Great video on the FX30! This camera is so much more than most people think it is.
Picked up the FX30 as a b cam to the A7iv but it turned out awesome with the 11mm 1.8
I can see from your footage that in 120fps 4k , noise is wayyyy better than in slog. Is that right ?
Sorry, I don’t understand the question. Are you comparing 4K/120 to slog? These are completely different things.
Fantastic video! Can you provide which lenses you used with the FX30 on certain shots? Close-ups vs. on-court action. I currently do photography, but am starting to do video more. I have an A9II, but am looking into investing in an A7IV, but giving pause because of how the FX30's results are. By the end of the year, I want to give each of the players for my step-daughter's varsity team a highlight reel and also a team reel for their coach.
Everyone doing this upgrade should also factor in the buget a new computer for editing and new SD cards. 4K 120p makes for BIG files. For sports I think I'd go for a pro level camcorder. Hours of continuous shooting with no risk of overheating, built-in XLR input and viewfinder, a form factor ideal for handheld work and I think I could live with 8bit if it meant smaller and more manageable files.
Hello E. I have a question. I want to buy sony camera for football videography. I have sony a6000. I want to upgrade for sony a6600 or sony fx30. Use for daylight under the sun and night game. What do you suggest?
@@BeyondTheGame_E thank you. Im trying to do some video about futbol for my kids.
Watched from begin to end and thumb up 👍 I like the way you talk. Quite real, relaxed not hyped up like other reviewers I've seen. Much helpful. Thank you for sharing !
Some sort of update to my early last year comment... since water has gone under bridges (a French saying you probably know).
All updates provided by Sony have been spot-on, and I've seen no major or minor problems to any of them after installation or during operation.
One crucial thing to note : updating a Sony camera is simple, very simple, childly simple - that's all there is to say. And this is day and night, compared to many other camera brands (and I've owned a few) and their rocket-science update procedures.
Last update has brought 4K-DCI, the "anamorphic stuff" (which lots of directors will love, logically and for good reasons), the (excellent and truly efficient) "Monitor & control" application (I love this one !).
And, as of today, the FX30 has been more than able to host and run all those add-ons, which says a lot about how R&D was run during its developpement stages. Anyone with some awareness of how microchips work and must be managed knows that if you don't plan enough, and don't give the machine enough "room" for improvements-to-come, you're very likely to find yourself stuck before the two-year limit comes (which is usely what most manufacturers consider the "good" time to start considering about a new iteration, at least in the imagery world and for cameras). And I don't see how this camera would fall short before (and even months after) this deadline.
I take my Sony RX10M4 as an exemple : after nearly 6 years of operation, it looks and runs like new but, more important, it does its job perfectly and is not outdated by any mean.
Then, I've heard that a future FX30 update (due by autumn 2024) shall bring the "(180°) shutter-angle", and a few other things too. Not bad for a sub-2000 Euro/USD camera !!!
this is definitely what ive been looking for research wise. I've been doing videography (mainly sports) the last 5 years with my phone and a Canon T3 DSLR, definitely lower level equipment
June 2024 - just got mine in the mail. My first mirrorless (video) 4k camera. Been using a canon 7dm2 for any type of video....
I’ve been using a SonyA7III for the last 2 years now.
Mainly filming sports(football/basketaball/soccer)
I want to step it up now !
Is the FX30 the right choice ?
I think it is because you get a ton of extra features and much more advanced technology. But some people might disagree since the FX30 has a cropped sensor.
@@BeyondTheGame_E ok thank you very much. I think fx30 will look crispier too !
Love it!
How would you compare FX30 vs Sony A7 III? I was wondering to go for A7 III as an upgrade to my previous one, but after this video I am back on a thinking mode :)
Some people will say that the A73 is a better camera because of its full frame sensor but I would choose the FX30 over it every time. Everything other than the sensor is pretty outdated at this point on the A73. Meanwhile the FX30 has so many top of the line features.
The FX30 has some really nice features, such as a better, slightly larger screen, the IBIS system with the active mode stabilization is really good, along with really great autofocus and the Cine EI function. If video is your main thing, the FX30would be a great choice, on the other hand for a hybrid shooter, you will want to look at another camera.
@@boomboombaby9140 well the FX3 is much more comparable to the A7S3 as they are basically the same camera inside except for the fan.
Nice video, I have been shooting in 4k 60fps with a iPhone 12 Pro…. Looking to upgrade, I have about a $2,500 budget. I’m thinking the fx30 is the best option for overall performance compared to the Z and 6400. What do you think ?
Yeah the FX30 is definitely an upgrade from the A6400. It’s also about double the price though.
