Lol so the Rivian tonneau cover is much simple, less expensive, requires less space and doesn’t work😂
It won't stop thieves like cybertruck but it could hide your valuable stuff
I have the 2.0 on my Rivian. It works fine. The 1.0 worked for me, just super clunky.
Rivian COVER dosent last.
even the PRESS vehicles had Malfunctioning bed covers. 2x press vehicles same Group.
when Rivian began Deliveries , same problem.
MOST Rivian customers GAVE UP and kept cover Always open or closed.
Most accurate explanation I have seen so fare 😂🤣
Really the major issue with the Rivian system is it needed two motors instead of a connecting rod (or a larger motor and connecting rod), and larger sprocket teeth with deeper engagement. It's a beautifully elegant design. Cybertruck tonneau looks like an existing roller door design only slightly adapted to this use. It almost looks like an off-the-shelf product dropped in.
🙋♂️THANKS KEVIN , WALKER AND THE MUNRO TEAM FOR SHARING 🧐😎💚💚💚
Every single Chinese mom and pops store in China Town has a tonneau cover as their shop door.
Lose the back glass, replace the rear view mirror with a screen. Move the cover housing up, reducing the tonneau slats. Create a route through into the cabin from the bed.
You should build an EV truck yourself.....
Ultimately, I think the 'rear' view camera should have been mounted on the "roof" above the rear window. Or a second rearview camera. It seems like the rear glass is only there so you can use the rearview mirror when the tailgate is down.
Yes there are many complaints about the "tank slit" back window, and how useless the rearview mirror is considering the best aero comes with cover down.
Too many words;
not enough seeing the motor move the little pointy things🥺
The shape of the gear cam teeth looks really cool!
Tesla should Make the back window openable ! 😊
Probably a safety issue with the way the tonneau cover operates. Think Guillotine level of safety risk
@@FlipBoxStudiothat wasn’t a real concern on other moving parts. Plus this is likely the easiest place to detect an issue

Kevin underestimates the value of the tonneau cover’s security. He compares the CT to legacy trucks and their use cases, instead of wondering what full autonomy with a safe cabin and a secure cargo ‘vault’ could bring ..
Yeah. Rest of the world does absolutely not need all this nonsense complexity. We simply use a van to transport stuff.
@@ABa-os6wm - vans are fine if you are always carrying cargo.
If you want a vehicle that can carry cargo when you need it but has much better aerodynamic efficiency the 98% of the time you are NOT carrying a significant amount of cargo, this is the better choice.
CT cover is actually low in complexity and more parts. Also way more failsafe designed.
Can you elaborate on how this is fail safe design? I’m clueless there, thanks.
How does it fail safely?
nope
@@ItsBondoBaby I suspect he really means a more reliable or a fail proof design. The mechanism appears much more robust in many ways by both deign and construction. For example, wider slats are more prone to binding from a slight skew than the narrow CT slats; slat skew further exasperated by the use of a single light duty motor with a small diameter connecting rod vs two hefty (easily synched stepper) motors; CT slat trolleys are heftier and their engagement with the motor drivers more robust than the tiny gear teeth of the Rivian to name just a few.
Great job
Speed Up the ad to make it more interesting, with pitch stabilization of course. The WPM is too damn low.
1.5 to 2x FTW!
great to see the breakdown as always. great job and could be more clear and concise.
Mine sheared the snow/ice from the segments right off at the roof line it dives under. It was bad ass. I had just drove it home for the first time and I picked it up in a snow storm. I was still trying to figure out buttons and opened the Cybertruck tonneau accidentally. Even so, still no problems.
When I got up close to a CT, I was impressed by the sturdiness of the closed cover. It doesn't look that strong in videos. Nice.
Have you done a tensile test on the door? I really want to know the tensile strength and elongation at break so we can calculate it's toughness.
I'm betting 1'690 MPa and 25%
That would make it one of the toughest steel alloys ever made.

There will always be old school purists that demand an old school truck, so that segment of the industry will never die.
Kind of wish you could remove the bed to put other stuff there.

The cover is really cool. This is the major reason I think most people should consider a van and not a truck - why would you want your tools & valuables to not only be outside in the rain but vulnerable to theft?

It will be interesting to see whether Cybertruck will be a work truck. I have read comments on either side. Somehow I think that there will be some people that use it in a work situation and adapt to its differences while seeing the ease of use, convenience of electricity for work related needs, easily secured truck bed, freedom from rust, less damage to vehicle, etc. as a plus for many of the needs they have. But time will tell.
Cybertruck is outselling RIVIAN 2:1 .......lol.

