- Hydration can be a controversial topic. How important are electrolytes? Are sports drinks like Gatorade and Powerade optimal for performance and health? There's also the question of alcohol and whether or not moderate consumption is a risk or a health benefit. Today Dr. Shawn Baker MD covers all aspects of hydration with what drinks should be avoided and which are ideal.

We are the only animals that don’t know what to eat and drink anymore
I always ask myself if a lion ever says “Maybe I shouldn’t eat the skin of this antelope today. I think I’ve had too much lately 🤔” Lol.
@@stefanie7588 exactly 😂
We are also the ONLY animals on the planet that drink another animal's breast milk.
So we breast feed off of cows - through their estrogen loaded breast milk, dairy, butter, ice cream, cream, etc, etc.. 🤡🤡🤡
That's on purpose - always be researching and learning.

Starting carnivore was really easy, nearly 2 month in and is not eager to quit like every other diet i have tried. The weightloss is amazing, and the food is awesome. Best thing ever:)
It's almost too good to be true! I've always loved beef, fish, and eggs! I can eat all I want, and the weight is melting off. Of course exercise plays a role. We can do this!!

I'm a retired American who lives in France. I've been carnivore for the past year, after 2 years on Keto. Typically, I drink 2 to 3 liters of water a day. I take electrolyte supplements with each meal. I also drink 3 or 4 cups of café crème a week - no sugar, no sweeteners. (The crème in France is full fat). Lastly, I drink 2 glasses of wine every a month (this is France after all). I usually have a single glass every other Friday night when we go out to dinner with friends, and I haven't experienced any negative side effects from the wine. I've dropped 36 kilos (80 pounds) since I started my journey and am now only 6 pounds away from the same weight I was when I was 25. My philosophy "what's the use of living if you have to be so good?" I'm 73 and feel like I'm in my 30's. Find what works for you.
Amen. Carnivore is a great baseline from which to experiment adding things back in. It's also delicious and fulfilling in and of itself to a lot of dieters.
Nice, i just started being a carnivore. i am french. I thought I would still drink wine once in a while and i do coffee cream too even some berries when i eat crème fraîche 😊
@@Steger13 I retired to France 6 years ago from the US. I agree with you. I have been carnivore for 18 months. The quality of the meat in France is simply the best. I still have a glass of wine every other Friday night when we go out to dinner with friends. I also drink café crème. To help avoid cramps in my legs I eat 2 avocados and 300gms of blueberries each week. Bonne année!
@@twofarg0ne763 I leave in the USA for 16 years, from 1992 till 2008. Was married then later divorced but i made a terrible mistake,is that I never got my US passport. As a metal worker who uses solvents, alcohol is a strange thing to think about really.
I really like beer, but I am also self-consciously aware that I am drinking diluted solvent. I also know that it is associated with terrible late-life issues, especially to do with cognition, and generative brain disorders. I am slowly coming to the conclusion that its time to entirely quit because I dont want to be one of those people with no marbles left when Im old.
Of course water is "The Universal Solvent."
@@dianac5764 Only if it is categorically pure. Then it is a solvent more potent than alcohol. However "regular" water is a significantly weaker solvent than alcohol.

The challenge often is not saying no to certain foods or beverages, but the fact that our society, culture are centered around it.
C, C, C's (cannabis, coffee, and carnivore) work for me. My bp and bmi are normal. I feel wonderful at 71 and very active.
SMOKE WEED EVERY DAY! just started carnivore

Why would you try to do something healthy for your body, and then smoke weed?
Won't caffeine and THC cancel each other out?
I do keto vore and need way less coffee now and sleep better!
Coffee constrict the peripheral vessels which makes people feel warmer (cold countries). Tea relaxes the peripheral vessels (good in hot countries) and helps the body to cool.
Citation?
Tea is full of oxalate. Coffee, thankfully Ian isn’t.
I'm a year and 2 months doing carnivore and recently enhanced my weight loss by adding intermittent fasting. I added coffee to my diet to help with this change and seems to be working fine.
you not get weight when eat meat 3 times, every day. water in flesh ( body-meat ) is what gives more weight than wanted,
but on the other way, for look bigger /stronger without very good shaped muscle, drink much water helps. ;)
proof /test, give much water to a dry meat, much will go in.
Coffee is a poison. Caffeine can kill many animals on earth in only small amounts. Look up the book caffeine blues. It explains all of the issues that come from caffeine. If you are having trouble with IF try carbonated water.

