That's a great starting lens. But yeah keep the 35-150mm on your wish-list if you want to improve the quality of your image without losing to much zoom range.
Great topic! Would love to hear your thoughts on why you chose this over the new Samyang version of this lens. Also, super grateful for the information and experience you share here but was wondering if you might consider choosing a soundtrack without explicit lyrics so I can watch with my kids in the room. Thank you!
The Samyang version was not out yet when I originally purchased this lens. But it seems to basically be a cheaper version with a few things taken away.
I got that lens Oct last year. The only time it comes off my a7iv is when I really want a below 2.0 aperture or 24mm or wider shot. I haven’t use my 70-200 since I got it. Like you stated, the weight does get to you after awhile. when on sticks it’s a non-factor. The only reason it’s not on my FX3 is because I don’t want keep swapping the lens when I need to do some portraits.
I think these lenses are good! But I would rather go for the Sony 28-135 specially of it's parfocal feature, which is very important while zooming in or out, the other option but loosing a bit of quality is use a B4 lens, i adapted a B4 lens to my Sony a6400 and it works perfectly fine with a shoulder mount rig, and I can go from 22mm to 470 mm with the 2x and 1.3x of clear image zoom to avoid the vignetting, is crazy!
Great rundown, thanks man! I rented the Tamron 35-150 a week ago and found that it's not parfocal (focus gets lost a bit when zooming). However, my 70-200mm is parfocal (it maintains focus perfectly no matter how much I zoom in or out, or how quickly). Did you find the same to be true? If so, how did you work around that limitation?
@@MarkReese are you sure that it’s not simply the autofocus that is better on the 70-200mm? Because, as far as I know (I could be wrong), none of the photography lenses are parfocal. Only cinema lenses are.
@@BeyondTheGame_E - Could be. Although we say 'parfocal' refers to a lens that keeps focus when the focal length is changed, I actually don't know if the definition is based on using AF-S mode, AF-C mode, or both. Do you?
@@MarkReese A lens is actually parfocal when it can keep the focus through your focal length changes while the autofocus is OFF. That's kind of the whole point. Otherwise, all the work is done in camera and not in the lens. Again, I'm not an expert on that topic but that's my understanding.
Amazing video man. Newbie here who bought that lens for no real responsible reason. When you're shooting video of a soccer game, are you shooting at 2.8? And also, how do you set your focus? Who are you focusing and how does the focus work when you change from one player to another in a second???

After watching this video and a few others, I'm still on the fence. I've been using the Tamron 28-75mm and 70-180mm combo for about a year now, for everything from events to sports to interviews. The biggest bottleneck has been needing to switch lenses on a dime when the action moves from far away to something close, and the 70-180 just cant get wide enough. and vice versa. For that reason I'm inching closer and closer to selling both for the 35-150mm, but like he mentioned, the weight is a big concern. I already get back pain after an hour and a half of holding my rig with a 28-75mm on it. cant imagine the fatigue of this beast. Also, does anyone have experience using the 35-150mm on gimbals? There's likely no way my Weebill S can stabilize that with a A7SIII, and I'd prefer to not have to upgrade my gimbal too since I love the compact form factor of the weebill. If anyone has made the same switch and is much happier because of it regardless of those couple tradeoffs, please let me know!
Regarding the gimbal, I don't know the weight limit of this particular one but you would also need to consider extra weight at the back for better weight distribution. Otherwise the lens would probably make your rig too front heavy for a gimbal.
I think this lens isn't enough for recording soccer videos in the stadium, I've been using Sony 70-300 for a year, but I don't know if I like it. I'm hesitant to buy the Sony 70-200 f/2.8 with a 2x multiplier, so I can have two lenses or the Sigma 150-600. What do you advise me to do? I am really unsure. Thanks :)
I don't know, the Tamron 35-150mm seems fine to me so I don't think my advice would apply to your needs or preferences. But I typically shoot outdoor sports with a 70-200mm and I'm quite happy with it. I've never felt the need for a multiplier.
being a full frame lens in a apsc body (1.5x crop) you mean the baseline is 225m and not 150 m like you say on the video right ? so 225m for the footbalshot and 2x with the clear image zoom its a 550m shot correct ?
