eventually lol) I feel like a lot of the Midwest emo songs and intros wallow in the sense of depression and pain but this has a slight sense of optimism and hope that is so refreshing. You’ll probably never see this comment but just know it had an impact 👍

I can quote a line from that movie with anyone from the age of 20 - 30 (atleast here in the US) and they'll know exactly what I'm talking about. SpongeBob is a monolith of a franchise. I agree dude! It is so interesting how certain sounds seem to be inherently Happy or Sad! My theory is that it's an association thing. Like since birth our brains have gotten used to hearing certain sounds in a particular emotional context, and now the brain expects that emotion to be there when hearing the sound out of context. Because the sound reminds us of all the times we heard something similar before, and we're reminded how we felt during all those past moments of listening.
