- www.fender.com/products/search... The new version of the Supersonic from Fender now has a 6V6 tube power amp section. Based on the Deluxe Reverb power section, it has a very clean tone paired with an ultra smooth overdrive tone...sounds like an advertisement, no? Well...it ain't! I just thought everyone should hear the tones this bad boy can get.
I've been a custom amplifier designer for over 20 years and this little amp has it all!
simply amazing tone
That is a great thing to hear since it is the amplifier I purchased for use with my strat.
Ive had one of these amps for a while now....it is, quite simply, the best sounding amp Ive ever owned!!!!!
This is one great DEMO! Comprehensive, logical, step by step.
Thank You so much. And this Baby sounds great!!
it IS Jack Black...Great guy, capable guitarist and just doin' what he LOVES to do just like the rest of us.
Thank you gearman, for showing the tonal range of this beast. Best review so far of this amp!
This amp sounds bad ass!!! You are one of the best gear demo dudes out here. Thanks for puttin' in the time.
Really cool amplifier! A new classic that will be around for a long time. Thanks for the test drive.
Had mine for ages... It just gets more interesting... Truly inspiring amp....
The best review I've seen.!! I dont want to listen to someone telling me this is the volume nob, press this pedal for this, etc. You get right to it-I just want to hear what it sounds like. Thanks
Did you notice cabinet rattle with this model? Not so much at low volumes but when you start to wind it up? I know most amps have a spot or a note where they will buzz a bit but I heard these rattle a lot?
I got one of these Supersonic 22W amps last April, although it did not arrive for 2 months (so really I got it in June), but it was worth the wait. It is a very versatile amp good for someone who needs both crystal clean & high gain channels. Of the two, I think that the "Vintage" clean channel is superior to most amps (including the Deluxe Reverb, which is more mushy than this), plus that mid boost is awesome and I leave it on just about all the time. The "Burn" gain channel is pretty versatile too, because there are two gain control plus a master volume, so you can really shape the sound. Whether or not you like the high gain better than something like a Vox or Marshall is a matter of taste, but I think it does a pretty good job of making overdrive and distortion tones. It is an awesome amp for live shows (very portable because it is 1x12") and it gets a pretty nice distortion sound even at lower volumes, so it can work as a practice amp too (where Vox amp tone just sucks when not cranked). It is very easy to get a great feedback sound with this amp, which made me smile the first time I heard it at a pretty low volume. If you use effects, there is an effects loop so you can make the guitar signal stronger going in, which is awesomeness. After getting this amp, I put my c. 1973 Silverface Twin Reverb in the closet, retiring it as my main gig amp. That is saying something. I think you can use this amp for just about any style you want to play except the heaviest of metal, where you might need to add some kind of distortion boxes (like the Boss MT-1 or Metal Core) or stuff like punk/alt rock where you can add a fuzz box to shape the distortion tone. I highly recommend testing this one out if you want a versatile amp with great clean and high gain sounds that is also very portable!
Just bought one of these. Can’t wait till it gets here!
Really helps me to decide what amp to buy. Appreciate the effort.
Dude, you do the best reviews on the tube. Great stuff demos that a working musician can use.
I just bought this amp today, it is friggin amazing, kicks the shit out of my 1995 USA built blues deluxe.
Have the old-school 60 W and I love it
Thanks for another great demo!
Eric, you're the BEST! I love this shit! The more gear the better, and you never disappoint!
I just got it myself. I tested it up with a DeeLuxe...the added burn got me. (and the single input with very sturdy foot pedal.
I also tested the verb up with a boss Reverb and M9 verb 60s spring, it met or surpassed. very great point, good tool. i use it on 3 for band rehearsal and can't wait for live.
Great demo!Thanks!
Works wonders as a demo amp. Smooth fender midrange. It's cool to see this one in your line up.
Great demo... LOVE the amp. Gotta get me one! Soon!
diggin this amp's overdrive!!
I think this might be one of the best sounding and most practical amps I've ever seen. It'd sound great running through a British-voiced 2x12 along with the stock speaker, yes?
Great Review. Gave a good Idea of what it's capable of
best amp demos on youtube... period!
'yonder'. love it man, a real review.
Very cool amp, love it.
Favolous sound with the neck pickups! awesome clean sound.FENDER IS THE BEST!
I realy hate it when my tubes get smashed =p
Gearmanndude!, Great run threw on this amp. So far the this is the best demo Ive seen on this fairly new 22wt version of the Super Sonic.
It would be cool if more amp companies would ship you amps for demo'ing...hint hint amp manufactures!!!! There are only 4 or 5 of you guys in YT land that realy do honest Demos and your the King of them all.
Excellent demo! Fantastic tones. I ordered this amp a few days ago, should have it next week. Love it !!!!
so how is it working out for you?
Joel D ended up returning it lol
Kelster Von Shredster Why?
bcjoly long story. let's just say I was under pressure to "make it work" and that rarely works. You need to spend time with an amp to really decide if it works or not. Now, after going through a few very expensive boutique amps, I'm realizing that there is something special and simple about a good clean Fender amp. The perfect tone building palette. Right now, I'm leaning towards the Princeton reissue '65 with upgraded Celestion gold speaker.....available on ebay and reverb.com
That sounds great!
