One of the things that was so unique about Frank Sinatra was that he was the master of ad-lib and never sang the same way twice. He would use different phrasing or a different note choice each time he sang.
What other singers can you think of that could just rearrange a melody on the spot like that? Let me know in the comments!
I’ve got Frank’s isolated vocal track from “Fly Me To The Moon” and we’re going to take a look at his unique phrasing and the way he used a lot of ebb and flow in his sound.
As we explore the recording we’ll be hearing an actual orchestra in the background, with Frank singing on top of it, all live. I’ll also show you how to add some subtle effect to help Frank dominate the track over the band.

Frank Sinatra was my dad's favorite singer. My dad would go around the house singing one of Frank's songs. When my dad ended up with dementia and had to be put in a nursing home it would get hard to talk with dad - so I would find Frank Sinatra song and play it & dad and I would sing ( communicate) together.

A love that while Sinatra was clearly a baritone, his voice didn’t sound “dark”. He always sounded like he was enjoying to sing.
I mean darkness or brightness is more of a technique thing rather than range/tessitura
That depended on the song, my friend. He would change the tone of his voice to reflect the meaning of this song. He would go from a snappy, bright charismatic, rich vocalist for happier songs, to a classical singer for romantic or emotionally moving songs, to dark and sad themes .
When I was a kid, I used to think Sinatra kind of talked instead of sung. As I've got older, I really appreciate the silky smoothness and the loudness of his voice.
It's interesting to note, that when Frank was younger, his style was based heavily on Bing Crosby. This is interesting for a couple of reasons. Bing crosby was the first guy to get out infront of the band and sing close to the mic. Before that, the voice was just another instrument with a part written out. Bing made it personal, romantic, colloquial. Frank when he was younger he had a pretty high voice, so his singing style was more about sounding pretty. As his voice dropped, just like Bing's did and it became more about personality. The voice was not longer just a part, it was the main focus. It's funny thinking on terms of us being young, bing was around until 77, frank about twenty years later... modern singing has a short lineage. The other part that's interesting was this conversational style, wasnt reliant upon dynamic range, it was about selling the song and not a pretty melody.

Yeah, Bing got far less stiff as a singer and personality from the '30's forward. He probably had so much success by then, that people just accepted whatever he did.
Russ Columbo and Nick Lucas should not be left out of any discussion of American Crooners. They were contemporaries of Bing and even predated his popularity in some ways.
I can hear a little Dean and Bing in Elvis… maybe a little Mario Lanza on Its now or never…

Great observations
The Voice, The coolest cat that ever walked the earth. One of a fell that puts you into the song and grabs your heart. His timing was so amazing that he could put the groove wherever he wanted. Untouchable till this day. Basically a 1 take wonder. Legend says that he had to do "Thats life "3 times and he was pissed! Produced kept the take number 3. Many men tried the " Sinatra thing"all of them failed.

Frank's The Man and his vocals are the best. But I believe even he admitted that Dean Martin was a cooler cat in his prime.
Sinatra used many arrangers, not just one. I think you were referring to Nelson Riddle who he worked with the most, but didn't work with in the last few decades. This was arranged by Quincy Jones with the Count Basie band.
Nobody compares to Riddle as arranger, but Frank's best director was Billy May, and some rare time himself!!!( don't forget gorgeous Stordhal and Jenkins, please)
Ken, you brought me to tears on this one. I sang many of my mom’s favorite songs to her for a couple of days while she was bedridden before she went to heaven and Fly Me to the Moon was one of them. I brought the lyrics up on my cell phone, tried my best and she hummed along with me. I miss her very much. She will have been gone 5 years on Feb. 24th (and I’ll be sober for 7 years on that date). 🙏💘 🌙

I like these recordings of Frank with the isolated vocals, in some ways better than the originals. You can really hear his technique much more clearly.

There is some amazing aspect about Frank's phrasing. In phrases like "Fly Me!" and "Let Me Play!" he is very confident and in the end of a phrase he is so gentle and romantic. Frank proposes, even demands: Flah-yy me! Llllet me play! Then he kinda politely explains where he wants to be flown and where he wants to play.
Frank’s singing voice was the same as his speaking voice. That’s why it was so effortlessly for him. He had that deep chest voice. He didn’t tried to do some crazy falsetto out of his range just for show. He did everything right. Just perfection.
PS: please, do some Elvis gospel stuff in the 72-up era. It should be cool.

