RIP Guy Caballero, Sammy Maudlin, Count Floyd and al the rest of the gang that wonderful Joe Flaherty gave us. Im laughing right now Joe. Thank You. 🙏🏻🍁✝
Out of all the cast, looking back I feel Joe Flaherty was most underrated. He never really hit it big after sctv really, but he had so many really funny skits. Count Floyd, Cabelliero, Maudlin, and he actually did fairly good impressions depending on which ones he was doing, bing crosby and other ect.. Honestly didn't appreciate him as much when I was younger but I really think he is hilarious.
Juul's work is fantastic, plus he has such a fun personality! He put Joe in an amazing pastel pink suit and flowered tie on the David Steinberg Show... an outfit both hilarious and yet somehow oddly stylish. And Joe Flaherty, as always, makes it work.
@Elizabeth Frantes yeah and i was just thinking about the sketch .. K-tels fast talking playhouse. Joe plays Broderick Crawford. Just an amazingly funny impression. Also in play it again Bob with Moranis doing woody allen, Joe pops up as Bing Crosby to give advice on how to deal with Bob Hope who is obsessed with "stewed fruit" and hanging on "that bar" . Amazing stuff..
Oh yeah, and remember the hype for that show? It was all 'America's just not ready for this guy, he's so 'out there', gonna be too much for them to handle' blah, blah, blah... and he turns out to be the most boring, milquetoast TV personality EVER!
I must admit I saw Thicke of the Night and they had the Australian rock band Midnight Oil on in the early '80s and Alan Thicke granted them a respectful interview and a great venue for performances.
It's good to see this sketch posted again -- it was taken down a while back. Martin Short probably put more study and rehearsal into his scathing impression of Howie Mandel than Mandel ever put into an entire show.
Keep digging in that box hidden in your closet Quantumcat.....you're posting tremendous video's. One a day is fine and such a great way to start the day. Thanks again
Quantum Cat, you are doing good work here. I saw this episode once, many many years ago. I did not recover for three days, fortunately, this time, it is the weekend. All of us that remember the brilliance of SCTV need you.
Oh jeez, I remember guys with that "80s look" that Sammy's got here: the mullet, the pushed-up sleeves on the flimsy sport coat, the groovy loosened tie, he looks like he's ready to hit the disco or take the stage as some guy playing smooth jazz.
It was at 5:01 that Mauldin knew that without William B, his hip new show for the 80s was doomed. sidenote: Pretty sure Mauldin's theme is "Dead Giveaway" by Shalamar.
A great sketch that featured Ron James in one of his early roles and Colin Mochrie's wife Debra McGrath as well. Both Ron and Debra were members of the Second City Troupe in Toronto in the 80s so it was nice they got this opportunity to be on SCTV.
Sammy Maudlin had a double for his singing and a double for his dancing here…hopefully someday we can expect a full-time, you know, complete performance from him! :-)
I love when the set collapses and Sammy and everybody starts chasing Fred Silverman--then when Silverman is overrun and falls-Sammy yells out--"Hurt him boys...hurt him good" Sammy was really ticked off over this show and insulting Johnny Carson (LOL!!)
Maudlin of the 80’s was different then the maudlin of the 70’s! But hey, as William B might have said, what about the Sammy Maudlin of the 2020’s? The world needs him now! Calling on some old talent! Hello! How are ya! Bittman, Heatherton, etc!
Alan Thicke was so insufferable on his own show. He fancied himself as some kind of great entertainer, and the show itself was contrived to showcase what a 'great talent' that we were all so lucky to get to experience, but 90 minutes an episode seemed like 90 hours! He had a passable singing voice, but his 'lounge lizard' covers of the top hits of the day were pretty lame.
Martin's Howie Mandel is spot on, I recall Howie at times didn't seem to know where to go with a joke but he was funny and different. Love Sammy's face at 5:00 LOL,
Lol, I would like to post more William B for you, but I don't have anything that hasn't already been posted (by other users) to UA-cam. And the rest of his sketches are always available on the official DVDs. 😎
@@ryanjackson3428 Ok. I've never watched a lot of late night shows, but I did watch Alan's show a few times. I don't remember it being so hyper, but that was a long time ago. That's why I asked. I was wondering if this spoof was more of a composite of late night shows of the time, as I assume there must have been an interest in appealing to a younger audience to pull a few viewers away from Johnny Carson's ever popular show. But I'm just speculating
If you mean the episode "Thursday Night Live", it was officially released on the "SCTV: Best of the Early Years" DVD box set. So I can't actually post it. But it is a must-have for any SCTV fan. 😎
@@quantumcat6998, thanks for posting this; I wish that Second City and Shout Factory could do a complete DVD or Blu-Ray box set of this show (and have _every_ episode in it), but until that day, these videos are all that we have.
@@Neville60001 You're welcome, and I agree! I hear there's a petition floating around to get all the episodes released, but I'm not sure how it's going. But as always, fingers crossed that it will happen. 😎
It's posted on UA-cam. And "Thursday Night Live" was more of a spoof of Saturday Night Live during its 5th season (1979-1980), where the cast was overstuffed and the humor was becoming tasteless and shocking (but compared to Jean Doumdnian's terrible sixth season, season five still had some humor to it). I didn't really see any reference to "Fridays" outside of Rick Moranis as the Jack Burns-esque show announcer, though the voice he uses sounds like SNL's long-running announcer, Don Pardo.
God help me, you made me fall off the davenport. Joseph, I hope you see this and know how much we LOVE you! Most brilliant and intelligent comedian & actor, you are. Wish everybody knew it.
You're right about Poundstone. The guy named Cole who's smoking the pipe, I can't figure out who he's based on. I don't remember any "intellectual" comedians who looked like that. I think the guy with the somersaults is just simply a "zany" person.
That's the point of this sketch. Well, that and making fun of Alan Thicke and anyone who tries to make their show "hip" and "cool". It's like something The Simpsons would do (and they did, with the season eight episode "The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show").
Martin Short is doing a spot on impression of early Howie Mandel. Also it is really funny how they are making fun of the 80s in real time, when it's mostly assumed no one was aware of how putrid the mainstream of the decade was when it was happening.

Kirk Douglas
I loved Joe Flaherty--but although he wasn't a main player--the late Tony Rosato was also brilliant and underrated
The look on Flaherty's face when Martin Short can't think of one funny thing is priceless
It really is!
This was a spoof of the late night 80's show "Thicke of the Night"-that was hosted by Alan Thicke--that show bombed too
