The Clapton/Phil Colins era was insane!!
Phil worked 24 hrs. A day 1970- 89
Nathan East. Lot of Smiles. Lot of Tones
I keep finding these gems. May never watch TV again.
Once I discovered YT back in 07 I never have seen a network show of the day until late last decade
TV is bad joke. I stopped watching years ago. Don't miss it either.
I watched TV for the first time in 3 years recently n I'm like wtf so this is what people do. Losers😆
TV is for suckers nowadays.
@@jerryjazzbo2845 I live in remote Payne's Creek California n get internet. No people no pollution clean air clean water
Phil Collins is so damn good! Love his drum sound.
me too, he was a fantastic drummer, but first of all, he was a great artist; unfortunately, he is very damaged
Monster drummer. Still doesn’t get enough respect
i love this tone and this era. guitar sounds so clean and futuristic while retaining those clapton blues.
I dont think it cant get any more 80's than this...
I fucking love it!
I truly love the era. Clapton’s tone is light and his noodling gives me goosebumps 🙌🏻♥️🎸
This, imo, is clapton's best band since Cream! Love the musicianship, camaraderie and synergy!
Clapton always says he didn' like his work in Cream. I think some of the songs are really great and have a lot od stand out riffs and chord progressions. Some gems in that era...
This deserves a Remaster...for the Blues Rock's History !...
They all playing ang singing with from their hearts and souls.
Drums: Phill Collins
Keyboards: Greg Phillinganes
Bass: Nathan East
AMAZING BAND
Greg & Nathan both backed Micheal Jackson tours as well. Those buys are like the dynamic Duo~

It's funny, if I heard about Clapton doing a concert with Collins and guys from MJ's band I would have said "ugh, why?" but the band really works. I forgot what a good drummer Collins was, IMO his music as a solo artist is mostly commercial drek but he's always been a great drummer, not just technically good but a drummer who is musically interesting and creative as well which is much rarer.
AWESOME!!!! Seen this band a few times!
Phil Collins is a little like Prince to me. I know that sounds like a crazy comparison, but I mean it this way: he's absolutely a genuine musical talent. Melodically, stylistically, he's a bottomless pit of cross-genre creativity. But all the stuff that gets radio airplay kind of sounds like the same one trick. You don't find his good stuff without going looking for it, but the farther you go off the beaten path the more you realize how much the musician side of him has been shortchanged by the pop star.
Phil is really a amazing drummer
This is when Phil was at the TOP of his physical conditioning and creativity.
1:08:29 Collins is supposed to go all in but he clearly forgot and look how they had a beautiful laugh over it. That's camaraderie, that's love & that's musicianship. That's how one's supposed to enjoy.
Today's mood. Eric always makes it look effortless & I thoroughly enjoy Phil playing the drums.
Yes, EC is one of the greatest electric guitar players ever - but he’s a superb singer too. What a voice.
S.R.V.
Clapton and Collins. Nothing more cool 80's than that.
°•°• 🦋 ERIC °•°•° MY GUITAR HERO OF THE DAY 🦋 °•°•°•
the happiest eric clapton i've seen...one of the best band he assembled
Also this was the first time in a long while he took to the stage as the sole guitar player, it showed he was capable of doing it. It was big for him.
The fact that he could play and sing this well when he was hammered is amazing in itself.
To be able to sing like that! One of the best blues voices ever.
BbK, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, And EC...My favoritos voices.
Привет я
how can you be genius and talented and tall and not standout ? he was just too brilliant no one can help it but listen to every son he did of him or any cover he did, he just simply makes it sound like it is his. Enough to know that he is the only who played with the highest number of singers and musicians ever , everybody wanted him in at least one album.
That's funny, he has said his voice was his weakest part..
@@pabloperez4063 Don't forget SrV
Saw Clapton live last night in nashville , Life will never be the same and I mean that genuinely
Greg and Nathan's synchronized choreographic dance during Clapton's solo is something exceptional! what a great band, what a great concert!
Eric Clapton is one of the top guitar players in the world his style will never be duplicated with his great voice and awesome guitar, thank goodness we still have all his great music to enjoy and dont forget what a great talent that he is !!!
The 1980s was such an epic time for music and here is no exception. There was such style and an openess to creativity then that you just don't see much of anymore.
Exactly!!!
