I have not seen a lot of Alec Steele. But I have a hard time taking his content too seriously. He just has every gadget under the sun for forging. I am a beginner blacksmith myself and being a teenager my materials are very limited. I've put almost 20 hours of painstaking work into my first blade. Working it in my leaf blower coal forge and with a cheap belt sander. It took my brother and I over two hours and six drill bits on my dad's old press to drill the two holes I needed in my tang. I hope to have a lot of those gadgets someday but the work I've put into this first backwoods project I'll never forget. It comes with a certain pride. Keep forging folks. Through the fire, through the blood.
There's nothing like a hand-made knife, especially one you've made yourself. You could always change the grind to a convex edge if you find it wavers and make it twice as strong, but being as well made as it is, you may not need to. Now you just need to make a leather sheath for it and your ferro rod. Great looking and performing bit of gear, Mike, anyone would be proud to own it. Congrats on your entry into the blacksmithing world. Alex is a champ for teaching you.
HE may not drink, but his age isn't the issue. The legal age in the uk is a spritely 18 for alcohol purchase, and in the presence of an adult (with a meal i believe) you can drink at 16. In private (as the camp is) the age is over 6 y/o.
Alec, your a great teacher for someone who's quite young. Your patient. Yet you don't yell. ( I've had a teacher who was my sewing teacher. She yelled if you didn't quite get something. Was not patient. ). You can get ideas across with out the person feeling like a geek. And most importantly your not arrogant. I like that if you make a mistake you admit it correct it and go on. I enjoy watching your videos and I'm starting to work with wire and using tools to shape it. Kerp up thr great work.
Great video! Don’t worry about the grind, mate! If you look at traditional Scandinavian knives you’ll find that they actually have fairly high grinds. This whole “shallow scandi grind” thing is a relatively new trend and most likely sprung from the use of thicker stock in modern day knives. Traditional knives tend to be thin with a focus on slicing and cutting rather than batoning. Your knife looks great and I doubt you’ll have any issues with rolling the edge as long as you maintain it properly! Cheers from Sweden, mate!
That was great to see from scratch...alex is pretty talented with a very clear accent and good workshop...a great duo vid...thanks guys for making us wise...good stuff...cheers
Awesome job on your first knife Mike. You should feel super proud. Alec is a great teacher himself, can’t wait to subscribe to his channel as well. I too vote for Alec heading over to your cabin AND yes, YOU should go back to Alec’s shop and complete some other blacksmithing bushcraft tools. I bet your father enjoyed your build and this video. 👍👌
You need to do a video of you making a sheath for it now. Maybe at the pallet cabin w your dad. Miss him in your vids. He steals the show! Lol. Great knife, TA!
THAT HAS TO BE A THRILL: making a personal knife and learning from another fine young craftsperson! TA Outdoors is already taking you on an amazing journey. Thank your for bringing us along. PS, some of the video of the grinding and what not was wonderful to see.
Absolutely GRAND! now i know the story behind your knife. its really awesome that you got to make it with the guidance of alec. you should be very proud of it i know i would be.
Congrats, cool collaboration. Swinging the hammer like an old pro. 01 tool steel forges well. Love that power hammer -- make that with a bushcraft knife and a tree
That’s a cracking knife. Great job. Just to add, that little notch Alec filed in is the choil. It was originally designed like you have and for the exact same purpose. Over time the design merged with the finger grip. Today many mistake the choil for the grip.
Really awesome I was waiting for this video their is nothing more satisfying than making your own knife that you will use for years to come I made a bushcraft knife and every time I am in the woods I use it for everything great job
Wow. That was fascinating! I had no idea, start to finish, how one would make a knife. It's a beaut. And you're right: it creates feather-sticks like it was made to do just that, along with being strong enough to cut thick pieces with a baton as well as using the point. Impressive.
Absolut fantastic Video and Knive!! This Blacksmith is young, but he knows exactly what to do and he is a good teacher.Workmansship at its best. Greetings from Germany
I fallow both your channel and Alec Steele, it is great to see you two working together. I rely enjoyed the video. Dont forget to treat the wood with some linseed oil from time to time.
I watched you making this first on Alec's channel. It's nice to see it put through some real world testing. Sense you made the knife yourself you'll always think of that time when you use it. Those memories makes the knife even better. :)
Great video Mike and Alec. Shame you messed the grind up a little but you can toughen the edge up a great deal by adding a micro bevel. Some people prefer the look of the higher grind. The sharpening notch is also known as a "Spanish notch" been around for years. You do need to strop the edge though as there will be a tiny burr left from the grinding. Sandy
Hi Sandy, yes was thinking I will probably end up making a micro bevel from just stropping it alone. Think it will help strengthen the knife anyway to be honest! Lovely knife though, it's my precious! Thanks for the info on the Spanish notch, didn't know that. - Mike
We've used stones as knives, of course even a modern steel knife with small flaws is going to do its job. Cool to see him doing still lots of manual labor, a lot of people nowadays just buy steel plates and grind them down on the belt sander, which is fine too but I feel a lot of people missing out on a lot of in depth knowledge that way. If you keep that one, or decide to make a second version that you eventually keep, you should also look for making your own custom sheath for it.
Great video both on your channel and the series on Alec's. I look forward to him spending some Bushcrafting time with you. Time to get an awesome holster made!
So much fun having you visit! You did a killer job!!
Good grief, making even one nail seems like a major orchestrated piece of work. Thank you for sharing. I can't even rehone my kitchen knife...lol
Alec Steele take my money 🙏🏻
Best of British YT channels! Very cool as always. Great content
Great job you guy's! Really enjoyed that !
Lignum..... wow that is some serious wood.

