      I agree Finn, their is a lot unfair criticism on Christians in the media and towards Christian bands in general because they don’t fit the narrative of the woke society in the United States today. You have gotten me in to so many different bands to listen to, I really appreciate that. I also love watching your channel keep on rocking it out.

    Creed was my oldest sister's favorite band, she played their first album on repeat when she bought. In October of 1998 she fell asleep at the wheel, wrecked her car into a telephone and later died from her injuries. At her funeral one of her friends, who found her and reported the crash, told us that her stereo was still playing that album when he called 911. So because of my need to feel closer to her Creed became one of my favorite bands and their music really helped me get though one of the most difficult times of my life. Them and Linkin Park, who i had discovered shortly after her death, kept me sane while my family and life as i knew it fell apart. I didnt know or care what was going on behind the scenes because i was 13 and just needed an outlet for the shitstorm I was going through. But looking at it today I think you are right about the critics and why the were being unfair towards them.

      Thank you guys, it has gotten somewhat easier over time, there is so much more to this story I could write a book, seriously. But the most important part was that my mom was able to get custody of my nephew (who was 2 at the time) and she finally worked up the courage to divorce my dad ( was an alcoholic and would get violent towards her at times). That put a lot of responsibility on me and my other older sister but we all stuck together and we made it work the best we could. My nephew is grown now and doing well. I just recently gave him a trunk full of his moms things that i had been saving for him and that was very emotional but he is grateful to have any peice of her he can get. I truly admire my mom so much for her strength and perseverance during what was the hardest point in her life. What she went through was far worse than anything i was going through. Looking back now that I am a parent myself and about the age she was when all of this happened... I don't know how she did it without completely loosing her shit. I mean she still had 2 teenage daughters and a grandson to raise with no real help from anyone beside us. I probably should write a book about it. My mom deserves some recognition and who knows it may inspire others who are facing similar challenges. 🤔 Creeds music definitely triggers some real emotions and memories for me and my family. But i am glad i had their music and Linkin Park's to cling to during that time.

Can’t say that about many of the jerk offs in the entertainment world who continue to play victim or treat things like they weren’t that big of a deal. Sure do hope him and Mark will put things aside, other projects and feelings, and make a comeback with creed. For a new album, and/or just some good tours. Can this really be happening in 2022? A person with a large media platform being compassionate and generous in their interpretation of someone's actions?? Wild. • @bEnderOfWorlds
      @bEnderOfWorlds 2 роки тому

      Being compassionate is fine. So is calling a mediocre band out for making pappy, trite, generic music. Personality and behavior of their faux-Christian front man aside, Creed makes Nickleback seem talented and interesting. I was also there for the coma-inducing bummer that was Creed on every other radio station and TV commerical for about a year. Their music is exactly the kind of fake, artless, heartless, crap that American corporations can use to express their superficiality and lack of commitment to anything but commercially safe, soulless music that belongs in a grocery store specifically for traumatic head injury patients, as they are the only people who could ever hear a Creed song and unironically say, "This is my jam!"
      I've run in to these poor souls on occasion, and listening to them try to string more than 4 words together in an effort to explain how, "They really sing from the heart and I love how the singer tries so hard to be Eddie Vedder" is as sad as it is hilarious. Bring that "Mouth full of marbles" bullshit back! Lmao.

      @@bEnderOfWorlds hmm, this is the most nauseating comment in all of Internet history. Creed served a niche. The only thing that matters in music is to connect with an audience and they did that. No twat in the UA-cam comments can take that away from them.

    • @shaunspalding286
      @shaunspalding286 Рік тому +2

      @@bEnderOfWorldsthis attitude is exactly the type of thing that he was trying to criticize. Mediocre art that people connect to can be critiqued but it doesn't need to inspire the type of simmering hate that your comment suggests. "Bad" art is art that is condescending, art that is hateful, etc. There will always be commerical, uninspired, lazy work and there will always be people who despite that, or because of that, enjoy it. I think it's a big sign of maturity and one reason why I really enjoy these videos is because he doesn't criticize people for liking the things that they like.
      I don't really like Creed, but my dad sincerely sent me the song "With Arms Wide Open" because he thought it reminded him of when I was a baby. That is real sentiment and it seems inappropriate to take that away from someone by saying the emotion they took from a piece of art isn't real.

