Guitarists of all kinds play through Fender Hot Rod Deluxe amplifiers - Rockers, pop stars, country dudes and more all agree that they deliver unmistakable Fender tone--perfect amps for crafting your own sound, and extremely responsive to your favorite stomp-box effects. The GB Hot Rod Deluxe is a 40-watt 1x12" guitar combo amp especially fine-tuned for world-famous jazz guitar virtuoso and pop artist George Benson. It has the full bottom end characteristic of 6L6 valves, and a versatile all-valve preamp--including a 12AT7 up front for cleaner tone - especially with humbucking pickups.
A 100-watt Jensen C12K speaker handles the immediacy of Benson's singing soloing style with clarity and range, and the solid-pine cabinet increases tonal resonance while reducing weight. Standard features on the GB Hot Rod Deluxe include clean and "drive/more-drive" channels, resounding Fender spring reverb, effects loop and more. Personalised exterior touches specified by Benson himself include grey-black vinyl covering, silver-strand grille cloth and a "GB" logo badge. A Road-worthy deluxe padded cover and a two-button footswitch are also included with the GB Hot Rod Deluxe. As a further option a separate matching 1x12" extension speaker cabinet adds output, fullness and greater stage coverage. (not included). Had this amp for a month, sounds fantastic, classic reverb that's perfect, and I even make use of the overdrive channel sometimes, (more suited for indie type music). I run a big pedalboard through this and it handles all my effects well...and it's usable at 'bedroom' volume as well as being able to rock the venue.
Can we talk a minute about how incredibly clean this guy plays!?!?
Sold me this amp btw.
I've played a ton of amps, but the Hot Rod Deluxe is SO hard to beat. I've owned a few and there is nothing quite like them - they have that wonderful low end and crystal clean top end, just beautiful... Great playing!
But not really good for jazz.. I had one. Not sure if this Benson one will be different as he likes his stuff kinda hot, brightand piercing to cut through and orchestra. Which results in a time I hate.
I put TAD STR 6L6's and an good AT7 in mine and it made a huge difference in over head. Fixed the volume issue for the most part. Personally I have never had any issue what so ever with mine and it is 17 years old.
Thank you so much for demoing the drive channel! Literally nobody does!
very nice playing buddy
That's my main jazz setup, a tele with a neckhumbucker plugged straight into a hot rod deluxe:) .
Skip to 4:05 for actual demo
So you can just switch the 1 12ax tube yourself to the at and achieve the same thing?
pictures or videos don't do this amp justice. in person the GB hot rod is really striking. I love how well the cleans are supported as you go up the volume dial. Great great amp.
This guy is great. He is a dyed in the wool Fender Man!! And we’ll should be with the revenue he brings into Fender! I love my Gibsons a my Gretch Thunderbird,,but if you donot have a Fender Tube. They were the first amp and the sound is unreal as always. I can’t believe the bargin for the classic Fender Tube Amps also.
I just played this amp today, and i'm impressed!
Great playing. Perfect demo for this amp.
one of the best amp I've heard from a while!!
I brought this amp . Cool review . Helped me make my mind up
Exactly. The clean channel is now like having half of a Fender Twin. The second channel is the usual Hot Rod Deluxe gain channel. A perfect combination.
Do you have one? Half twin reverb with a gain channel is what I want.
Sounds great. Thanks for the tour!
nice playing Damon.
Great playing and nice amp, but would a fender Twin with 100 watts be the same, I had one in my playing out days ,other for the 90 lbs, would never break up
but that amp is really nice
That is the cleanest neck and frets I have seen on a guitar..
I’m confused why is there one for 450 and another for 1100? Is one a tube and the other not?
better wood for the cabinet and better speaker. Great idea.
Haaaa, a good demo of the HRD, it's rare there...
I really liked the demo. The amp and guitars sound fantastic. The player is very good too, of course. The Fender Blues Deluxe is essentially the same amp and has very good cleans too.
rafasounds2010 well yeah i agree not completely but close. the fender blues deluxe has better cleans but the hot rod deluxe has higher gain and that power
Eric Bee
I think both are 40 watts
rafasounds2010 the extra gain power in the deluxe but yes both are 40 watts
I play pedal steel, too. I was considering one of these for that, ut was wondering if it would be loud enough for live application. Does your father play in a country band?
thanks for that. I've ordered an AT7 and can't wait. Any ideas on replacing all 3 AX's???
and fantastic playing too!!
so the changes are what a HD should have been all along IMHO
Can you use pedals to get drive and what not if you want it???
If you swapped out all three preamp tubes from 12AX7 to the 12AT7 ... would that work and sound cleaner at higher volumes? Would distortion stay the same?
the headroom is increased. I'm doing with mine and adding an 80w speaker as well. I'll have super cleans and then kick in with a high gain distortion pedal.