The CT Tonneau is long but covers a greater volume due to it going up to the roof. So taller items should fit up by the back window with the tonneau closed
A Cyber Truck owner demonstrated his tonneau cover to me 2 days ago, and I was surprised how smooth and quietly it operated.
It would have been interesting to have a video operating comparison between the two systems.
As always, thanks for the understandable overview for us non-engineers.

Pipboy you mean?
Nice work, but it feels like maybe a better outline of items and points to discuss would have helped the flow and reduced some redundancy.
Saying "POM" is not helpful without defining it.
Polyoxymethylene (POM), also known as acetal, polyacetal, and polyformaldehyde, is an engineering thermoplastic used in precision parts requiring high stiffness, low friction, and excellent dimensional stability.
I think it’s only fair to say that the limitations that the CT may have as far as rear view visibility is often similarly faced with standard trucks in many situations such as when with a camper top, with a large load or a trailer. IMO if you drive a big truck you should be comfortable being able to view things behind using just your side mirrors and if it were me I’d add spherical blind spot mirrors to those.
Just needs a screen where the rear view mirror would be. I have one in my truck, it's great. The rear view on the main screen seems so silly but I haven't driven one yet so I won't dismiss it just yet.
I have a camper shell and I never look backwards other than camera and mirrors.
Excellent.....Tesla makes a great product
I had a 64 Ford van that didn't have glass In the back doors.
GM had one recently, smaller sized, maybe HHR
Reminds me of the old 1980s TV cabinets with dual sliding covers (made of wooden veneer strips) that open/close from both sides😊. Hope they have some kind of software lock to the motor(looks more like a beefed up wiper motor?)🤞. If not, Hot wiring the tonneau cover(powering the worm gear? motor externally?), might become a Tiktok trend 🤞❤👍
I suspect CT cover assembly is all automated
I saw a video where it stopped working, it gets a bit skewed and jams up. Enjoy it while it's new, I guess.
You think all the trucks will be perfect in every way? Shit breaks sometimes, but not all are necessarily defective. Maybe, the one that broke was DEFECTIVE in the first place????
Great vid. From a Munro perspective what market segment is the Cybertruck pursuing or is it just a concept vehicle and Engineering exercise to work through a new manufacturing approach?
As for the rear view mirror - point taken but anyone who has towed anything has learned to use side mirrors. And keeping the rear cameras clean takes a moment. Wasn't it Lamborghini that said, "What's behind me is not important". (Unless you're towing.)
The cyberTruck cover much of the pickup truck segment in its class. It falls between the F150 and F250 based on power and capacity. It is also eating into the SUV segment and a segment of buyers who are buying it because it is neither or both.
@@danharold3087 - hmm. I don't see it as a classic pickup / work vehicle at all. To me its more like the VW "Thing" - in a space all its own. But we know from Munro's coverage the build method is the real effort here.
@@dennisfahey2379 It has the load, tow, and power of a conventional pickup. Lacks the range. A problem common to electric pickups in general. There is a lot of ways of looking at this vehicle. It is easy to look at it and see it how we want to see it. It is not a old school pickup with an 8 ft bed. If it was it would not be selling as well. Neither are the Ford Rivian or GM electric trucks selling well. Will have to see what all e BE pickups including CT sales look like over the next couple of years to know for sure.
I don't think people in general will realize the advantages of the CT structural design until they start buying used parts from the salvage yard to repair their trucks with a socket wrench instead of sending it to a body shop.

Assuming some level of dirt/debris will eventually collect where the tonneau cover rolls up inside the vehicle body over time, is there a way to access the area in order to clear it?
might have been answered but if dirt was to follow the tonneau cover down will it just build up in garage area or fall down to the ground?
I saw the TFL guys are having alignment issues with their Cybertruck, so the issues may be making the news soon.
Would be interested to see or know how the Retrax Powertrax Pro design compares to this. Obviously, it’s not an integrated solution, but I think it’s the segment leader for aftermarket solutions on standard bed trucks and it seems fairly similar to Cybertruck’s solution.
I can attest that I never had issues with mine aside from the amount of space it took up in my 5.5” F150 Platinum bed during my ownership. Never heard any complaints from my buddies about their’s either. 🤷♂️
& I'm a fan of these trucks.
Kind of a pointless over engineered feature considering the fact that 95% of CT owners are office workers in california who will never put a single thing in the bed of their toy truck.
So jealous and salty we get it you can’t afford it and you’re broke
The Cybertruck is in Norway, and on its way allround EU now to show off the Cybertruck now. I really enjoyed this video. I'm having a problem with my tonneau cover where one side is pushing more than the other. Maybe you could shed some light on that? Also, I'd like to suggest a video about the rack system. It's only rated for 440 pounds, which is pretty light for a truck. It would be interesting to see if there's a way to mount it to the vehicle's skeleton to increase the rating to something closer to 1,000 pounds.