It has been argued --- Rightly So --- that the 80s were THE MOST FERTILE decade , beginning to end, for music. Clapton was A WRECK in the 70s -- heroin addiction, followed by alcohol addiction. He made a nice musical and personal recovery in the 80s. His live performances regained a vitality and sense of fun that were lost in the 70s. My favorite span of EC 'S career is from 1985 til today. Quite a miracle that he survived his demons and is able to still perform at such a high level of musicianship. Thank You , ERIC, for a LIFETIME of enjoyable & Soulful music memories 😎🎸
One of the best session bands ever put together!! Phil was on fire too!!
One of the best live concerts I have watched/listened to on UA-cam. That said, born in 88’ I would give my left nut to witness a handful of these kind of epic performances.
Music now a days is trash. Rock on clap!!!!
Gotta say, the band was on better form at the Birmingham NEC show they recorded off the same tour. Clapton's solo on White Room was one of the best I've ever heard that night, and Collins seemed more comfortable letting rip too.
This is a good show too, they just don't seem as relaxed in this one.
Amazing Band. Came here because of good old Phil, and now I come to rediscover Clapton, whom I haven t really listened to since I was probably 12. A great pleasure to listen to and watch!
Wonderful, Magical, Immortal Music!!! I bow before Your Genius! Eric Clapton You are Beautiful Forever!!!🙏🙏🙏👌✊✌️🌟❣️🌹💋
Respect Clapton.
more... love
No doubt in my mind he's the greatest to ever touch six strings its just a fact its one of the laws of physics i just thought everyone should know
No not the greatest , he is very very good but Rory Gallagher and Stevie Ray Vaughan were the greatest ever playing the guitar!
@@hemmohoving2558 Amen to that.
love, love , LOVE THIS SHOW!!!!
What a energy!!!
Phil had some really nice drumming moments here. Nice to see him just drumming, which I think is all he really wanted beyond all of other success he had. What a drag that his nerve issues have robbed of what he loved most.
+stevedrums i think he started going deaf too which isn't good.
@@nicholasphelps: he caught an infection or a virus in his ear but says that he has long adjusted to the 'new' way in which he hears.
Holy Mother - what a song!!! The last vocal section - anyone else just holding their breathe for Phil's drum phil that you know will lead into Eric's solo with THOSE bent notes??
Always have thought ‘80’s EC was his finest playing. Just other-worldly!!
happiest bass player ever
that's exactly what I was thinking.
Happy and good bass player !
Edwin Colin of PT takes the cake there.
WOW!!! I can listen to Clapton & Phill Collins all day long!!! When Eric Clapton began his solo career. The best thing he did was to have Phill Collins produce his album!!
Phil offered to produce a comeback record for Eric since he hadn't really done anything since rehab in Antigua for heroin addiction. The music landscape had changed since he withdrew to deal with his addiction
Simply the greatest musical artist over the past 100 years - regardless of genre.
The voice of Clapton with the passion for the music is like he grew up on the Mississippi Delta... Born in raised in a country thousands of miles from where the blues started it's amazing how much in love he fell for the blues and doesn't top notch job at playing it
I get the feeling that at times they were hoping Phil would chill a bit, but ...... he just drove even harder! The rest of the band looked knackered. When the drummer has the most energy syndrome! Brilliant.
I can't pinpoint every little thing that I like about this gig since this comment would become too long. But I'll never fail to keep thanking Eric and all his amazing musician friends for everything they have done for us. My gratitude for all those artists and the list includes all the names that haven't played with Eric but are my heroes, is colossal! Thank you eternally!
1986! That was a looong time ago, I hadn't gotten into Eric Clapton, but I remember seeing Genesis 12 years before this, in the Deutschland Halle and asking my friend Pete Fox who the amazing voice behind Peter Gabriel was? and it was Phil Collins, an amazing drummer and outstanding singer! Eric is one of the best and so is Phil Collins and we are all a lot older! :-)
The best parts of this concert starts at 0:00
2 of the best musicians/singers of their time! Gotta love Eric Clapton and Phil Collins!❤
Another decade, new arrangements, new tones, new band, same godly performance as always, it was neverending with this guy!!
This is probably the best Clapton show ever recorded. Thank you so much for sharing! 🎸
The best band after Cream
Amazing concert 🎵🎵🎶🎶🔊
Eric Clapton , Phil Collins (drums), Nathan East (bass) and Greg Phillinganes (keyboards).
