Bon Jovi - Living On A Prayer - Isolated Vocals - Analysis and Tutorial - Recording Techniques
Sometimes rather than scratching a whole song entirely, it's better to see if you can rework it instead.
Such was the case for "Livin' On A Prayer" which Jon Bon Jovi apparently did not like the original recording of. Fortunately after some convincing by Richie Sambora, they decided to change the bassline, use new drum fills and add the use of a talk box.
I've got the actual isolated vocal track from the recording so we can look at how Jon got to those different places while hearing how the recording actually happened.
I'll also explore the engineering techniques that were used including the different types of reverb we'll hear in the recording.

@@kentamplin You are awesome Ken 👍
New to this page and was thinking the same exact thing. It's very cool.
What we love about it is character. He’s not a robot with perfect pitch and perfect technique. That’s why these bands were so huge, they connected with people, that’s infinitely more important than technique.
Patrick E 👍
agreed, health is wealth but in all aspects of human history, for big things to happen, we had to break rules, bounds, etc, and this is true when it comes to Jon's vocal technique. It's very obvious he never really took care of it which is really unfortunate but when I listen to the band, I feel as if, it was more about storytelling and conveying the emotion rather than technique and I respect that. That is probably the biggest reason people connected to them a lot. We can always play these what could have been games but would the song have the same effect with just proper vocal techniques used? I personally don't think so but we will never know. It's such a hard topic..... singing improperly on purpose to evoke emotions vs proper technique. I do wonder if a certain artist has achieved a balance between both.
He always sounded off key and strained to me. What I loved about someone like Dio or Rogers etc etc is that they had great pitch and control AND character and were just as huge. Not sure why someone with character but dodgy pitch and control would be as exciting. When Bon Jovi came along, I thought somewhat disappointedly they were the first wave of rockers that didnt have great singers, Motlery Crue and that whole hair band thing @@kentamplin
When I heard Bon Jovi's "Livin on a prayer" when I was 10 years old, I was fascinated. I sat in our living room at home and put on the vinyl single. I already got goosebumps from the beginning of the song with the keyboards and the mysterious atmosphere. And then Jon started with his smoky power voice. I had never heard anything like that before. I found it fascinating how high he could sing in this style. Of course I noticed even then that he could never sing the song live in this way. He allegedly didn't want to record the song at the time, because it was way too high for live performances. Now when I hear his voice isolated in Ken's video, I still think it's awesome. Though technically not perfect or an overproduced thin voice. Maybe it's the imperfection that creates the charm. Sometimes it just sounds awesome, because the voice has personality and touches you.
Jon never got the credit he deserved for his range or how great his voice was. The track Santa Fe off blaze is probably his best vocal. I'd love to hear that vocal isolated.
Great suggestion.
"Bed Of Roses" to me is his best ever vocal. The dynamics, range utilized and emotion in that song is head and shoulders above everything else IMHO.
Same thoughts here, i find 'Santa Fe' a mindblowing vocal performance. So powerful.
Seen bon Jovi many times in the 80s and he sucks live! Ritchie Sambora carried his ass live.
@@michaelbar570 look concerts on 85, Bradford in 86, Blaze of Glory in 91 at the Oscars, Good Guys Dont Always Wear White at 94 awards live. Jon started to sing live with much less power and technique after the SWW tour because he didnt want to have his voice shot again, he would only sing for real on short shows or just a one song performance. But yeah, Richie is also amazing and the soul of BJ along with Jon himself.
It's true he didn't have a good technique and that's what messed his voice up. But we can't deny, dude those songs and those vocals sound epic.
Indeed!
Agreed and he laughed all the way to the bank as well
What an underrated range though :)
Dude I never realized how much reverb was used (definitely not taking anything away from his vocals).
Love the fact that you brought up the emotion that comes from ‘true’ vocals without auto tune.
I have performed this song countless times and never knew how they recorded it in the studio. What an awesome breakdown. Thanks Ken!
Being from Jersey, and remembering that time when Bon Jovi broke, it was ALL about attitude, hair, and guitar chops. I am a singer and was always jealous of Jon hitting those insane high notes and then the key change at the end. I even tried to do it live once.it was not great, but as I listen to him today, it makes me sad to think, it was songs like this that robbed him of his voice today. I have always felt it was hard to be a vocalist, because you are always subject to your health, what you just ate, how much sleep you have had, etc. and the rest of the band, as long as they have their hands and a volume knob they are good! lol All I know is I feel his pain, having lost my voice on stage at big gigs.
This guy wins vocally on attitude, emotion and a surprisingly spectacular range - he’s also an incredible writer and marvelous story teller - PURE LEGENDARY GENIUS!
Well said!
Bon Jovi is my favorite band and hearing Jon's vocals isolated just...chills
Glad you enjoyed it, Jesse!
i read somewhere that Jon, every record, would sing at his peak ability in range and power. Which subsequently made all of it increasingly difficult to sing live as he aged. like "Always".
That makes sense, wildcat31772!
@@kentamplin For me that's one of the facts that made me mu favourite Band.
I agree with that. Jon always had a tendency to sing the songs live much more conservatively than on the record.
@@jrssww yeah, but he would sing just like the record before 86 (during the beginning of 86 too). He also would sing with his actual abilities when they had to just perform one song or short shows.
Ken is a singing Guru! If you stumbled accross this channel stay here, don't go elsewhere. His analysis is helping me record an electronic-songwriter EP as well as sing older classic rock songs before my time just for fun.
Thanks so much!
Ken has to be the only vocal teacher that gives me crucial information and that makes me choke on air from laughing too much at the same time 🤣, definitely can't wait to get the money saved up for his full lessons.
Jon Bon Jovi is a so special singer. I like his technique.
👍💜😀
Not a huge fan of his technique but he sure has a different sound
that technique killed his voice :D
suicidal technique by the way, but very powerful to my ears. One of my favorites singers.