The healthiest way to eat and drink is only animal based products(as raw as possible) and at least 3 liters of water with celtic seasalt (plasma). I practice this for more than 3 years now and with 71 years old, I feel like in my forties and in perfect health!😀
I'm doing carnivore combined with one meal a day and I'm doing a 7 day water/electrolyte ONLY fast every couple of weeks. I've refined what I'm doing as I go on, but I'm on a roll now. I'm down 50 pounds in two months! And I have felt incredible. I feel younger, stronger, clearer, and best of all SMALLER every day. When asked how I have done it, my response is, "why WOULDN'T I want to feel this good?" It is self-reinforcing in a way that no "diet" has ever been. Its so great that I don't consider it a diet at all. This is just how I eat now. I'm doing my best to keep the results to myself so far because I do not want to be that fat guy that touts how they have found the secret to losing weight, only to fall short. I'm going to wait until the results are unmistakable and people I know ask ME what I've been up to. THEN they will get an earful about their carb addictions!
Appreciate this as I'm about to give Carnivore a go.
Might I ask how old are u? Did I had pbs as me I feel my heart racing fatigue constipated I was obligated to add 1 avocado..for electrolytes any advice?
Man, I'm the same way concerning coffee. Love the smell; I'm old enough to remember coffee beans being ground at the A&P grocery store. Smelled heavenly. Hate the taste, though.
Diet colas provoke an insulin response in me. I tested this on myself with a glucose meter. In a fasted state I measured my glucose, then chugged a Coke Zero, then tested again about 45 minutes later. My glucose had gone down eight points, a sure sign some insulin had been secreted.
Anything that tastes sweet will trigger a release of insulin, irregardless of calorie content - Dr Ken Berry did a fine video covering this topic.
I am always skeptical people can be "over" past foods they used to eat- they may logically know they are useless/bad but if you talk to drug addicts they will tell you that the craving or desire never fully goes away and modern food is more drug than food.
I have Zero Cravings for Alcohol , Tobacco , Carbs or Sugar .
I was once addicted to All of Them
I got to hand it to you Doctor Baker. In the face of all the vegans who hate you, you have such a calm demeanor especially when it comes to talking about Concepts such as this. I'm surprised you didn't mention energy drinks. Or did you and I missed it? Again fantastic information thank you so much.
I would too if I was 6'5" and has his build.
Energy drinks are just sports drinks with extra crap in them, and sports drinks are just soft drinks with or without carbonation
Recently withdrew caffeine from my intake again. Every time it's a struggle if I've been drinking coffee daily. Anything that causes severe headache and nausea when you quit to abruptly cannot be good for you. If I could limit myself to a rare cup of coffee for a special occasion, I would do that. It's just to easy to jump back on the hooch daily when I have just one cup. The struggle is real.
It really is! I did two years carnivore without coffee. Felt great! I got re-addicted and it is a gateway drug to sugar for me and caused my body pain to come back
I actually quit coffee when I started carnivore. My reason was 1-I knew I could do it because I've quit coffee before and 2-I put stevia and cream in my coffee so I wanted those things gone. I drank water like crazy and electrolytes, and used Advil to kill the caffeine-withdrawl headaches. 2.5 days later, couldn't believe I was able to stay awake all day without that caffeine!
Alcohol is my problem I am trying to reduce, but it takes time. Thank you for your videos.
Wean off it and your quality of life will increase dramatically . Good luck !
Water is not only my favorite beverage, it's pretty much the only beverage that I regularly and consistently consume daily, hourly, all the time. I love water!

Nice Hat Doctor!!! Go Buccaneers!!!. Thank you as well for all of the information. I am new to the carnivore life style and am already gaining the benefits. Thanks again.
To me, sparkling water helps me avoiding soda. As for coffee and tea, I’ve been adding butter to my coffee and matcha. It has helped me with energy and cravings these past few days. It’s a great advice to separate them from the meals, I hadn’t thought about that.
I do the same thing! I love sparkling water.
i lost all interest in alcoholic beverages since i started carnivore. there's also some studies that suggest most of the so-called benefits of alcohol aren't actually real at all. you'd be better off drinking coffee and zero sugar soda every day than having an alcoholic drink every other night or whatever the studies say ( i think it's every night? ) who knows but i wouldn't really touch alcohol now unless it's a really expensive whiskey and it's just to taste test it out of curiosity lol
Thanks, Doc. I’m on this; I’m going full carnivore by end of month. Mostly carnivore for past three years. Bad drinks are my non-carnivore difference in that time.