🎵🎵🎶🎶🎸✨✨✨✨✨🔊
Eric is a signature guitarist. Self made guitar licks, he is very recognizable, clearly unique, the way he choose his notes in those solos, man, thats only him alone. Like a label, on his own. In a category of originality like J.J. Cale, Slash, Santana, many more, we all know. I love you all
Self made guitar licks? Hilarious. He copped everything Albert King and Freddie King ever did. He literally played a note-for-note copies of Albert King solos on a couple of of his early Cream hits and openly admitted to it.
Was it Chuck Berry that once said, "There's nothing new under the Sun."
Phil put his all into this...brilliant vocals as usual and the drumming out of this world. I found some of Eric Clapton's best through Phil. Now I love Eric's "love" break up songs. They had fun this night.
i just keep coming back to this performance. one of my favorites by him. his prime imo
Check out the NEC show of same year👌🎸
That vocal on “White Room” is just exceptional. So much flavor!
Phil Collins ed Eric Clapton ... stellare
Loved the long blues tune! Always enjoy when Clapton lets the other musicians have solos.
ok, I've finally gotta speak, though.
I LIKED PHIL COLLINS VOCALS, even though nobody else here does!!! They kept me company on long trips & at camp sites in the 80s-90s. Fond memories of a really nice male voice and very romantic songs. Didn't know he was a drummer until recently, and such a GOOD drummer!
+Colette Davis I always liked Phil's voice, You're not alone. Love and Peace.
+Colette Davis Hi, if you like Phil, look into a Genesis album from 1977 called 'Seconds Out'. (Peter Gabriel was the lead singer, then he left and Phil came from behind drums and sang lead. Sounded like Gabriel because they were original members of Genesis.) But on 'seconds out', Phil sings and plays drums with other drummers. Very strong music, for 'Live' it is excellent, better than studio. Best song: Cinema Show. Second best song: Supper's Ready. Might be able to get it here at the tube. Peace to you.
+Tres Majestus ...... original members of GENESIS! Of course! A couple more things make sense. Thanks for telling this story above. Phil just seems like a regular guy to me, yet supremely talented with vocals and drums.... very under-rated.
+Bob Cardenaz Thanks, Bob! Good to hear!
Colette Davis Hi Colette, when Peter Gabriel left Genesis and then Steve hackett the guitarist left, they put out an album called 'and then there were 3'. There is a really good song on there called 'deep in the motherlode' with the lyric 'go west young man', it's an excellent 'Phil' song, catchy. Probably can find it here. Finally, here's some trivia: Phil was part of the audience in 'Hard Day's Night'.
Peace.
that tone... Unbelievable.. GOD!!!!
Srv And Clapton are the best of blues guitarists
i'm agree with you ;))
Hendrix?
HaliniSnow I wouldn’t say he was a blues guitarist per say... he played blues here and there but a big part of his music was Psychedelic rock
Never heard of Rory Gallagher?
What about Jeff Beck?
Great gig.
I remember being disappointed he wasn't going to play electric guitar .when I went to the recording of MTV's Unplugged. How wrong was I ?
Personally, I prefer listening to him on the electric then the acoustic, I am sure that he plays any guitar brilliantly, That is who he is
Easily my favorite live show of his. But I'm biased. I was 16 in 1986 and 'August' remains my favorite album of his and Phil remains one of my biggest drumming influences. I thought Phil exceeded expectations playing music not necessarily in his natural wheelhouse. Phil later went on to say that this was the best band he had EVER worked with. High praise from someone who worked with pretty much everyone.
I don't know how the hell anybody could give a thumbs down on this concert but these guys were great! Been a Clapton fan since he started pretty much and there ain't no better!
AMAZING! Wish I could have been there!
JUST SO DAMN GOOD!!!!!!!!!!! Wish I had some fancy words, as Mr. Clapton & the whole band deserves them here but...............WOW! Another concert I wish I had been attending!!!!!!!!!! Never has or will be anyone like Mr. Clapton way back, now, and ever.....he is AMAZING!!!!!!! Thank you for still performing for us!!!!!
