- ( www.TFLcar.com ) The $56,000, 400 horsepower 2020 Ford Explorer ST is as close to a hot hatch as Ford sells in America anymore, and it definitely brings the goods on performance. But how does it stand up as a complete package? Roman covers the top 10 most interesting features.

Not a big Ford guy but it's one of best looking SUV's they ever made.
This SUV is a technological & performance tour de force! Nothing comes close for the price. Its opulent, superbly built, fast & still a great daily driver / family vehicle. I test one recently an was so impressed overall. I test drove an Infinity, X5, Volvo , Chevy, JEEP Trackhawk. Explorer is best balance of all & well worth a test drive.
Agree. Surprised to see TFL shitting on such a popular vehicle. Maybe Ford dropped their sponsorship. 😂
Yes, the vertical portrait screen is terrible. However, what everyone seems to miss is that it's only included if you pay $999 for the "Premium Technology Package", which also includes the massaging seats and 14 stereo speakers instead of 12. Most people won't pay for that add-on package and will instead get the stock horizontally mounted screen, which looks much better
Ford needs to bring back the offroading specs for the Explorer, maybe a Raptor oriented version.
Agreed
Guess they don't want to build it like that anymore because of the Bronco coming back.
There gunna have the baby Bronco, bronco, raptor, and might even bring the ranger raptor to the USA so they have to much on there plate already
I seem to be in the minority but I actually really like it especially in that red it's looks amazing, minus that touch screen
James Mastroianni I’ve also seen a lot of people complain about the styling, that “it wasn’t different enough” and that the price was to high.
Nathaniel Moran infotainment screen is one thing but the infotainment system which it operates also could use a upgraded processor and graphics.
They didn’t spend much of ANY time on the exterior. It literally looks unchanged at the rear and cheap with the incandescent amber turn signals.
The digital gauge cluster also is very laggy at times and looks cheap to me in the blue default layout which Ford is beginning to put it in all of their vehicles. Not to mention the fit and finish of the interior in most places is poor...the 2020 Explorer just seems like a rushed job overall.
I agree, I like everything except the screen.
The color is Rapid red. I also like Atlas blue. I think it look more muscular and chiseled compared to the softer outgoing style.
@@nathanielmoran8537 Why change it much? The fifth gen Explorer was considered one of the best looking subs around and it still is.
Well Roman, I'd like to pull out that tablet and watch TFL Videos.
Great video Roman..Explorer looks really sharp
That center screen looks like an iPad from 2010..
1st Gen iPad ftw!
Regardless this SUV drives an rides so well it outclasses the competition. I drove Volvos, Infinity, Jeep, X5, Chevy. All nice none as well put together as this! Yes, I bought one an highly recommend. Test drive one! Easy buying All American SUVs & trucks these days ...we build em better!
David Klimmek Sorry but this doesn’t drive remotely close to the X5. The X5 is generally regarded as one of the best driving crossovers/SUVs on the market. Even my good buddy who recently purchased a 20’ Explorer ST in white with the street package agrees my X5 is so much more fun to drive. He was going to go for an X5 40i M sport but couldn’t comfortably afford it.
David Klimmek plus, the explorer ST has quite an uncomfortable ride with the sport suspension and 21’ Rims, what are you saying?
Thanks for all the left-handed compliments you gave the new Explorer. Some things never change!!
I like the idea of the large screen infotainment. But it’s integrated horribly, they need to find a sleeker way next year.
Skai R they just need to turn it sideways
Awesome video once again 😎
I have a fully loaded Black 10 speed Mustang Gt..No issues at all. I saw the Black Explorer ST coming out and after the test drive had to trade the wife's Edge Sport 2.7 twin turbo in on it. The St is very quick and nimble especially for its size. Also stops on a dime! Highly recommended!!
The lighted, integrated touch pad for coded entry has been on Explorers for several years now.
Heck, my 2000 Explorer has it (although not rad and stealthy). It's been a Ford thing for a long time, I roll my eyes when reviewers discuss it like it's new. Means "new to them" for me. 🤷🏼♂️
I was looking for my tablet for 2 weeks and this is where it ended up
The fact that Ford took the Focus and Fiesta ST's away from us and said "It's ok guys because we made you an Explorer ST" makes me really angry.
That is one impressive paint job. Love that performance red.
Love it !!!... I really have a hard time faulting this one...
Loved our 1997 explorer 5.0! We recently looked at 2014 explorers but found them cheap looking. They were comfortable up front but the third row wasn’t. Ended up buying a 2011 AWD Sienna.