@@Tuesday_Media I've never used the A74 myself but on paper I prefer the features of the FX30. But it all comes down to what you are looking for in a camera. What features are a must for you. My priorities might not be the same as yours.
@@BeyondTheGame_E thank you. I just watched a few more videos and the FX30 will be perfect for me. I am a sports videographer
FX30 owner here. What’s your take on the rolling shutter on it while filming sports?
I think it’s a none issue. You need to shake a camera pretty hard to see rolling shutter, and that goes for any camera. So, I struggle to understand how those big shakes could be useful in an edit whether there is rolling shutter or not.
Would you recommend the fx30 for handheld vlogging + cinematic travel b-roll? If so, what is the best lens in your opinion for vlogging in low light conditions? thanks a lot for your content
Yes you can vlog with this camera but it is a cropped sensor so you will need a very wide lens if you want to film yourself selfie style. Probably a 12mm or 14mm lens would be best. But then you’ll need a different lens if you want to film things from a far. The range on that one will depend on what you’re filming and from how far.
Wicked footage at the end 😮
I just ordered this. How does the in camera luts work?that would be a good video tutorial.
Once you have an SD card formatted with the camera, there should be a folder somewhere called LUT. Just put any lut you want in there from your computer and then import them on the camera through the menu.
I know this video is about the FX30. But would you recommend the FX3 for us sports videographers?
Indoor I’ll use S-Cinetone and outside I’ve stared use the default no profile. I did want to ask, using the game in this video, about how many minutes/hours do you typically record. 4K 120fps 10bit makes some large files no matter what codec you use. I now only do that during warms ups only.
each game I film in 4K/120 10-bit is usually somewhere between 100 and 200Gb depending on how much I film, which varies a lot depending on the purpose of my content.
Great video! I am fairly new to film and UA-cam. Started with iPhone and currently shoot with ZV-1 with my next goal of getting FX30 and I really appreciate you diving into the comparison of Slog3 and Cinetone. Great work and thanks again!
@@BeyondTheGame_E it is ok for what utilize it for on my channel that is automotive mainly. I have a wide angle lens from Ulanzi that helps but it is literally a stick on for $49 USD. Time to step up my game but it’s a pretty good setup that I’m able to attach ND and mist filters to. Great basketball footage by the way💪🏻
Nice on! however I belive you greatly overlooked the A7s III. Its a midle point between the A7IV and the FX3 that is worth considering IMO.
Yeah it's a great camera. I just didn't want to talk too much about the more expensive models and focus more on the difference between beginner models and the FX30.
Do you lean towards APSC lenses for the FX30 or just stick with FE lenses? Currently have a FX3 and looking to add a FX30, but worried the lenses to get me in the similar wide angle range are gonna be super pricey in FE, but APSC only lenses limiting the cross camera usability.
I personally just use my FE lenses with my FX30 as well. And if I needed a new lens I would probably get another FE so I can use it with both.
I use iphone 14 pro max to make videos of my family and trip, do you think this camera will bring any upgrade?
Is that in Australia?
Edit: Never mind. I can see that it is in Australia. Did you go to Hobart for the game?
Yes! I basically create all the videos for the JackJumpers pre-game entertainment. But I don't film that many games though. They also have their own videographer.
I have an a7iii (that got a broken mic in port) and recently got an FX30 to dabble on video with, and now my son joined a 6U football team, I've become the team cameraman, which is great, but also a new experience, so I missed some plays.
I'm also running at 4k/60 slog3 so my 128GB card can't record a whole game. Which means I just ordered some more v90 cards.
I had it on a tripod, which is great, but I then started seeing the flip out screen, while it's great, an external monitor would be awesome, and then I also struggle to get the a7iii to match footage to have it as a 2nd camera, so was using it just for photographs. Now I want a 2nd FX30 to have one at one end zone and another I can carry on the sideline, or maybe it might be more sensible to try getting my a7iii settings right. Nah, I want an FX30 with the auto handle instead!
Great video, I just subscribed. Quick Question - How did you add the cold shoe to the top of K3M to place your Rode Wireless go, just curious!
Thank you 🙏🏽 I have a small cage that goes around the audio unit and that you can attach cold shoes or other attachments to. But I was using it on the camera that was filming me so what you’re seeing is just double-sided tape. Just to be clear though, the FX3 audio handle is not the same thing as the K3M. The FX3 audio handle includes an actual handle and is much more secure because of the 2 screws on each side of the hot shoe mount. It is fragile though which is why I use the cage. But the cage wouldn’t fit on a K3M.
@@BeyondTheGame_E Thanks so much. I actually have the FX30 with the K3M handle. I just like the idea of having that cold shoe right there for my Rode Wireless go!
@@PodcastersLIVE just out of curiosity, why didn’t you get the FX30 audio handle instead of buying a K3M?