The truth is, there is hardly any difference between our speaking and singing voices. They are the same. Singing sustains our speech . To go against your speaking voice is what leads to vocal issues.
Frank Sinatra took several lessons from voice coach John Quinlan when he was just starting out, and that led to a collaboration with Quinlan on a beginner guide book for aspiring singers titled “Tips on Popular Singing” which was published in 1941.
Frank Sinatra also studied voice with expert in the physiology of vocal sound projection Judy Davis and consulted her for problems in the 1950s and again in the 1970s.
Gregory Peck once asked Frank Sinatra to recommend a good voice teacher for his son Anthony-Sinatra sent him to see Seth Riggs.
Frank Sinatra also suggested to Roger Moore that he send his son Geoffrey to study with Seth Riggs.
I’m Jeff’s wife commenting on Frank Sinatra... I was 18 years old and saw him live in the Saber room Chicago... A-mazing... I was with my mother who was about everything Frank ( blue eyes)... I tried to sneak up to his room during his break to get his autograph, totally not planned. I was coming back from ladies room and saw he and his body guards heading up the stairs, so I thought “ what could it hurt” 😂🤣😱 I went to top of stairs and towards the room I him enter and BAM, this HUGE guard went nuts asking me what the *#** I was doing up there. Said I wanted an autograph for my mom. He immediately escorted me down the stairs with a warning to never do that again, as I could be shot😱. Hey, I was a cocky 18 year old from Chicago who wanted a harmless autograph of a lifetime.... so I asked the bodyguard to get it for me and I would wait at bottom of the stairs.... 😇. He laughed and said, you got B@lls for a sweet little young lady and escorted me back to my seat

You have no idea how connected he was. Saw the Rat Pack at the Sands in Vegas in the early 70's. A group of us stayed at Ceasars Palace and went to dinner and the Rat Pack walks in. No security. They sat two tables away. There were 12 of us Frank overheard us talking and said you guys from Jersey? We said absolutely. Anyway got pictures with all of them. Very down to earth and all were gentlemen. Lots of great memories. They are all gone now. We were honored that they interacted with us. Total class all of them!

You mentioned Sinatra's phrasing....On one of Sinatra's albums he talks about how Tommy Dorsey taught him about phrasing, breath control and breathing in general. He credits Dorsey a lot.
Sinatra not only had a good voice, but his attitude took him far.

Every musician in those days at that level had to be sharp and first class and he was the guy right at the top of that...he was the glue and more.
They all did a long hard apprenticeship and only the cream of the crop survived.
When the clock struck for the kick ...there was nowhere to hid or say sorry etc.... that super G you hit at home or on rehearsal didn’t mean a thing if you fluffed it live.
That was the sophisticated world he moved in..... the dancing...the whole art form was superb......
He will forever be in my soul.......

The reason i took up singing more seriously as i was a guitarist primarily.
I was singing along back in the day, about 92 lol as my mum was a huge fan, and was confused that i could manage this but not the rock, metal style i was so into, still am to this day, but this style really opened things up musically for me, as i'm a baritone.

I wasn't that keen of Frank Sinatra, until they started playing "Nice 'n' Easy" on an advert in the UK. I got hooked and bought a greatest hits CD. His songs sound much better on headphones to me. His timing is great.

Thanks Ken! Fantastic. Frank could sing right on the beat and still swing like crazy...playing with Basie helps, of course. Nelson Riddle is often the conductor. With Basie, it was probably Quincy Jones, who also wrote these arrangements for Basie and Frank. Frank rarely did more than a few takes. Frank learned to breathe from Tommy Dorsey (trombone). The phrasing is deeply influenced by jazz players and singers (e.g. Frank loves Billie Holiday). This was recorded in the early 60s, Frank helped open up Vegas to black performers. Frank often recorded before an audience in the studio - he needed the energy of the audience and he needed the audience for the "conversation" that you mention Ken... That ending has Count Basie setting up Frank with a classic Count ending (Frank could not, as far as I know, read music...but he could listen). Nice effect in the re-edit - it gives it an enhanced "Jupiter and Mars" kind of groove. Thanks too for letting us hear more clearly the great Freddie Green on guitar... How about an analysis of Tony Bennett singing "If I Ruled the World" - and then another Jersey cat, Bruce Springsteen!

