Yikes. Is there after-life weight-shaming, too? Ghost in the Shell shows us a world where people’s consciousness or “ghost” can be downloaded into another more technologically advanced body, but how would that work? Kyle weighs the options on this episode of Because Science, now airing for the first time on the Because Science Channel.

I remember seeing a film in the theater in 1978 called Beyond and Back about near death experiences. That film dramatized that doctor "weighing the souls" of dying patients. In the dramatization, terminal patients immediately lost 21 grams at the moment of death. It's funny, I remembered that film being narrated by Orson wells, but I looked it up and it wasn't him. Then I was thinking it must have been the "In Search of Noah's Ark" film I remember seeing as a kid. Wrong again. It was "the Man Who saw Tomorrow" about Nostradamus that Orson Wells narrated.

5:02 this probably could be used to explain why your limb feels so heavy when you're awake but the limb is asleep, or could even be used to explain why you can't during sleep paralysis. It's because your "soul" doesn't have the strength to move objects (or heavy objects at least).

    • @NoSubsWithContent

With enough will power it's possible to move your limbs during sleep paralysis (which I've done like 3 times now), some people who were vegtables at some point have reported if they tried hard enough they could focus and be able to move the less heavy parts of their bodies like fingers and toes.
However this is a matter of focus and not strength

Or just wait a few seconds for your brain to flush out the GABA and glycine that it releases to induce atonia to prevent moving in reaction to your dreams. Maybe some day, they'll produce a pill that blocks glycine and ionotropic receptors and metabotropic GABAB receptors to prevent sleep paralysis. It works with mice. 🤞

Hi kyle. Big fan of your nerdy stuffs. According to Duncan MacDougall, he found the difference between the weight of his patient immediately after death may be due to stopping of blood flow (does that immediately stop, or Duncan lied to us in the context "immediately ", maybe the difference occurred sometime later. I don't know ) . As you can see , when you are on a weight scale, if you move slightly the reading displaces compared to the reading when you stand still. But, that for a large scale difference. When you increase the precision, you can observe such small displacement caused due to gradual stoppage of blood flow. Hope you read it and react in footnotes😉

Given that it’s you your identity being stored on SSD you’re going to want to make sure it has backups. The question wouldn’t be to store it but how many backups will you have. You would also want a kind of analytical program to compare the copies to address any discrepancies in the data. Correcting bad sectors and making it available to change out faulty drives. Striping and Mirroring would help in writing speed, and the availability to restore from backups. This isn’t going to change your number much even if you added a million copies of data the weight doesn’t change, but the storage device does. This had been the thoughts I was contemplating when you had discussed your Jupiter brain idea. Once we get to the point of having a storage device that size or at least large enough to store an individual. I don’t know the technology we will have to store backups and such but would see this as a priority or we would see data loss happen very quickly due to speed issues heat and hardware failures.

    • @user-vn7ce5ig1z

But are all those backups separate individuals? Does the machine that's actually processing the data count as part of "you"? What happens if someone trips on the power-cord and the system shuts down, do you lose everything since the last backup and revert to a younger self? These are the ghosts (in the shell) that haunt me.

    • @ChrisLukes83

@@user-vn7ce5ig1z If two backups are activated then after are there now two of you? Do each of you have the same rights? Your backups that get restored are in essence clones? If your active self is destroyed by an individual on purpose, but a clone is activated is it just destruction of property sense your still around so it's not murder. This would go for cloning of flesh and blood people. If this becomes a viable option and someone is murdered but a clone is created and memories restored to a point what crime has been committed? If you have a clone while your active and it does a crime are you responsible, or get cloned to take responsibility. These would be the legal questions of cloning governments would need to make legal president.

Hi Kyle. Big Fan of your show. I have something I would like you to try and address, either as an episode, or even a personal response would be great, really.
I just watched the Rick and Morty episode, "A vat of Acid" from Season 4, and had some queries, now that portal usage has become clearer:

Point 1 : In the many world's subset of portal travel, for example, as seen in the current episode "the vat of acid" episode, the repeated travel of the episode's Morty through various 'worlds' leads to a situation where, even if the conservation of mass is satisfied (as the Morty's are simply liquefied), the information contained in the wave function that represents a particular version of Morty is not, in fact, it's highly likely that the information is stored in the remote control, as, when Rick converges the wave function into one 'net Morty', the observed 'world' function collapses to contain elements of all of the previous worlds mentioned above. In that case, one particular 'world' wave function, is now the net result of all above world wave functions, and hence, these worlds, and the choices that led to them, either do not exist any longer, and one world wave function is simply contains vastly more information, or are permanently entangled with each other, such that, any choice that led to the formation of any of the those 'worlds' now imply that all those choices must be made or not at all (the 'time' of said choice, and branching world formed by the same, would also be entangled, since the wave function has that as well, which would mean that any possibility of time being parallel ( i.e. to put it crudely, 20th May, 1300hrs IST in one world = 20th May, 1300hrs IST in the other one ) should be kicked out of the window, and any subsequent travel to these entangled 'many worlds' should now have a shifted time axis from the observer's point of view??
To cut my rambling short, any interaction between many world options should prevent subsequent travel to the same world, while simultaneously creating a load that has to be absorbed by 'something'.
Unfortunately, my understanding is insufficient for me to resolve these ideas, but I would love to hear your thoughts on this issue.
Point 2 : On the issue of travelling to entirely separate multiverses, as Dr. Tyson pointed out, the fundamental laws have a chance of being different, and hence, my assumed solution to the problem would be that the 'portal liquid', whatever it might be, forms a film that isolates the subject passing through it from the laws of the alternate multiverse, forming, for all intents and purposes, a 'law bubble', however, this law bubble too must interact with said universe, and hence, should Rick and Mortys travelling to other universes actually look like humanish blobs of utter 'blackness', surrounded by a halo of visible light, part of the energy give off by the constant micro-annihilation happening at the contact 'surfaces' where the two sets of universe wave functions interact?? Presumably, the light given off by the annihilation are simply the collapsed form of the interaction based on the observer, and furthermore, that their very ability to interact with the alternate multiverse, and any objects/people etc. contained within, is observer outcome dependent?? Are they consuming said 'portal fluid' , and hence, depleting their universe??
Again, I would love to hear your thoughts on the matter.
If what I have written above is nonsensical drivel, I apologise, and can only say that my limited knowledge and comprehension led me to these conclusions in the 30 odd minutes while watching the episode. Please do recommend some books and/ or papers on the topic(s), if you don't mind.
Thank you, and please take care of yourself. Regards

