My mother adored Sandler & Young. I knew them all too well. We had probably more of their albums than anyone else in the world. Levy and Short are geniuses.
Agreed. Carson was a distant second. Always heard Johnny was seriously jealous & petty towards Sammy. Sam was always the bigger man of the two as he never gave in to the barbs. Don't even get me started on the William B/Ed feud. That was plain ugly.
I love it how John Candy is playing Luciano Pavarotti imitating William B (another Candy character). "The laugh...the heeheehee". So funny. This was one of my fav SCTV moments, as was the episode where William B is hosting his own show.
Sandler and Young sold millions of records, countless guest appearances on popular music shows and had a huge fan base. Tony Sandler performed for 60 years. It was a clean act with good entertainment. Tony is now 89 years old and enjoys a devoted following still though not performing. He speaks and sings in five languages. Both men treated their fans with class and style. All appearances I saw were well attended with enthusiastic applause.
@@nolagospeltracts8264 I was in Branson Missouri and saw Sandler and Young at the Jimmy Cracked Corn Pavilion. It was there special "Tribute to the 1970's" show. It was really great and the $25.00 cover charge and 2 drink minimum was worth every penny. They sang "Ladies of the Night," "Will You Respect Me in the Morning," "I'll be Pleasuring You Tonight," "She Needs It," "She's Hurting for a Squirting," "Honey Buns," "Coming Home," "She Does It," "Sinking My Bone," "Gusher in Her Gash," "Sleeping With Sally," "Take All of My Load," "Stroke Me Gently," and "A Handful of Love." I'm planning to Attend their 4th of July Show in September.
Sandler and Young - Eugene Levy and Martin Short, what a great duo. And the incomparable John Candy. I used to watch SCTV late at night on Sunday mornings at 1AM to 2:30AM in the late 70s - before DVR and we didn't even have a VCR yet back then.
This is funny because I've never heard of Sandler and Young in my entire life and I am 46 years old and love old movies and tv etc. lol I had to go look them up and wow....I didn't miss anything.
@@WytZox1 My late mother was a devoted viewer of Mike Douglas's show, and I remember fragments of it when it was on the air, from when I was a young boy (I'm from mid-'72), but I have no conscious familiarity with Sandler & Young. @@MokkaMatti ~> After Ralph Young retired Tony Sandler performed solo doing Maurice Chevalier tributes as part of his act. BUT Sandler & Young did great harmony together in their era. ☺
Sandler and Young impression funny, but more hilarious when originally aired when irony was not an everyday thing. Eugene and Marty really captured the essence of those guys. Very strange, but great. You have to be old enough to appreciate this. Kinda difficult to have William B. when he was playing Luciano.
So I pull this giant wedge of Jarlsberg cheese out of the fridge. I immediately go into Luciano mode. My cheese. All mine. I don't care if it's the size of a suitcase. You can't have any. Thank you John Candy for that. I wouldn't have it any other way.
Sandler and Young, I never could understand why they existed. They'd do the talk show and variety show circuits, I guess they did shows in Vegas, but I could never figure out who on earth enjoyed watching them. This was a great portrayal of them. One of the quirky things about SCTV is that they would go to the trouble to do a sendup of a marginal act like Sandler and Young.

"Sure William B was dragging down the ratings but that doesn't matter he was a good guy" The William B Williams and Sandler and Young Show - Thursdays at 9
I soooo miss shows like this that relied on good writing and funny characters rather than filth and "We're better than everyone who doesn't agree with us" put-downs that masquerade as comedy.
OMG! This comment and it’s quote absolutely nailed it! Thank you for calling out the current culture so perfectly. Hooray SCTV, their entire cast and for owg59!
I'll bet they based their Sandler and Young Impression off of the Ed Sullivan appearance: Sandler & Young "Put On A Happy Face, The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy), Frère & more"
Lol! Looks like they should've been better prepared and had that stage floor reinforced for Luciano! John's Pavarotti impersonation is/was magnificent! His lip-synching to Pavarotti's vocal was spot-on,almost perfect!
I couldn't remember the names of these guys who used to come on the Ed Sullivan Show and sing 2 songs at once. Nobody knew what I was talking about! But it was these guys. Who else remembers? (Also Jack Douglas and Reiko - cringe!)

twothreebravo I was just about to say that was one of my favorite sketches from this show, and I've seen versions of it with and without a famous Disney song (I'm not even going to try to spell it.) Licensing is a pain in the arse.
I must remember Sandler and Young from Mike Douglas or Merv Griffin's shows, based on details of their appearances. The scant applause offered in this scene is such a great and subtle aspect of their sarcasm. "Yes, Giorgio" lost $45 million and that is a box office BOMB!
Maudlin: ''Why don't you just leave?'' Young; ''We get that all the time.'' Brilliant. I'm old enough to have seen the real Sandler and Young on the Sullivan show numerous times. They were incredibly bland and boring and I never understood why Ed booked them. Maybe they appealed to old folks. Ed tried to please everyone.