I've rented this lens from two separate places and it struggled HARD with focus breathing. Made sure to update the firmware but still no better. Missed critical shots due to this major issue. Any suggestions?
Focus breathing is very common on all photography lenses. That’s why cinema lenses are so much more expensive. Although some cameras have a focus breathing compensation feature that helps.
Great video! I hope the move went well! Howd you find only using ibis and no oss? Im tempted to get this for my fx30 and film dirt bikes. Just cautious about image stability
Well, before that I was using Tamron 28-75mm & 70-180mm lenses so it’s something I was used to. Lens stabilization is obviously great to have but it’s not a dealbreaker for me.
Yeah that's fair enough! I'm using a tamron 70-300 at the moment but haven't had a chance to shoot yet. I find the 70mm (making it 105mm) on a cropped sensor a little to close for the things I do
I bought this lens to match with my FX30 to video indoor gymnastics meets and deal with poor lighting as well as variable distances on the events. I was pretty happy with it for the first meet. Video quality was great but the low aperture is something I need to learn to play with combined with auto focus and busy backgrounds. The shallower depth of field isn't very forgiving when trying to pick your subject out with a sea of background faces and people. A monopod went a long way towards helping with the weight.
Yeah that's the type of situation where manual focus is really helpful. Or if you insist on using autofocus, you could disable face recognition, use a zone focus and keep you subject in that zone all the time.
@@BeyondTheGame_E Those are the nuances I'm trying to learn. For beam and bar the manual focus would work great. For vault and floor they are moving around enough that autofocus would still far outstrip my manual abilities, but things like zone focus, etc may be the ticket. Thanks for the suggestions.
I've been watching a lot of videos to upgrade my equipment. I'm 99% sure I'm going with the Fx30. What would you think about the FX30 and this lens filming hockey and football from the stands? I don't need to zoom in super close with either sport. I don't get paid to film either sport and only do it as a hobby and memories for my sons. So I'm trying to keep the cost down as much as possible.
I think this would be a good combo for you but I guess it depends how far the stands actually are. The front of the stands in a hockey arena should always be fine, I’m just not 100% sure about football. By the way, if you want to save money, Samyang just released a cheaper version of this lens. I have no idea how good it is but it’s cheaper and is supposed to do the same things.
All the action shots were from my FX3 full frame camera but my FX30 crop sensor camera has exactly the same stabilization technology. So if you like what you see, you can assume that the same can be done with the FX30.
Hey E! Love your videos. Question - I’m a Canon shooter and have been looking for the closest “all-in-one lens” and wanted to know your thoughts on the Canon RF 24-105 2.8. I shoot primarily basketball indoors and was hoping that the zoom range of 105 would be enough for both photos and videos in the long run, compared to a 24-70 or having to buy both a 24-70 and 70-200.
Ive never used it myself but the 24-105mm F2.8 is a great lens. It has a perfect range for filming basketball. Not sure about photos though as I’m not a photographer, I guess it depends how tight you want them to be. But yeah, I would definitely get that lens personally if I was shooting indoor sports on a Canon camera.
Well, there are a bunch of different factors but the gear you’re using is probably the best place to start. What camera and lens are you shooting with?
@@andilebekker couple things from a gear perspective. I use a full frame camera and yours has a crop sensor. Which means that mine lets a lot more light in and which ultimately gives me more dynamic range and helps make my image cleaner. I also use a lens that has a constant F2.8 aperture so I get much blurrier backgrounds than you would at F5.6 when you zoom in. Normally I’d say that adding more light will always help you but in sports we rarely get that luxury.
