  • Ducati's have always been known for their impressive horsepower and perfectly sculpted body lines. Something about the Italian motorcycle manufacturer seems to scream performance and will never stop turning heads or grabbing attention when brought up. Recently even their handling has been on the rise compared to the bikes we used to know. The question is ... Should I buy an older Ducati for a track bike? We decided it was time to go pick one up and see whether or not this is a good decision, and what better place to test that than the perimeter at UMC (Utah Motorsports Campus) A track full of everything from tight technical to long sweeping and of course an incredibly long straight away to test the thing that Ducati is for sure known best. Stick around and see what we came up with as far as this bike still living up to the reviews of the past when it was released!!

i have an pretty built up ducati 848 evo with bitubo front suspension, cordona qs, race ecu, complete leo vince sbk exhaust etc... and its a absolute monster for riding mountains and curvy roads.
compared to my zx10 2016 track bike the duc is way harder to ride "fast".. what stuns me still is the agility of the duc .. but i agree in therms of maitenance its not an optimal track bike.
for street use its more than 90% of the people can handle in my oppinion. i had to redo my license and according to european law i had to restrict my duc to 35kw and let me tell you on curvy black forest roads i destroy pretty much anything with no felt power. first you need to be able to drive it like its meant to be power is not everything as i blow out many 200hp bikes

From the sound of it we have quite similar opinions, it's nice to hear from someone else that also has one. I definitely agree with you that being able to ride well shows way more than how much horse power the bike has.

While i totally understand your point of view( being 1000cc riders for a long time) i have a little different options on it. For me, after doing some track days with like a 90HP-ish v2 naked the 848 evo is an excellent step up for proper track riding. The gsxr 750 would be even better but i cant stand the looks of it(i dont like japanese desing in general) so i decided to pay the infinite costs of the 848. Even so for fun rinding the power is more than enough for me, not so much in your case i suppose, wich is totally understandable.

I think the power was there, just delivered in a way that was way different than expected and that lead to the feeling of very low power. I will agree with you all day on the looks of the bike being top notch!!

Beautiful bikes and from what we hear the new ones are great! But maybe an 848 just isn't the best for a trackbike.

Not the most accurate title. Should read "*OLD* Ducati's Just Aren't Worth It" the new v4 is a masterclass in track weaponry.

We'll have to get our hands on one to test that theory I think! But I have heard great things

Its over-geared compared to other mid range, it has same gear ratio like its bigger brother with 1098 cc and the later 1198 , you can check and then you will realize that the engine its actually logging most or the rev range because of that. This 848 engine would benefit from a different pinion sprocket setup for track and then you get to see that 6th gear used , as you said, 3 mile straight and you didn't even use the 6th gear.

That clears up a lot!! I honestly didn't even think about that but it makes a lot of sense. Maybe we'll have to re-gear and see how she is after!
