The crowds at that time were not allowed to make noise or be disruptive during recording or they would be removed.
Ian Gillan is def one of the most talented vocalists in any genre with that incredible range. In addition to his work with DP, he sang the role of Jesus in the original recording of Andrew Lloyd Weber's rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar in 1970. The whole band are virtuosos. You guys may want to check out a track or two from Made in Japan (live), where they extend most of the tracks to showcase the instrumentation. The live version of Space Truckin has some amazing soloing
and the very best to ever play Jesus imho
@@stephaniethurmer5370 Best Jesus and Judas both, that dude was awesome. It may be a copyright thing, I've never seen any reactors react to it.
@@peterhineinlegen4672 it may be. I have only seen one person do it and that was a segment from the movie
@@peterhineinlegen4672 there is reaction to gethsemane..
@@ponytrekker8996 I'll look it up, thank you.
I believe they were on a television program with live taping, and the powers that be, told the audience to be very quite, no distractions; that is why they look like that, like zombies. lol I agree with Dee's statement they were like solo artists meshing all at once, good description. It was part of the Vietnam War Era.
I think it was the BBC. Very prim and proper even in the 70's. To be honest, I'm surprised they aired this!
This was from a Granada tv show called Doing Their Thing
True...
Loose the idiot on the left
I love seeing people's faces when Ian lets loose that scream. Child in Time is one of the greats from the '70s.The radio didn't play this because it's too long but we knew this song as it came on Deep Purple's first album after member rearrangement into what we call DP Mark 2, the line-up in the video.
Had the great pleasure of seeing them do this in San Antonio in '72, there was a dude in front of us in the first row of the balcony really getting into the ending, rocking backwards and forwards, and one minute he was there and the next, he was gone, went over the railing onto the crowd below 👇🤪🤣 Turned out he was okay 👌🤣🤣
I saw Deep Purple in 1970 in Frankfurt Germany perform the album “In Rock”. It was electrifying.
The greatest rock band ever playing arguably one of the greatest rock songs ever - the performance is good, but is topped by the Made In Japan live version, with the extended guitar solo. The story of the horror of war, and the fear of nuclear apocalypse is the inspiration behind the song, and the brilliantly choreographed, yet chaotic, ending is a frightening interpretation of that.
Agree totally. The Made in Japan version is brilliant, the extended solo by Ritchie Blackmore is insane.
I actually prefer this version to Made in Japan. The guitar solo is not quite as good but the drama of this version is better. IMO, obvs. What I really like though is how different they are, it shows how free the band were to jam and improvise, and how they could do that and remain so, so tight. Surely one of the greatest live bands of all time.
This was 1970, they were already big stars. Heavy metal was just arriving and they definitely influenced Sabbath, Judas Priest, and Zeppelin. TV audiences were usually told to sit still and hold applause until the end.
Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath were formed in 1968. Judas Priest in 1969. Zeppelin had 3 albums, Black Sabbath 2 albums out by this time. Judas Priest not till 1974.
@@ndiemer5261 Black Sabbath's first album was released 2/13/70. "Paranoid" was released later that same year. DP's first album was 1968 and produced a smash hit, "Hush". Zeppelin's first album was 1969.
@@SRG1966 So every thing I said was true
@@ndiemer5261 yes, just like me.
💜💜💜 I think I understand what Dee was driving at ... each of these musicians is so amazing that they can each do their own glorious thing without caring what the others are doing and STILL be making perfect, unified music together. This is the greatness of Deep Purple, especially live!!! 💜💜💜
You’re wrong, they absolutely do care what each other are doing, they each make space for the others to shine, and they jam effortlessly together.
Seperately each band member is a musical virtuoso. On stage, together their genius combines to produce things like this. I saw them for the first time at Knebworth in 1985
They are such professionals even when Ian Paice drops a drum stick during the 2nd vocal slot nobody notices it he just picks up the stick and carrys on playing
Unbelievable! Ian absolutely destroys any other singers! Nobody else could possibly sing this!
I understand what Dee means: it's like they are each playing a solo but they just happen to mesh perfectly! Musical virtuosity!
There is an interview with Jon Lord somewhere on this channel where he says Deep Purple were never into drugs. They were a “Pies, Pints and Practical Jokes” band!
It's just 3 chords. And one of the best groupings of virtuoso talent ever assembled. And Ian's voice.
