- Join me as I get some help from blacksmith youtuber Alec Steele! I ask Alec if he can forge a barrel eye scotch auger which I use for some of my big bushcraft builds. Stay tuned for a video soon where I put the auger to the test!

Time to get Alec back into the woods???
I'm going camping this weekend and i'm gonna go fishing
Hell yeah!
Yes
Definitely! Quick, before he disappears back to Montana for a couple of years!
Yes it is time to get Alec in the woods, I think that would be an amazing video.
I especially like how Alec made his twisting wrench on a whim and is still using it .
That kinda stuff is the sign of an experienced blacksmith. You need to make a specific tool 'on the fly' for a project, and suddenly you've found yourself using the same hacked together tools for years.
The best kind of tool is the kind that works!
Like he always says: "Need a tool? Make a tool!"
Love this collaboration. Two of my favourite UA-camrs! Great video!
I agree, both are amazing
... I mean, is it a collaberation yet? This is just a recycled version of Alec's video and no clips of the newly forged auger being used....soooo...?
@@Burn77oas7 well tas video came out first and he said he was going to release a video using it soon 🤣 either way it's great they're giving eachother a spotlight!
I’m sure if he had time to perfect the technique, he could’ve built it the traditional way. But time constraints probably hindered that more than anything.
Awesome video.
That big adjustable spanner with a big bar welded to it blew my mind, so simple yet so clever.
Is it an Alex steel episode if he doesn't have to start over?
Alec*
@@renealbrechtsen9743 yeah autocorrect had some fun with my post didn't it?
I mean...we all hope he doesn't but he always does better on the 2nd/3rd/17th try
@@USMCRabbit I really preffer someone showing the whole process with warts and all. There is no real learning without making mistakes. If you really want to learn and understand something, you should try, fail, find out what went wrong and try again untill you succeed. This way you will learn it for life and you will be able to utilise new skills in the future projects.
@@ogi22 I like seeing the whole process as well.
Now I want to see Alec forge one, from start to finish! Nice collab...we need more TA/Steele collabs!
Just a note: If the timing on the threads of the snail isn't right, the auger bit won't pull itself into the wood, and it won't function properly. You'll have to apply constant downward pressure to force it to cut, while turning.
|
Also, without the side cutting nibs, the hole will end up much rougher. Possibly less problematic with green wood, but it still bugged my hand-tool lovers soul, heh.
Old Sneelock has some really good videos on auger bits and restoring them, if Alec ever has time and is curious he might check out his channel.

All that said, I really enjoyed the video and I am perpetually awed by Alec's talent and drive!
I'm curious to check out more of your content too, now, I don't know how I'd missed you, but glad this video was recommended to me!
Alec almost never exactly knows how to make the thing he is making in his videos I think that's part of the fun of it for him, figuring it with trial and error until he does know what he's doing.
Also I think what is admirable: He shows his mistakes. Not only the big but also the small ones. He doesn't show himself in "the best light" but always "This is what I am thinking/going through when making something new" and that is just... admirable in itself
@@Mirro18 Also also the way he always tackles stuff as a learning opportunity. Even if something turns out to be a shitshow, he just shrugs and learns from it and moves on! Kid wasn't even shaving and he's been my inspiration for years.
This video is like when two of your mates know each other even though one is from work and one is from home!
So great to see a young man carrying on the trade so it doesn't become lost.
Even a pro like Alec can learn something new every day. Thanks for the educational video
TA is how I learned about Alec. I’ve been watching ever since.
Other way around for me!
I knew them both, separately ...
It is like an oddly satisfying cross over episode!
Same 🙌
Same
Alec is such a cool dude.
This is so cool! Loved that we could see the development in strategy forging the auger.
I use to watch your videos all the time. I have not seen any in a while but I now watch alec all the time. Today he has kinda reconnected me to your videos. Great vid.
Great to see you and Alec in a video together! Cheers
Two of my favorite channels together 😄
That was so cool! Always wondered how they’re made. They’re an invaluable tool out in the bush. Cool to see 2 channels I subscribe of my 2 fav things (the outdoors and blacksmithing) working together. Was cool to see Alecs process of trial and error as he finds the path he’s going to use to create it. Similar to finding your way through the forest. End result a hand made tool for the outdoors that can play a huge part in providing shelter from the elements. I can’t like this video enough. Thanks for sharing 😊
Awesome content from two of the nicest British UA-camrs, very happy to sit down with a cup of tea and watch you two.
Wow so proud of alec for take up the challenge really enjoyed watching
I really like collaborations, this one was excellent. Thanks from Chicago
Your original colabs got me watching Alec. Now I'm really into blacksmithing, planning to build up my own business that I have started. Thanks 👍
Best of luck!
That’s awesome to hear!
Both of you have come a long way! I started watching you build the buschcraft camp about 5 years ago, and similarly with Alec when he had less than 40'000 subs back in the dingy little shop.
Hope you both continue to grow and have amazing adventures.
Brilliant video Mike. Looking forward to seeing you again at the Bush Craft Show.
Cheers! See you there
So nice to see you make a collab with Alec !
Great to see you guys get back together for another collaboration, and Welcome home Alec, it’s great to have you back on UK soil 👍🏼
My 2 favorites UA-camrs
I just watched you older video with Alec at your bush camp and it was really fun to watch. You two are a great team to watch.
Damn, I remember watching Alec's video about 5 years ago, he doesn't age.
Must be all that damascus in his blood stream by now lol
He's 23 :) - started very young, and still young
Somewhere, in a basement, behind a locked door, there’s a anvil steadily corroding and crumbling away, stamped with DG-Foundry and stained with the slightest smear of blood.
@The Walrus Jesus christ, could you make alec sound anymore like Dorian grey ?
Can't age... He's forge welded, hardened and quenched. They never got him to normalise though...🤔
Nice to see you back in Alec's shop. Of course it is much easier now that he's back in your neck of the woods.
Have a whole set of those in two different lengths! Made them myself...love em!!!!
My Dad had a regular fluted drill made by a blacksmith. He started with a rod of the outer diameter of the finished drill bit. Gouged out (I do not know how) 2, straight fluting channels along the flanks of the shaft, except for 2” on one end for where the bit would be held by the chuck. Then, he heated the shaft, and twisted it, so that the fluting became spiral channels up the sides of the bit. Lastly, he ground off the tip at angles so it would bite into the material being drilled.