+Larzz Wright: Thank you for your reply. Please let everyone here know how your GB amp sounds after you put in 3 of the 12AT7 tubes, and what is max volume level before any breaking up. I am wondering also why you would take out the 100W speaker that gives more head room, for a 80W speaker? Once you get your amp all set up, it would be great to here a demo too. Tom in Orlando Florida
12AT7 is not a low gain preamp tube. It is a lower gain tube. eg. 12ax7 is highest rating 100%, 12at7 is something like 85%, not a big difference in gain or volume. 12AY7 is more different in tone and gain level, real dark jazz sounds work well with a NOC 12AU7.
Where does the AT7 go? I have a HRD but would love a later breakup... Help me somebody.
The AT7 goes in the V1, the first preamp tube. Basically, it is under the clean channel volume pot. I put an AT7 in my HRD a few days ago. I love it. I am getting a Weber Blue Dog alnico 100 watt hemp cone speaker for it this week. It is still being built. I love hand-made speakers.
The AT7 allows one to turn the amp up to 4-5 without barking, very good volume and full tonal spectrum becuase the volume pot is open more. The AT7 transformed the HRD into a very sweet amp for those of us who use clean tones often. I also put TS 5881 tubes in. They give me 32 watts instead of 40. Also the 5881's have a killer tone.
The AT7 change will astound you. Will cost you under 15 dollars. Switch back to 12ax7 if it doesn't work.
You can't really go by anything Benson says these days.. Hot Rods are not really good for jazz at all. I had one, ended up hating it.. Not sure if this Benson one will be different as he likes his stuff kinda hot, bright and piercing to cut through an orchestra. Which results in a tone that causes me pain. Has anyone tried this Benson version up against the regular hot rod deluxe version?
Nice runs !!!
Mark stop looking in his toilet!
I feel like a kid laughing at that but it was funny.
Is that a SD 59 in the neck?
Mah man GB:
“...Unless you WANT it”
What kind of Tele is that with a humbucker which looks like a Gibson..is that a modeed tele? Love that sound please tell me so I can get one.
thanks
It might be Fender's "Hot Rod '52 Telecaster" which they produced maybe about a decade or so ago. I don't know how long that model was in production, though.
Pickups Stratocaster CS54?
How does changing the speaker increase the headroom if the tubes are responsible for the distortion?
The speaker sensitivity can affect that, and also not sure about if this had to do with the wattage, but I swapped a 100 watt speaker for a 50 watt in a deluxe reverb and got earlier break up. So a speaker's design can definitely give you more clean headroom.
Because an inefficient speaker can cause a 100 watt amp sound like a 20 watt but an efficient speaker can turn a 20 watt amp in to a fire breathing beast
Besides, speakers might introduce overdrive on their own when pushed hard (which is not unlikely with a powerful amp like this) like the infamous Celestion ALNICO Blue overdrive
@@mattfuller4307 True !!!
To the guy saying Tele is good for Jazz, well yes no kidding. There are many Jazz greats who played Tele. Check out Buddy Guy he plays Tele and also Strat.
What kind of tubes are the power tubes?
6l6
I’ll take that tele
with what kind of strings did you played ?
Need to hear a true HOLLOWBODY with this amp to evaluate. That is WHY and WHAT
it was designed for.
Same same !
what guitar???
Sounds a bit like my Sunn Sorado.
Жора такой классный
...and this button makes it sound like a really thick blanket has been placed over the entire amplifier.....
it sounds a bit like john mayer signature two rock..
Thus proving that Teles can be great for Jazz.
That's cause of the humbucking neck, it kinda is obvious
SickMetalAddict Yeah, but that is only one component in this particular case .The Tele bridge construction, woods , scale length etc etc are still in evidence . Teles with the original single coil neck pickup can still sound authentically jazzy with correct utilisation of the guitar's tone/ volume controls , string guage played through a suitably clean, warm sounding amp .
SickMetalAddict for example: Ed bikert trio - lolipops and roses , telecaster with single coil.
+TheHumbuckerboy There's nothing more than pickups that influences tone on guitar. Swamp ash is a versatile wood and sounds great on any pickup you like. The bridge pickup construction is irrelevant because the neck pickup is used for jazz.
+SickMetalAddict look up Ted Greene
"im going to attempt to play jazz"
Nicole Fleszewski and nailed it.
He nail it ! , humbucker helps
Michelangelo - " I'm going to attempt to draw a stick figure."
hot rod 52 telecaster
fender telecaster
Can't stand Pete Wentz in the back.
Thats what his boyfriend said
Bad amp....
Is that a SD 59 in the neck?