I’ve been thinking about going Carnivore, but I refuse to lay off alcohol as a former 3rd Birg Ranger I’ve been through some stuff. I need to do the carnivore diet though..
I drink a lot of coffee and I decided I wouldn’t give it up when I started carnivore, almost 60 days in and I find myself drinking less and not really enjoying the taste as much. Not making any decisions about it but I think I will most likely stop at some point.
Drank more soda as a younger man than any human should in their lifetime. Went to coffee for years and still drink it. Have just started drinking the AG1 product, the coffee cravings are so much lower with less than 1 month of using it. Hope this helps.
Had one coffee yesterday. Realized I don't miss it.
Also Shawn, what do you think of freshly squeezed lemon juice in warm water? How about Organic Apple Cider Vinegar?
I started my Carnivore Lifestyle on Monday 1 January 2024. I stopped those artificial drinks "Cold Turkey". I either drink still water, mineral water or Bubly water. I would rather give those up than give up coffee for the moment. I try to limit myself to 2 cups of coffee per day and I use a little heavy cream in it. As for sweetner, I stopped using those little table sweeteners. The one I used had Maltodextrin in it (aka Corn Starch, Food Starch, Glucose Syrup or Corn Syrup) but is also known to be worse than actual sugar. It is used as a filler and they get away with calling it ZERO "anything" but I do advise people to look into the drawbacks of it. I have changed to Monk fruit (Erythritol). It's the lesser of the two evils tbh but I plan on NOT having ANY sweetener in my coffee at all. It may take a while, but that is my aim. That being said, I have only been on this for 5 days and the pain that I have lived with in my legs for 10 years is starting to ease. Especially in the knees. Yes I am documenting this journey and yes I am vlogging and uploading. I have a funny feeling that THIS is going to be the lifestyle that STICKS. I have thrown so many diets at the wall and NONE of them have stuck....but I think this one will!!!!
I did a week dry fast like 2 years ago i was just zero supplements zero salt i honestly felt pretty good the whole time

I have a question, I was telling a friend about my beef, bacon, butter, eggs and salt diet. He was telling me that that was the basis of the original Atkins diet. He said that it could hurt my kidneys or liver, I can't remember which, if I continue it for a long period of time with out at least some carbs. Is this true? I've never heard that from you or Dr Ken Berry. Thank you for any answers!!
I love hearing a doctors perspective.

I’ve always drunk my tea and coffee with no sugar or milk. I have decided to give up coffee for lent. I also don’t drink tea at meal times or in the evening. Years ago I heard the tea at meal times interferes with iron absorption. Very informative....can I drink green tea during carnivore?
Starting carnivore was an extremely easy adjustment for me and now I am noticing that coffee isn't tasting as good to me as it use to so I think I'm on the verge of giving it up. I had to give up tea right away because I was never able to drink it without some sort of sweetener. Great Video as usual 😃 OH and does anyone know if it matters if you drink ice water as opposed to room temp?
I think ice water may slow down digestion. I noticed that when I drank it shortly after eating I would get a stomach ache. I can drink a little room temperature water with food but not much, otherwise I believe I am diluting my digestive juices. My digestion may be below par though...I don’t know. Hours after eating I can drink sparkling water with ice in it no problem. I usually cut off eating around 2p and sparking water with ice in it is my go to ‘treat’/evening cocktail. I encourage you to experiment on yourself. Your body will let you know what’s not working.
Drink 2 cups of water 30 mins before I eat, never feel bad, full carnivore as well

Pro tip: Don’t try Gatorade Zero on a 5 day fast! I tried it once a long time ago (because I was getting low on electrolytes by day 4) and I suddenly felt fatigued and just felt really bad. Suspecting the artificial sweetener had dropped my blood glucose too low, I ended my fast and resumed eating. I felt back to normal right away. Gatorade zero with food or during a 24 hour fast seems to be fine. I don’t regularly drink Gatorade zero.

And I tried decaffeinated tea once and shortly after i felt weak and my hands were a little shaky, so I avoid that too. Never like soda, or juice. Worried too much about all that sugar causing cavities. Since last Sept I have been carnivore, and water taste perfect. 👌🏻
One thing that I bet everyone would like to hear about is the concern about deuterium in water- should we worry?
Also, many of us live in areas where cities are putting fluoride in our water. I read fluoride found in water and toothpaste competes with iodine that is found naturally in foods, so too much fluoride can lead to all sorts of problems, including thyroid issues and brain disorders. Have heard of people using osmosis water filtration devices. Will that truly help?
I don’t know if reverse osmosis removes fluoride. I do know however that drinking water with fluoride is an absolute no go. It is non negotiable that you remove it if you want to stay healthy long term. I read about this in a book and it made sense. Luckily I live in a country where no fluoride is added (the Netherlands) and my area has some of the cleanest water. Good water filters are expensive.
@@mvd3804 and I know if we have hard water it can ruin the reverse osmosis devices.
Reverse Osmosis is the best way to filter water. Only thing you have to worry about is supplementing trace minerals, because along with removing all the bad stuff like heavy metals and residual pharmaceuticals, it strips the water of its minerals. Berkeley Filters are great! I also just got a BLUVUA countertop RO unit that is fantastic.

