Canadian proud here, of John Candy (and rest of SCTV!). The snippet about the photos being stored in John Candy's closet made me a bit teary for some reason. Very nice story, Conan.
John Candy…. One of our own Canadians bigger than life. We miss him so much since he departed. What a Canadian jewel of comedy that crossed over many barriers and territories… Peace.
In 1984 Conan would have been around 21 YO, while Candy, born Oct. 1950, around 33. Candy died in March of 1994 at the age of 43. You've got to give Conan a lot of credit for having, even back in 1984, the gumption to invite John Candy to the College. By 1984 Candy had already been on TV and in some movies including Stripes and Splash.
It's HARVARD not a Community College in Pittsfield. Of course he visited the home of the Lampoon. "I can't believe he took that job at Berkshire Hathaway. What a risk taker."
John Candy was such a screen presence, loved his movies growing up,you always knew it was going to be fun with him in it,Planes Trains n automobiles is such a classic,I'm enjoying Steve Martin in only murders in the building, wish John Candy was still with us,he gave me so many laughs.
Candy was an amazing comedian. He delivers several lines in planes, trains, automobiles that are quite long for comedy, but he just aces them while making you empathize with his character.
I'm Canadian and I really don't think you can be more proud of anyone representing the fabric of our Country than John Candy. He is dearly missed, everyone loved John Candy which is all you really need to know!!
R.I.P. Mr. Candy, you are one of my favorite all time actors and "Planes, Trains & Automobiles" one of my favorite all time movies. You left us far too soon and the world is a duller place for it.
Conan talking about John Candy, someone as decent, kind, generous and genuine as he is. Their traits, nature and character are a rarity in that industry and every other industry...
I watch Planes trains and automobiles religiously from November 1st through Thanksgiving.. Mr Candy is just so naturally funny.. such a treasure.. Rip Mr Candy..
Love Candy. Love Conan. I actually see Conan O’Brien as one of the bravest comedic talents in the last 30 years. Not reckless, but bold and daring. Huge impact, incredible legacy.
SCTV had a stacked lineup. John Candy, Eugene Levy, Martin Short, Rick Moranis, Catherine O'hara, Dave Thomas, Andrea Martin, Harold Ramis, joe Flaherty
When I was in my teens I would watch SCTV probably more than SNL..the cast and sketches were so funny..that and Monty Python's Flying Circus..I was hooked.
John Candy seriously hit Conan with the “do or do not, there is no try”. Edit: Goddamn, that was Conan’s Luke Skywalker moment, John Candy is Conan’s Yoda.
People say that you shouldn’t meet your idols or people you consider to be legends, as you’ll very likely be disappointed. Somehow, after years of listening to people describe their encounters with John Candy - however brief - he just might be the sole exception to that rule. Uncle Buck, Trains, Planes and Automobiles are still fun to watch. When you watch these movies, however many times, and they *STILL* make you laugh … that folks speaks volumes about John Candy. ♥️ Still miss him.
SCTV everyone in our smallish Canadian city loved it. Saw John Candy on the sidelines with Wayne Gretsky at a freezi g cold Greycup in Winnipeg 35 years ago. Even from 50 yards away it was a brush with greatness.
Hearing that John Candy in person was no different than what you’d want him to be makes me miss him so much more.
Yes!
😩😖😥
Camp Candy
If "It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice" was a person - it’d be John Candy!
WELL SAID. He might be the celebrity I miss the most
John Candy was the best…he was my favorite as a kid.
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is still one of the funniest movies ever.
I loved Uncle Buck and come to think of it… ‘tis’ the season to watch that
Agreed
Funniest and saddest.
Armed and Dangerous was hilarious also!
"Dell Griffith, American Light & Fixture: Shower Curtain Ring Division. I sell shower curtain rings. Best in the world. And you are?"
Conan is such a great storyteller. I always enjoy Conan's interviews.
Was thinking the exact same thing 😊
He can truly paint a picture
Howard said he's his favorite guest he has ever had. Conan can just talk and I'll sit there for hours.
John Candy not conan.
