  • (1988) Timothy Nolen in his debut performance as the Phantom, taking over Michael Crawford. Timothy is actually an operatic Bass-Baritone, so parts of the score, like Music of the Night, were transposed to fit his range. His portrayal of the Phantom is really one of the best. I regard him as one of the greatest Phantoms of all time.

    Did a Bass-Baritone seriously hold a G4 for 10 seconds?!?! Man, Timothy is just incredible. Truly, one of the greatest Phantoms ever!

      I read that he got screwed on how he was able to sing on the show

      Scott Hamp pretty much- they said they would lower the score for him but didn’t.

      Jay Salvoro-Patterson they actually lowered Music of the Night and Stranger than you dreamt it. MOTN here is transposed to C major here. But the rest of the score remained as is

      ThePersianTenor but like for the rest of his run, he just sang the score as is. So did he like agree to sing it in the original key for the rest of his run?

    • @FelizNAVIDad293

      Jay Salvoro-Patterson for the rest of the run, music of the night, the unmasking scene, and final scene of the final lair remained transposed down for him, but the rest of the score remained unchanged

    I was told that musical theater companies don't transpose music to fit an actor's range. If I had known they would, I would have auditioned for shows back when I was younger, say in my mid twenties

    • @phantomphan873
      @phantomphan873  5 років тому +1

      Yeah. Timothy playing the role back then was a big deal, because he was popular both in the Opera and musical world. Part of the contract was that part is the score would be transposed for him, since he is Bass-Baritone. So Timothy is one of those exceptions

      Notice although he’s a bass baritone, he holds the the “be” note for 10 seconds!!!! Plus the applause at the end, he killed it! One of the greatest

    OK after I listened to Timothy‘s phantom, I stopped listening to any other version. I am not saying that other phantoms are bad, and I still like many of those guys (such as Hugh Panaro). But Timothy’s voice is exactly what I think the phantom’s voice should be! And I do love bass baritone voice.

    He has a such a different personality in every role he plays. I mean I didn't believe that his Judge Turpin and Sweeney were done by the same person even though the voice was a giveaway.

    • @phantomphan873

      He in my opinion is the greatest Sweeney, but his Phantom performance is unsurpassable. Just listen to the applause and standing ovation he received

    Just out of curiosity, how was James Barbour and Anthony warlow (my 2 favorites ) able to do this role everyday. I know Warlow is a lyric Baritone but still in Melbourne I think he did MOTN in C major. With Mr . Barbour, how was he able to keep doing this role with his baritone (almost bass-baritone) qualities?

    • @phantomphan873
      @phantomphan873  4 роки тому

      They both did very well! Barbour in particular. He is a dramatic Baritone with a tenor range. Warlow, because of his bout with cancer, was not as strong in the 2007-2009 run as phantom as he was in the 90s. Timothy, because he is operatic trained singer, was really able to do this role and bring the house down.

  • @scotthamp384
    @scotthamp384 5 років тому +3

    Pardon my choice of words, but holy fuck! He was great. I don't think he'd be able to do LND with the higher notes, though. Not with his vocal range

    • @phantomphan873
      @phantomphan873  5 років тому

      Haha I used those choice of words too haha! 10 seconds m! Just incredible! One of the greats! He might actually do LVN in his prime! Although he is a Bass-Baritone, he can easily hit a G4 without straining. So he could have, with a bit of work and practice!

    • @scotthamp384
      @scotthamp384 5 років тому

      Well, he and the late Steve Barton both became two newest additions to my list of favorite Phantoms. Too bad Timothy's time on Broadway was short-lived. I read that the people in charge of the show were going to try to make it to where he could sing the show as a bass baritone, but then they screwed him over it

    Very choppy acting and dynamic delivery and his vocal technique and vocal acting could be healthier... but with that said, excellent job. Now if only they’d be willing to hire a contralto or mezzo-soprano to play Christine... sadly... I doubt they will but maybe one day.