Isn't there any way he can overcome this now ? I saw him just a couple years ago and his vocals live were touch-and-go.
Maybe he can train with a professional vocal coach ???
It's odd, but I've always noticed all of these punches and cuts throughout this song, but it's always "made it" for me. It makes it sound special and unique. Really cool stuff man.
I notice on the New Jersey album after this, he used a little more deeper style of singing. You can hear this the songs Lay your hands on me and Wild as the Wind. He also held notes longer on some songs at a lower key with the help more of Richie as a backup. He tested it out by saying "come on" a lot in his songs I've noticed and punching notes in songs. Like the album These Days, he used a lot of different deeper registers along with the high pitch notes, which doesn't get a lot of credit because the songs were getting more toned down. I always also thought his vocals in dry county on Keep the Faith were really underrated and uniquely good. One can totally see why singing live is a challenge for him and why he has always often chosen to sing much flatter live (or nowadays sadly not by choice).
Thanks for the analysis on his voice! Robert Plants is another one I have always found interesting - especially how he's changed his singing style in the middle of his early solo work in the 80s.
He sounds way more like Axl Rose than I'd ever realised! Obviously still very different, but closer than I'd have thought- great stuff Ken!
👍💜😀
That whispery tone he does is so awesome. Sounds so powerful especially on the bridge, cool how can do it with the small voice you were talking about
👍💜😀
Jon and Meat Loaf are singers who I wish got some training. They could have been so much more than they were, which is saying something. Would be interesting to see Sambora's vocal take on this. He carried this song in the high range for so long.
Could you do reactions to some of Richie’s live singing? He’s my all time favorite guitar player and a phenomenal singer. He’s also done well to preserve his voice!
Jesse Ledford Music 👍
Brutal song to sing. Sambora really helped a lot in the live shows with his wider range
For sure!
The video is well made and provides good information on the techniques used to record Bon Jovi's vocals for the song "Living On A Prayer". I also like that the author mentions that "UnMixIt" can be used to isolate vocals out of any song
Ken, that's a really informative and thorough vox analysis on an issue that's been questioned for decades. Glad you provided your expertise to learn about it.
I'll be damned, I've heard this song a million times, the isolated vocals who knows how many times, and you're right Ken - they did copy/paste the first and second choruses. I even checked the phase alignment, they almost cancel out... however they are minutely pitch/time shifted.
That said, Jon blew his voice out countless times and smoked for 15 years too - that didn't help his vocal longevity. But in his prime he was untouchable!!!
Surprise!
I suggest the copy paste chorus was for a reason, but not being lazy. This was their big hit single that broke the band worldwide I knew them in the uk from 7800 but it was a cult thing, this was about bringing a whole new unfamiliar audience to the band, with a 3.30 airplay single ...it worked good.
I'm a little late, but oh my goodness not only are jons lead vocals in this incredible, but the backing vocals are AMAZING. Especially during the key change at the end. I was never able to find out if it was Jon, Richie, or David doing the highest harmony, but i need to know ❤️ love your videos by the way.
Wow Ken!
This Format, never stop doing that, this is so great!
I mean you're already n impressive vocalist/vocal coach but you also know a lot about studio techniques and recording, it's so cool to share some of that with us.
I think this really unique, nobody does that, only Ken Tamplin!
Glad you enjoy it!
Ken, is amazing! This dude knows his stuff. I love these tear downs. This is my favorite channel. And yes he does respond to all his comments unlike other u tubers thank you for that
Another awesome video in this great series! Not only is if so interesting and informative, but also so entertaining! Love your sense of humour, Ken, and your little anecdotes that you share, it’s what makes this series particularly great and enjoyable.
Glad you are enjoying it!
Jon Bon Jovi tinha a voz mais potente que já ouvir de um cantor! 👋🏽👋🏽👋🏽 melhor vocalista de todos os tempos na minha opinião.
Damn I can't see anyone being able to carry that kind of vocal strain for too long. One of my favorite songs from the 80's
Jon has continuously said that he was against the key change towards the end of the song. Knowing that it would destroy the longevity of the ability to do it in key. Not only that, he didn’t even want to put the song on the album. It was Richie that convinced him to do so. Probably because of how difficult it would be to sing night after night. Any case, it’s a great song… Just not for singers. Not on a continuous basis. It’s an easy way to destroy your voice very quickly.
I know nothing about singing - this was a super fun video to watch I totally enjoyed it.
When jon recorded this song he was 24. You can hear the Jersey attitude come through, which I like plus he just goes for it alittle edge but that's Rock. It's a top rock song wouldn't want it any other way. It's a damn hard song to sing so congrats. Richie is tremendous singer more blue in his voice both work well together 🎤🎸
😊Thanks for listening!
During the These Days tour they opened with Living on a Pray and You give love a bad name. Which was epic, because they knocked out early and took the anticipation away to the point that you could enjoy the show more. Ken, you should do Dry County. That's such an underrated song.
Rock on!
My favourite Jovi song.
It amazing to watch and listen to these isolated tracks almost now and days you don’t hear a lot artists sing without auto tunes or some effect to make them sound better
Thanks for the visit!
Ken great analysis of what really happens in a studio! Especially in the days of recording to tape!
Rock on!
Ken ur an amazing talent. I appreciate hearing ur expertise on all of the songs u review. Bon Jovi is by far my favourite band and u are by far my favourite singing expert.
Thanks, Sheldon! Happy New Year! 🎉🥂🍾
Always makes me smile to remember that this song almost never saw the light of day. JBJ wanted to give it away to a compilation record rather than put it on their own album. Richie Sambora had to persuade him to put it on Slippery When Wet.
Thanks for the info!
I really enjoy your content. Great insights into these great artists and their performance styles. You are the singing teacher I wish I had 30 years ago! Cheers.
Thank you, Neil!
Mr. Tamplin, you are the best. Your videos are entertaining and so informative. Please keep them up!
Glad you like them!

