  • In this video we do an ISOLATED VOCALS takedown of Bon Jovi's BAD MEDICINE! Watch Now!
Bon Jovi - Bad Medicine - ISOLATED VOCALS - Analysis and Singing Lesson
Desmond Child who co-wrote “Bad Medicine” with Bon Jovi, has said that the trio was a particularly focused band who mostly stayed away from drugs and other temptations because their work was so important to them.
What other bands can you think of that followed that same path and have enjoyed such longevity as a result? Share with me in the comments?
In this video we’ll look at the different elements that make this song so interesting and catchy,
including the quarter note rhythm groove that Jon does on the vocals.
We’ll see how each part of the song has its own unique, composed vibe to it and we’ll explore how Jon masterfully used breath control to sing a whole lot of lyric with very little breath.
    Check it out!

Jon lead vocals, Richie Sambora backing vocals n the duet, but David Bryan's background vocal is great too... This harmonies form Bon Jovi's "sound"...

Desmond Child had a huge impact here. As a matter of fact a lot of bands of that era had to write with him.

I think what set Bon Jovi apart from others of their peers at the time was the band's vocal harmonies, which you can hear not only on this song, but especially on "Born To Be My Baby" for example: Jon Bon Jovi sang the leads, Richie Sambora sang the harmonies, Alec John Such sang the falsettos, David Bryan sang the second backings, and Tico Torres sang the low vocals. I'm sure when they did "New Jersey" they realised it was their trademark, so they searched long to find another big bombast chorus like "Bad Name" or "Prayer". You can tell they found it, because whenever they play this song live, they always add at least one chorus and let the crowd sing it 😉.

I met Bon Jovi on their UK leg of Slippery When Wet tour in Ipswich 1983 or 4, oppps ( date not correct it was 1985!) after the gig back at the hotel we were partying, Ritchie Sambora played me Bad Medicine for the first time. I started to sing a long with the track just humming the melody, Jon was shocked that I picked up the melody straight away he was shocked and was not happy he thought someone had already played me the song because I picked up the melody first time….. ha those were the days!!! Love your videos Ken💜💜💜

Yep dates are a fuzz but yep UK tour was very early on in this bands world tour of Slippery when wet tour and Bad medicine was the tour later but the track was already demo ready as I was played it by Ritchie Sambora in Ipswich. Cudos to your fact check dates! Like I say it was fuzzy remembering the dates! I was a recording artist back then before meeting Brian Robertson of Thin Lizzy and being together a lifetime and having our dear son Logan Robertson. But yes everything is true fact but dates…. err sorry!!!

@@acason4 yep I just replied to your info, thanks for that yes your dates are correct, the bad medicine was demo but a finished track even that early on on slippery when wet tour! Ipswich was the gig and I was played the demo by Ritchie back on his sound system in his hotel room after the gig! 💜💜💜

Ken, you are just as entertaining to watch as listening to Jon sing these lyrics! The part where Jon says “shake it up”, and you do your little shake, reminds me of the Bad Medicine video where the girl in the audience does the same little “shake” you do... makes me think that you were playing the video in your head while going through this song?!?? It’s what I was doing!! Again, this video was quite entertaining!! 💕✨

I saw Bob Jovi at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo as my wife loved him and I must admit the performance was one of the best I’ve ever seen and they sung it just like was on the recordings. I couldn’t believe how good he was.
He also did this thing where he would take a long lap on foot while playing the guitar and shake alot of fans hands (mostly girls and women) but he came across as such a genuine guy.

I witnessed MANY things on this tour believe me. This track was played to me by Ritchie Sambora in his hotel room. He wanted my opinion before it’s add to the album. I got the track so quick he was shocked how I sang along when I’d never heard it before … but it’s predict was easy! Anyway I do 💜 this track. Re the breath yes great but him singing this the way he did burnt his voice because he is not a natural rasp. 💜💜💜

I watched Frank Stallone’s documentary recently and Richie Sambora used to play sometimes with Stallone’s band. It’s weird how the gritty and down to earth bands in the east coast (From Philly, Jersey, to Boston) simply gave us deep lyrics and unique riffs. By breaking down this great song, I can hear that east coast sound.

