  • 3D Mario games are often highly regarded as some of the best video games ever made. But there's one 3D Mario game that despite being loved by critics, is a bit of a controversial topic among Mario fans, that game is none other than Super Mario Sunshine. In this retrospective I try to answer the age-old question: is Super Mario Sunshine bad?

I played Mario Sunshine for the first time via 3D All Stars on Switch, and I loved my time with it. It's janky and weird, but it holds a special place in my heart (especially the voice acting; Bowser's voice is incredible). I found it to be way more enjoyable than 64 tbh

I've tried playing Super Mario 64. It's just not my thing. I don't enjoy the controls. Maybe it would have helped if I had grown up with it (since I grew up with Sunshine and Galaxy). Meanwhile, I have 100% beaten Sunshine more times than I've beaten almost any other video game; I just enjoy the experience so much, even if it's jank, glitchy, and weird with pretty subpar voice acting and some bizarre blue coin locations. The game really is magical, especially Noki Bay, Pianta Village, Sirena Beach, and all of Delfino Plaza, still Nintendo's best hub.

To me Super Mario Sunshine will always be the best 3D Mario game to me, I love the perfected "summer holiday" vibe it has, it really feels best playing it on a hot summers' day. Another thing I liked was how all the main levels are all a part of Isle Delfino instead of being entirely different worlds. I always loved how you could see the other levels from each other, like how you could see Hotel Delfino from the theme park, or see Ricco Harbor from Bianco Hills.
It made the game's world feel much more tightly connected. Mario isn't visiting different galaxies or other places in the Mushroom Kingdom, he's staying around Isle Delfino the entire time.
Every level has a almost perfect vibe of what going on holiday is like, you have Hotel Delfino, everything feels calm, like it's time to turn in your hotel and relax as the warm day comes to it's end, vs the buzzing "life" of Pinna Park, where it feels more energetic, full of rides you'd expect to see families riding them etc.
I don't think any other game perfected the summer holiday vibe as much as Super Mario Sunshine did, and I adore it for that alone.

@@jytvreal Sunshine is still a pretty fun game at times, I've played Mario Galaxy way more than Sunshine, but both games are incredibly good.
Sunshine is more of a Relaxing Vacation and Galaxy is more of an Epic Galactic Adventure, Sunshine is perfect for playing on a hot summer day while eating a popsicle, while Galaxy is more fun to play late at night, all lights off with your headphones on.
Both games are equally good, even great, if someone doesn't like a game and likes another, it's their opinion, you have your own, you shouldn't call someone else's bad just because you think differently.

I loved the worldbuilding that _Sunshine_ added to the Mushroom Kingdom, the 7 worlds ruled by Princess Peach.
We've got several whole new native inhabitants and species, a whole new Island (Delfino) located off the Western coast of *World 3,* the tropical/oceanic climate world, as well as being an outlying part of the *Dinosaur Land/Yoshi's Island* archipelago.
For me, it was akin to _Super Mario Land's_ *Sarasaland,* in which we got to see what's beyond the shifting sands of *World 2:* *Sarasaland,* Ruled by Princess Daisy. If you go far enough Southeast and follow the Oases, you'll eventually cross the border of the Mushroom Kingdom and arrive in *Birabuto Kingdom,* and from there can travel to the 4 different kingdoms of her realm; *Easton, Muda, and Chai.* so many items, natives, creatures/enemies, and unique places to explore.

The Sand Bird isn’t fun, but it really isn’t that hard to get on its side when it turns. Sunshine’s slope physics can be oddly forgiving at times, you’ve undoubtedly seen it when standing on those moving cubes. Plus you have the hover nozzle. Just stand at the side before it starts turning and make your move at the right time.

Even the Hover Nozzle doesn't help because it lacks of recovery. I did that plenty of times and each time I slip off, I have to use the Hover Nozzle to reach back on the bird. But it wouldn't let me. The mission still sucks even with the Hover Nozzle.