It's just being hateful and condescending.

    As a kid you get sucked up by criticism. You go with the so-called "norm" cause you don't want to fall victim to the same hatred, and struggle to find your own opinion. Not only with music, but with people, clothing, your personal views, varying if it were religious or sexual preference. The world can be extremely cruel and it's hard to form your own opinion without fearing of backlash. The enjoyment I felt when you ended the video by telling people to take a step back, and ask themselves "why" they would hate or criticize, something or someone, brought a tear to my eye. This video was very beautifully made and it went into depth of the entirety of their rise and fall. I grew up listening to a lot of Creed and that uncle was the one who first taught me how to play guitar.
    After he passed, I went through a phase of relistening to Creed all over again.
    He absolutely loved ‘Higher’ and ‘Arms with open’. I remember staying up a couple of nights trying to learn those songs on the guitar just to go show him the next weekend.

    Thank you for being so respectful and understanding towards Scott as an artist and as a human being. I was introduced to creed at an early age by my father, that was his way of getting me to better understand him and his struggles with his faith and the world he lived in. When he would play With Arms Wide Open, he'd breakdown into tears explaining to me, all that he ever wished for was for my older sister and I to not end up like him, that hopefully he could only ever give us the best parts of himself as a parent. Today at the age of 23 I empathize so much with both Scott and my father because I too struggle to better myself both as a person on earth and a servant under Christ. Christian or not I believe all of us can understand that sometimes the battle isn't always human, our biggest battle is within. Scotts lyrics really hits home for those who cant and don't know how to verbally describe this pain of the constant struggle of wanting to better ourselves but always seeming to fall short. I love Scott and applaud him for just being human.

As it turns out he was a complete hypocrite. THAT is why I find it hilarious. Just like these politicians who told everyone to lock down during the pandemic and stay home then come to find out their going on vacations with their family to Mexico or throwing Christmas office parties for them and their staff. Before I became a Christian I was a big metal head, and later got more into grind and crust punk. In those years all I ever heard from many of the bands and people I hung out with was how bad Christianity is. They had a lot say against Christianity but hardly ever anything against other religions. Many would claim that their inverted crosses are a symbol of being against all religions. Yet the emphasis was always against Jesus and Christianity.
    I'm now a born again Christian and can only look back and see how that for these bands and people Christianity is a easy target due to core doctrines in our faith, turn the cheek, pray for those who persecute you, love your enemies, if your enemy is hungry give him something to eat. Etc. True Christians believe the Bible and will be obedient to it.
    Where many other religions will fight you physically. Now its easy for me to debate these people as they are usually completely ignorant when it comes to the bible and Christian doctrine.
    Matthew 5:43-45
    “You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I (Jesus) say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

      Higher is my favorite and lots of people I know if you say Creed that song comes up being memorable.
      Remember being in a trailer for a cartoon that revolves around future and living in space and it's exploration,
      nothing about that ever screamed Christianity or anything even close to it.
      It was more about technology, science and the characters as in what they will utilize it for and the song covered the story very well.
      Who ever picked it did a great job.
      And it's a great example to some songs work well for anything you put atop of it. Also can be taken out of context hence why they got the backlash.
      Even tho I wouldn't expect anything less from a typical brainwashed western person, judging negatively anything that isn't formal to their way of a flawed life.
      USA was built on coruption and parasitic practices and they still to this day do this. Even their church is corrupt no matter what religion we speak of, lots of them are just bad political movements and serve the evil. Granted there are good ones too just like people buy sadly its a minority.
      Hatred and judging you don't know nor don't want to know about is a norm. If a TV or typical clickbait garbage website tells you something is bad you take it for a fact and just hate upon it.
      This band being hated is just another thing on a list of a westerner to hate, since when they hate themselves they equally can't like anyone or anything else. Even if they do say they like something, they lie.

(And now I feel about people hating AJR.) When I was in middle school, I don't think I could have related to an album as much as I did Weathered. The melodrama in the writing matched my internal world so well, because everything feels so heightened at that age. Scott is cheesy, perhaps, but I agree that he was always pointing the finger at himself, and it made his writing so brutal and fascinating. Plus, I remember trying to learn guitar by playing the lick at the start of "One Last Breath" and realizing how amazing a guitar Mark Tremonti was. Loved this video, Finn. Tremonti has been my “guitar hero” ever since I heard “My Own Prison” and “Torn”. I liked Creed when they came out, but it’s Alter Bridge where I feel like the band has really shined; though they haven’t had the success they did as Creed. I think that is unfortunate, and is a by product of the stigma that Creed had. I agree 1000% with how you closed this out. Well done.