@@BeyondTheGame_E My apologies, I did. I (mis)phrased the K3M. I purchased the FX30 with the handle, it was a life saver. I previously had the K3M for my A7IV, but once I sold my A7IV to get the FX 30 (w/Handle), I returned the K3m.
I just found your channel and I'm enjoying your content. I'm just starting to produce more videos for my channels.

from 20mins on a room temp. to 1hour and 5minutes (cheap cooling fan + dummy battery paired with external source of power). Still yet to try and shoot in warmer summer days outside, but never had warnings sign coming up in real shooting cases since
You don't need to add a cheap cooling fan to the FX30. There's already an internal fan that prevents it from overheating in (pretty much) any conditions.

Hey E - I purchased your LUT pack; however, some of the files I can't import in to my FX30. Any ideas why this is? Sorry man don't how else to get a hold of you. Thx
Here's a video that explains how it's done ua-cam.com/users/shortsIxZnetl-JFs?feature=share but honestly this is not a great idea. My LUTs are creative LUTs, not utility LUTs. When you apply a LUT in camera, it will always be applied at 100% intensity. Which is what you want when applying a utility LUT to S-LOG footage. But you should never use creative LUTs at 100% intensity, it will look horrible. I personally never go over 40%.
@Beyond the Game my issue is that some of the LUTs from the pack won't import to the camera (FX30). Was able to get 5 or 6 in, the rest won't work.
@Beyond the Game maybe I misread, are you suggesting I shouldn't use the creative LUTs in lieu of utility LUTs? If so, I should use your LUTs primarily in post at lower intensity?
@@dadufal Hey man, no idea why you would have this issue since all the LUTs have been exported the same way in the same format. That being said, your last comment is exactly right. I personally use a utility LUT in camera that I then apply to my footage in post. Once everything is properly exposed, I use my creative LUTs on an adjustment layer.
Hey E, what's a good monitor that's compatible with the fx30? Was looking at freeworld lut5 and atomos shinobi, but says video input is only 4k 30p. Thx and really like your vids!
I have the Freeworld LUT5 and the Atomos Ninja V and they both work fine with my Sony FX30 camera.
@Beyond the Game is the atomos v bright enough for outdoors? LUT5 overheat? Looking to film my son's soccer games here in TX in can get quite hot 🔥. Thx
@@dadufal Atomos Ninja V is bright enough in my opinion but it's also more expensive because it's a recorder as well. I've personally never heard of any field monitors having overheating issues. I certainly never had any.
I just got my fx 30 would a 18-105 mm g master f4 do good for indoor basketball?
For this camera, what do you think its comparison to Canon is?
There isn’t really. Technically it would be somewhere between the R6 and R7 but neither of them do 4K/120. You need the Canon C70 for that, which is the Canon equivalent to the Sony FX3.
I see a lot of colour noise in many shots you showed here. And that is not ideal, especially if you take in consideration the big crop 4k 120.
The reason for that noise is the crop at 4K/120p which I address in the video.
Considering selling my a6600 to put towards one of these. My main camera right now is the Sony A7IV.
@@BeyondTheGame_E I’m rarely using my a6600 but it would be awesome to have the 10bit and 4k 120.
Can i use it in soccer game 90 mins any overheat issue
Yes it's all good. There's a fan in this camera so no overheating issues.
Hey E! Do you know if it's possible to use the clear image zoom at 120 fps?
@@Emiliano-Oseguera to be clear, I think you can but I don’t know for a fact. I never shoot in 1080p.
Looks like a movie 😭🔥
how good is this camera in poor lighting? like in shooting basketball games
Much better than a beginner camera like the A6400 or the ZV-E10 but, of course, not as good as a full frame camera. You notice noise especially at 4K/120p. Otherwise it's quite good.
@@BeyondTheGame_E thank you! i shoot with an a6400 currently so this should be a nice upgrade
What was the best way to keep things in focus. Did you feel like it was focus breathing a lot?
I use wide focus area personally. But focus breathing is not an issue at all in sports. To be honest it’s not an issue for most people using this camera. It’s only noticeable when rack focusing from one subject to another like in the movies for example. There’s way too much movement in sports for anyone to notice the focus breathing even if they were looking for it.
Sheesh should I upgrade to this or do you have something else in mind ! )2000 budget
In my opinion, with a $2,000 budget, this is it. Especially if you already have Sony lenses.
Do you ever have overheating issues when filming ?
(With any of your cameras ?)
The FX3 and the FX30 both have an internal fan that prevents any chances of overheating. You might have to use the high temperature setting when filming in hot weather but that's about it.
Hey Man..what lens U use?