Super Mario Sunshine is my absolute favorite Mario Franchise game. I was never much into the Mario games. My first one was one of the GBA games. It was okay, but didn't hook me. I remember I bought Sunshine at a pawn shop for like $10 or $15 and it got me hooked right away. I grew up on it and while some things were clunky I really enjoyed it. My brothers ex-girlfriend stole that copy several years ago, but just a couple months ago my friends bought me a new one while we were at a gaming convention I was guesting at. I broke down crying. Finally getting to play it again made me so happy! I will always cherish Sunshine and the memories it's given me ❤

Crazy how the gap between Mario 64 and Sunshine was 6 years. The main reason why however was because Mario 64 2 was cancelled, Mario 128 took up some time (Though eventually became Galaxy), and Sunshine was rushed to boost GameCube sales. Like you said, a great thing Sunshine has is secrets, I think people usually underestimate it. For example, as a kid, I only ever found out Sirena Beach existed as a level after more than a year playing the game, I realized there was pineapple blocking a pipe on top of that buildind and I was like (hey, what happens if Yoshi eats it?). I was expecting a blue coin or a Shine at max, but my mind was blown away by the fact that there was an entire level hiding there, and I used to play this game a lot with my dad, my cousins and my friends, so I got super excited to show them that beautiful new level.

Super Mario Sunshine wasn't very good, its island theme was extremely repetitive, and I couldn't stand the island residents, but I wouldn't exactly call the game "bad." I also wasn't a fan of the water gun, and ironically, the special stages are my favorite part of the game (no FLUDD, no island theme!). It's similar to the US version of Super Mario Bros. 2: I had *some* fun with it, it has its charm, but as a Mario game it is different in ways that I didn't like. Of course, SMB2 *wasn't* originally developed as a Mario game, but that's beside the point.

Short answer: Yes! Yes it is!
Long answer: From my personal experience, only 40 % of SMS are actually fun, which, when talking about grades, would be a complete failure. Don't get me wrong, people can like shitty games - hell, I get some nostalgic enjoyment out of that pile of garbage that's DMC2 - but acting as if Sunshine was just a misunderstood masterpiece that could easily rival the likes of SM64 and SMG if only people werent so close-minded (like a lot of Sunshine fans claim) is just dishonest and 3D All Star proved that. Everyone liked SMG and from what I have seen online, younger gamers could get into SM64 with little to no problem and they actually liked it. It was, again, only Sunshine that people disliked.
Unlike with SM64, it's not just the control that suck. SMS has problems up the a$$ and most boil down, not to just bad controls, but to bad ideas in general. And, no, I'm not even talking about infamously bad stages like the pachinko machine! Every stage in SMS has at least two bullshit missions that simply are no fun to play. And I know what I'm talking about! I 100 %ed that game for whatever reason.
There are so many small errors with Sunshine. For example: running over the small crevice, where two floor tiles connect, can make mario do this weird stutter and drop jump imputs. Another thing that bothers me is the annoyingly long window is for sideflips and spin jumps. I often found myself running the widest angle possible, because, if I did a u-turn and then jump, Mario would do that stupid sideflip of his. And those are just minor issues that stuck with me from back when I played 3D All Stars.
So, yeah, people can make nostalgic excuses all they want, but SMS, imho, will always be the worst 3D Mario game. Still a decent to fun game if you only do the good missions.

It doesn't boot you out of levels when you collect a shine, it's semi-open world (you can actually just go to the places you see instead of having to portal to them), the blue coins don't interrupt you, and you only need 70 shines to beat the game; not beat every 7th stage.

Super Mario sunshine in my opinion is a great game with some really rough parts. I got this game for christmas in 2002 and I always played it since. I don't think I 100%'d it at all until I was older and more competent at video games. Sunshine has some very high highs and some very obnoxious lows when the game just has those moments. People say the pachinko game is annoying but I honestly don't have problems with it, You should never use the rocket nozzle in that level, it's just asking for a bad time. Same with the lily pads in the poison river, I feel like just making small taps on the button to level yourself with the coins makes it way more manageable. No I don't understand why the pachinko game has the weird force that shoves you to the right. I honestly think the chuckster level the first time in is probably really the most difficult when it comes to depth and aiming your throws right so you don't fly off the ledges. I always struggle with the last chuckster even though I know where to line him up. Blue coins can be a bitch too if you aren't using a checklist. But besides these flaws the worlds are so alive with npcs and they are so colorful and beautiful that as a kid I always wished isle delfino was real. Fuck those boats though good lord. I could write more but I'd write a novel so in conclusion
    TL;DR
Good game that has some obnoxious parts but other than that I love it