Bit like Status Quo then. 😉
Songs and music from Deep Purple is much better than anything from Prince, I like Prince but Deep Purple is on another level.
Especially the lead singer they were anti-drug. According to what I read.
Raw Rock and Roll No auto tune just talent. This is stuff I grew up with and played to the best of my ability at the time
1969 was the turning point for British rock bands. Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Cream, Pink Floyd - the list started then and expanded as the years went on.
Any of these will lead you down an epic rabbit hole. Personally, I have seen Deep Purple live twice (Old and New versions, for fans) and they were awesome and loud as hell! lol
The crowd were told to be quiet and not to move because this was a live TV recording . . I saw them several times in the 1970s and the concerts were always wild.
The drummer, bass player, and vocalist are still with the band doing it (although his vocals aren't as dynamic). Organist Jon Lord passed a little over a decade ago, and guitarist Ritchie Blackmore left in the early 90's to pursue other projects. (edit) Oh and Dee, they've been my very favorite band since 1968.
The times I saw Deep Purple the whole band was watching Ritchie Blackmore, and that's how they got their cues.
DEEP PURPLE WAS ONE OF THE BEST !
💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
More please
Space truckin is a good start.
The crowd was like that, because this was recorded for a tv-show and they had to sit their quiet and not moving, otherwise they wouldn't have been there.
Guys, you must checkout "Space Truckin" Live from the Made in Japan album...it will bow you away! Lazy is one flat awesome song too!
The studio version is fantastic too and Ritchie Blackmore's solo on it is my favourite of any solo I have ever heard.
The studio version is the greatest song ever recorded!
Absolutely !
For sure the studio version is a better showcase for Blackmore, his lead really stretches out
Ian Gillan's incredible vocal range can be heard in "Place in Line". As usual the rest of the band members sound great.
Song is EPIC no question.. Perfect Strangers.. Strange Kinda Woman(Live).. Knocking at your Backdoor.. Lazy.. Hush.. Highway Star.. Black Night and Space Truckin.. Great band!!
I understand what Dee meant with each member concentrating on their instrument, but showing perfect timing. That Dee comes from a lot of rehearsals together. That's why live performances used to be so good.
Or as Ian Paice once said (and I'm paraphrasing) There wasn't one or two stars in the band, there were 5. There was a star on vocals, a star on bass, a star on guitar, a star on the keyboards and a star on drums.
Been one of my favorites from day 1. So many great songs from early Deep Purple
I told you chow they are the best live band ever! & they are so tight especially from 1971. Amazing 🤩
The crowd was a TV studio audience.
💜💜Jon Lord composed the 1969 Concerto for band and orchestra which I consider a masterpiece ! It isn't an easy listen for everyone , but you come real close ! I have it on CD and LP, must have listened to it 30 times , It's sounds like a symphony to me ! 💜💜
They're in a studio watching a live recording session. I'm certain the crowd was admonished to be quiet and still during the performance.
This is probably the greatest live TV rock performance by a singer and group in the history of music TV programmes EVER! 😳👏🙏
Singing live in front of an audience with no auto-tune says alot about Ian Gillan's tremendous voice. Jon Lord (rest his soul) was a master of the organ and Blackmore is a wizard on guitar...and let's not forget the excellent drumming of Ian Paice. Deep Purple were a GREAT band.
💜💜💜💜💜
lets go back in time.. book of talisman, string horn. long time. our generation is yours. enjoy it. know it. thank you,
I'm an old Deep Purple fan. Made in Japan is simply magnificent - it's live, and it's worth hearing the whole thing.
Hi Chod! Thanks for playing this, my favourite Deep Purple song. Great on record, live wow! You mention about if you were there you be dancing around and not sitting quiet and listening. It was a different generation, you'd get a few go to the front and start dancing. There'd be planty herad banging but it was like you wanted to take every note in absorb every chord, every note it was a cerebrial experience more than a physical one. We had at that time had to share our space with our parents, so we'd put on the headphones close our eyes and let the music take us on a journey. So when we went to see bands live it was the same, we wanted to absorb every note!
DP was my first concert! Blew my 17 yr old mind ❤️🔥 it was amazing but my ears buzzed for 2 day's lol at that time they were the loudest band in the US and probably anywhere!! Not many could compare. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
I understand how you feel that each person seems to be in their own world doing their own thing but together it makes for a good jam.