I drink 8oz of coconut water a day for the potassium and magnesium. It’s like 8g a sugar and i have it after my workout and fast to negate the small amount of sugar .
What do you think about coconut water with no added sugar ?
what do you drink for pre-workout on carnivore? I've been on it for 1 week and love it. I haven't heard your opinion on pre-workout drinks.
Started Carnivore 10 days ago. Not overweight and train/exercise religiously daily. A tad strength loss, probably due to carb to fatty acid oxidation metabolism change. Had some bathroom issues first 4 days and now stiffness in back area (researched and it's oxalate dumping). Tea's have oxalates, fyi.
I was drinking distilled water like an iDiOT. Was getting horrible cramps, etc... I do still drink distilled but now I add mineral drops, LMNT powder, & I take a mineral supplement. I just can't bear the thought of dirty water from a regular fridge filter, and the reverse osmosis fancy nice filters are out of my budget. My big distilling glass canister works great as long as I add 20-30 mineral drops per day plus my LMNT &/or a mineral supplement a few times a week.
Well, I wonder if drinking less would actually be a good way to keep body temperature a bit higher... It's cold at winter and I work at cold place year round. Feeling cold makes you urinate more, that could be a natural way to get rid of extra water so that body temperature can raise a bit...
Someone at work gave him that coffee... working in a kitchen...
Anyone thinking what I'm thinking? 😂
Dr. Baker I am not sure if you have previously mentioned ACV but if you haven’t could you please add your 2 cents for us on it!? Thank you
I think your editor put the wrong product up. He put up Element. There's another cleaner product called LMNT.
Had a bad experience last week, which I now believe to be caused by alcohol. I'm finished with it! Now going through withdrawal symptoms and I didn't think I was a heavy drinker.
I have gone off and on coffee all my life. Caffeine does not keep me awake. This year I went off coffee as a cost saving measure. Filtered water is my go to beverage now. I went off alcohol two years ago. Don't miss that either. I treat myself with diet tonic water- as an anti-coof measure.
Dr Huberman says that although you sleep okay caffeine suppresses your REM sleep.

I just drink plain water. I rarely drink coffee, but I discovered that a little bit of salt and butter with coffee is yummy.
You gotta add stuff to the coffee like coconut oil butter vanilla extract monkfruit sweetener etc.
I finally quit coffee just over a week ago. The withdrawals lasted about four days: muscle aches, headache, fatigue, irritability. It was worth it. Im very glad Im not dependent on it anymore. I was drinking about a pot a day. Almost two years carnivore.
Does an occasional pinch of salt help with hydration when drinking water? for the Sodium and magnesium replenishment? Himalayan pink salt? is there a difference?
For me even white wine diluted with fizzy water raises blood pressure. Once I stop drinking for a day, base blood pressure goes down 59 bpm.
No problem giving up whiskey and I love whiskey. But now I sleep so much better, sometimes through the night which is major for me and I like that feeling more than a drink. It can only have a positive effect on my running and lifting, in fact, I have found a renewed motivation for running and i am upping my miles. I credit the better sleep.
I use a type of water filter which wipes out the minerals. Does that leach minerals from the bones? Should I replace the minerals by supplements? Thank you.
I salt my food with Redmond’s, or Himalayan or Malden and also use Nu Salt (potassium chloride) and take magnesium glycinate.

How about water with a little lemon juice? Like a teasp?
@ 5:35 FYI TEA DRINKERS. I'm in the middle of an experiment; Often, in the mornings when sitting writing or sitting in front on the computer, I get knife-stabbing pain between my chest and my left shoulder. I eat meat and eggs mostly. But I also eat fresh cream often, and I drink 2 or 3 or more cups of Chai Tea every day. I figured one of those two things are the cause. I quit the Chai Tea first...and it's been over a week and, guess what...no more knife-stabbing pain. So it ain't the cream.
I'll keep it up for another week or so before I start drinking it again just to see what happens.

@@marlan5470 🤷♂I went back to drinking tea and I still eat cream and I still sit at the same table to do my writing and that knife-stabbing pain has never returned. So, go figure. 🤷♂ I'm sure glad it's gone though! 😁
I've noticed that when I chug a pint of water, as soon as I wake up, and i mean 1st thing right when i stand up out of bed, I don't crave coffee at all
I hate drinking plain tap water, and therefore use a sodastreamer along with some sugar free flavors, doesnt affect me in any negative way. Drinking coffee and sugar free energy drinks regularly as well, love me some caffeine. Dont really bother that much with electrolytes. When I'm feeling like I'm deficient (nausea, headaches, cramps etc), I'll add a teaspoon of no-salt and half a teaspoon of magnesium sulphate to my liter bottles for the day as an easy fix.
Tap water is only good for flushing toilets...
@Nostalgia your comment was censored by YT and is not here. Tap water IS poisoned with not just fluoride but chlorine and other chemicals almost everywhere on earth.
