Quick! I need you to grow another 100 year old Ash! I'll start on longevity drugs so I can get the batch of axes. I think my credit card will still be good in 2173.
What an great vid! I thoroughly enjoyed working with Mike on this incredible axe project. I'm quite overwhelmed by the responses on here, thank you for all the kind comments. For those who missed out on the first batch, don't worry! The Forge is warming up for a second run ...
One of your best videos ever. I’ve watched dozens of hours of axe making, but never seen the details of a tannery. Quite unbelievable to amount of work and time that goes into a simple piece of leather.
What a great presentation...from beginning to end. The map, the journey past Stonehenge, and of course, the hundred year old stately ash. If I were younger, I would jump on one in a heartbeat. The price is very fair considering the workmanship in every aspect of production. The leather production alone, screams quality, historical significance, and perfection.
My guy, you should be paid to shill this hard. In fact, I already didn't like the presentation, and you have just made it even worse with your fake bullshit. 'The leather production screams quality,' are you a leather worker or a historian, how do you know what perfection is? The logic and reasoning in your comment screams idiocy, and I AM an expert in that.
@@switters8679 I AM a professional leather worker and that axe sheath looks pretty damn high quality to me. I dunno what in particular upset you about Mike's presentation but I enjoyed it.
Congratulations in a beautiful custom hand axe and sheath. A lifetime tool. My bushcraft hand axe is a COUNCIL TOOL WOODCRAFT model. Made in USA. The poll is hardened to prevent mushrooming.
Amazing vid. One thing you could add is the importance of straight grain and grain orientation for haft/handle strength. Your ash is incredibly straight and aligned correctly as can be seen at 7:40 so should last for ages (with oiling).. Good workmanship all round, congratulations.
What a dream realized! The planning, the prep work, the execution & now the distribution...all that, so that we too could enjoy a beautiful piece of history (the ash tree) & exceptional craftsmanship the serves small business, men & women. Way to go. Love your channel & so stoked I'll be able to have my very own TA Outdoors axe!
Hey Mike I know I'm late on the post, but man I want to say I'm proud of you man you have came a long way. I've been watching the series a long time, you definitely deserve it. Take care my friend.
Absolutely amazing - So good that people are still doing this kind of thing from the tanning and forging right through to your finished axe... Well done, you deserve to feel very proud.
That looks like some quality, and more importantly, traditional manufacturing, resulting in an exquisite tool that will probably last someone a lifetime. If I didn't have three other axes already, I'd be all over this, but I do, so...
After watching one of your previous videos I went over to Joe website at Thornwood forge and ordered that hatchet. I can honestly say the workmanship is outstanding. Great communication with Joe himself too. Thank you. Merry Christmas to all
Excellent and highly informative presentation. A brilliant example of great engineering and craftsmanship skills alongside your organizational management of this must have project. Thank you.
Dude... total respect from start to finish, %100 to you and everyone involved, truly mean that.... however...I hate to say it, but it's far from economical for the majority that would rather simply modify their techniques to use what they can afford Personally, even though being more well off than some, personally, I'd rather run through we'll say 3 "average" axes over 5+ years for still half the price... Respect the dedication and craft, but sadly in today's age, most average people would agree bc most can't afford it I hope you continue to do what you enjoy and spread the positive lifestyle that is being lost, but in reality, it's gotta be more commercially viable and accessible to the majority
Beautiful piece of work. You can see that it is well buit. Your narration of these processes of traditional crafts completes the story. Very inspiring and happy to see those people putting their souls for others. No wonder they are sold out already. Great job !
I sent my daughter, who is into spoon carving, and seems to enjoy the hobby. There are several different types of hatches, also handmade and a price that reflects that hard 2ork that took to make it.
"Waiting 'axe'-actly this long for the video? Axe-ellent anticipation! My channel's chopping up similar topics - let's 'axe-celerate' our shared love for all things axes!"
I’m not an outdoorsy person but I really enjoy your videos. I am a crafter and really enjoy watching you and your dad work with your hands. Love the saga of the woodlands. Happy holidays to you and your family and a wonderful new year to you.
Absolutely outstanding. Such skill and expertise at every level of your construction. So hard for these crafts to continue in modern Britain - especially tanning. Environmental legislation renders it almost unworkable (though it's fine to export our dirty work abroad?) and this dirtiest job isn't for the squeamish. As a forester and axe user I really appreciated this - I've made couple of bits and bobs in a forge I know that I'll never make a blacksmith - proper graft and a dark art! Well done for doing this and telling the story.
Amazing! Being an engineer I see how quickly we are moving away from that kind of attachment and zeal for nature and simple things. Sad that I couldn't buy one to bring here to the Canadian west coast. Keep inspiring!
The forge work was of course incredible but WOW, the leather tannery!!!! What an incredible process! I'd love one of those hatchets, it could hang on the wall as art when not being used!
Amazing view in to that great looking axe you have designed an to joe making it a peace of art congratulations to you both an good luck on your journey
Very cool video! Love introducing the processes used to create these axes and history as well. Well shot and explained, and makes you appreciate every step of the process, and how much really goes in to something handcrafted!
No words to describe the quality of the axe, the handle and the sheath as well. You, young man can be considered a very model of a craftsman for the actual 'no purpose' generation. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 fro an old man - Brazil 🇧🇷 P.s.: I find interesting the use of a light wood such as ash wood to make axes handles. We do not have ash in our country so we generally use hard and heavy woods for this purpose.
Awesome video man! That’s so cool thanks for sharing every step of the process! Really makes me appreciate the craftsmanship and the fact it’s all locally sourced to you.
Very good narrating on this video Mike! Well done! You have a very pleasant voice to listen to. Great job, over an awesome craftsmanship video of your product. 😁👍🏼😁👍🏼
Congratulations young man 🎉🎉🎉 What a wonderful heirloom you've made to pass on to not only family, but the world!! Wishing you and the whole family a Very Merry Christmas and a Very Blessed New Year🎉🎉🥳🥳🙏🕊🙏🕊🙏🕊🫰💜💜💜
Absolutely beautiful! I've watched a fair few smithing videos, and while this one is very good in that regard also, I especially appreciated seeing the leather making process, that I hadn't come across before. If only you'd have had a bit of footage of the leather working as well 😉 Great project, documentation and video, and the axe itself looks great as well! Will definitely be getting one before I move out of the UK, that level of craftsmanship, dedication and using all local talent and raw materials needs all possible support ❤