Another great band/song from that era is Uriah Heep: July Morning! They often forget about them, because Deep Purple, and Led Zeppelin were so fkin great, but they were excellent too.
The opening riff was taken (legally) from the band "It's A Beautiful Day" and their instrumental song "Bombay Calling", which is well worth checking out.
Well, not quite legally, Jon and Ritchie liked it so much they "borrowed" it. Instead of suing, David LaFlamme of IABD ""borrowed" from their song "Hard Road", and they all called it good.
I told them the same thing glad there is others that know, I also liked White Bird I learned they were the last ones out at Woodstock lost in a coin flip
@@davidmooney2512 IABD's first album has been on my playlist for 40+ years now. Love it.
Yes , Deep Purple is one of the greatest rock bands ever. I urge you to review the live album titled "Made in Japan ". Of particular note is the song Space Truckin. It also features one of the best drum solos ever performed. It's a double live album and it awesome cover to cover. This is one you definitely want to have in your collection of music.
Great album.
@bob hope ¿Top? ¡Let's stop fanaticism, please!... It clouds "the senses". In any case, complete your idea with the phrase "IN MY HUMBLE OPINION". ¿Okay, sir?
@@riccardoriva6183 Who the hell are you to be telling others how they should express themselves ? You don't have any authority over that. You liberal Democrats need to stop that crap.
The greatest
DEEP PURPLE, "CHILD IN TIME". Singer Ian Gillan had such a great vocal range. Give a listen too the original Jesus Christ Supestar. Ian played the part of Jesus. As you will see he needed that vocal range especially in the song, "I ONLY WANT TOO SAY" (GETHSEMANE). Matched vocally by Actor/ Singer Ted Neely in the Movie Jesus Christ Supestar. Both are worth the time and effort.
Hey Dee i got what you meant. As a band playing they were playing as one! Chod should know when you're in a band doing a show, and everyone is clicking on all cylinders it is effortless because the band is all on one page! You did good Dee!!
Dee was actually on to something with her observation. This great assemblage of musicians defined progressive rock. Like a quintessential jazz performance, each musician can seem to be lost in 3,4 or 6 note progressions but on every 12th note they mesh with machine-like precision. Throw in a classically-trained singer and you have a band without limits.
What’s to say? An iconic song by an iconic band. The Live in Japan album is 🔥. Nice to see Dee expanding her musical horizons. 💜💜💜💜
*Deep Purple is the best band in the world... The best on Planet Earth and in the whole universe!!!!* ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Síiii!!!! 💜💜💜💜💜
Rumor was they stopped doing this song in concert because it really hurt Ian Gillan's voice. Next up should be "Flight of the Rat". Same album. You will love it.
It was actually one of the big reasons why Ian Gillan left the band!!!
The information that I have seen is that Ian repeatedly asked Richie Blackmore not to play this song so much live!! But Blackmore ignored his requests and sandbagged him more than once on stage by starting to play this song without Ian knowing they were going to do it!! Blackmore definitely had a reputation of being somewhat of an asshole!!
One of the GREAT super groups in rock history. The album Machine Head is in my all time top 10. Try the original recording of Jesus Christ Superstar if you love that voice. Trust me, a GREAT rock musical. Ian Gillan was tremendous in that recording.
💜💜💜
SINCE IT SOUNDS LIKE WE HAVE FOUND A NEW DEEP PURPLE FAN IN DEE, LET ME SUGGEST THAT YOU LISTEN TO THE LIVE ALBUM "MADE IN JAPAN" WHICH IS ONE OF MY PERSONAL FAVORITES AND I'VE BEEN LISTENING TO DEEP PURPLE SINCE THE EARLY 70S!!!
THE REACTION OF THE SCREAMS GOING RIGHT TO YOUR SOUL IS PRETTY MUCH WHAT THEY WERE TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH, I BELIEVE!! THIS WAS A VIETNAM ERA ANTI WAR SONG, AND THE SCREAMS WERE MEANT AS SCREAMS OF AGONY AND PAIN!!
Love it. "Jon Lord, lord Jesus ..." great you felt it. Fun you reacted to the live version, see Gillan doing it live, no fancy modern ear pieces, etc. And you're a drummer, it seems like lots of drummers love Ian Paice. I don't know anything about technical drumming, maybe some reaction you could explain why drummers love Ian Paice so much. He never got the the love like Bonham & Moon did. Maybe you did in other reactions already.
