Yeah I agree with you. I have seen Ben Crawford twice as the Phantom on Broadway and he is absolutely AMAZING. He is perfect for the role. I have also watched so many videos of his Phantom on UA-cam. He is just so pure and amazing as you said. He is my favorite Phantom. I like other Phantoms as well, but Ben Crawford is number one for me, he is just so good at what he does.
Honestly, Michael Crawford had the best build up imo. He has a subtleness that draws you in, and the crescendo really nails it. Most others rely on vibrato to sell it, where he doesn't really need it to sell it, but he adds it towards the end of the note which I appreciate more than constant vibrato
I absolutely agree. Having seen him live as the Phantom on Broadway twice, plus watching a million videos of his Phantom on UA-cam, I can confidently say that Ben Crawford is my favorite Phantom. Thank you for including some of the Polish and Russian Phantoms in your list as well ❤ i have watched tons and tons of comparative videos (of different musicals) and not many people give any thought to include them, on the contrary a lot of people stop at broadway/west end and they don't go for the effort of actually presenting actors other than the well-known handfull. Cheers from Poland ❤
The ones that stood out to me the most were : - Hugh Panaro !!!!!!!! - Anthony warlo - John Owen jones - ben lewis - earl carpenter Honourable mentions: - Ramin Karimloo - Gerard butler - Alexander lewis - Ethan freeman - Jeremy stolle

As I have seen him live as the Phantom on Broadway two times. I am planning hopefully to see him again soon. But yeah, Ben Crawford is my favorite Phantom. 1:37 Aside from Michael Crawford, Franc D'Ambrosio is my favorite. Saw he and Lisa Vroman sing Phantom in a cozy little threater (Curran) in San Francisco. Absolutely amazing.
Michael Crawford, Colm Wilkinson, Howard McGillin, Hugh Panaro, Saulo Vasconcelos, Yoon Young Seok, John Owen-Jones, Juan, Carlos Barona, Ramin Karimloo, Jonathan Roxmouth, Norm Lewis, Ben Lewis, Ben Crawford, Leonardo Neiva and Gerard Butler are my favorite Phantoms of all times (sorry couldn't just pick one). I watched each performance of each Phantom, and bro. No words my love, no words. Just passion, PURE PASSION
My picks on this list - Roy Weissensteiner, Alexander Lewis, Michael Crawford, Cris Groenendaal, Mikael Samuelsson, Anthony Warlow, Alfred Pfeifer, Ian Jon Bourg, Juan Carlos Barona, Henk Poort, Yoon Young Seok, early John Owen Jones, Earl Carpenter, Zoltan Miller, Simon Pryce, James Barbour, Nicky Wuchinger, Fred Johanson, and Ben Crawford.
Ohh wow....what a great comparison! Sooooo hard picking my favs w/ all these great actors, but if I had to pick, I’d say: 1) Ian Jon Bourg 2) Howard McGillin 3) MC 4) Gary Mauer 5) Jon Roxmouth
I really like that the phantoms are so different in how they sing and play the part. It means that there's something for everyone. I think it would by kind of boring if we all liked the same couple of phantoms 😁 God thing we don't because then we wouldn't have the need for comparison videos like this 😄 My absolute favourite phantom is Swedish singer/actor/entertainer John Martin Bengtsson ☺️ In this video he's singing in Danish. He played the Phantom at Det Ny Teater (the new Theatre) in Copenhagen when the audio was recorded 🎵🙂 When he startet to sing: Insolent boy.... (in Danish of course) it felt/sounded like the entire audience stopped breathing for a moment. Goosebumps 😮 WOW!!!!
Am I wrong for liking Gerard's? There's just something to the way he hits "I am there inside!" that gives me chills every time, it's just so deep and... hollow? I think that's how I'd describe it, very resonant. I seem to gravitate more towards the deeper, older sounding Phantoms and less toward the nasally or younger sounding ones same goes for the ones where they emphasize "there", it just takes away from the fluidity of the lyric. I also like the ones where the organ plays on "I am there inside", it's a very nice touch.