Could I reserve one in the next batch?

@@BryceByerleyI doubt he's used all the wood yet.
Well then I need to know if you ship to Sweden or I need to ask help from a friend in the UK?
The way Joe quickly draws those contour lines on the handle you can tell he's a master craftsman and has made many tools in his time.
My thoughts exactly! I couldn't believe my eyes when he did that! What a boss!
If you watch he never changes his grip on the pencil and uses his fingers as a guide. The outline was already formed by a template so it follows it.
Too kind!

Amazing job and a beautiful and practical axe 👍
Hey Mike, very proud to say I now own Axe no. 69, bought it from you in person at the bushcraft festival this weekend, so pleased with it!
16 mins of ultimate joy. This story was amazing. Thankyou for the video!!

Having watched the whole process I am amazed at how you've managed to sell then at such a low price. Incredible craftsmanship.
My Agawa Canyon axe arrived yesterday, and now you have me drooling over another one before I even had a chance to use it. 🤤
It's beautiful.
I have the axe that my dad made, it's old and battered but still feels better in my hand than others that I own.
What gorgeous craftsmanship and a beautiful story.

Everything about that axe looks outstanding, that guy Joe is a seriously talented craftsman. No surprise they sold out, superb.
Thanks for your kind words :)
I honestly got shivers when you showed that great ash tree laying on the forest floor. There's just something about trees that is just so majestic.

Man that really puts it into perspective the quality of work that goes into things.
That was the best informative video I think I've ever seen for axe forging. And I've seen them all I think. Great hatchet by the way.
Beautiful! If I ever have need of a bushcraft axe this is the one I want.

Beautiful little hatchet. Great to get it made in England, supporting local craftsmen. Always a good thing!

It's a beauty. Looks like it has a substantial head. Too many small axes have heads that are too light. Defeats the purpose of an axe.
Congratulations Sir!
Bushcraft tea and medals for your fabulous creation. Very satisfying.
Congratulations! That's such a great legacy! You should be so proud! What a beautiful axe!!
Best advert so far
Old world craftsmanship is the best..🙏
Came for the smithing, stayed for the section on the Tannery! Super interesting video!!👍