They could have all just used a different source, we don't know the actual value of how much storage the brain has, because we don't really fully understand it, besides the fact that thd brain seems to have an incredibly advanced compression algorithm so it never really forgets anything per say, it just hides it away further back, but if you were to say restudy something you've done before but forgot, you'd remember it much much faster and understand it a lot easier then you did when you first learned it.
I've also seen that number hit 5 PB, it's just an estimate.

    • @user-vn7ce5ig1z
      @user-vn7ce5ig1z 4 роки тому

Not surprisingly, the value changes all the time. The brain isn't exactly analogous to a hard-drive, it stores information in a very different way (which we don't even understand), so it's not as simple as calculating how many bytes it can store. (In _Johnny Mnemonic,_ he can store 80GB of data in the storage device in his brain, and uses a "doubler" to be able to store 160GB, but has to transfer 320GB, with the excess going into his actual brain.)

If it's connected, we could only hope to really just copy the conscious mind to a computer, which means that we as us would still exist within our bodies, and then cease once bodily function ceases. The copy would remain.
If, though, consciousness is indeed separate from the body, then such a true transfer might indeed be possible. That then opens another can of worms because the consciousness could then be equated to a soul. Either way, we as ourselves could be fully transferred and awakened in a new body.
It then becomes a question as to whether or not science can accept the possibility of a soul or ghost existing, because it's very existence independent of the body would be required in order to actually transfer you, yourself, into a new body, and not simply creating a copy. That's just my thoughts though.

I honestly would like to upload a copy of my Consciousness on the internet, but not my entire being. It'd be nice to exist in the real world, while having a digital copy running around in the internet. Then maybe, I could be in two places and have enough time in the day to do everything I need to. It's a grand idea I would entertain.

Actually a more interesting question is what if Duncan MacDougall's observation was *correct* and the weight loss of 21 grams was in fact the weight of the information that left the body. So lets take that 2.5 Petabytes/2 (1.25) and make that "x" and set the mass for 21 grams and solve for it. Well... when you rearrange things you take 21 * the c^2 (which I used the square of 300,000,000 mps) and divided by 10^ -15.... and... assuming Duncan was correct the patient on his table gave up not 2.5 Petabytes... but actually the human soul he measured gave up 1.89 Domegenegrottebytes or 209,832,151,654,154,632 Petabytes.
If you want to a real ghost in shell you're going to need a bigger hard drive. Because science!

If you can be defined in data form (what ever it may be at the time) & if it can be "frozen" as in SSD not losing data when it loses power, then no, you could be copy pasta-ed & not be unique.
Although you would be different as soon as 2 different "you" started to experience different things...
But if you can be copied that would mean you can be put in a virtual setting & analyzed, becoming predictable & all that.
What's so great about being unique anyway?

even if you manage to gather all your brain's data and make a digital copy of it, it still stays just that... a copy.
A part of your brain needs to be present, the part where the "you" is... the decision maker, the thinker, dreamer, talker, the one that shows emotions... put the brain parts that are responsible for making you you together in a synthetic body and voilà you are possibly immortal (as long as the degradation of the brain cells are stopped and the brain continues to function normally... and the artificial body is taken care of)
if someone argues that as long as the digital construction of your brain is exactly the same as the physical on, then you will continue to live in it even though your physical self is lost... I say that that's scifi bs right there...
souls aren't real and you won't magically pass over to the digital brain.
If we ever got to that point of copying brains in machines and this comes up, there's a simple test we could do to see if I was right or full of crap...
connect a person to parts of his digital brain and disconnect that physical part accordingly (these have to be the vital parts)... if his conscience isn't obstructed by some degree, then he can indeed be 100% safely "transferred" to the digital world and you have my apology!

Yea programming someone into a robot body wouldn't be a bad idea, but how would we do it if we dont know where our conscience is, how to access it and how to understand it yet? I'm no scientist I'm just a smart 14 year old. Its just a hypothesis.
