I've been watching Alec's videos for ages and only came across TA Outdoors last week with the log cabin series! Small UA-cam world!
These guests are great. It really highlights Alec's hard earned skill as a blacksmith when he's teaching new folks forging.

O admire the fact that you are not only able to make a knife, but that you are able to teach how you do something and why you are doing it.

Hey Alec im watching the video now. I have an idea of your interested though. Now that the frame lock knife is done why don't you try your hand at a Swiss army knife. Like with pliers, knife, corkscrew, bottle opener, ext. Or what ever you want, I think you would have fun with that challenge. Anyways keep doing you, and stay awesome.
I know what you meant about the grinding the knife. I have to reshape about 20 knives every day. And they are all different type off knives with cracks, broken tips, hole that i have to grind out. Great video Alec. Your keeping my mood up all day

Hey Alec, check this out. This is the data sheet for a very common O1 tool steel, it shows what hardness you get at a specific cooling speed. I suggest going for something below 300 HV, so you would need to cool your steel down from 800°c to around 600°c in roughly 5 min. Your cooling speed was probably way too fast. Maybe put it in the forge together with a block of steel. Slower is always better ;)

Nice, I get the notification right as I'm uploading the video for my first Kitchen Knife with zero grind(be careful of the tip, I broke mine and had to reshape it) & Hidden tang. 1095, with a wicked hamon. I've had a few people asking me about O1 lately. I haven't used it in a long time, but that and 1084 are great starter steels, especially for heat treat. Take it easy.
These are the types of collabs that I'm sure the fans and the presenters alike enjoy. Alec seemed to be in his element teaching as well. Great stuff!

Howdy Alec! I’d love to see you make a San Mai blade where the spine half of the blade is a mono steel and the edge half is Damascus (or vice versa)
Ya know, I decided in retirement I wanted to get into wood working as a hobby. This brought me of course to UA-cam to help learn woodworking, but I soon found that the UA-cam maker community wood, metal, they really are a community, yeah there may be conflicts here and there but I just find it awesome
Nice to see how you take time to show in simple and effective instruction!
Little tip, if you leave the center line thicker, before heat treat, when you grind down the bevels, there is less chance of warp & if you have to surface grind one side more, you don't have to worry about moving center. I've had times where i had to take more off 1 side and the center moved, just a little bit. Some people heat treat before doing bevels, I split the difference.

OMG two of my favourite youtubers together!
O1 is also prone to air hardening when normalizing. I use a carbide drill bit for all my hole drilling now. Less bother and if you get a sheet of martensite you can still go through it
I love how well you teach people to be able to do this themselves. And hand over the hammer and they get a personal piece.

Or perhaps a seperate video on file work on some scraps of metal. I live in France and here it is difficult to find metal for knife making, I don't want to spend a fortune on good metal for my first attempts so i use old circular saw blades cut up with an angle grinder. Any other ideas for cheap metal would be welcome. Keep up the good work Alec. Great collabs.

Yes, that straight blade is very important! Just try sharpening a bent blade on a flat whetstone! (Referring to around minute 13 of the video.)

I am 12 and have started blacksmithing I hope to make my own damascus stell too its so col and sharp and all the other 12 year olds I know ar going to b impressd with my skill
Well, I've only recently begun to follow you and I've just watched 4 years of episodes in 3 days and that is not supposed to happen :D . Anyhows, have you tried to make a Japanese sai? I'm interested in how you would make it.
Next thing Alec needs to try is making his own Micarta knife scales from fabric and resin.
That tool steel is insane. Carbide bits, as high an RPM as you can manage, and a slow feed rate, might get it done (Reduction of chip load compensates fir the lack of rpms). If all goes well that's going to be one tough blade.

I think the very first time I used blue dykem was in 1986-87 as part of metalwork at school.
I wasn't keen on metalwork at the time tho as it was ALL handwork and wood was a lot easier. Also my teacher wasn't keen on me making a metal skeletal crossbow hahaha.. So wood it had to be.