I love Clapton. He is one gifted man. He can play great if he is high or not. All these bands out there do not compare to Clapton. He IS God. Thank you for this video. I enjoyed it so much. I hear he will be touring in 2022, one year later than planned due to the pandemic.
I love the sound of Clapton's guitar. I don't just mean how he plays (that too, though); I mean the actual axe he's playing.
I bet that's a prototype of the Eric Clapton Signature Strat: he retired Blackie from road duty in 1985, and the first Clapton Signature Strats hit the market around 1988. They were for my money one of the greatest guitars Fender made in the 1980s, and vastly better than the later Clapton Signature reissues with the boring old Noiseless pickups in them. Those Fender Lace Sensors they made for a little while before Fender & Don Lace had their falling out were gorgeous fat single coils that had all the Strat sound without the excessive twang and quack you even hear from Blackie on some of the late-70s live recordings.
When I was a teenager, I found a c.1988 Strat Plus in a pawn shop for a crazy deal. I had no idea at the time that it was basically the Clapton Signature Strat without a really expensive branding. It has the Lace pickups, the TBX tone pot, and even has a few extra bells & whistles Clapton's gutar didn't, like one of the early Wilkinson roller nuts and locking tuners. It's the sweetest off-the-rack electric I ever had that I didn't cobble together myself.
They are getting rarer these days, but they are still vastly cheaper than any of the proper signature series. If this is the era of Clapton you like best, and this is the tone you want, they're great guitars and this wonderful show just reminded me how great they are.
First clapton signature prototype. 21 frets instead of 22. Truss rod not on the nut.
Fantastico concert!!!!
Proud to be a witness of this, even 37 years later in You Tube. I stll feel a chosen one for that.
Such a great talent. MY favorite musician/ singer.
Nathan East :D He always has a lot of fun playing :)
yep.and i love that it transfered over to eric and the rest of the band. Its evident that having fun is part of the formula that brings out them awesome performances. This one below has always been my favorite with the smiling thing
ua-cam.com/video/fX5USg8_1gA/v-deo.html
Was and is Clapton's favorite bassist, but I miss Gadd on drums.................
Não me canso de escutar ano 86 Eric Clapton , Phill Collins tocando bateria não tem pra ninguém.
Tio-pé Florianópolis 2020.
Damn... Phil can drum... and then some!
The best live on. A marvellous Eric but Phil on drums the one!!
Great Concert! Loved every minute of it. Same ol blues..whew
just look at Phil , will ya ? young and strong. where have the years gone friend ?
30.01.2023-72year
Energy music, now the times had passed and all the ideals are gone, now they had to play for the 11S, like Neil Young, I see this concert like a sign of it could have been and never was the world. This music is like sacred for me, I was listening to this man for all my life I have all his official discography and some bootlegs. Specially I love the Blues Disc and the 12th night bootlegs. What's going to be our future with no artists like this one?. I'm afraid of the future, I'm only 34 but I'm just not able to live as I live without these lyrics, this music, sometimes I feel it's the only thing make me feel alive. In my head his guitars continue the riffs when I'm not listening I'm llistening in my head sometimes. If Clapton is God I want him to change the world.
Un petit "CLAPTON" cela ne peut pas faire de Mal!!!.....👌♥️🎸🇫🇷
-big thanks for sharing this video ! It's amazing, a miracle or don't know what, great-great record ....
amazing! favorite concert of all time
Wow! Phill collins doing the drums! Two all time greats going at it!
I remember getting this on videotape. A favorite. I wasn't wild about his '80s output, although I liked "Forever Man" a lot. I saw him on the Money & Cigarettes, where his guitar sounds were impeccable, his playing was dynamic and great. Changed my life. There were some great moments on the Behind The Sun tour, but he was headed into the Phil Collins era. A bit too much chorus for my taste. However, this tour was brilliant(I didn't see it live). Eric is forced to play more guitar in a 4-piece setting, which is awesome. You can't much better players to back him. Greg Philengaines is a brilliant player and vocalist, and, of course, Nathan still plays with Eric, can play anything.
I enjoyed this era of Eric's music. Although a little commercial, it was typical for the time. I did a lot of dancing to these tunes in the privacy of our den. Fun, fun, fun. Eric looks great and his playing is superb!
I have get this dvd from my teacher when I was learning music for the first time, one of the best, favorite one from most of fans.