@BeyondTheGame_E you're awesome for taking the time to help, thank you so much! Hopefully with some more gigs, I can get a constant f/2.8 lens that I've been wanting 🙏🏼
Hey quick question! I’m using a Panasonic Lumix S5 and I was wondering what lens you recommend for filming soccer! I’m have a hard time finding some lens and I’m quite new to this so I’m not sure what I should be looking for.
I don't use Panasonic cameras so I don't know much about their lenses. But I would recommend looking for a 70-200mm lens with a fixed aperture. Or if you want something wider, maybe they have something similar to the one in this video.
The Samyang version was not out yet when I bought this lens but I think I would still buy this one. The Samyang is cheaper for a reason. They didn’t just decide to make less profit. But it’s still a great option if you can’t afford the Tamron.
@@BeyondTheGame_E If they have very similar performance and the difference is $500 more for the Tamron, but warranty is 4 years more, which would you think is the better choice?
@@software_training-ck9ng I don't know. Personally I never had to use a lens warranty so I would probably go with the cheaper option if they are the same quality.
Bro I have a question about monetisation. I see some sports channels are not monetized and some are not, why is that? The ones im referring to seem to be doing the same thing. Its odd. In both instances they both have the min subs and watch time needed for monetisation. Any thoughts??
interesting review and lens. I'm quite new to the Sony system and am confused: isn't the clear image zoom cancels face AF? also shooting sports hand held like you do here (I do the same in music shows) how to you change focus to the player with the ball having your hands not available to touch the screen? does Sony AF sports so good to tell on it's own?:)
I think you are right about face/eye detection being disabled but that's not much of an issue to be honest. I typically film with a wide focus zone and I have my thumb over the LCD screen ready to touch-focus the right player if the camera selects the wrong one. I also sometimes film in manual focus with focus assist turned on.
If I'm not mistaken, if you use APSC mode you keep all the AF settings unlike with clear image zoom, although I think clear image zoom has less noise in low light.
@@firpofutbol I have no idea, I never shoot in APS-C mode. To be honest, when filming team sports, face tracking is pretty useless in most situations anyway because there are multiple faces in your shot for the most part.
@@SketchBenjamin As far as I know (I could be wrong) but I'm pretty sure it works with all lenses. The only thing that could be affected by the lens is if you use the lens stabilization. But even that won't have a huge impact on your ability to use Catalyst browse successfully afterwards.

Do you think Sony or Sigma will ever develop a 70-200mm (FF eq.) for APS-C Sony Cameras? Fuji has a 50-140mm f2.8.... why nobody does the same for APS-C Cameras? Is this lens, the Tamron 35-150mm f2-2.8 the only alternative? Thank you in advance!!!
Sigma makes a full frame 35-150mm F2-2.8 as well. Otherwise, since full frame lenses can be used on both FF and APS-C cameras, I think it's just not worth it financially for lens companies to make two versions of the same lens. But I could be wrong.
@@BeyondTheGame_E Thank you for your answer... I've searched for the Sigma 35-150mm, but I couldn't find it, I think you meat Samyang. Anyway, maybe your are right about not being worth financially, but I still hope somebody comes out with a fixed 2.8 aperture... and a little less heavy lens 😅 Thanks again for your answer.
It’s the other way around. This lens has been out for over a year. Roughly 2 months ago, Samyang released their version which is not quite as good but also much cheaper.
Great video! Isn't the Tamron 35-150mm automatically a 53-225mm due to being filmed on your FX30 (APS-C) camera? Wouldn't the clear image zoom make it really 347mm on the far end? I was looking at this to pair with my Sony A1 for indoor basketball video and photos.
Yeah but I was really using it on my FX3. But since I film with the FX3, I was using the FX30 in those close up shots of the menu and buttons just to demonstrate.
I've never used that one specifically but I would assume that it's just like the 18-200mm but with even more zoom range. And the downsides would be the exact same that I brought up in this video about the 18-200mm.