I recently heard him on an XM Satellite show talking about all the 90s bands that he hosted. He has an amazing story about each of them.
Candy is a great Canadian hero. Thanks to him and SCTV I survived my teens.
What is that a weed?
SCTV was, in my opinion, superior in totality to SNL. SNL had some great seasons early on, but taken as a whole, SCTV had it in spades over SNL.
I loved Jonny LaRue!!!
Lol me too!
Good advice, without John Candy, we won't have a Conan😁
John Candy was Yoda to Conan, do or do not there is no try
Thought the same thing!
Wtf is a yoda?
That photo he took of Conan was excellent, great composition
@@RaieG Go watch The Empire Strikes Back and get back to us.
@@RaieG 🥴 Wise he is.
John Candy was the best ,and is still making people laugh and smile.
John Candy is the only celebrity I cried when I heard he died. He was and still is my favorite comedic actor of all time.
Yep me too
John Candy and Chris Farley for me.
@@semyaza555
Ditto; those two where naturally funny, humble and sweet.
I watched Uncle Buck last week and got pretty misty missing him and appreciating his talent
What I love most about John Candy is his genuine humility and sweetness. He was funny and had a genuinely good heart
One comedic giant speaking very affectionately and sweetly about his mentor. John Candy and the SCTV cast are legends. Legends!
Canadian proud here, of John Candy (and rest of SCTV!). The snippet about the photos being stored in John Candy's closet made me a bit teary for some reason. Very nice story, Conan.
I felt emotional watching this. John Candy was part of my childhood. As a kid I can vividly recall him shooting me in the back.
Lmaooo
‘Uncle Buck!’ My absolute favorite John Candy movie. There is something so very comforting about watching John just be John.
Such an iconic actor and a genuine person. Gone too soon..
Belushi, Candy, and Farley did more in a few years, then most others do in multiple decades. Thanks for all the great entertainment!!
Nice sentiment
Matt Foley is still my motivational speaker!
TRUTH I loved watching all 3.
Multiple lifetimes***
Gave us chubby funny kids a chance!
John Candy…. One of our own Canadians bigger than life. We miss him so much since he departed. What a Canadian jewel of comedy that crossed over many barriers and territories… Peace.
Was it a Canadian show
@@TOCC50 SCTV was definitely Canadian, though the original Toronto stage show owed some of its roots to the Chicago troupe.
@@valkasolidor6727SCTV was primarily filmed in Edmonton, not Toronto
@@sdot5389 I agree with you, but it was an "offshoot" of the original Toronto SC troupe.
Candy should be remembered among the best.
The two John's that made the eighties legendary.. John Candy and John Hughes, I wish to thank them for the memories and god bless them both RIP
So very sweet John saved pictures of a young Conan. 🥰
It's pretty amazing he even took those photos in the first place.
I met John Candy at a Ottawa Rough rider Canadian football game . I got his autograph on the back of a Rough rider drink coupon. I still have it!!
Can I have it?
John Candy did hilarious comical impressions of Orson Welles. "You, you there. It's your fault." LOL 1-:
Then scoops up an entire turkey
"Deep, crisp.. crunchy"
I absolutely love hearing stories about John Candy
John Candy (Stripes): "I went to this doctor. Well, he told me I swallow a lot of aggression... along with a lot of pizzas!" 😂
Well sir, we were going to this bingo parlor at the YMCA, well one thing led to another, and the instructions got all fouled up...
I remember watching SCTV when I was a kid and thinking "what the heck is this madness!". Loved that show and Candy was wonderful.
John Candy is one of the greatest Canadians to grace the planet
Yep and Norm MacDonald too. RIP legends.
John Candy was one of my very favorite comedian. I can only imagine what a great time it would have been to hang out with him.

Shows how humble Candy was to take the gig from some college kid 😇
@@Lexwell_Lavers Harvard Lampoon was a prestigious place and getting big names to come speak at Harvard is amazingly easy.

John Candy as Del Griffith, absolutely peak performance
Del Griffith was a brilliant character, but I have to say Uncle Buck was his peak performance.