I've been doing my darnest to figure out who played the Phantom the first time I got to see the play live, it was in San Francisco, I want to say I the mid to lateish 90's, like 96-98, whoever performed the phantom that day was unspeakably the best singer I have ever heard and is one of the many reasons I pursued vocals and kept my deep desire to one day fill that mask more than any dream of performing on stage
Michael Crawford, Dave Willets, Masachika Ichimura, Steve Barton, Anthony Warlow, Mark McKerracher, Brad Little, Paul Stanley, Saulo Vasconcelos, John Owen Jones, Earl Carpenter, Matthew Cammelle, Brent Barret, John Cudia, Ramin Karimloo, Damian Aleksander, David Shannon, Jonathan Roxmouth, Peter Joback, Mathias Edenborn, Dmitri Ermak, Norm Lewis, Chris Mann, Ivan Ozhogin, Nicky Wuchinger, John Martin Bengtsson, Ben Lewis, Ben Crawford and Gerard Butler Why did you include Cooper Grodin? And why not Robert Guillaume and Derrick Davis?
Michael Crawford is always the best! His higher voice has so much ring and he sings so easily compared to the others. He's also got that creep factor that's simply a must! I like the others, but technique-wise he's 100% the best, and he seems to be the only phantom that doesn't have that darker, boomier lower end
Robert Casamassa literally one of the weakest voices in this whole compilation... there were like 5 other voices with (WAY) more power AND also had a proper vibrato and technique. Butler sounds so so soooooo undeveloped in his voice.
@@brandonbenitez9746 I know this comment is from a year ago, but idc... I completely agree with you when it comes to Gerard's voice, however, there are some people who like that "untrained, raw" voice that he has... Saying that the raw less trained vocals makes him sound more emotional... I don't really agree with this pov, but it's a pov many people have, so I figured I'd at least bring it up...
@@dargelxd you’re right, but the fact he stands out as one of the only untrained singers isn’t a selling point for most of us 😅 The worst part is due to the movie so many people get exposed and think that’s how it’s supposed to sound, when videos like this show it’s supposed to be singers. How in the world could the character train Christine to be such an excellent singer and love music so much and then sing like that? It’s too out of character.
Michael Crawford will always be my absolute favorite Phantom but oh my gosh! Mikael Samuelsson sounds…ahhh!! So good, beautiful and enchanting! And James Greene sounds so beautiful too! His build up is insane! I mean all of these men sound amazing! You have to to play the Phantom but Michael Crawford, Mikael Samuelsson and James Greene are my favorites
I can't help but prefer Gerard Butler no matter what anyone says. Yes, certain parts of his performance weren't all that great but this one, in particular, is absolutely astonishing.
I should be doing homework but this is more important
I should've been reviewing for hours now but I've been caught up with these comparisons lmao

The Mikael Samuelsson one gave me goosebumps even though I dont know what language he’s singing in
He's singing it in Swedish.
Scott Davies hands down in my opinion The best Phantom ever 😍😍 4:56
Ohh wow....what a great comparison! Sooooo hard picking my favs w/ all these great actors, but if I had to pick, I’d say:
1) Ian Jon Bourg
2) Howard McGillin
3) MC
4) Gary Mauer
5) Jon Roxmouth
I really like that the phantoms are so different in how they sing and play the part. It means that there's something for everyone. I think it would by kind of boring if we all liked the same couple of phantoms 😁 God thing we don't because then we wouldn't have the need for comparison videos like this 😄
My absolute favourite phantom is Swedish singer/actor/entertainer
John Martin Bengtsson ☺️
In this video he's singing in Danish.
He played the Phantom at
Det Ny Teater (the new Theatre) in Copenhagen when the audio was recorded 🎵🙂
When he startet to sing: Insolent boy....
No, Gerard is one of my favorites, I love his style of singing and I think it especially fits the phantom. I think German is my favorite phantom
I also think Gerard was a phenom Phantom! 🎭
I love it!
Finally someone remembers Paul Stanley played the phantom
First and last are my favorite Gerard and Michael baby yes
I've been doing my darnest to figure out who played the Phantom the first time I got to see the play live, it was in San Francisco, I want to say I the mid to lateish 90's, like 96-98, whoever performed the phantom that day was unspeakably the best singer I have ever heard and is one of the many reasons I pursued vocals and kept my deep desire to one day fill that mask more than any dream of performing on stage
0:50 to 1:02 is amazing!
Colm Wilkinson is amazing!
@@joansouthernbuffalo8181 doesn't he sound like nixxon
Gotta be honest,Cris Groenendaal is phenomenal when he was phantom. Great and powerful voice he had
Ramin - you take my breath away
8:51 Gary Mauer is my favorite.
