We didn't use fountain pens in American. In fact most teachers require you write in pencil until almost high school. Also, we did have eraseble pens, but they didn't stink. I think Papermate made the original ones.
For the tension we just were forced to do more school work. We were probably welcomed physical labor instead of more book work.
We had bleachers to sit in during assemblies in the basketball gym. In highschool we would sit in the auditorium. In elementary school we just sat on the floor in the multi-purpose room and watched the assembly up on stage.

As for the face getting stuck, we were told that if we made a face at someone, and someone slapped you on your back, your face would get stuck like that. It was represented in the movie, "One Crazy Summer". Funny movie, by the way.

So my parents were weird. I grew up in canada, with 3 years in Europe in grammar school. We travelled Europe a lot. My mom convinced me that, as we drove through the alps, the sheep and cattle had legs longer on one side than the other to make it easier to go up and down the mountains. And... my dad convinced my brother that the lamp hooks in the tower ruins of Heidelberg castle were used to hang captured enemies by the thumbs so their thumbs would fall off and they couldn’t fight anymore. My brother still believes that at 70 years old.

I love these and heard all of them by my American parents. The one I remember the most was not the wind changing your face but if you made a mean face or a nasty face it could get stuck like that forever just like crossing your eyes or rolling them. The other one I was told is the only time your allowed to see Santa Claus is at the mall to take a picture. If you cause him on x-mas night he would take all your presents back or if you opened or told a sibling what they got you also lost your gifts. But maybe that was just my family. I love this because it makes me think what I would tell my kids. Will I tell them there's no Santa, Easter bunny and tooth fairy or let them think that there is. I was also told every time I went swimming to used the restroom before swimming for the fear of having the blue ring in the pool.

True story: I read an article a few years back about a man in Russia who had surgery because a tree seed had gotten into his lung and sprouted there. You know how the seed has enough nutrients for the plant to grow for a bit before it needs sunlight to make food. The doctors suspected he accidentally inhaled it while hiking. They said if it had gone to the stomach, it would have died in the stomach acid. Stomach acid is what keeps any of the things you listed from growing inside us when we eat them.

In primary school at the end of the day you used to put the chairs on the desks before going home. I used to think that was dangerous then because what if they fell on the cleaner's heads? The 'historical accident' was a little girl supposedly running back into the classroom because she'd forgotten something, but then ran into a chair which flipped upside down as she fell. She screamed, which meant when she landed on the chair, one of the legs went in her mouth and down her throat and killed her, so that's why we put the chairs on the table, so that doesn't happen. Freaked me out as a kid.

I loved this video. Just here to speak on behalf of the parents who lie. It is so SO hard to deal with the stage of child-rearing where “No; I don’t want to right now and I am allowed to make choices for myself” is not an acceptable answer. ESPECIALLY when it lines up exactly with the stage where every subject has at least four questions and they’re so curious and they’re also EXPLODING with vocabulary. Also, they’re starting to understand kidding and not kidding too. WOW it’s a lot. Anyways, if they ask me if we’re teasing, we tell them yes, they laugh and we love on. If they believe it for a little bit, it won’t hurt them. Their question was validated with an answer and their hearts were satisfied.

I was in school in the 70s and 80s, I graduated HS in 1986. I remember most of these too, except we didn't use fountain pens. I once witnessed a boy when I was in grade school tip his chair, fall a crack his head open on the floor, never tipped back again after that. I heard you'd go blind if you sat too close to the TV, and televisions way back were large tall boxes with small round screens maybe the size of a plate. My father called it the boob tube! The wind one never heard, but if you make a face it would freeze that way. The light in the car was because at night the glare from the inside light could keep you from seeing an oncoming car, my mother always yelled if someone turned on the light! I taught Pre-K for 24 years!

Apple seeds won't grow in your stomach. However, the seeds and pits of fruits in the rose family (e.g. apples, pears, peaches, cherries, etc.) contain minute amounts of arsenic. So, apple pie = good. Apple seed pie = goodbye if you eat enough of them.

I'm from the US and I thought this was absolutely hilarious to watch and I was surprised at how many were similar or the same.
    1. Pig's Wee eraser:
I have never heard of this one, but I think its really funny.
    2. Chew gum lie:
As a kid, I was told this lie, but I never really swallowed my gum anyway. Not because I thought it would stay inside me for 7 years, but because I didn't like the feeling of swallowing gum. However, my brother would swallow his gum all the time, and still does today.
    3. Don't swallow a seed or pit:
Where I live we were told that if we swallowed a black watermelon seed, we would have a giant watermelon grow inside of us.
    4. The Historical chair accident:
This one isn't a lie. I have actually witnessed this myself. Thankfully, the student didn't crack his head open. He leaned back to far on the back legs of his chair and the chair slipped out from underneath him and he fell backward and smashed his head on the floor. Teachers at my school were very strict about this and if you continued to lean back on your chair after they told you not to, they would make you stand. I didn't witness this one myself, but a teacher told us that one time when she was teaching a class, a student leaned back on their chair too far, the chair slipped out from underneath him and he hit the back of his head on the desk behind him and he DID end up cracking his head open.
    5. Square eyes from TV:
We were never told that we would have square eyes if we watched too much TV, but we were told that if we sat too close to the TV that we would ruin our vision.
    6. The wind changing lie:
I have never heard of this one.
    7. The inside car light lie:
I have heard of this one, but my parents never told us this.

On very rare occasions, large amounts of swallowed gum combined with constipation have blocked intestines in children. It's for this reason that frequent swallowing of chewing gum should be discouraged, especially in children.
I am 50 I wear glasses but I take them off to look at my phone. I can't hold it far away or I can't see it.
I was told i would need glasses if I watched TV too close
The wind thing is somewhat true, you can develop Bells Palsy from wind. I have seen patients develop Bells Palsy from riding a motorcycle. Usually its a underlying medical issue that you must have to have it happen but it could happen. I think before people know all the details of what causes some of these things they make up what causes it. Thats how old wives tales were born