Nice review
Man I loved your “very real” review of the Ford Explorer ST, SUV! It’s part of my fantasy garage combo: Mustang Shelby GT500 and Ford Explorer ST. I especially appreciated the “lack of” over-gushing for a vehicle that has its blemishes and question marks. I’m buying it and I can’t believe I actually like the red color (non cop car looking). I just wish I could control the interior color scheme. It’s fast but I’m not gonna race, I just need the “young bucks” to know what they are messing with! As for the iPad device in the center, you’re right, but I felt the same way when I first noticed it in the Tesla. Actually the Tesla was worse because it was like “George Castanza” looking into the Sun while driving! Nice work my friend.🙂
Roman, I noticed your boy on the screen on your phone! You are definitely proud of the “little” fella! I think it is awesome!!!
Nowwwww here come the criticisms!!! Dunnn dunnn dunnnnnnnnnn!
I’ze gots, none! Thanks for the fun top 10 (+1) review.
Nowwww when is this black trend going to go away?!?!?
I don’t know who approved the tablet stuck in the middle of the dash but they should be fired. Absolutely horrible design.
it seems to be the new automotive trend. I dont know why since it looks stupid and cheap. Im assuming to put it in a higher position for viewing. I still hate it.
@@BiGG_X correct I hated the idea and look of it but the functionality is better
Benjamin Mathew the tesla screen is nice but its not like the screen in this explorer, the tesla screen controlls everything
This screen is just there....
its ugly
I dont know how the volvo one looks like ill look it up later. But its just ugly....
and you know what i hate? The screen is usually low res, and the interface for the rear camera, AND the bezels are so big
Seriously an ipad 1st gen has smaller bezels wtf
They could have easily integrated it into the gauge cluster since its a screen
@Benjamin Mathew
Tesla and Volvo's screens are well integrated into the dashboard whereas the 10 inch just looks odd. You can tell its poorly designed because of how the backup camera is displayed.
I'll be honest from the pictures and video I didnt like it at first but in person and in the drivers seat it's actually nice.
Roman, the number pad has been integrated into the pillar since the 2013 explorer
InvertedAerials lol, since 2011
I used to have a 99' expedition and it had a keypad on the door
My aunt has a 2008 Ford explorer Eddie Bauer, and it has the key pad.
That is a good looking sporty SUV. Great power and decent fuel economy. I really like it.
I love that screen. I just wished it was turned horizontal. Kinda favors the navigator and aviator
Unless that camera gets upgraded and that screen pops out, they're starting to make their cars like their football team they own.
I think it's cool/interesting/fun how much Ford, Mazda and Jaguar/Landrover still look like each other.
I think the screen is implemented in a pretty modern way. It has advantages being so high up, because there is less of a distance between the screen and the road, it's safer because your eyes aren't moving a whole lot. Everyone is hating it cause it's different, however I'd imagine that it is a trend we will be seeing a lot more of in the future.
Beautiful 👍👍
That third row review was with the 2nd row seat forward. In fact the third row is very cramped in the explorer. I think you guys should’ve mentioned that!
You guys always do the slowest 0-60
Can I take the tablet off and take it in my office meetings ?
So, do those black wheels extend past the tire sidewalls so you can be more likely to inadvertently chew up the nice (expensive) wheels on a curb?
Since these are now normally rwd did they change the drivetrain from transverse to longitudinal?
I am looking at 2021 ST. Hope they fix all this stuff you speak of
FINALLY!!!! Thanks guys! Please Ike next!
I had to laugh when you said how the I pad got there I was thinking the same thing the first time I saw it.I wonder what made them do that it kills the inside of the car.
Love the shoes
Beautiful...Love it! Touch Screen Taken right out the Germans from the past five years, hate it, but love the size. Most reviews I've seen the 0-60 to be 5.2-5.3, NOT 6.5! Would love a Shelby Version to rough up the rest of the high HP Pack!
delay in the digital dash... vehicle was going faster than displayed.
Ford has options of a horizontal tablets instead of a vertical screen also the rim's are optional, the captain seats can be replaced with bench seats.
I remember seeing on a episode of Mighty Car Mods that the Focus RS has a block covering up about half of its intercooler....Ford did it for some reason I can't remember what they said tho....similar with the grill on this Explorer maybe?
Think the tailpipes might be a result of the previous gen’s issue with exhaust leaking into the cabin on the police versions. (?)
The 3.0 ecoboost is a larger version of the 2.7 ecoboost it doesn’t have exhaust manifolds it is made of compacted graphite iron and has forged internals I believe unlike the 3.5 ecoboost
I really like the ST Explorer and it’s monochromatic look. The 0-60 time probably would have been a lot better if it was done at a reasonable altitude where most of the country drives, not on top of Everest. Anyhow, I still love the vids, keep em coming.
Elevation doesn’t affect forced induction engines as much as those that are naturally aspirated.
His launch was garbage
@@jamesbellman4097 yeah for sure his launch was garbage.
#9 has a lot to do with aero. You need the top section blocked so the air flows above the hood and not get stuck.