So there is no way, ever with this config, to build or retrofit even a small pass-through right similar to the silverado EV? even one that would not go all the way down would be good to use the vault access as a camper, but clearly the design of the vault makes that ideal feature impossible?
Would like to have seen a comparison to a motorized coiling door to the cyber truck system. It seems very similar to it.
Excellent insights.
My first thought is grit.. how will all those moving parts fare after 10 years of opening and closing in the grime and dust and mud?
Do all those little wheels carrying the cover need to be lubricated?
It's obvious Kevin does not like the Cybertruck. You didn't mention the dual-motors or repairability - as in how easy it might be to repair damaged slats.
What happens to water and debris that enters the system when it retracts?
Thank you for the presentation. How do the two motors align, so that the panels stay parallel? A slight difference and the panels will scramble.
This is Tesla. They may monitor the motors and ensure they work together to keep i straight. If they don't I expect they could. They do a lot of interesting things with motors.
What's weight of the two systems? What's the load bearing limit on the top of the Rivian cover? Cybertruck says ~250 lbs. Durability? You guys don't seem willing to commit like Sandy does. /2c
Talking about how complex it "looks" is a so what for me. What will be the reliability in dusty condition like Arizona and salt environments like in the North Eastern parts of the USA? I see a concern for either of those environments.
Cool
My only complain for my pending CT is that my dogs cannot go into the bed via the back seat. I know the safety issue but I'm sure some electronic monitoring with triple backup would allow a hole to be placed where the center fold down seat is to allow some back and forth AND the benefit of loading in some very long lumber or pipes. I'm hoping Tesla will reconsider that somewhere down the road.
NOPE , they wont .

@@danharold3087 Yeah but its almost identical to roller doors for shop fronts. It honestly looks like its off-the-shelf to me. Like they either licensed it or just stole someone-else's design. It seems very un-Tesla like in many ways.
@@patreekotime4578 Good observation. The important thing is that it seems to be working well.
Would be nice if Tesla had developed a rearview mirror with a display, along with a washer for the back camera. It looks so bad to have the rear camera taking up screen space. I love the Vault Cover and the concept of Cybertruck, but ever since the stainless steel became just paneling, it seems like the weight penalty ruins the efficiency gains from the aerodynamics. Please just give us a Model Y truck with air suspension. That's what the market needs. Ford should do that for Ranger and make a 1999-size F150 electric.
Every time I see those cybertruck aluminium castings the coating (including the colour) reminds me of the treatment and the coating that was used on the insides of aluminium barrels to protect them from the corrosive properties of the beer. To get that coating to adhere there was a chromate process to key the surface of the aluminium to accept/bond the coating. Is something similar being used by Tesla here?
You know what i wonder if alot of the issues on the cybertruck came frome making it 5% smaller
Seems like there's only 7 different parts in the tonneau cover from Cybertruck, for the part that rolls out.
In a way TESLA just copied a window roller shutter that exists for ages, RIVIAN made something simple very complex.
What is the load capability of the Rivian tonneau cover?
I have read 100 lbs for the Rivian vs 300 lbs for the Cybertruck
Imagine:
"Hey Mr Musk here's the new 'cybertruck' from GM... d'you think we could reduce the part count, make it cheaper, lighter, and increase the capacity at the same time?"
"Ah. Of course. But, but people might call it a van. This is America."
15:50 The position of the tonneau cover roll has no bearing on the height of the window. That's dictated by the roof slope and tailgate height.
Tonneau: Tesla: strong, rugged, powerful and reliable, but may cost more; Rivian: looks nice, works, kinda...sometimes.
Not mentioned: the disadvantage that the wall behind the back seats is fixed => less space to sleep in, no possibility to put longer loads into the vehicle.
Good Job... Note: Your thumbs up does not work from UA-cam, you might check on it!!
WE'D RATHER SEE JORDAN MOVE AROUND THE BACK OF THE TRUCK.
Curious there is not a functional requirement to see out the back glass.
Lots of talk about the security of a cover. I thought especially the EVs want it for the lowering of drag coefficient? Or is it irrelevant?
This cover on the Cybertruck - as has been said several times - is very complex, expensive and probably prone to failure. If you need it, you should have it. - Thanks for the video! -
But if I say that a solar roof would constantly refresh the batteries of any car, as planned by Aptera, cost-benefit calculations are immediately brought up. One can only speculate how much more useful a small Model2 for around 20kDollar would have been to the world now, in the harmonious and beautiful Tesla style, unlike the Cybertruck, which I unfortunately don't like at all because there is hardly any efficiency, elegance or global usefulness in it.
The Rivian is proven to be failure prone, no reports of any trouble with cybertruck tonneau as of yet.
Normal truck aftermarket cover 1,000 bucks. Manual mechanism and it just works every time all the time. Not fancy but it just works.
Your answer is too generic. There are 100s of various aftermarket tonneau covers. All at different pricepoints, pros + cons and use cases. Cybertruck has sail panels that are a con for those prioritizing lifting items over the side, but the truck does lower- where most trucks do not have air suspension. New full sized trucks are very tall. You need a step stool anyway. The height, strength and security of CT's tonneau make it very unique. Your average $1500 bed cover will not cover taller items and many are not secure against determined thieves.
This is a very robust mechanism. Motorizing makes it appealing to people who view it as an over sized trunk.
Exactly. Making solutions to problems that don’t even exist😂

