  • This is the official UA-cam version of the infamous sprite epic "Not Another Sprite Fight"
    The original Newgrounds version is here:
    www.newgrounds....
    Given the limitations that are preventing me from starting NASF 2, I've already started a remake of NASF which will be called NASF DX. It'll be longer, featuring extended fights, additional characters, new scenes, and vastly improved animation, visuals and sound design. I'll start releasing screens and more details once the animation process is going.
    Technical Info:
    Flash 8 document, minimum of version 8 Flash Player needed to view original swf file.
    Dimensions: 550x400 (Flash's default)
    FPS: 30 (on UA-cam its more like 15-20... go watch the NG version please, Sothink avi converter raped the quality)
    Frames: Barely under 16,000
    Filesize (swf): 9 mb
    FAQ:
    Q: What programs did you use to make this?
    A:
    Flash 8 (animation)
    Photoshop (some effects and special edits)
    Game Maker (sprite ripping and editing)
    Sound Forge (sound editing)
    FL Studio (some custom sounds)
    And a few other programs like Paint occasionally were used.
    Q: Are you making a sequel?
    A: YES. I'm making the freakin sequel so don't wet yourself.
    Q: When will the sequel be--
    A: I DON'T KNOW WHEN ITS GOING TO BE DONE. I don't have deadlines, I'm not a corporation, I'm just a guy who does this on his free time. I'm not obligated to make it so be grateful that I'm making it at all!
    Update: NASF 2 cannot begin until Helix has been developed enough to be useable. We are working hard on Helix so there is real progress going on.
    Also, nobody has won yet, and your arguments that Mario could not possibly beat anyone because he's just a plumber are totally irrational so go to hell.
    Yes the video quality sucks. That's the last time I use Sothink swf to avi converter. Piece of crap. So, enjoy the non-stolen official UA-cam release of NASF.

    I've seen this god-knows-how-many times ever since it first came out five years ago and I'm still impressed and find something else to appreciate every time I watch it. This is a really great animation. I also can't help but be surprised to find out you're still animating!

    Dodges and counter attacks waves of projectiles that have varying speeds and movements.
    Can maintain full running speed while jumping across platforms no wider than his shoes.
    There has been no platforming challenge too ridiculous for him to overcome, no enemy too fast or powerful for him to defeat.
    And he can do all these things while performing acrobats, airborne somersaults and cartwheels.
    His abilities have no delay between them. His reflexes are virtually limitless.

    I agree, the characters are unbalanced. This is one of the biggest reasons why I regret how I finished this project. I'm a bigger fan of Sonic than I am Mario, so that kind of bias has no effect here. Mario is an unstoppable force which is what most of his games suggest. He has indefinitely fast reflexes. Mario has conquered gods with nothing but ridiculous athletics, reaction time, wits, and a hammer, with the occasional super power.

  • @ytchip21
    @ytchip21 11 років тому +4

    Yeah, I think Mario would win. His strength and durability far surpass Sonics, not to mention Mario has near perfect reaction time and reflexes. Throw in a large supply of powerups that he is able to carry and Mario takes it. Sonic isn't able to use sheilds whenever he wants like in the Death Battle. The only way I see Sonic winning is if he is Super Sonic and Mario has no powerups. Death Battles only excuse for Sonic winning was speed, which Mario can easily counter. -_-

    Mario's balanced style is a force to be reckoned with as far as I know since he has be jumping on his foes heads for long awhile it makes sense that's his most strongest move.

    As someone who gained his entire inspiration for ever even starting animation in the first place from this one video, I have to say, I cannot wait to see NASF 2 when it finally comes out. I've been silently following Lange since the release of this video and everything that he has done has just kept getting better. I am constantly looking towards him to find new techniques for pixel animation in hopes to master them and grow off them. Looking forward to what comes from this 5+ year wait. GoodJob

  • @GreatLange
    @GreatLange  12 років тому

    You're right. The difference is that physically Mario can not move his whole body nearly as fast (lacks full body agility, he can still strike with limbs extremely fast though). Since most of Sonic's attacks involve having to make direct contact, he's at constant risk of getting caught or hit by Mario. Sonic's one or two projectile attacks would be essentially useless since Mario is also the master of projectile dodging.

    From the Mega Man X series, he was Mega Man's partner, the second main character. Instead of fighting solely with a buster, he had a beam sword called the Z saber (though he didn't get it until after the first game). He got a spin off series on the GBA called Mega Man Zero, which takes places centuries later in the timeline.