The 1960s was an amazing era of music. Swing music, and Sinatra in general, was at its peak of greatness; the Beatles made their debut, and it was the birth of the classic rock era, along with the greatest R&B songs ever made. Most people just call it Motown music (although Motown was just a record company). It was the best. Not to mention those fun 60s bubblegum songs by the monkeys, hermits hermit, and so on.

Frank’s pre rupture voice was totally different than his older voice. The other thing I really like about Frank is you can’t hear him take a breath. He practiced so that would be silent. Love the old crooners!

An absolute powerhouse of a singer, the man could really swing. I loved your insight into his vocals, not many videos about Sinatra’s voice which is a shame but thank you! You should listen to him sing “All or Nothing At All” from his strangers in the night album or “River Stay’ Way From My Door” from his Come Swing With Me album, he really swings it like a mad cat, the second song shows off Sinatra getting loose and opening up that upper range he would seldom use but was damn impressive. I recorded a record with JJP in 2003 at Ocean Way and learned that Frank tracked many of his records in that same A-room. It was so great to spend so much time there and learn the history that happened right there in the same room we were in. This is one of my favorite tunes he did. I know it backwards and forwards. He did love to sing with that dotted 8th swing. I started my daughter with Frank and The Beatles and she was playing the swing groove and singing at age 3! Thanks for doing this one! 😊🎶🎙🤟

Yea autotune wasnt even invented until i believe 1990. in Franks day there was no digital effects there was analog parametric equalization and frequency pass filtering at a basic level and that was about it.
@@sociald100 effect isn't just autotuning if I'm not mistaken effect can be things that the Beatles did, I'm sorry for my poor explanation but I just don't want to leave you being dumb or leave myself being dumb, so if I'm wrong please tell me.
There was a lot of freedom in his singing and phrasing. He was behind the beat purposely with his hesitation and pronunciation. That “drag” in the singing was the difference to me. It was cool. It was swinging.
To me, he was almost a rock singer. As much as Elvis. Especially as he hit his early 40s and 50s. He was loose with extraordinary tone and thickness like he was double tracked. The one and only Frank Sinatra.

Song is Fly Me To The Moon, from the 1964 Album It Might As Well Be Swing, the band was the Count Basie Orchestra and the composer and conductor is Quincy Jones, What I love about this album is that Quincy wrote this with his own style of swing, the Basie band brought it to life while also influencing the songs with their own style, then there’s Mr. Francis A. Sinatra, basically injecting himself into the music making it oh so much magnificent just singing as if telling a story

Most my life I have hated the sound of "crooning" but now I'm able to appreciate it more and enjoy it. I guess it was just too stylized for me to enjoy. It's just too over the top. I loved Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire probably because they could dance so well.

Also I love this analysis, I've been learning how to sing for a year now and I've got a really deep voice, Sinatra is one of the first people I could sing without braking my voice with a higher pitch and this will help me a lot

Frank Sinatra came from a non-autotune era of capable musicians and vocalists.....but he was the MAN. It's cool that you have done a lot in your careers but you still appreciate greatness. For his part, Mr. Sinatra admired talents and wanted to work with the best. He really admired Dino and Tony and said they were better singers than himself.

Ken... I love this series. These lessons are like a drink of water to a parched throat. Perhaps in future episodes...could you play the entire song with the isolated track at the end? With all the info you give us, it would be wonderful to apply all you have shown us each episode and listen to the entire track. Thanks for these videos!!!

Great video Ken! In my wheelhouse now! Love the smooth, suave style of the crooners! Nothing like the sound of recording vocals live with an orchestra; it's a bygone time that we won't see again. Have Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, Vic Damone and Ella Fitzgerald on vinyl in steady rotation in my home. Again, thanks for the great video and looking forward to the next one.