I have the 18-300 on an A6000 that I use mainly for sports photography. It works real well, especially in bright daylight! I don't record videos too often with my a6000 but I took one of my son during a baseball game and it's crispy! Only downside is the stabilization isn't that great, especially since my lens is still new and the zoom ring is still kinda tight. So my little clip was shaky.
Cuss all you want, but the N word in your music is off limits. Not going to finish watching this video or allow UA-cam to recommend this channel in the future for that reason.
You’re entitled to your opinion but just for the sake of conversation, when you say that it is off limits for Caucasians, are you talking about Drake or about me? Because neither of us are white.
@@Kframevideo Blurred backgrounds don't come from the quality of a lens. It comes from the aperture setting and the distance between the subject and the background. So the shots that don't have a blurry background would not have one on any other lens if I used the same settings.

I don't use Panasonic cameras so I don't know much about their lenses. But I would recommend looking for a 70-200mm lens with a fixed aperture. Or if you want something wider, maybe they have something similar to the one in this video.
@@BeyondTheGame_E awesome thank you! I was leaning towards a Panasonic 70-200mm f4 O.I.S, so I think I’ll send it on that!
@@jordanschlauch3868 yeah sounds like a good choice. Especially since it has stabilization as well.
Hey E. James from Montreal. Welcome home bro😎. Montreal or Toronto? Thanks for the video.
If you're from Montreal, you should be able to tell from my accent! Or do I sound Australian now? lol
How would this lens pair up with the Sony A6400
Very well!
Can I use this with the Sony zv e10? 😬
Yes you can 👍🏽
how do you feel about the FX30 with the low light
I like it if you use it the right way. Here’s my review video ua-cam.com/video/qo85Pt-PLZs/v-deo.html
Did you consider the 35-150 from Samyang since it is cheaper as well? Or was this made before that release? Other than that, great video!
The Samyang version was not out yet when I bought this lens but I think I would still buy this one. The Samyang is cheaper for a reason. They didn’t just decide to make less profit. But it’s still a great option if you can’t afford the Tamron.
What about the Samyang AF 35-150mm lens?
This video came out before the Samyang lens did and unfortunately I still haven’t had the chance to test it.
Not sure if i Missed it, but what body are you shooting with?
Ahh FX30 👍🏻
FX3 actually.
interesting review and lens.
How is the stabilization with this lens?
Unfortunately there's no stabilization in this lens. Not much of an issue at 35mm but it makes it harder when zooming all the way to 150.
@ thanks
Great video 👍
Thanks 😊
Hi!
And what about photography?
@@dje7917 it is a photography lens so all good.
@@BeyondTheGame_E Thank you but since i just remember i'm a canon shooter .. i'm screwed
@ 🤦🏽♂️
😂
fantastic footage 🔥 anyone know if this lens has gyro data with sony catalyst browse?
Gyro data is in camera only. Never in lenses.
@@BeyondTheGame_Ethanks for the reply. Yeah totally, but it only works with certain lenses, just wondering if anyone’s verified gyro data with this
@@SketchBenjamin As far as I know (I could be wrong) but I'm pretty sure it works with all lenses. The only thing that could be affected by the lens is if you use the lens stabilization. But even that won't have a huge impact on your ability to use Catalyst browse successfully afterwards.
@@BeyondTheGame_E thanks again. I use catalyst browse a lot and it really does depend on the lens. But not to worry, great vid, thanks anyway!
I just don’t like that it doesn’t have image stabilization
Yeah it would be ideal if it was stabilized.
What tripod mount lens collar do you use?
I don’t use any.
@@BeyondTheGame_EThanks for answering my question. Do you think it needs to have a lens collar on a tripod?
I don’t use one so I would personally say no. But I’m sure it is useful.
What about photos?
What do you mean exactly? A lens pretty much looks the same and acts the same whether you're doing photos or videos.
what camera do you use to film?