It’s funny that both brothers Alexander and Ben are in this they’re both amazing phantoms
“Insolent fools!” should’ve been the list. That phrase confirms legendary phantoms. Michael Crawford and Hugh Panaro were excellent❤
I’m not really a fan of those who had the hard pause after ‘I am there’ I like the smooth transition tbh
16:02 Gerard or Gerry Butler
Meus favoritos: Davis Gaines, Hugh Panaro, Gary Mauer, John Cudia, Ben Lewis, JOJ, Leonardo Neiva, Alexander Lewis, Ian Jon Bourg, Brad Little.
Here they are in order:
1. Ramin K.
2. Michael Crawford
3. Ethan Freeman
4. Norm Lewis
5. Colm Wilkinson
6. Gerard Butler
7.Brad Little
8.Davis Gaines
Always Ben Lewis 😍
Look at your face in the mirror,
I am there, inside.

Eiji... He is a Asian phantom!!!
Wow, I didn't know Gleason played the phantom. I remember listening to a recording with Steve Barton as the phantom and in that, Gleason was Raoul!
Michael Crawford, Dave Willets, Peter Karrie, John Owen Jones, Ramin Karimloo, Colm Wilkinson.
I was friend w.Mr. Mackintosh when I had my Facebook. Very sweet gentleman!!!!!!!
Wow you even included the today Brazilian poto!!!
Gerard Butler, definitely. You saved the best for last. Love the movie.
Michael Crawford, Dave Willets, Masachika Ichimura, Steve Barton, Anthony Warlow, Mark McKerracher, Brad Little, Paul Stanley, Saulo Vasconcelos, John Owen Jones, Earl Carpenter, Matthew Cammelle, Brent Barret, John Cudia, Ramin Karimloo, Damian Aleksander, David Shannon, Jonathan Roxmouth, Peter Joback, Mathias Edenborn, Dmitri Ermak, Norm Lewis, Chris Mann, Ivan Ozhogin, Nicky Wuchinger, John Martin Bengtsson, Ben Lewis, Ben Crawford and Gerard Butler
Why did you include Cooper Grodin?
And why not Robert Guillaume and Derrick Davis?
Hugh panaro has the coolest mask
Is there any role Anthony Warlow can't slay?
Like...
Michael Crawford is always the best! His higher voice has so much ring and he sings so easily compared to the others. He's also got that creep factor that's simply a must! I like the others, but technique-wise he's 100% the best, and he seems to be the only phantom that doesn't have that darker, boomier lower end
Ben lewis will always be my favorite!! :)
Nice vid. They are all very good.
10:17 I can't hear him singing, happens only to me? Thank you for this collection :-)
Maybe I'm bias because I heard gerard before anyone else. But I like his voice the best because my personal preference is not a lot a vabrato.
For me, I’d say it’s not so much the lack of vabrato but the undeniably powerful sound that his voice had, especially in that line
Haha I have the exact opposite preferences. :)
Anthony Warlow does Australia proud 👍
And Simon pryce aka red wiggle 😄
Where is "I am your angel of music, come to me angel of music." That's my favorite song~!
Same song
@@GavinStone91146 I know but this is a compilation of "I am there inside" from the Mirror.
@@katherinedonovan974 Ok.
gerard❤ will always be my fav
My all time favourite will always be ramin. But I saw Ben lewis onstages
I really love Mikael Samuelsson. Maybe because I'm swedish haha! But he's such a good Phantom!
1:49 4:20 4:44 5:30 12:06 13:30 14:18 16:03
Was Ramin Karimloo in this video?
9:52 here he is!!
I find it interesting how the West End Phantoms have more soulful singing voices, whereas Broadway has the more traditional operatic performers.
shoutout to tomasz stieciuk 10:40 very nice voice, sounds like a raoul phantom
Looks like Bela Lugosi at 10:44!
Oops I meant James Graeme
Hugh Panaro's version deserves more love
My favorite phantom❤
I think he wants her to look at her face in the mirror...
I think he's there inside... Im not sure tho
Just curious, was that Paul Stanley from KISS?? Lots of fantastic singing here!
Yes! He did a couple of short stints in Toronto in 1999.
12:28 Mathias Edenborn is my favorite.
Where is Ramin Karimloo?
9:52 The sound is kind of off

Tim Howar's boyish smile sent me 😖😤
15:38 for anyone asking
a lot has been said about gerard butler, but he trumps a lot of these.
Michael Crawford is still my favorite and then Gerard Butlers
These compilations always do Rick Hilsabeck so dirty.
I can't help but prefer Gerard Butler no matter what anyone says. Yes, certain parts of his performance weren't all that great but this one, in particular, is absolutely astonishing.
For me, all parts of his performance were great..