I'm not sure what audience Munro is aiming for or hoping to educate, but do you want to be steeped in VAJ so you're only talking to engineers and academics or are you hoping to reach 12 year olds who might aspire to be future engineers and scientists? Btw (by the way), "VAJ" is an acronym I just made up. VAJ stands for Vernacular, Acronyms, and Jargon. ;-)
What prompted my comment was wondering what "palm" was, because the closed captioning typed it that way. I then figured out that you were probably using an acronym, likely "POM" which I looked up and learned that it was Polyoxymethylene, which is also known as acetal, polyacetal, and polyformaldehyde. It is an engineering thermoplastic used in precision parts requiring high stiffness, low friction, and excellent dimensional stability. It is often used in automotive parts, including various components in tonneau covers.

You failed to tell us how the Tonto cover handles rainwater.
Rivian's design is compact and clever. But was faulty. So hopefully the new gen 2 is a lot better
Kevin is a man of many words to share very little wisdom…and whats with the repeating that CTs tonneau cover solution is high cost & complex….it works brilliantly where Rivian’s fails to work.
It’s funny to hear guys that don’t do work with their truck guess what guys who do work with their truck would like or want
Can't wait to get some hatteras beach sand in that and see what happens
I'd rather bigger rollers or bearings, or just delrin slides,
And that's the diff between Tesla and Revian. Tesla streamline and keep things simple while Revian over complicates and why they are in the negatives.
I hear the term/word ''iconic'' is used way to many times, it is trying to justify the trucks inherent design, engineering and quality flaws, which there are plenty. Lets not forget Tesla is a established vehicle manufacturer, they know how to make a proper car, especially when the customers budget apparently is a 100k. The Cybertruck fell way short of what was promised, it is a 100k low quality novelty vehicle, form over function lets just all admit that and treat and judge it that way.
Most of Tesla cars are below $100K. Even the S plaid starts at $87,990. AFter the Foundation Series orders are filled CT's will fall $20K. Consider what the dealer markup would be on this truck if Ford or GM dealers were selling it. While you can't easily swap out the box there are arguably more people who will buy it because it the current configuration. Tesla is also arguably the only automaker making money on an electric pickup.
I wonder if in the future we’ll see a version of “cheaper” Cybertruck without the bed cover.

I was following a Cyber Truck in the late afternoon sun yesterday. One problem with the tonneau cover was the reflection off of it at the low sun angle.
Which one is going to be working after 200,000 or 400,000 miles. And yes, I expect the Cybertruck to EASILY last that long if not too much abusive happens to it in comparison to other trucks, liquid or solid (gas/diesel/battery) all told. I think that this cover will last with minimum number of them failing compared to the Rivian. It appears to me that Tesla tested this, opening and closing it, at least 100,000 times vs Rivian testing it maybe a few hundred times at most...