I wanted to like it, but the unusual controls and the fact that you had to get specific Shines to beat the game instead of being able to pick and choose which ones you wanted to get like in Super Mario 64, the Galaxy games, and Odyssey, made it more stressful and frustrating for me than fun. Do not use any other controller besides the GameCube controller with super Mario sunshine since other Nintendo controllers do not have pressure based controls that work only with super Mario sunshine's pressure based controls ,for the GameCube controller. none of the other Nintendo controllers have had pressure based controls only the GameCube controller has pressure based controls that only works with super Mario sunshine which super Mario sunshine needs to have access to or you will not be able to control Mario properly since the pressure controls for the GameCube controller allow you to adjust Mario's movement sensitivity wile moving him around based on how deep your inputs are.

It lets you enter levels from other levels most Shines are active at once and you do not get kicked out of areas for getting a Shine. If you use the 70 Shine version of the hack any 70 opens the final boss. I was playing Sunburn on console using a modded Wii. Working on that game as a lets play. • @MrYFM2

Two things that Super Mario Sunshine gets right over Odyssey is that the locations actually look like real places that people live and reside in. It makes the player more immersed and willing to explore the areas/ levels. It gives off a more sense of "realism" to the game. In my humble opinion, Mario Odyssey, though makes up for in the semi-open world playability, lacked these traits quite a lot.
Another thing is the hidden coins and Shine Sprites are NOT obviously hidden with clues, but are hidden in a more "natural" way like the bells in Isle Delfino being covered in black goo and cleaning them gives you a Shine Sprite (for example). In Odyssey, Power Moons would literally be placed lazily, or randomly in certain areas, sometimes just out in the open for you to grab.

The fact you have to do each of the 7 levels one at a time is so true, my games disc was scratched and I couldn’t play level 3 of gelato beach, it was the only world my game would crash on I could only play the first 2 levels, so I did the watermelon festival glitch in order to select episode 7

It's OK, I didn't grow up with it and only got it through 3D Allstars. When I go to the collection, I have a reason to go back to 64 and Galaxy, but I don't know with Sunshine. I find it to be a slightly confusing game but still well made.

I personally really like the game, so I think it's pretty good. However I STRONGLY disagree with the part where you said this game has the 2nd best controls after Odyssey. I feel the total opposite. I think Super Mario Sunshine has the worst controls of all mainline 3D Mario games.

I would recommend viewing a walkthrough first of the whole game before playing. Been playing the last few days and it's been annoying to play. Reco Harbor is really in that area didn't like the climbing aspect to get the red nuzzle. I also didn't like doing the second Blubber surfing mission in the Harbor. Had to play though it at least five times due to the fact that I kept dying after collecting all of the 8 red coins. Crashing into things with the creature.
Mario also has a tendency to slip everyware I noticed. Don't know if that was intentional or not kept losing at a lot of the secret stages because of this as well. Have wasted almost two hours in some stages due to not knowing what to do or getting the shine and not knowing how to get to it. Like I said view a walkthrough first you'll be glad you did. I messed up by not doing this.

It's a good game (not great) but there should be more levels. Only 7 main levels isn't nearly enough and the last 2 were quite lame. It feels like an unfinished game to me.

I grew up with this game and adore it to this day, so much so that I have two tattoos inspired by it. I was only 4 when it came out, and I'll be 26 this year! Last year, it became the first game I dedicated time to 100 % complete. I will always come back to it, despite all the rage some levels caused (and still cause) me all those years ago! The Manta Storm terrified me as a kid but now it's one of my favourites. The hours I spent running around the hotel making up scenarios too! I could go on forever 😂

Love the pitch for the open world Isle Delfino sequel. Big fan of the game as it is but an open world along with some polishing (and hopefully a long jump lol) would be an easy purchase for me. Thanks for the vid!