Yes Ken, I for one remember the Paul is dead rumor from over 50 years ago! Me and a friend of mine were obsessed with finding/interpreting clues in lyrics and in some cases hearing messages when certain lines were played backwards. And although Paul appeared to still be alive and well it was obvious that he had been replaced by a lookalike!! 🤣🤣🤣

    • @rwieber79
      @rwieber79 2 роки тому

The funny thing is you still see it every once in awhile on the internet that the real Paul died in a car wreck back then and the Paul now is body double/clone. It's crazy how so many of these things seem to live on for years and years afterwards. I still see people on Facebook in certain groups that sware Elvis did not die in 1977 and is still alive today and in Witness Protection. Then there's the 2PAC still alive stories and the most recent one I guess is Micheal Jackson. It's funny how the majority of all the conspiracies like these are with musicians.

Great video Ken. As always. There's one thing though that I wished you had touched on. There's an interesting arrangement when it comes to the stacking of vocals in the chorus. On the second "Bad Medicine," they add harmony which isn't there on the initial part of the chorus. This is also an interesting way to give a chorus a little bit of a lift. Anyway, this is one of those great rockers with some links to the past in the guitar work. One last thing... I agree with your version of the phrasing in the verses as well.

Any chance you could do an iso analysis on probably the best band to ever break out of South Florida: Saigon Kick? They were heavily influenced by the Beatles and their group harmonizing (especially on their first two albums) really set them apart from all of the other hair/glam metal bands active at that time imho. I cant believe I never noticed how similar the guitar lick and sound is to Money for nothing. On a side note I've also never been able to figure out how he gets those harmonics in the money for nothing lick. I've seen tabs for it that are all different and some say its pinch harmonics, some say natural harmonics which is what it sounds like to me and ofcourse some of the tabs dont show any harmonics in the lick at all. Just one of those funny things I guess, ive always loved both songs. I dont remember when money for nothing came out but I it all over MTV in around 85 or 86 when I was 6 or 7 years old and I remember getting the Bon Jovi album on vinyl which I still have and Bad Medicine was one of my favorite songs on it instantly. Luckily I had a cool mom that was into rock so she let me get the albums of the bands I was seeing on MTV and hearing on the radio.

Can you analyze the rise and fall of Jon’s voice? I love Jon, but I’d like to know what you think happened, whether it was smoking or overtouring.

I think Ken would be shocked to hear present time jbj vocals.

I had read that he was possibly using steroids to keep his voice up during tours. I don't know if this is the case, but once I heard it, I've never forgotten. It does make sense. I've seen them in concert 4 times...the last time in 2010-ish and it wasn't great and the high notes were painful... (but I enjoyed every minute anyway) and these days it's really rough. The keys that he sings in are high and I imagine with wear and tear, age and singing every night, the rigors of touring etc and singing in those crazy high keys that his voice was bound to give out.
I was hoping for more on, as you called it "the rise and fall" as well. Frankly, that's why I tuned in. I was super curious about what Ken thought. Also, I didn't know he was a smoker.

Ha, it's interesting about your take with the more soul/funk like phrasing. That's exactly what I would do too, because I've always loved R&B, soul and funk along side metal.Which I brought to the table when making metal songs. Its gotta "get down" hard, and not just "rock". They gotta stripper anthems of the 80s, man. It's like the true school blues. But with crazier hair

Not my favorite song of Bon Jovi, maybe because I listen to their stuff every day and heard it too often, but i can't imagine how hard it must be to sing this song in the middle of a 2-3 hour concert. Would you ever do a review of Santa Fe by Bon Jovi? I think that's a really hard song to sing with some interesting story too

He sounds like James Brown on the "I gotta...I gotta do it again, wait a minute" part. BTW I bet he never sang it like that live. With all due respect, I bet he dropped some words and altered it. He might have just let the audience and the rest of the band sing the chorus hook to save his voice. You just can't compare how you'd sing in the studio doing one song a day to how you'd sing for over 2 hours night after night. His voice was awesome! Even in the studio the breath control is breathtaking! Great stuff!
