I really wish that Nicole Kidman had gotten an Oscar nomination for this movie. This mother embodies how I wish every mother would treat her son, if he came out as gay. Doing whatever it takes to show that she still loves him and would do anything to protect him. And she plays that arc perfectly.
Something that is also very twisted is that the conselour still tries to act professional and follows his training. He actually believes what he is preaching.

I recently watched this. I was in tears. I came out of a Fundamentalist church that believed in this kind of "treatment." Thank God no one found out I was gay when I was a Baptist. I knew one closeted guy in that church (I had a crush on him and he on me) but he's married to a woman now and still closeted. Thank God I was able to escape. I'm still an ardent Christian (I'm Roman Catholic now; I wouldn't give up Christ for anything), but I'm open now and I have a boyfriend (kind of like science and religion, the two *can* be reconciled). I couldn't be happier and more blessed. I pray God helps the young men who are trapped in these cults. It's so heartbreaking 😢

This was a hard scene to watch. I have PTSD to things completely unrelated, but I can honestly say that the feeling of being trapped was very triggering for me. I had to stop it several times to just breathe. I am ok, and they really conveyed the feeling of being trapped. Wow, good work to all of the actors and director! It seemed so real.
Dissecting that mans actions shows just how disturbing it is. He does t stop that guy from manhandling him out of a sense of decency, he knows they can’t risk attention from a case of staff assaulting people. He tried his best to get him into a position where they could calmly put their hands on his shoulders, a way to restrain him that they can pass off. And when he’s at the door, he tries his best to make her go away, knowing that once she does he’ll have no way to leave and that they can stop him from doing this again. He speaks calmly and tries to sound reasonable, but he only sirects that to the person he thinks matters. He acts like he’s completely open to talking, but as soon as the mother turns up, the only thing he says to him is sit down while he lies through his teeth. He tries as hard as he can to maintain a position of power, but once he’s out the door you can see how defeated he is, knowing that all he can do is make excuses. He keeps trying to have a conversation as a way to stop them without making it clear he’s doing that. He’s claims he’s not stopping him from leaving, he’s just “explaining the situation” and not allowing them to leave in the meantime.he just drags his feet since things are exactly how he wants them and as long as he can delay them taking action there’s a chance things will go his way. He’s careful to push the legal limits of what he’s allowed to do with a series of intimidating behaviour and shows of power. The most telling part is him saying “I don’t want you to leave” as though that were in any way a valid point. He claims they’re not being trapped or kept against their will, but he locks the doors, won’t let them contact the outside and won’t let them leave voluntarily. Deep down, he wants this to be a prison and he treats it as such, he’s just cautious about how much of that people see
I wish they had kept in part right after this where she yells "Shame on you! And shame on me, too". That's when she realizes that even though she wanted the best for her son, she had allowed other people to hurt him.
Watched this movie back in February. It was horrifying to know that these things still happen. It broke my heart. It showed the raw horrors of gay conversion therapy.

This is still one of the most heart wrenching, stomach turning, emotional movies I’ve ever watched. It hits too close to home, and it is a beautiful watch.
It’s pretty astonishing that he’s so forgiving towards his mom. So the leader of this program has a husband and a life now. Which is great. An authentic life where you can be happy and open about yourself is so, so wonderful, and I'm grateful for it every day. However: I feel some conflict in regards to this man. And I know he was as much a victim as the precious young lives under his quote/unquote "care", forced to repress, hide and deny himself for most of his life because of damaging social "norms", and I want to feel compassion for him just as I wish more people in my life had it for me. It's just hard for me to want to be happy for someone when they stripped away every bit of possible happiness and light from children and turned them into fickle, lifeless people full of dread, despair, shame and self-destructive tendencies. Especially when that last thing consumed and took away any light they might've given to the world forever. And instead, he now has the life these boys should've and could've had if it weren't for him.

However: I feel some conflict in regards to this man. And I know he was as much a victim as the precious young lives under his quote/unquote "care", forced to repress, hide and deny himself for most of his life because of damaging social "norms", and I want to feel compassion for him just as I wish more people in my life had it for me. It's just hard for me to want to be happy for someone when they stripped away every bit of possible happiness and light from children and turned them into fickle, lifeless people full of dread, despair, shame and self-destructive tendencies. Especially when that last thing consumed and took away any light they might've given to the world forever. And instead, he now has the life these boys should've and could've had if it weren't for him.
Maybe there should be a sequel to this movie about him

On behalf.of Christian's, I apologize. I am autistic and someone tried to lay hands on me to pray for a cure. I jerked away and told them not to touch me and by praying for a cure, they are telling God he made a mistake. He makes no mistakes. Just like with these poor people. This is barbaric and a disgrace to the teachings christ.