Thank you, Jose!
Love your videos working on singing every day on your channel ❤️👊🏼
wow, few years ago I can still sing bon jovi songs while I got my tips mostly from Ken and I used to sing at school everybody loves it. When I got too busy with my life having a job, normal life, forgot about singing as if in my country almost everybody sings and I can't find it to be a good career. Now I thought about singing again but I lost the voice hoping to get help for it maybe a different exercise and now Ken again! so good to see it's almost a million subscriber! I'm glad to see you're still making tutorials Ken! Keep it up!
Thanks for the visit, Zombie! Keep on rockin'!
I really like how his voice isn't too perfect . there is some good emotion in the performance yea he really pushed it and I love that. good one ken
Glad you enjoyed it, Timothy!
I love these kind of vocal science evaluations. So interesting.

Love your videos and knowledge of vocals and recording tracks!
I appreciate that!

Thanks for listening, Fabian!
Iconic song. That's why he can still fill a stadium even though it sounds a bit like he's singing through a kazoo these days.
So true, Scott!
You're great Ken! i love Jon bon jovi very much!
😀👍
Your work is amazing. I really like the way you explain and entertain... Jon Bon Jovi is an icon, a dream to me.
I appreciate that, Inês~
Pretty cool stuff. I find it so interesting to watch along with guy like Ken with the technical chops to break these vocals down for us. Awesome Job. I feel like I'm right there with him.
Glad you're enjoying the series, Marco!
Bro thank you soooooo much for making this !!!! This is literally my personal anthem haha
Jon was definitely able to reach the notes in the studio...live was another story even back in the day. Just a tough tune. From things I’ve seen and heard, Jon wasn’t alone in not being able to hit every note live. Brad Delp and Boston had some trouble and Brad’s voice was otherworldly.
Rock on!
Loved this video Ken. You broke this down great to where we could understand what was happening. Thank you and great job.
Thanks, Jay!