Dude, Fender should give you money for doing such great demos of their gear ;-)
This is the amp I need but I didn't know before I saw this video...
Long live gearmandude !
Excellent Test Review Dude Blues Man
just got one, when I first tried it at home there was a popping sound when swching to the burn chnl, but when I turned the burn vol up to about 4 the popping calmed down A LOT- it's an awesome lil amp and loud enough to make yer ears hurt
It seems to have its own 'particular' sound.
Very cool amp. I'll have to check it out. Reminds of a combination of the Deluxe Reverb and the old Prosonic 60 watt amp. I used to have the Prosonic but sold it. I love my Deluxe Reverb. Interested to hear what it sounds like live.
Nice review gearmandude! Thanks
Thats a sweet sounding amp !!
Man you sound like Jack Black
+SlenderMan Yes, He is.
the reverb on this amp is awesome! :O
Super demo!
Amp sounds great! All the pickup selections offered something nice....Rocks too can pour on a good amount of gain that's built-in would like to get one for it versatility if nothing else.
So, here it is 10 years later and I think this is Fender's best amp under 40 watts. Maybe their best overall. Thanks for the demo (if you're still alive.)
Have this amp in sea foam green. Just love it. First decent amp I have owned since I was a kid and had an old Fender Reverb which cost 50 bucks used at the time. Same amp would go for God knows how much now.
I love this amp.
Did I just see Gear Man Dude use reverb? Damn now I've seen everything.
I recently bought one of these. I play funk/jazz. I only use the clean tone. I love it, def loud enough for small/med size gigs. the fat tone is some times too much (too bright). Great amp for the price, reverb is good I believe its spring. I never use the burn channel
That overdrive is smooth.
Great video, thanks for posting...I am looking to buy this amp.
@gearmanndude
Thanks for the demo. I had the first version of this amp and the speaker was (combo) was not able to handle the power. . VIntage 30 "rated at 50 watts" as I recall. This version also seems to sound better. The Peavey Classic series and the Peavey Blues seem to have had better full on overdrive tones. But this new version sounds like Fender is right there as well.
My father's '59 Duo-Jet sounds fantastic through my AC30. Hope it sounds good through this amp. It has been nearly 5 years since I played through one.
great sounding amp! that burn channel is yummy.
gearmandude,
Love your videos guy. Really appreciate all the detailed reviews you have done over the years. I do have a question for you however. If you happen to still have your SS22, do you know what preamps it has in it? I have had one for about a year and a half now and mine does not seem to have the break up and crunch that yours has. Any thoughts?
sounds cool
Lovable !!
Perfect Machine...
Yes, it should be good for both.
demoed one at the store against a dr. to my surprise I like this one better. love the clean.
I've had my SS22 for a couple weeks now - went with the blonde. Great amp. Love it. I put in a Celestion greenback G12H 55 Hz spkr. Sounds great!
do you notice any white noise/hiss when its idling?
When you say "idling", do you mean when it's in stand by mode? When my amp is in stand by mode it's dead silent. When I'm ready to play and I turn the stand by switch off, set the channel volumes to about 4, I only hear a little normal amp hum. I hear that with every tube amp I've ever owned. It's barely audible in the normal channel. In the drive channel where I have the gains set pretty high, it's a little more noticeable, but still relatively quiet to me. If I play with single coil guitars and I have my guitar's volume turned up, that's when I hear single coil hum. Turning down the guitar's volume of course makes the single coil hum go away. So all in all I think it's a pretty quiet amp - especially in the clean channel. In my experience all amps make some noise. This one is relatively quiet in my opinion. I've changed the speaker, but still have the stock tubes in there for now. Are you hearing a hiss with your amp?*****
yes but i don't play at 4! I'm talking bedroom/recording levels. Never heard an amp this bad. Returned 4 of them!
***** If you do some research online you will find that problem is fixable and not anything really major.
***** XDDDDDDDDDDDD 4?? i don't think the amp is the problem what are the odds of you getting 4 Bad amps in a row? Amps are noisy
Lovable !!
By the way, is that mic a Sennheiser e906?
i´m searching for my 1st mic and I´m really considering that Sennheiser
YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY CORRECT, THANKS FOR THE REMINDER.
:^)
PS - GOOD SENSE OF HUMOR, LORD BLESS.
Gearmandude you are awesome. If I had a god dang job Id own this and a Twin Reverb....if only.
@NanoGuitarist yes it does but i love my all tube jet city. 2 12AX7's and 2 EL34's(comes with 84's) and you're all set:D
Played this at my local guitar store with a les paul. Holy cow i would have traded in all my gear for just those two items. Beautiful cleans and i got the perfect SRV and Joe Bonamassa tones!
No surprise the burn channel is fantastic! The two gain stages plus the master volume is very versatile, as well as the three EQ knobs. Still... the clean tones.... (quiet sob)
Nice!
This dude sounds like Jack Black.
maybe it is lol.