In Rock: Pioneer album.
machine head & Burn are also epics, but this one inspire everyone
You made my day by saying I love deep purple SO DO I I've been listening to them since the 70s
Wilburn, your obvious love for the keys should have you explore your talents on it. Better yet, get your father to teach you. Great opportunity to bond together even more. Advice from a music lover and person with one parent passed. ❤️
This is a song (and performance) that takes your breath away... you almost stop breathing when Ian is reaching those high notes. It's not a scream, it's a passionate, plaintive wail of anguish. The brilliance of this song, and the immense talent behind its delivery, cannot be understated.
This is one of my all time favorites. Ian Gillan’s voice is like no other…bar none.
You guys are so right. I've been a fan since Machine Head came out in the early 70's.💜💜
Очень позитивные ребята, парень такой эмоциональный, девушка сдержанна, приятно смотреть.❤
The studio version is the greatest song ever recorded!
Blowing your mind had a different meaning back then. It was a result of astonishment
I get what she meant by them being individually in bubbles. When a musician is so into his expression the world disappears and it’s just the artist and the instrument! Of course along with the rest of the band.
Great reaction Chod and Dee. You guys are fun to watch.
Great song from the Purple. I was lucky to see them live around this time (72-73?). Believe me, the crowd was not as subdued as this. Perhaps because they were being filmed inside they were told not to get wild! I also have Deep Purple on my gym playlist, along with Humble Pie "Live at Winterland", Rolling Stones, Canned Heat, and a recent discovery - Atomic Rooster. Have to have hard driving music to kick butt on the elliptical!!
How about some more Pie for Dee - "I Don't Need No Dr" from the live Fillmore album ??
8 years after the Mayall/Korner Projects, British Rock at its Peak!
Deep Purple’s vinyl LP Fireball was one of the first hard rock albums I bought back in 1972. Their guitarist at that time, Ritchie Blackmore, was and still is a guitar god. He’s still active today with his own band Blackmore’s Night.
Brother, I respect the fact that you dig this song from a long forgotten era, and you get excited about every little bit of it as well.
You can't put much more passion and emotion into a song than that!!!
Be fun to see Chod try to play the drum / cymbals of this :)
They were jamming!!!!!!!!!!
This was 50 years ago, No-one had ever heard anything like this, they were stunned... as I was the first time I heard it!
Since I'm among fellow Deep Purple fans...
*My Deep Purple story*
It was the summer of 1989 and I was 13. My friends were all into the big 80s pop, hair metal, etc., so I was into that scene, too. I didn't know I had a choice. I didn't know what else existed, to be honest.
One day, my ex-stepfather (who was only very briefly in my life) was doing something in the garage, jamming to some music. Bored, I wandered in and asked what band he was listening to. He was incredulous that I was unfamiliar with the song that was playing. So, he sat me down on the concrete garage floor (felt cool on a hot day), put gigantic headphones over my ears and fired up his 8-track player.
From the opening second of Deep Purple's _Burn,_ I was hooked. Out poured the most powerful, transformative sounds I'd ever heard. The experience literally transfixed me. I had never heard anything like it, and it was magical.
I ended up listening to the entire 8-track in one session, without ever getting up from that concrete floor. Through every lineup and stylistic change, I've been happily hooked on Deep Purple ever since.
It may seem like the crowd weren't interested but back then in that part of the 60s, it was actually proper not to react, but instead intently listen and study the music. It showed a sign of respect and attention to the artists work from the crowd. Maybe in those studios dancing and toouch moments or distraction was even forbidden as it drew attention away from the artist. ;)
It was just a phase and hype at the time....
Just another tune to show that DEEP PURPLE was the greatest hard rock band ever !!!! Glad you finally turned your wife on to some !! Since you are replaying some tunes for your wife , she needs some TOMMY BOLIN , SAVANNAH WOMAN !!!
Love Tommy Bolin both solo lps. Even got his box set. Let's be honest not on this level of this greatness. I seen him in Purple not up to par drugs. Love come taste the band. RIP Tommy Bolin
The crowd’s reaction remember, this was in 1970 and it was pretty new to them, the hard rock genre.