A Sony FX3
@@BeyondTheGame_E I’m on a Sony a7ii currently and was thinking about going to that for the video how good is it for photos aswell
@@hainesfx It's definitely made for video first so it's more than good enough for my photo needs but it just depends on your needs and expectations.
@@BeyondTheGame_E i mostly do still photography with like cars and such, do most of my stuff in post and some sports photography but ill probably shoot video if it has to do with motion. after seeing the comparison photo wise it should be fine with the photos I take. thank you for responding btw ur a real one!
Anyway, maybe your are right about not being worth financially, but I still hope somebody comes out with a fixed 2.8 aperture... and a little less heavy lens 😅
Thanks again for your answer.
@@hackerockmedia You're totally right! I meant Samyang and not Sigma.
Do you recommend this lens fir the canon m50 mark 1
No. This lens is made for Sony so you would need an adaptor to use it.
@@BeyondTheGame_E I might actually grab the sony 18-200mm since I do most filming basketball content 🫡
@@ONLYYTURBOO you need the Canon version though. Not the Sony.
@@BeyondTheGame_E good call , so it would be the canon 18-200 mm I need to get correct
@@ONLYYTURBOO yes, assuming you have an adapter for EF lenses. The M50 has an EF-M mount and Canon lenses are EF lenses.
Is there something like this for my canon t4i
Not with these exact same specs as far as I know.
@@BeyondTheGame_E what’s the best thing you can recommend for a t4i with low aperture
I have a 28-70 , 60-300 but the aperture gets darker
@@nmztv5253 For best result in low light, you basically want a zoom lens with an F/2.8 constant aperture
Did they copy the Samyang 35-150mm? Wonder how they compete
It’s the other way around. This lens has been out for over a year. Roughly 2 months ago, Samyang released their version which is not quite as good but also much cheaper.
Great vid!
Are you selling any lenses?
Yes I already sold a few.
I need that shirt 😂
Check out the merch shelf under the video!
shaky footage makes me think it has very bad stabilization
It does not have any image stabilization.
@@BeyondTheGame_E i kinda skipped around so you may have mentioned it. It appeared very much to not have any but looked good.
I realize now that this can be confusing to people who actually pay attention! 😂 sorry!
Are you still using this lens?
Yes. It’s probably the one I use the most for sports.
What is your thought on Tamron 18-300mm for the Sony-E APSC? Good all around lens for sports videography?
I've never used that one specifically but I would assume that it's just like the 18-200mm but with even more zoom range. And the downsides would be the exact same that I brought up in this video about the 18-200mm.
I have the 18-300 on an A6000 that I use mainly for sports photography. It works real well, especially in bright daylight! I don't record videos too often with my a6000 but I took one of my son during a baseball game and it's crispy! Only downside is the stabilization isn't that great, especially since my lens is still new and the zoom ring is still kinda tight. So my little clip was shaky.
How about you start off with the price next time.
This lens works good on Sony a6000? I am basketball parents photographer wannabe 😂.
Yes, it works great with any Sony camera 👍🏽
@@BeyondTheGame_E do you has a less expensive recommendations for basketball 🏀🙃
@@sonybasketball5 Sigma makes a cheaper version of the same lens.
@@BeyondTheGame_E thanks 🙏
@@sonybasketball5 Sorry it's actually Samyang not Sigma.
Where is the bokeh on 150 mm? 🫣 its looks so poor.
I’m not sure we’re talking about the same thing but you need lights in the shot to create bokeh. There were no lights in mine I’m pretty sure.
@@BeyondTheGame_E I mean just blured background.
@@Kframevideo Blurred backgrounds don't come from the quality of a lens. It comes from the aperture setting and the distance between the subject and the background. So the shots that don't have a blurry background would not have one on any other lens if I used the same settings.
He said he was filming most of this at 2.8 or 4 with exception of the crowd shots which show plenty of bokeh, I have tons of pics with bokeh of this lens if you'd like to see examples. This may be some of the best glass in the price range tbh.