You certainly have a grasp on the science of this. Good work Sir!
Love this. Thanks. Not sure what to comment that hasn't already been said except thank you so much for doing this incredible and interesting analysis. It explains a lot about how he sounds and sings.
👍💜😀
I liked that he sounded light and hard. Sounds contradictory but I love it. Very refreshing. Cheers teacher 👋😊 nice video

Love bon jovi he is great livin on a prayer was a big song and such a great song love it I can hear the reverb and the effect when he spoke it echoes when he speaks there's a lot of echo when he sings always loved bon jovi I can hear the boyish sound yes he was a little pitchy I heard that but the man can sing and he is a legend love how he sings his techniques are great thanks for walking through this showing how he does it and what he does with his voice Ken his echoes are pitchy but he is great live his rasp to 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

This video popped up on my channel because I am a big fan of Bon Jovi! I’ve been in three concerts and his voice is really damaged. And now, without Richie helping him, it’s not the same at all. I liked when you said that he sounds a cute Jersey boy...😁 Great job! I am Brazilian and I live in Ohio.

Wow, Ken you hit the nail on on the head. The Maestro in Washington, when I brought this song to him, said, specifically of this song, that if he kept singing like this this he would hurt himself. So, hats off to you that you said the exact same thing. Now for those of you that are reading this, the Maestro was one of the best vocal coaches around. He lived in this humble old house down by the water, it didn't look like much when I first got there. Walking into his home, where he did his lessons you saw all the autographed pics all over his walls with people thanking him. He was a bit overweight with his Santa Claus glasses, white hair slicked back, followed by a huge ponytail. Ok, I thought this ought to be good. Then we went over to the piano, it was a grand(i think a baby) it was so long ago I don't remember but the living room was small. He started doing scales accompanied on the piano, just to see where I was at, as well as to show me where I could or should be. He had a strong round voice. Then he hit this high note, I forget exactly the note but it was F*ing high, in his head voice, with little effort, and I was blown away. This guy could hit notes I could only imagine, this was around the time of guys like Michael Sweet, Jeff Tate and Rob Halford and had never seen anyone pull it off in person. The nicest guy. Anyway, in my opinion, I believe Ken is just as good if not better and I would go to him in a heartbeat if I was still singing or wanted to sing. Ok, I'm rambling but if Ken reads this, I believe he can attest to this story and can tell you its true and the only way you would ever know this, is if you had been in his (the Maestro) home. So, in a long winded round about way, I'm saying that Ken is the new, and our modern day Maestro. I believe he is the best. I'm 53yrs, was a studio musician in Vancouver (drummer) and I left that and joined the military. (RET 26years in) I wish you all the best with your singing endeavors. God bless.
👍💜😀
I was in a hair metal tribute band out of Detroit called RockStar from 09-2014.
Our singer Kelley Huff used to nail this like it was nothing.
I remember my first gig with them was at the Machine Shop in Flint, MI. I remember when were doing our sound check, and it was his turn... It was scary good!
Awesome!
Great analysis of a classic song!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing video Ken have a great day brother God Bless & merry Xmass boy

Deam , Jon have a amazing voice😳😳😳
Is a big singer 👏🏻
Hey, love these videos you've been putting out with the isolated vocals. And your feedback on the vocals is super cool and really helpful. So thank you!
Could you do one of these on something by Tool? That would be amazing and I'm pretty sure there are vocal-only tracks available for a few of their songs online. If possible Right in Two would be so awesome. If not, Parabol/Parabola, Schism, H. or 46&2 are all great songs with epic vocals on them.
Glad you like them! I'll see what I can do!
Oh my God.. I'm a guitar player who can't sing at all (which bothers me all the time), but still I love Ken Tamplin's videos so much, I can't stop watching him analyse all the songs I grew up with. It's interesting, fascinating, entertaining and inspiring, all at the same time.
How nice!
Nice tutorial sir ken.ive been singing this with my band.i think i have to make some changes the way i perform it so as not to overstress my vocal chord .thanks for the lesson.God bless.
Glad it was helpful!
Any chance you do Joe Elliot like this? Maybe not someone you immediately think of when discussing incredible rock singers with larger than life voices (Steven Tyler, Sebastian Bach), but Def Leppard owned the late 80s. And his voice was definitely a big part of that. Or even do some analysis of the harmonies they created and those huge choruses. Thanks for the great content!
I just might!
Bon Jovi is great, because he sounds like he sounds and that's why he's a amazing Rock Singer 🤘🏻
Rock on!
I don't even to listen to the video to press the like button...
Love ya, Ken! Love this era of music too.
I'm a drummer that always liked singing, and have been told I'm ok, but absolutely hate my voice. Just easier to work with singers I like around town, and one in across the country.
Thanks for all the work you do!
Thanks, danlc95!
Love your videos and I think this shows how great of a singer JBJ is. He's not afraid to strip it down or even do a capella
For sure.
Bon Jovi is super over-hated in my opinion. One of my favorites
😊 Thanks for listening!
Well he is a Huge Clinton supporter... earning the hate 🤣🤣🙊😣🤡😉
I agree his vocals on Sante fe, something to believe in and some of the non 80’s he’s really belting and he changed his style from early 80’s to mid to late 80’s or even the 90’s.
