Ahh The Bob Ross for musicians. Soothing voice and attention to detail is very.....calming. The world may finally end from Nuclear War but.....this fender super sonic will sound heavenly.
HAHA! Thats funny. I love watching these videos, i could watch them all day. Sometimes ive gotta stop myself and get back to what i do haha! But talk about a notebook of tips ive gotten from a few folks here on youtube that were kind enough to spread their knowledge.
I own a SS 22. My best tip for lowering the noise floor is to put one of those volume pedals in the effects loop to use as a master volume, turn the preamp up a little and the volume down a little, this will make the hiss go away. Makes the amp much more usable.
Very fine training on how to approach any fix . One stage at a time and check the section . One can only hope the newbies listen up well ! Nichicon 105c are about 6to 8 time longer life than the ICs the ESR is also much better fine improvement . ☠👾
I fix the odd hifi amp and I have on occasion drilled a few holes in the pcb to aid airflow around hot components that are scorching the board. Doesn't always look pretty and the tracking does limit what you can do in some cases, worth it to extend the life of something though.
I’ve used a supersonic 22 combo for years with no issues. I guess we all have different standards, tony Mackenzie gave a very favourable review of this amp and he is no fool, the guy has a stable of all the boutique heads and is an electronics expert.
Very nice channel. I watch alot of the "how to" stuff. Uncle Doug...Guitoligist....D-lab this one is new to me. I subscribed as soon as I hit this one. Thanks. Did my own fix/upgrade to my Fender Quad Reverb. So fun. I dont have the tech skills for my Red Knob Fender Twin with all those push/pulls. Is it cald "The red devil" ? Or is it the "evil twin" ? Either way, its dead right now. Had it since 1983. I probably can't afford to have it brought back to life anyway. Will be watching your vids & taking notes on some trick fixes for now. Thanks & stay grounded.
Watching alot of your videos, I see you really understand the circuits and your methodical and meticulous troubleshooting are top notch. I love seeing people who are professionals and take craftsmanship to the highest level. If shipping wasn’t so expensive (along with everything else), I would be requesting a repair and service along with any recommended upgrades. You do excellent work and help the music community. You and Uncle Doug are my favorites. You both have naturally soothing but passionate voices. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge.
Nice work Lyle. I would be interested in hearing your opinion of component precision values. I noticed some 20%+/- on some caps you installed. I assume is some areas of the amp, it is not as important?
Hey Russell, Lyle said that he will be going on Tone Talk, both in his Friedman Runt 20 video and in the chat of the Tone Talk Andy Timmons and Robert Keeley episode. I hope that he has the Excalibre 15 ready to order by then. I think he could capitalize on the exposure to a new audience with some additional sales if people can order it right then. On a completely unrelated topic, I think a lot of people join in the whiskey drinking while watching the evening Tone Talk shows...
I've been shopping for a supersonic 22, but I've been a little skittish pulling the trigger. These videos have been helpful, maybe I will find one with some of the work already done to give it the best chance to last
Does the Supersonic 22 have the same design flaws as the Supersonic?I know the reverb is not as strong as on my DRRI or PRRI.I have heard the reverb circuit is a different circuit because of the burn channel design? Thanks!
Great video as per usual. Love the carol burnett. Wonder if you have seen your fellow Nashvillian’s video about where the tone comes from in amps (Jim Lill). If he’s right…
...but people still keep buying Fender... I did like my old Super Sonic 60 head though, it sounded great on the BassMan setting. The Blues Junior is also a prime example of how not to build an amp that last a long time!
I have one of these amps. Unbeknownst to me the crappy IC caps had started to leaked causing the PT to get really hot. I replaced all of them. Still have hum issues so I'll check these smaller caps and diodes too. Between this amp and the HRDX I own I will never buy another Fender amp. They just cut too many corners.
This is one of the few Fender amps with an FX loop. I've always wondered if plugging an external preamp into the return bypassing the amps preamp has any damaging effect on the amp, does it?
After the Friedman amp...the boards in this Fender look even thinner🤔 I'm surprised that you would allude to doing such a thing to people you don't appreciate... You could hurt them that way... Just add urine to their Listerine... No one gets harmed😉 😎👍❤🖖
I have a Supersonic 22. I hate the way it's put together. It has to be the most unfriendly way of laying things out. I've needed to open it back up for a couple of years, but I just don't feel like it. Also, It gets quiet with EHX tubes.
I have one person I know that likes this amp and has had no issues, i know of 10 people at least that had this amp and got rid of it within 6-18months. It wasnt an amp that stayed on stages for very long it seemed. Most folks went back to their old amp (if they had a nice Tube amp already) or they purchased something else. Your not the first person nor will you be the last to mention the "unfriendly way of laying things out". What is going on with yours that you need to open it ?
@@ctcards2636 the reverb doesn't work. I've narrowed it down enough that it's the power supply to the transistor switch which allows signal into the reverb stage. It's an incorrect voltage. When I replaced the transistor, it worked, but not for long. I should probably take it to a qualified tech. I'm not sure about fixing it. I also modified the phase inverter so the PI distortion is different, but it sounds like ass. It's changing one tail resistor from about 460 ohms to about 1.2K. I need to change it back.
@@SonovaBish Stinks when ya do a mod and find out it made the amp sound worse haha. Sorry to hear your having trouble. Wish i had some magic idea to help ya. How old is the amp ?
@@SonovaBish Did they warranty the amp ? Just asking if they did, you may want to contact them. But if you have been inside the amp than i doubt they would repair it. But hey its worth a shot. Good luck and i hope you can get it up and running and undo that mod you didnt like. :-) Ive done some mods on amps that others raved about and i found that my playing style and dynamics with the pick are very unique and the mods didnt work for what I was trying to do. For others it may have, but most mods i do are to help with tube life, noise in the circuit, either adding or removing bright caps etc. But theres a lot of mods out there that dont make amps sound any better infact just as you mentioned it sounded worse. I always do a LOT of homework and ask as many questions about such a thing before i do it. I find that everyone and their brother want to have a say of how good and easy this was to do etc. But a lot of these people have no idea what they are talking about and ya gotta remember sound/tone is "subjective".

That opening thought about testing after a major step of many fits so many things! Some of us have been holding on by a few atoms for years.
I am looking forward to: "Amps Under $2,000"... and "Amps Over $2,000" videos. ( hint hint ) 😉

I know someone that does just this with theirs. It def lowers the noise floor and that hiss isnt present or at least it isnt as present.
I'm gona give that a go with mine. Thanks for the tip!
Loved the nod to Carol Burnett Lyle! Another great video.

Uhh, as usual an action packed stimulating session!! Has anyone discussed going on tone talk??? A good discussion about Vox amps would be great!!

I use one as my gigging amp and I'm really enjoying it.
Mod brand caps? I'm sure you'll let us know well they hold up.
BTW, which manufacturer (and where) makes those MOD branded electrolytics? Are they good quality stuff?
never been sure if my Pro-Tube Twin Amp is the "Evil Twin" or a completely different Twin....but think it's about time I get "IT" looked at anyway.

Nope

Unless the amp is ancient and should be kept stock, I say upgrade it.

What do you use to remove the silicone?
A razor blade.

New ones from MOD. 105 degree rated, no issues so far. CE has them.