My favorite band of all time
Five of the greatest musicians ever
The Master on Vocals Ian Gillian
Guitarist Extrordinare Ritchie Blackmore one of the all time greatest.
Bass Supreme Roger Glover
Drum Genius Ian Paice #4 all time on my list
And The one and only God on Keys The late Jon Lord. #1 greatest on my list
I got a fan of Deep Purple just bc of this song and a few months, I was just 14 years, after dropping out in 1970, I was watching Deep Purple live, was my first Rock concert ever.....was awesome and they of course played Child in time.
The crowed had never heard anything like this before and did know know how to react. This was cutting edge back in the early 1070's
I think what is unique is that all of the members of Deep Purple are virtuoso performers in their own right, so it is more like having 5 feature performers who somehow are perfectly in sinc with each other at the same time.
У парня правильные эмоции от этой шедевральной композиции, голос Гиллана завораживающий, виртузная игра Лорда, Блэкмора и Пейджа всё вместе они создают музыкальную магию.
Deep Purple in Rock is a classic album. 1970 without auto-tune!
This is , for me, the best song ever maked...it is it back then ...and still are. Amazing tune and an amazing band.
Other notable bands with great keyboardists. "Pink Floyd", "Emerson, Lake, and Palmer", "Sugarloaf", "The Guess Who", "The Doors", and "Santana" to mention a few. Ian Paice was still playing "Ludwig" at the time as well. I have never owned any other brand. His " Made in Japan" solo is till iconic.
Saw Purple several times in the seventies. Fantastic shows. We were all high but we weren’t sitting on our butts. We were standing on our seats going crazy. All five members were at the top of their game. Check out the live version of “Lazy” from the Made in Japan album. Ian Gillian is one of my two favorite vocalists. The other is Steve Marriott of Humble Pie. Another singer with great pipes.
Back in the day when any band was taping for TV the audiences were asked to sit and be quiet. It was the norm back then.
Amazing masterpiece from the summer of my years.
Hi Chod. I think this has been explained before but the reason the audience is so quiet is because the performance was being filmed for a tv show and the show's producer would have told the audience not to react until the end of the song so the viewers at home could appreciate it fully. If the audience had made too much noise the band would have to start again from the beginning and this would have ruined the vibe 😉😊
One of my favorite Deep Purple songs and War protest songs
Loved your enthusiastic reaction. Young folk need to hear Deep Purple, Queen, Led Zeppellin, Aerosmith, Radiohead, Black Sabbath......
First record I ever bought was Black Knight by Deep Purple. Even all these years later, "Child in Time" is in my Top 5 songs. I have a couple of Hua Chenyu songs up there too ("Dust in the Fireworks" and "Fake Monk"), as well as Forestella's "Je suis Malade", and... Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody (Forestella's live version of that will blow your mind). 😂 Eclectic doesn't even begin to cover my music choices. 😂
The reason why the crowd sat there quiet is because they were told to by the studio. This was a live recording and the studio didn't want any crowd noise in it...but how lucky were they that they got to WATCH THIS?? :)
My era! 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
The original version is on a great album called 'It's A Beautiful Day' by a band of the same name
The song 'Child in Time' was part a live TV performance in 1970...love Ian Gillan...unlike some, I loved his performance with Black Sabbath on the album 'Born Again' (after Ronnie Dio left the band)...it's pretty insane.

My generation (I'm 68) is now that "child in time." We didn't really realize the greatness we were witnessing...we wuz JUST ROCKIN!!!!!
💜💜💜💜
You need to check out where they come up with this song from they exchange music with a group named It's "A Beautiful Day" song Bombay Calling, you will be shocked
Love hearing reactions to bands I was into in my teens,
OMG y'all just keep bringing the jams!!! I love how you were both feeling it differently on the crowd reaction and which kind of fan you would be if you were there. Amazing jams. Jon Lord was such a virtuoso on the keyboards/organ. So lucky to have seen them in 1984 on the Perfect Strangers Tour with this same classic lineup. They really brought it that night! Great reactions as always!!!
The crowd reminds me of those from The Old Grey Whistle Test. Watching Lynyrd Skynyrd's performance there, and I was like "Are these people even alive???" How the hell do you sit still during THAT?
There' a reason that Jon Lord is legendary as a keyboardist- this is just one of many examples, right here.
This was a recording
The crowd was asked to be Quite!!
