  • I talk about it, and then ride it.
    My 2012 848 EVO Corse Special Edition is a very kewl bike! Like a really expensive sewing machine... that needs constant maintenance... I love it!
    In addition to the things I mention in the video, another perk of this particular bike is it's former owner went all out and fitted up the Factory Ducati Termignoni carbon fiber slip-on kit that came with a high flow air filter AND a retuned ECU. That little package was $3100 new!!! It runs WELL!
    The cost of ownership for these bikes is high in comparison to a competitive Japanese Supersport machine. I had to purchase a Ducati specific Pit Bull rear stand, along with several tools that I needed for the belt change and removal of the rear wheel and adjustment of the chain. If you aren't able to do most of the mechanical work yourself, it can get expensive quickly, but they are fun to work on.
    The cam belt swap, especially once you've already done one, is not all that hard. But you do have to remove the side fairings, the tank, seat, and some other stuff, so it takes a while, and you need to be meticulous. If you're going to give it a shot, I would suggest watching some videos and definitely purchasing a tool for holding the cams in place. One of them is a real beeyatch to work with, as it is under load...
    The adjustment technique for the belts was something new to me in the world of motorcycles, but luckily, I've been tuning stringed instruments forever, and with an app on my phone and a lavaliere mic, it was pretty straightforward. A lot like tuning guitar strings.
    Overall, this is a superb sportbike, and is easy to ride fast. The tech on this model, even though it is basically 10 years old, is equal to pretty much anything on the market right now, and the twin is just so satisfying to romp on. It makes very usable power all through the rev range, and the chassis and suspension offer a lot of feedback while still keeping both wheels in line, for the most part. It is a lively ride, though.
    My biggest gripe about this bike is actually the gearing. I don't know what circumstance could arise that this thing's 6th gear would become useful. It is geared very high. Needs about 3 teeth more on the rear sprocket. I will upgrade soon, but I'll have to swap the chain as well, because it will then need two more links to work properly.

    I purchased this bike brand new and still ride it. It's sad to realize it is now 10 years old... doesn't seem than long, it's still gorgeous and fun to ride!

      It still holds up against any of the new Supersport class bikes. Honestly, it's probably significantly faster and easier to ride than most of what's available in 2022.

    I’ve never heard of any Ducati service being $2000. I got quoted $400 for timing belts and $900 for valve service on my 95 monster, which in terms of servicing is basically a 900ss superbike without side fairings. It shouldn’t take more than 2-4 hours to do belts once you’ve done it and learned it, usually closer to 4

    • @roadraceguy
      @roadraceguy  2 роки тому +1

      There are MANY differences between a '95 monster and a 2012 848 Corse. Call any shop around Los Angeles and get your own quotes. I can assure you, they won't be $400.

    • @roadraceguy

      Well, to do it right would've required attention to be spent on the process of video as opposed to focusing 100% on the mechanical job. Since these videos are strictly for fun and have no consequence in the world, and working on a bike that I ride like this one is about as close to a life or death situation as you can imagine, I felt it more prudent to spend my cognitive equity on the task at hand. (And there are other videos of people doing the actual belt change.)

    I’m going to go look at one today or tomorrow what should I look out for

    • @roadraceguy
      @roadraceguy  3 роки тому +4

      First, a record of services, valve adjustments, and belt changes. If the owner can't produce those records, assume it hasn't had any performed. Those belts are rated to last 3 years or like 10k miles. I've heard of folks running them longer, but you do so at significant risk of ruining the engine outright.
      Rust on anything would be a bad sign. These bikes are like sewing machines when well maintained, but go to hell pretty quick when neglected outside.
      Check all fasteners and look for the odd men out. If an Allen bolt looks replaced, try to figure out why. A responsible owner will know to regularly go over them and use locktite where it needs to be.
      If it's a low mileage bike, the gas may be fouled from sitting. Smell it, and if it doesn't smell right, you'll likely have to drain the tank and maybe clean the whole system. If it's high mileage, feel the rotors for grooving, look for leaks under the engine, and make sure the clutch is working well and feels nice and positive. If it's vague, I may be nearly worn out.
      Look at the color of the brake fluid. The darker it is, the longer it's been in there. Should be a nice light yellow.
      Check the fairings for cracks around the fasteners.
      Look out for any type of weird drain plug replacement in the engine or if something like jb weld or a thick thread sealant has been used around it. Indicators of a stripped out drain hole.
      Check the cleanliness under the rear seat and also inside the left lower fairing near the shift lever. Oil residue there is a bad sign, but chain lube gunk is normal and hard to prevent.
      Check the dates on the tires. Check the dates on the tires. Check the dates on the tires...

    just cruise I'm looking at the same bike but with 16k miles on it what do you think the price should be? from a honda dealer they are asking 7k$ on a buy with cash deal

    • @roadraceguy
      @roadraceguy  4 роки тому +1

      Randy, the 848 evo is a great motorcycle, and the Corse version is just awesome! They're still faster than most 2020 600's. If you can get it for $7k, and it's in very good condition, AND HAS SERVICE RECORDS, I'd say go for it. It would be a good deal if it looks and rides like new. But these bikes demand careful maintenance to achieve longevity. If the dealer cant tell you the last time the belts were changed, then you will probably need to do that pretty much immediately. It's a job, but if you're mechanical, you can save yourself a couple G's. If the bike's condition and history is questionable, use your gut feeling.

    How often does the belt need changing on these and does anyone know how much it will cost in the UK to get it done

    • @roadraceguy
      @roadraceguy  2 роки тому

      I believe the manual says every 3 years or 10k miles. It's a job, but is mostly just time consuming. However, if you're going to do it yourself, I'd suggest getting a specialized tool for holding the cams. Getting the new belts on is kind of a pain in the ass without it. Paying a shop in the US will run from $1500-2500.