I like ford more and more each day, It's like there is something that doesn't let me like it because of chevy, jeep, btw or whatever, but I like it.
I'll be waiting for some drag racing with this! Besides draging against some other brands, you should drag it against the standard 2.3 ecoboost and against he previous explorer generation. 😉
Drag race it against the Durango SRT
Love it
I love Ford!!!! Sporty powerful capable sleek and fun!!!!! Also that looked just like a Range side profile ...I mean Ford does have part owner ship
Cool big suv
So you can’t get the smaller screen in the ST?
My 17 escape has the digital keypad on the pillar.
I really want this model explorer just in blue or white
How long is all this tech really going to last?
I own one and it handles very well...especially in sport if you know how to drive
Wish they offered it with a bench in the 2nd row
Austin Lisowski - they do, it is just an option you have to select. On the lots around here, you see about 25% with bench seat in the 2nd row.
Yeah, my sister has a 2016 platinum, nice four seater, but fitting adults in the third row not too good.
I hate the screen ratio of the monitor on my 2021 ford explorer. I miss my rear view on my 2017 Chevy suburban😢
When are you guys gonna do what you're famous for with the 3 row SUVs? I'd like to see the Palisade/Telluride, Explorer, Traverse, Durango, Pathfinder, Pilot, Atlas, Highlander and whatever else fits in the class in a towing mpg comparison. Maybe even take the best sellers up the Ike.
Our 2013 has the b pillar hidden integrated entry. Exactly the same. Not a cool new feature
It's been a cool feature since it was introduced in 1980.
So did my 2013 Fusion, but for some reason my 2017 F150 doesn’t. Weird how it’s not in all their vehicles.
That touching keypad only looks good. But really worse than physical buttons. My wife's escape have that. Sometimes not sensitive, especially when it rains or your finger is wet. The physical buttons on my f150 is way better
It is useless, so long as you have your keys on you then you never need it. Can't lock the keys in it, and if you touch the handle it unlocks. I never go to get in my car without my keys in my pocket. Useless feature.
@@hoodman420 My Fusion has the same keypad and yes you can lock the key in the car and unlock the vehicle with the proper number sequence.
@@hoodman420 you must have push button start then yes. It is more useful if you have traditional key start. I lock my keys in the safe of my car all the time (like go to water park or Disney)😂 if you have push button keyless entry. You can lock your key in by simply remove the battery from your keys
The looks are great. The price, not so much. Ford should have allowed that tablet to be removed, or a mount where you can mount your own iPad. Nobody talks about the ridiculous auto Start/Stop feature.
Do you think that exhaust comes out the bottom to help prevent carbon monoxide from entering the vehicle like the previous Explorer?
Thats what i was thinking honestly but idk
Because they have had that problem so many times with the exporers
The car is great but there is no way I would spec it out with that vertical screen. It looks tacked on and like a complete afterthought.
they got the exterior lines dialed in. i have the 2019 and 2020 is a big improvement. but look out for the genesis gv80, awesome luxury at probably the same price
At least they finally put armrests in the second row
If you want a good 0-60 try boost starting.
This vehicle is badass
B pillar buttons not new. C'mon man... However, the most controversial thing in the video is the down turned exhaust "prevents soot". I believe the down turned exhaust helps to eliminate the carbon monixed cloud that would be stuck in the low pressure area behind the vehicle. Thus, contributing to the Explorer's exhaust issue. I'm curious if this model will have measurable readings of CO like my current Explorer does... Just curious why has TFL not done any testing or reporting on the 13-17 Explorer exhaust issues? Have I missed it?
Liked your down home practical review of what has become my truck of interest. It’s a beautiful vehicle and yes, I’d like to push it rather than pull it. My only nagging complaint is small. A choice of color for the interior. But, they are probably overprotecting the brand.
The looks have grown on me, especially red with a black grill. I couldn't afford the higher trims so that gigantic strange screen won't effect me lol. The smaller one looks more normal
I’ll take my 2019 5.7 hemi trailhawk any day, best Jeep I have ever owned and I’ve had many.
Great video as usual by the best on the tube.
If I wanted to watch Doug, I would watch Doug
So does anyone know if this st is faster or slower then the 2019 sport
Hell On wheels it’s much faster. More power and lighter.
I really hoped ford wouldve put the mustang V8 in the ST to compete with the SRT line. For doesnt believe in fun like dodge or jeep.
With a simple tune this 3.0tt will be quicker than the srt and what a 5.0 explorer would have been plus have more low end torque.
Sergey Melnik Maybe In 5 years when the warranty has run out. I wouldn’t want to void a warranty on a complicated powertrain like this one even for 500hp.
Test drive it first! I drove the 2008 Sport version with the eco-boost and it hauled a**!
Yeah I have the Jeep SRT, it would be nice to have another SUV to compare to. I like the Ford but it lacks on the HP fun factor.