    Amazing video. Creed were my favourite band and even today as a 40-something who doesn't really have a "favourite band" id still say creed because of the impact they had on my life. I've never met Scott but I've met and worked with mark and the AB guys many many times over a period of several years and they are honestly some of the nicest and most humble individuals I've come across in the industry. They say never meet your heroes, but I did and I became buddies with them and they didn't disappoint.

    I loved Creed when I was in elementary school. Never cared for all the other post-grunge bands, Creed's music always sounded a lot more earnest than the music released by their counterparts. It's weird the way Christian rock artists got shit on as if they were the same monolithic force of domination in rock music that Christian conservatives were in government. A lot of my favorite bands were Christian, and I was surprised by how their messages were a lot closer to "Hey this is something that worked for us, you can take it or leave it" than "If you're not one of us you're not welcome and will be tortured in hellfire for eternity after a life of marginalization from mainstream society"

    Another great video as always! Thank you so much for the ending bit where you address some of the unfair criticism. Especially the Christian band thing. As a musician who has played in several Christian bands, it's discouraging to see so many people immediately write a band off due to their lyrical content. I think we all listen to music that features lyrics that we don't always agree with, but most of us are open minded enough to enjoy it for what it is and roll with it, even if on occasion the lyrics don't line up with our personal beliefs. I think Stapp's lyrics were always more geared towards his personal struggles and how he found strength to endure, not forcing people to believe exactly what he believes. Again, great stuff. Thanks for all your hard work!

Also, understanding the meaning of "Arms Wide Open" and being a father myself does give me an appreciation for that song, as like many fathers, the birth of my son was the greatest moment of my life and my main focus to work through my own struggles with depression and anxiety.

    One huge important detail that was left out here--Scott on top of his trauma also had an underlying bipolar disorder that went undiagnosed until well AFTER his psychotic breakdown in 2014, meaning not only did he have to contend with the rehab situation but then had to retroactively examine his behavior under the lens of someone with this condition and how that exacerbated everything and then make the decision to MEDICATE himself AFTER having gone sober. Imagine living 20 years of your life with depressing and substance abuse issues, finally coming clean of it all and feeling totally free, and then having a doctor tell you "by the way you also need to start taking these other drugs again if you want to stay on the level" after having already been lied to by so many other doctors throughout his life like the Wind-Up Records' recommended physician who had put him on opioids to keep him touring. People make fun of him because it's easy but honestly the man wakes up every day and has to make a hard choice just to be able to feel somewhat normal as a human being, let alone continue working hard to pursue musical success. I defy anyone to live that kind of life and not be more successful than he was in his suicide attempts.

      Their first album drew lots of comparisons to Creed. If I remember correctly, a significant portion of it had already been written before Myles Kennedy had joined the band, so he had less influence on it. The entire band progressed very rapidly in terms of sheer talent, technicality, and creativity from there, which is why their sound became more much more refined and distanced from Creed goin forward. It also shows in the solo careers of Kennedy and Tremonti.

    I really appreciate your perspective on the "Christian" component you spoke about at the end in this one. Although it isn't exactly the same, as a Christian in the Hardcore scene I often times find myself feeling the same sentiment you expressed - about how we wouldn't go out and bash a Muslim Band and yet Christian groups/ ideals take a lot of heat, in particular in the Hardcore scene. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that Christians in the scene are squeaky clean. Time and time again, I have found that the bands/ people who claimed to be Christians, very often were just using it as a means to market themselves and/ or are some pretty awful people (with a handful of exceptions of course). And it's really frustrating when you think about how these groups/ people are a representative of people like myself in the scene, people who don't really align with these so called Christians despite being a Christian. It also just feels weird when things like Straight Edge/ Veganism are praised and in essence serve as a form of Religion within the scene but we don't have Songs about how Edge/ Vegan folks are foolish, etc. Overall, another great video with a really interesting perspective my man!