Can not wait to see you use it on site. looks amazing.
Alec is such a craftsman, the amount of talent and dedication to his craft is astounding
Awesome, now get Alec back into the bush and let's do some cool medieval blacksmithing!!
I've been waiting for this... And so glad to see it. Excellent video and colab
WOW! I never thought about HOW the auger is made. Very interesting 😊
Great history lesson and awesome to see Alec back in a collab with you. Interesting to watch the process of making this drill. 💯❤👍
It looks like a very powerful drill. Congratulations on Alec's work. Really nice video. Thanks a lot. 👍😉
A great display of creativity in action
Thanks for sharing.
Another awesome collaboration by two of my favorite Brit's. Looking forward to many more in the future.
Thank you for introducing me to the bushcraft arts
this contrast in editing! powerful energyfilled, somewhat industrial heavy blows (alec) vs. calm natural chill (TA) love it!
Great seeing you two together again!
I’m here from Alec. I’m a minute in and decided to subscribe. I look forward to watching more videos. ✌️❤️
People are awesome. This was great editing and forging.
Wow! Alec is one heck of a genius!! Loved the video!
Amazing, so much skill.
Big fan of both your channels. always love these colabs
Alec is definitely a perfectionist! 💯 was good to see you guys, doing another collaboration. Now that he’s back in the UK 🇬🇧😅.
Such an Amazing skill!!
When I first started for the GPO we use to use a finer version to put phone wires in through wooden door and window frames. On the tool list they were called a 'bell hanger's gimlet'.
What a great team-up from my favorite UA-camrs!
U guys are both great. Excellent collab
Interesting and informative. Thank you!
Very nice project. I always wanted one of those. Maybe i can forge one now.
This is like full circle. I found your channel the time you made the knife and have watch scenes.
Awesome colab. I watch both channels. 👍🏻👏🏻
Seeing this on my home page made my day!
Nice work. Just put an old tec deck bit into a power drill yesterday, works fine.
That's really cool guy's well done looks really good.
I've used soil augers before, to collect soil samples from a field, never seen a one for use with wood working before, but seeing the intro video shows how obvious and useful one would be for early carpenters
What a great Colab mike.great video
Consistently great collabs.
Alex probably made them back in his grade school days
Great video
awesome video mate i love Alec steels work
Love this collab!
Love the colab.
Mike POOR ALEC LOL Hes some what a perfectionist so I can understand where he's coming from about starting over lol. I was wondering when this video was coming.
Wow Nice work I didn’t know how to make a drillbit now I do
i love collaboration vids, awesome
Love all your vids always learn tons thanks for taking your time to make all of these great vids Love ya man.
I just started you viking house building. And wondered what the tools were. Nice one. 👍
Great Job.
Ever so cool! 👍😏 happy summer from Canada 🇨🇦
The colab I didn’t know I wanted until I needed it
Thank you Mike
Alec and his signature grinn or smile 😁 Great callaboration guys 👍👍👍👍
Great narration teacher Mike 👍🇵🇭
Quite interesting and great video
Really enjoyed this colas!
Amazing!
What a crossover!
Great video. Love Alex haha
nice work,
The long flutes on the bit are mainly for removing shavings so the second one still had a good chance of working with some straightening.
Very interesting. I love blacksmithing. Not sure I could actually do it though lol
Already subbed to both channels for years, but great collaboration. Both dads next and then all 4 together please.
By coincidence, I was wondering the same thing (how augers were made) just a week ago or so. It's a lot easier than I was imagining...
A nice change of pace for your channel.
Talented lad Alec 👍
INCRÍVEL....ESPETACULAR...
A peace of art!!!!
Great video mate, i loved forging and metal work in school, got an "A" in it, but have you ever seen the bushcraft tool called the "settlers Wrench" from Shawn with the wild in the U.S.. Its similar to a Scotch Auger but the pipe/ handle part is also a circular chisel the same diameter as the drill bit, great for bushcraft projects, i got one from him and honestly, its up there with the axe, saw and knife! Check it out great bit of kit for making all kind of bushcraft stuff!
Good Job Ladz.
Excellent content
I'VE NEVER SEEN HIM THAT SLOW, USUALLY HES HIGH ENERGY HIGH IMPACT
Was hoping to see it in action at the end!
I need one of those
The true test of a tool is if it works. Did it work? We call them here (PNW) Scotcheyed Bits. I use them not only for Bushcraft but around the Garden and even projects within the home. Have had quite a few old hand drills, some large ones with a plate on its end and a bubble level to push against your stomach when using it. Yeah, it takes a bit longer, but seems to be more connecting when using them.
But I wish I knew how to Blacksmith like this guy, could have come in handy throughout life.