One of the best concerts I ever had seen
А я обожаю его "River of Tears" - шедевральная вещь и очень малоизвестная, по-моему, лучшая у Эрика...
Everything is perfect with this performance, watched this dvd so many times. A lot of best versions in one show especially Holy Mother, White room Badge and Layla..wish Wanna was on the album :(
phil collins: best drummer with eric!fantastic breaks the drums hero !!!
Check out Steve gadd
Amazingly tight band! Superbly done! Good work, guys!
Jesus Christ the solo in I shot the sheriff is out of this world.
What has Christ do do with that. It was his personal ability and efforts.
so good to see Phil Collins at the drums :)
Nothing better!!
Thanks for posting this video. i l love it, i'm a huge Clapton fan.
Clapton is why I play guitar. He's my hero. But I had a funny thought seeing this. Clapton plays at Montreux, and they love him playing the blues. Stevie Ray Vaughan plays there, and they all freak out, and try to boo him off the stage... unbelievable.
Though Stevie Ray Vaughan was booed when he appeared at Montreux Jazz Festival for the first time in 1982, it wasn't actually the whole audience. According to some of the people who were there (band members, techies, audience members, Vaughan himself) it was just a few people but the acoustics of the auditorium made it sound like it was a lot more, or even the entire audience. Plus, when Vaughan and Double Trouble appeared at Montreux again in 1985, everyone applauded and overwhelmingly loved them.
I think the main reason he was booed is because:
1. Vaughan and Double Trouble did not have Clapton's reputation and fame in 1982. Hell, their first album wasn't until 1983. Again though, when they appeared again in 1985, they were met with massively positive feedback from the audience, which was probably a combination of them being more well known, having about 3 albums behind them, and the festival easing away from pure jazz music.
2. Montrex Jazz Festival was just that in the early 80's. A Jazz festival. It had only really started featuring other styles of music in the late 70's, most likily due to the popularity of the other genres, but still predominantly and almost exclusively featured jazz musicians and bands. When an audience is expecting jazz music and then up comes a pure texas blues-man, absolutely rocking his guitar and playing on 11, there was obviously gonna be some who did not expect nor want that style of music at the festival. It's more of a testiment that Vaughan won the majority of them over with just how bloody incredible he was.
@@KnightOfAwesometonyou are so right. Thanks for sharing and making this billing/ audience expectation thing clear. Jazz audiences don’t want to hear rockin blues. They want fast tempos and swinging horns. Not fat snare drums and Marshall amps. Still EC is awesome and still with us.
Saw Eric about 6 Times in Switzerland. The Intro with Crossroads he did a few Times.Just great!
I Love this excelsior in Montreux! Nice to see Eric Clapton grace and embrace it.

This is a great gig. Thanks for posting.

My pleasure. Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers!
Me encanta ❤ me encanta ❤ me encanta Eric Clapton 🎸💋
Lo miismoo digo
i'm glad this is posted here. this is my favorite version that I've seen of Clapton doing Crossroads. unfortunately my dvd player ruined my copy of this concert :(
Don't worry, you have 'youtube'.
As a kid one of my first concert was this tour and to this day still on of my favorites after all theses years. This was a supergroup and thank you for showing this concert in full. This one is cool because it is more loose in the playing vs. any offical tour recording and that equals epic moments.
When you saw this, at the time were y'all aware of just how legendary EC was? Phil Collins is no slouch either.
I went for EC. Then word got out, before social media, that he would be touring with "special guests". Immediately I figured since Phil produced and played on the album they were supporting he might show up. Then I begged my dad to take me. They Were My Two Faves at the time. I got there and saw the white Gretch kit and I was so in aw seeing it in person I was getting into Cream at the time so I was a bit aware of ECs legacy. By chance the way the seats were set up I was as close as I have ever been to my idol (Collins).Even to this days 3 Genesis concerts and one solo tour later. (30 ft.) :) another rarity Collins did a drum solo? Not a drum duet a drum solo!. Some stops on the tour he sang in the air tonight but for some reason that happened. Ticket price I believe was under 15 bucks!
@@chriszenner9652 wow that’s amazing
Not rushed, improvisation of great musicians. Clapton was kicking out drugs.
This is Erics Best 80s period 85-89
clapton didnt have a good period in the eighties
Thanks so much for this. Greatest musical discovery on UA-cam since the Van Sessions.