Mostly these two ua-cam.com/video/omGdWeu0LLg/v-deo.htmlsi=5Eq02fJrOdbU5W4N

@@BeyondTheGame_E appreciate you, would you think 20-40mm 2.8 would be good for cinematic videography and some basketball related content and games?
@@simonplaizier9487 You'll be able to film great action shots up close. Like filming from the baseline, you'd be able to get great drives to the basket. But anything a bit further away from you, you'll have to settle for a much wider shot than you would probably like to.

which lenses were you using for this video??
Tamron 17-28mm f2.8 when vlogging and Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 when filming basketball.
In my opinion it's the best entry level film camera on the Market under 2500 yes. But if you are a hybrid shooter get the Sony a7iv, its full frame, no it doesn't shoot 4k 120, but you cannot beat the 800 3200 dual native iso 33MP sensor, and most times you don't need 120!

Merci! Le noise que tu vois dans les shadows est seulement visible à ce point là à 4K/120 à cause du extra crop. #514 👊🏽
Actually, there are more differences than just the sensor type...
FX3 has a mechanical shutter, which FX30 lacks.
AF on FX30 is more recent and offers better subject identification (so, logically, detection).
And a few other details, including one on the frontside of the camera body.
Regarding the software side of things, a probable future update should take FX3 on par with FX30 when it comes to interface, focus assist, menus architecture, etc. Let's stay tuned.
The upgrade you mentioned has been available for a while now. It was discontinued for a little bit because a lot of people were having massive problems with it but it's back now and apparently it works fine. I haven't installed it myself though.
This is excellent advice, and beautifully put together.
I know for me, the show stopper on the FX30 is the lack of a view finder. It's absolute must (again, for me). I find that shooting handheld, the best results I get (with the a7siii) is pressing the camera to my eye, and my head stabilizes and I'm able to follow the action very well. I really do envy you young fellas with great eyes that use the just the screen so well.
And, obviously the glass is going to make a HUGE difference as well for anyone wanting to upgrade the quality of their image.
When I'm using my 50-400 I like EVF shooting for stability as well. OTOH, by adding counterweights to my handle (I have 4x 200gram weights on to balance out my Shinobi + lens), it's made handholding more steady so that's something you might consider. Also, get a monitor if you haven't yet.
I've had to cut down the amount of EVF shooting I do because I was waking up the next day and not being able to move my fingers from death-gripping the camera body for several hours. Getting a handle with a record button and a sidegrip has completely gotten rid of the premature arthritis. It wasn't cheap ($200 for handles + weights) but worth it.
I use my glasses when shooting with the FX30 and have been holding it differently than a hybrid camera due to the main controls being on top. The screen is actually not bad but I would have preferred a larger one. What was a big miss for Sony is not incorporating the screen from the A7R V into the FX30. Let’s hope they will make larger screens for this in the future, incorporating the multi angle screen.
@@waynerm002 they had to keep everything the same size as the FX3 to get max usage of all previous accessories.
For sport bad colors and bad autofocus for a camera that cost 1800$. And not a great stabilization.
@@BeyondTheGame_E I don't buy a cam because it's cheap. I wait, save money and buy a cam that costs more but is of better quality. FX30 Is not good, for me. My best regards.
Low light improves in scinetone vs slog3
Nah it's the opposite. LOG always has more dynamic range than any other picture profile. That's pretty much the sole purpose of shooting in LOG mode.
@@BeyondTheGame_E Sorry I meant to say in 120fps scinetone 125-160 ISO has no noise. With no dynamic range present, Slog3 works against you. If low light, its all shadows, there is 5-7 stops of light at most! 6 of your 13 stops in Slog3 will have nothing thus noise. Of course not always, if it is daytime it might be ok. M4 is set to S&Q 100fps scinetone just in case.
Are you a francophone?
@@BeyondTheGame_E Nice! I'm originally from QC city. Stumble upon your video, just bought an fx30 as a B cam to my fx3. I exchange my a7siii for a drone, lighting equipment and an fx30! Cheers
the way y'all hype sony cameras one would think they have no faults
What are your thoughts on S-Cinetone?
S-Cine can be a bit of a trap in that it convinces people that pro-coloring doesn't have a lot of saturation when that's just one way to roll. But I also think a lot of people overhype LOG when it can be a trap in lowlight as well, so it's fine to wimp out and run S-Cine and Auto-ISO if you think things are going to be rough on your equipment and you have a lot of other -ish to worry about.
BTW, I just did my first major swimming event and there were like 12 refs and every single one of them was like "hey, how can I get out of your way even harder?" Twilight zone...
@@rl-films 😂 those are some very respectful refs! I personally stick to LOG for future proofing purposes. That way I know I’ll be able to match anything to anything or add any grade to future videos I make with the footage.