I really enjoyed this game as a kid in 2002. I played it a ton at a buds house and got to the part where you had to clean some deep sea monster's teeth, then he lost his memory card lol. I picked the game up a few years later (2007 I believe) and wanted to complete it on my Wii. The big stand out with my second run of this game were the clunky controls. I could barely control Mario. It seemed liked where I intended to jump never worked out, and simply getting him across a narrow platform was nearly impossible without him falling off. I played a variety of video games at the time and was relatively good at them and I wondered if it was just me? However, tons of forums and general peer responses of this game were against the controls and the glitchy levels. Some of those side shine quests were poorly designed, filled with glitches, and were borderline impossible to successfully complete due to the clunky controls. I put the game down again when I was halfway through the harbor level and haven't played it since.
A few years ago I was excited to hear Nintendo was re-releasing Sunshine alongside SM64 and Galaxy. But because reviews stated they never polished the controls or corrected the glitches I felt there was little reason to give this game a third try. I consider it unplayable until its errors are corrected.

yeah ive had similar experiences to you even though the video talks about how crisp the movement is. i guess i feel something in between, because while i feel like the movement itself never fails me, the collisions of objects in the levels can be so bad at times. especially the bonus stages where shadow mario steals your fludd-- i've died so many times because mario kinda just glitches on a slope or corner and becomes uncontrollable. even if i'm moving as intended, a lot of the time the levels do not respond to mario how i want them to

As someone who played the hell out of Super Mario Sunshine when I was a kid I was shocked and confused to hear that people think it's a bad game. I think that's all that needs to be said, aside from the jank stuff like the blooper racing and lilypad being terrible.

@@jaretco6423 For sure it really is. The other 3D Mario games don't have sour spots but Sunshine has a good few you can just count up off the top of your head, like those ones and the damn watermelons. It was overall still a really fun experience to me though, regardless of reused minibosses and janky boat physics, and comedicly awkward voice acting will always just be that, comedic. It's like if one could say Galaxy, Galaxy 2, Odyssey, and 64 are 10/10s or 9/10s, Sunshine would be a 7.5/10.

i LOVED this game and think it's somewhat underrated, but I totally get why it doesn't rank very high on people's list of mario games
    - it came after super mario 64, which is one of the most influential games of all time
    - it takes some detours from the tried and true mario formula
    - it has a single location, versus its predecessor where we got so much variety
    - the graphics quality was a little rough around the edges (although I think the art direction was fantastic)

Nice review and analysis. Im 30 shines in, and i am done. This game is missing something and i dont know what is it. Im playing 3D allstars. I finished 64 for the first time in my life, despite i played it a lot in my childhood. But finishing Mario 64 and jumping into Sunshine felt really weird. I gave it a chance, but its not my thing. Moving onto Galaxy
EDIT: 20:22 That's just not true. The movement is too weird. In 64 you felt the momentum, and you could pull so much shit off.

  • @nathancphillips2497
    @nathancphillips2497 Рік тому +2

I disagree completely on the movement… I found it extremely janky and unresponsive, the amount of times Mario slipped over randomly or got stuck made me cancel my full 120 shine run.
I have a theory on why the controls feel off though, I honestly think it’s the frame rate.
In early sunshine reveals it was clearly a 60fps game but I guess somewhere in its rushed development they had to half the frame rate due to performance issues.
Playing it on dolphin at 60fps fixes MOST of my issues with the movement.
And yeah having the shine restriction was stupid.. it ruins the open ended ness that 64 gave

Anyone with a PC, I recommend installing the Super mario sunburn mod, and the 4k mario sunshine texture pack. Both of these mods are on UA-cam and very easy to install. The sunburn mod lets you play sunshine without being booted out of a level after collecting a shinesprite. The 4k pack lets you play it with way better textures/graphics

Your videos are amazing. I'm currently in the process of writing a few videos on the Paper Mario series. How do you go about writing your scripts out? Do you pick a particular section and write about it, then put them together or do you have a more linear approach?