  • @GreatLange
    @GreatLange  12 років тому

    If you did pay attention to the Mario games, it would suggest he has inhumanly fast reflexes. He has invincible defense maneuvers that rely solely on timing, he has to make jumps with extreme precision even while moving very fast, and a lot of his acrobats are dependent on extraordinary timing (hence why he practically abuses the laws of physics). He can move fast too, he has a running speed that well exceeds human limits, and individually his limbs can move like lightning.

    I don't want people answering for me because no one knows how I think or how I will respond. But he summed it up pretty well.

  • @GreatLange
    @GreatLange  12 років тому

    Don't blame me, I get lost in these comment chains, and so I missed your question.
    NASF 2 is only in development in the way of content. In other words, the graphics, character models, sound design, music, and script writing. The real animation cannot begin until Helix has made significant progress. Helix doesn't have to be totally done, just completed enough with certain features intact. In the meantime, a remake of NASF is not that unrealistic. Its far less demanding of a project.

  • @GreatLange
    @GreatLange  11 років тому

    Try watching the scene again without looking away from the screen.
    Observe Zero as he leaves the scene. Observe the events beforehand. But while these events are happening, you have to be looking at the screen. Otherwise, you may think Zero just disappeared and ask what happened to him.

  • @GreatLange
    @GreatLange  15 років тому

    What you're referring to is a sprite sheet.
    There are different ways to do that. The traditional method is directly in Flash, in which you manually cut out the frames and place them in a frame by frame sequence in separate symbols.
    A method I used to do most often was use Game Maker's sprite editor, which has a tool for stringing together the frames in sprite sheets.

  • @GreatLange
    @GreatLange  11 років тому

    Yeah I do enjoy animating Death Battles. Gives me a chance to make a bunch of fights that I may have had ideas for but wouldn't have been interested enough on my own to make them. With a platform like Death Battle and all the people who are interested, it makes it worth it. I'll never get tired of sprite animation, but once I get my biggest sprite animation projects done, I'll be moving on to bigger things.

    Oh, I see. Moyea SWF to Video Converter Pro is actually really good. There's no audio lag once convertered. Except that you can only get a trial without paying for it which puts the watermark in the corner so it's pretty much pointless. There's also no lag if you make your animation into different scenes but that's no good when you're going to upload it as a single file...Maybe there won't be lag if you change Streamed sounds into normal Event sounds?

  • @GreatLange

    No. What I have planned is basically the game characters play exactly as they would in their original games, with the same controls, physics, and abilities. However, their abilities would be expanded upon and they would generally be more capable and able to maneuver a bit better. Think about how Mega Man Power Fighters featured the same game mechanics as Mega Man, but you could also wall jump, had some melee attacks, etc.

    Mario defeated the Axem Rangers, and all four of them had super speed. Its not like Mario hasn't dealt with super fast enemies before. The point being made here is that Mario has nearly flawless reaction time, which is evidenced by the challenges he's had to overcome. Sonic has almost nothing in the way of projectiles and has to make physical contact with Mario in order to attack, which only allows Mario to gain the offense.

    I thought I've made it abundantly clear at this point that Helix needs more development before I can legitimately start on NASF 2, due to the ridiculous demands of the animation that cannot be satisfied by existing software, or rather it is technically possible but would be like building a skyscraper with silverware. In the meantime I'm working on NASF DX, a remake of this, so just watch out for that one.

    Enjoyed it then, and still enjoy it now. Looking forward to NASF 2.

    Well sonic as Super Sonic has used a move that looks and acts exactly the same as Chaos Spear to take down some enemies. He can also use other chaos moves while in super form which are called "Arrow of Light" (shoots toward the target), Deflect (as the name says), and a combo move which ends in lasors being fired from his hands.

    Mario has defeated Bowser with the Star Rod (which allowed Bowser to become immeasurably more powerful with invincibility and mass healing spells), many other overpowered versions of Bower, an evil continent destroying goddess, and a variety of godlike supervillians. Super Sonic would be challenging, but like Batman, Mario always finds a way through unmatched technical skill, sheer wits, tenacity and resourcefulness.

    Mario defeated the Axem Rangers without too much trouble and they move so fast they're invisible.
    He can land on the edge of a fence post while hurtling through the air at cannonball speed.
    Everything about Mario's games suggest he has superhuman reflexes and precision.
