Genuinely impressive how Blizzard out-gacha'd gacha games. Outstanding.

He keeps saying that "games don't need to last forever" but the irony of these live service games is a lot of them don't have the shelf life of regular games.

I thought the Butcher in Diablo 1 was terrifying when I was 7 years old. Diablo Immortal frightens me so much more.

This video is just telling me that no matter how cynical I am, I need to be EVEN MORE cynical. Christ. Every game with microtransactions is a bizarre asymmetric combat game of the player against the developer, with the developer doing everything within their power to manipulate and exploit the players to extract as much money from them as humanly possible with no regards to them as a person.

The "double check" thing is why I set my phone to require a fingerprint for *every single purchase*, it's a very effective psychological checkpoint that makes me rethink "do I really want to spend this money?"

That's why Elden Ring is Such an amazing game, launched almost without bugs, a long fun game without any microtransactions. And that's now a relic of golden age, when the game was made for you to have fun without hidden designs to make you miserable.

Okay I expected everything else, but the pity system being separate for the two types of legendary crests is just diabolical.

Is it time to standardize MTX terms and a P2W Rating so consumers know

I'm so glad someone else said that not every game needs to have infinite replayability. My favorite Diablo is D1 and precisely because it never feels like it overstays its welcome. A great fifteen-twenty hour game will always be much more impressive to me than needing to devote thousands.

Imagine playing Diablo II back in the year 2000, and someone tells you, "Yeah, this game will become a mafia-level addiction-casino in 20 years."

I am so glad i washed my hands of Blizzard ages ago. And the recent law suit stuff and now diablo immortal has cemented that decision for me. And whats funny is when Josh was on the episode of Allcraft with Asmon i thought to myself, "he was the smartest person there because he didnt spend a dime on Diablo Immortal"

As someone who has played mobile games since 2012, I HIGHLY doubt Blizzard spent 6 years researching how to monetize this game. The research has already been done by plenty of other mobile games. Every single monetary design choice in Diablo I have seen elsewhere. It wouldn't surprise me if these predatory practices became so ubiquitous around 2016ish that mobile game developers realized the way to get people to play their new game was to NOT have such terrible monetization design, and the game that makes me think that is Azur Lane (one that has done monetization design fairly imo). However, since Diablo is such a massive IP, they can get away with doing this unlike games with no/little IP recognition. Anyway, that's just all speculation but I'd like to think my almost 10 years of playing many different shitty mobile games gives me a decent insight into this.

The part about the psychology being used for the MTX is so true and sickening. I study psychology and I find it insulting on a personal level that people agree to help design this shit.

Gamedevs call these insidious practices "dark patterns" - searching for that can give you more insight into what to look for and how it works. GDC talks and the like :)

The best way to evade these traps: Don't engage with the game in question. You lose nothing if you don't play DI. It may be "the" new shiny thing, but if you're in the market for a new ARPG, there are enough choices out there which don't try to rob you blind and maybe prey upon your addictive behaviour. All it takes is a bit of self control.

I worked for a year in a youth centre and we offered these activities to the teens, like guitar lessons, stitching, football, going on a boat trip etc. etc. etc. Everything of it was/is paid for by the city, so there's absolutely no one forced to pay a tiny amount of anything, which is kinda important when you consider that a large part of the clientele visiting these youth centres come from families on the lower income range or the "no income" range, or even worse.