Pat Mason Mason actually Ford is having a lot of problems with the direct injection motors. I have 3 friends that have the mustang and F150 that had to make a claim with ford for a new motor bc oil is getting past the rings and causing smoke out the exhaust. Check UA-cam videos on smoking eco motors. Also, sorry but JEEP SRT outperformed this explorer in every category. Even the regular 5.7 beats the explorer.
Try brake torquing it. Might get closer to 5.5
The vertical display can be changed to a horizontal 8 inch one I think
Charles Barkleyhatreley that display can’t be changed. The vertical display is an upgrade and fixed on the dash as you see it. The horizontal display comes standard and is inside the dash which would be my preference .
We have a 2020 Limited 2.3 Eco, coming off a '16 Sport 3.5 eco. The '20 is leaps and bounds ahead of the previous generation, especially with the RWD setup. The 10 spd is great, quite aggressive and the 2.3 is an animal for it's size, worlds ahead a 3.5 V6 class normally aspirated engine. Very please with the '20, the only downside is pricing is pretty steep, typical of Ford though.
It’s amazing ford nailed it
U clearly don't understand what "nailed it" means
@@james2042 ever heard of opinions?
🤣🤣👎
I think they actually used nails to build this thing. Go to flat rock and see where they are fixing these brand new vehicles under tents straight from the factory. Ford botched this rollout. I won't drop a single dime on ford. Quality is for crap. Remember the fiesta focus fiasco for which they still have numerous class action law suits pending. Ford profits, stock and quality are all in the dumps right now.
Why is a rear cargo light a big deal on a 60k vehicle?
Sweet
Like it!
This vs the durango SRT please!
Durango would probably dust it most of the dodge offerings run pretty strong
I watched a video the srt took it in a quarter mile by under a second then they tuned the explorer for like $400 or something like that and took the Durango by about the same amount of time, so they are pretty close as far as quickness
I likd the sport 2017 0r 18 19
Love it,the money to get one is a problem.
so i have no idea why ford decided when you get the tech package they turn that screen portrait... with that package it set landscape and looks much better... darn if i only i could get the upgraded speakers and active contour chairs with them messing up that display!
I wish I could afford the new explorer. It looks awesome! But that screen is just odd.
A ford i might actually like 🤔.....as im missing work tomorrow while my yukon is in the shop for a fuel pump 😁. No seriously it is i couldn't make this ish up.
don't understand aspect ratios do we ? lmao
It's pretty sleek, but that tall screen sticking up is ridiculous, ugly, and really lazy design. Enough for me to consider other options instead.
jook13 they tried to coy ram and failed miserably
It's no worse than Tesla. But it is ugly.
You aren’t forced to get the screen like that.
@@JK-yp3jz not
They do have a smaller 8" horizontal screen.... just dont buy the tech package.. mine has the smaller screen. Doesnt look dopey,
Only thing i dont like is the tailights... looks like they came off of a Chevt Cruze. Aviator tails look nicer, more built into the body. And i like a console shifter, not the rotary crap... other than thst, love the car....
Front end looks like Grimace from McDonalds if he were transformed into a car...
Pretty underwhelming review for such a cool vehicle. Not a big Ford guy but the specs of the Explorer ST are much more impressive than his uphill 0-60 run showed.
Outside looks good but that interior looks cheap. Maybe borrow some interior design from the new Aviator.
I understand that the industry is leaning towards big vertical screens, but I like the large horizontal screen in Lincoln Aviator and Navigator
I heard ford will be changing all their screens to horizontal and that they messed up on these vertical screens. The new spy shots of the new f150 show a horizontal 12.5 inch screen.
It looks like they finished the interior design and then said "Shit, we forgot the infotainment system..."
#tflnow please do a full review on the 2020 for explorer 2.3 EcoBoost 10 speed tow test highway test want to see if it's worth buying before I waste my money apparently fords making the 2.3 mustang EcoBoost motor standard to the explorer
Need to drop the 5.0 v8 400 hp in it like they had the 4.6 in the older gen getting tired of turbos
plus that 3.0L engine sounds terrible. And for how small it is, it sure should be getting better mpg. my Durango with a tuned 390hp 5.7 V8 hemi gets the same mpg if not better, I have had 25-26mpg country, and a 20-21 average. maybe 17-18 city with my Nitto grapplers G2's and plus add on that its a decade old in design, heavier and has more capability the Ford
That center tablet is the laziest and ugliest way to design a infotainment system for a car. Try to at least fit it in the dash.
I totally agree, good overall looking vehicle personal opinion.
This seems to be a trend these days. I've seen very expensive luxury cars with similar screens.
Didn't Dodge Ram integrate a huge pad into the dash?
Personally I think all this electronic stuff can be very distracting if you let it.
I am glad that Ford didn't use microwave door handles
3.0?
Why not keep the 3.5?