Or Christian Slater
@Ilovemyfender2 it's a Sennheiser e609....about a hundred bucks...works for me! ROCK ON! GMD
Nice review. This amp sounds great on here. If didn't already own a Blues Deluxe RI, I'd think about getting one.
Hi, what's the difference between the deluxe blackface reissue, about total volume especially on clean ? You also did a hrd III test, is it more louder on clean? Ty
I have the supersonic 6L6 head, I love it!!! I use this thing for guitar, bass and baritone. And it works like a charm.
Your ears must be bleeding with volume at 2-3! :-P
wicked amp
What happened if you turn up the clean channel, does the amp cranck a little bit ? Great demo by the way !!!
In stock form this is by far the best sounding amp Fender has ever made.
Great review Gearmandude! I bought the SS60 combo last week but didn't like it. Too much power so I couldn't get into the power amp section without blowing out my windows. It also sounded thin to me...to much treble and not enough bass. Today I checked out the SS22 at Guitar Center and I liked it better than the SS60. Just had a better vibe and the clean channel seemed to have more low end. Same guitar too. So I ordered the blonde SS22 and it should arrive next week. Anxious to check it out. Thanks for the vid!
Stratodan 27 a Celestion G12T-100 will really fatten up a single 12 combo, based on speaker comparison videos I listen to. Used in the Fender Stage 160 amp back in the day.
ouh yeah that's great sound!!!!!!
Lovable !!
By the way, is that mic a Sennheiser e906? I´m searching for my 1st mic and I´m really considering that Sennheiser.
How good is the speaker on the amp?
Thanks!!
@Flygtr tough to answer...I really dig this Super Sonic, but the MAZ has been drug around the country for 7 years now, and is still kickin' ass for me...so I'd have to say the MAZ...but more out of familiarity than anything...ROCK ON! GMD
Just got mine this weekend. Sweet zombie jesus, this amp is a dream. If youre a fan of the voice of a Fender amp, the super sonic will keep you up for days playing it. Im so in love. This bad boy sounds the tops, shrank my pedal board and impresses everybody that hears it.
Thanks for doing a complete run through of all the controls on the amp. Most demo's don't show everything. I bought one of these from Proshop guitars with the gold and black tolex and vintage 30 speaker. I used is for southern rock, ballsy blues and then there's the D. Gilmore sounds. I sold my 72 Marshall to downsize and just as you said, I "DON'T" use pedals except for the boss roland echo in the loop. This amp rocks for everything. I also have the 60 head which has not enough bass, EQ in loop
Great demo! I apologize if I missed it somewhere, but it would be useful to know exactly WHAT you've taking the time to demo there... the SS 22, the 60 watt... 10" speaker, 12" speaker, etc... there are several iterations of this amp out there; which are we watching here? Thanks!
Thats what I was thinking, you can really elimnate the shrill twang factor of a Strat with this amp , and make it buttery
nice review ty!!
Cool !
best sound
I a/b this and the Deluxe RI, and I actually like the SS better, more scooped sound less mid on the clean. Which do you think is better on the clean tone comp?
Hey man.. great demo...
I am contemplating this OR a DR.Z carmen ghia or maz jr..
I have played both the Super Sonic 22 and the maz for several hours and really like the tones of both,
HOWever, i found the super sonic to be MUCH more comfortable to play in that the attack was not as immediate as on the Z which was very unforgiving.
It might have had to do with the fact that I was able to run the Super Sonic a lot louder than the Z.
Whats your take on this as you have both ?
Thanks
your the best
Very nice sound ! It sound the quality of Fender amps ! I don't really like the knobs, I prefer these traditional knobs like those on my Fender Deluxe amp. But it's only a matter of taste. The essential is the sound ! Thanks for the demo of the Super Sonic ! The microphone was plugged in what ?
Hey, +gearmanndude: what's your opinion about the old and new Super Sonic amps?
I think you want this if you want to use more of the drive from the amp. If you usually just use clean/semi-dirt sounds and have drive pedals to push the amp for solos then the HRD is good as well. I bet this one is a little lighter.
Sounds like a very versatile Fender amp. A lot of boutique amps are very overrated. I know I own a bunch, and this one sounds like a real winner. Thanks GMD!
Hi there,
I'm a germandude and after i saw your vid, i bought this amp asap!
my next amp
Kelly Clark did u get it
"The tube cage might keep those monkeys off your tubes."
I almost bought it! 💀
hey ! great vid as usual !!!
what about a battle between this baby and a Marshall 2266c ?
Hi Gmd, I know that you have an aversion to reverb, but I must say that your soloing while the reverb was on 6/7 was some of the most soulful tasty stuff I have ever heard you play. Just sayin'
This has such a desirable distorted tone to me, plus a great clean tone like from a twin reverb.
I love this amp! my local music store sells them, as well as keeps one in the shop at all times for people to test gear and jam out on. i'm more of a metal shred guy, but i bought one because the clean tones were amazing.
own this amp, the surf green one, changed the tubes love it alot
btw this isnt jack black, he demos all this stuff cuz he works at guitar emporium, the one about 15 minutes from my house btw, you guys should try the time bomb boost and luther drive also very nice pedals and very nicely priced
(the ones he makes)