Bring him to visit the camp for some coffee or beer!!!
Jenard de Castro Alec is 20 he doesn't drink beer
Not very long ago in one of his videos some told him they should meet and have a beer and he said he didn't drink

Why y'all lookin' to get the boy drunk?

It probably has less resistance with that grind too making batoning easier.
Bra sagt :)
@@johndifrancisco3642 MY thoughts ExAcTlY !!!
Came over from Alec’s channel. Very nice. I wouldn’t worry about the edge given you had Alec for the grind and temper.
That is something to be proud of. I have always wanted to learn how to Blacksmith.
Found both of you gents independently - so cool to see you hanging out! Great vids fellas!
It must be so cool knowing you had a big hand in making your own bushcraft tool.
It looks very functional and stylish too.
Two of my favorite British UA-camrs right there
That was great to see from scratch...alex is pretty talented with a very clear accent and good workshop...a great duo vid...thanks guys for making us wise...good stuff...cheers
I find you always get more enjoyment and self perfection out of something you have made yourself
Me too! I'm now in love with this knife
Outstanding! You should be very proud of that knife, every time you use it.

You should be proud. You have shown me the amount of work that goes into producing a quality knife, which I may not have appreciated before 👍
Wow. Look at Mike go. Good job guys. Looks beautiful.
Two of my favourite channels ! Alec needs to go out to camp with you now !
Alec comes across as a natural teacher,he would be great at teaching in a school lovely knifes, great vid very intereasting
You should be very proud of yourself. That is an awesome bushcraft knife. Congratulations!!!!
Love the Gonzales Flag in the back ground. "Come and Take it!"
The music near the end of the workshop portion was epic.
My two fav channels merged into one! Brilliant!!!
I really loved watching the birth of your new knife and wishing it was mine.
Absolutely GRAND! now i know the story behind your knife. its really awesome that you got to make it with the guidance of alec. you should be very proud of it i know i would be.
I found Alec’s channel a while ago, and discovered yours just recently. I was so happy to find out you guys are good friends!
Welcome aboard! Alec is a great guy.

Wow what a great job and beautiful knife indeed. You should be proud.
Great piece of art!
Great video!
Thanks much and blessings!
my two favourite youtubers in one place. gutted i didnt see this sooner
God damn it that banging noise is so cool!!! I love it!
Can't wait to see you put it to work at the camp , awesome.
That has to be the best felling, to design and build a knife with your own hands. and then get to use it. Great Job.
Congrats, cool collaboration. Swinging the hammer like an old pro. 01 tool steel forges well. Love that power hammer -- make that with a bushcraft knife and a tree

I am a subscriber of both you and Alec and yourself. I was excited to see you in his shop.
You're a natural Mike! That was thoroughly impressive and you made one sweet knife
Really nice video, you not only do the knife and show how to and still do the camp test. I really enjoy
Awesome job by both you and Alec, Mike. - Jeremy
Great video. Don't worry about the mistake with the grind, If it works it works.

Super cool. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Love what you and Mike do!
Alec, what a genius smithy! Such an artist! What a fascinating video collaboration. Thanks!
I fallow both your channel and Alec Steele, it is great to see you two working together. I rely enjoyed the video. Dont forget to treat the wood with some linseed oil from time to time.
One of the best knife build videos i've seen, plus the trial/review after great as well.
I have a couple of 01 Steel Bushcraft knives made by a friend of mine. A good heat treat can make a well made blade almost indistructable.
I watched you making this first on Alec's channel. It's nice to see it put through some real world testing. Sense you made the knife yourself you'll always think of that time when you use it. Those memories makes the knife even better. :)
Yeah, but just make sure DBK don't get hold of it! They do some un-real testing ;)
Un-real is the word.
Looking at their channel it seems they aren't even pretending to be serious bushcrafters anymore, so much clickbait.
That’s a nice blade for sure!
such a beautiful yet simple knife. I'm so jealous. Just the thought of using a knife that you made must be really humbling.
Great job, Mike! This makes Forged in Fire on the History Channel look like child's play.
Great job thanks for sharing with us enjoyed watching wish you all the very best until next time my friend
Alec seems to be a splendid teacher. Great choice on ironwood handles and the tall grind is cool looking
He is a quality teacher
This was amazing to see being done. Really makes you appreciate a fine blade like the one you've crafted. Awesome video and knife!
Just great to see two youtubers join and craft! Top work boys :)

Great video. Awesome knife. Must feel good to use a tool made with your own hands.
Well done buddy .. looks great Bushcraft knife .. cheers Chris & Sam
Love the name of the knife keep up the good work
Slick work on the knife, nothing beats making your own kit by hand, has way more sentimental value compared to kit you buy off the shelf ~Peace~
Thanks Zed, and you are right about that. The knife is holding up well so far! Just need to get a sheath for it now..
Nice looking knife. I like the higher grind.
I really love the high grind
Very nice, its got to be your favorite knife ever im sure,
Great job. Love that grind.
!!Nice!! Your own knife made with your own hands bet it feels good nice work 👍☺
That looked like amazing fun!
Wow that’s a really nice knife. Thank you for a good video as always. Keep up the good work.
Nice job! first knive is most of the time the hardest to do, and even with the big grind it does all it needs to do, well done!
Very cool video. Lots of work but nicely done. Great video work.
