Hi, just wanted to drop in and say a massive thank you for your kindness and amazing presentation! I was sat watching the realtime analytics slightly confused as the views went from 10 an hour channel wide to 500, then I checked the comments on the video that was bringing in the numbers and found my way here. Absolutely over the moon that you enjoy our content! For me, the event that got me into history was probably the Battle of Hastings in 1066, been to Battle Abbey and Bayeux in France to see the tapestry with my own eyes around 10 years back and since then, from a casual perspective, I've always enjoyed learning about and experiencing history through one avenue or another! - Ethan

Yeah I’d agree but it was the books instead. The author who wrote the series of books is close to where I’m from and if I remember correctly I think he donated books to local schools in order to help children learn history. Also, the ancient Egyptians at the same time. I remember my dad watching all of the ancient alien programmes and programmes on ancient Egypt in general. Same with the Romans.

I was a lazy high school student. Did the bare minimum outside of class, but always participated in class discussions and did well on exams. One of my teachers in 10th grade caught onto this, and during a "work on your own" time in class he took me out into the hallway and called me out on it. He ended the discussion by saying he was essentially kicking me out of his class...in order to place me in the higher level history class that was offered so I would have more of a challenge. That was probably the moment where my love of history first started, because I actually felt motivated after being called out like that and told I'd be able to handle more.

That’s awesome man, for me it was my 6th 7th and 8th grade history teacher. She taught history to all the middle school students in the STEM program so had 3 years to teach history instead of focusing around what she could fit in 1 year. So started with ancient history in 6th grade and told it like a story over the next 3 years to get to modern day in 8th grade. It was such a cool way to learn history as I was able to draw connections from one event to the next and made me realize how interconnected world history is

17:30 The historical event that made me into history, when I found out about Willem Daendels, the governor general of the Dutch East Indies during the Napoleonic era at that time (I'm from Indonesia) had been demonized by history books because at that time, he didn't pay natives when we worked on colonial project (making a road connecting the island of Java). As it turned out, he was actually paying the workers, but the local native ruler, and the local foreman at the time took the pay for themselves.

I had a National Geographic map of Vietnam on my bedroom wall, and I used to mark the places where he had been. My father was obsessed with visiting "hysterical markers" while on family vacations, so that was my first step in loving history. He'd go scores of miles out of the way just to check out a random historical site, much to my mother's eternal chagrin. However, the thing that really hooked me on history was the 1978 miniseries Centennial based on the book by James Michener. I just happened to be flipping through channels when it debuted and was instantly hooked. I still consider it one of the best films of all time and easily one of the most underrated. The cast was stellar, the story was amazing, and even though it was historical fiction, it was still did a remarkable job portraying the history of the American settlement of the west. In particular I really appreciated the fact that it didn't shy away from controversial topics and some of the uglier aspects of US history while also showing some of the most admirable aspects of the American character as well -- very well balanced for a movie of that era. I also loved that in addition to some of the things we normally expect from stories of the American West it also highlighted the impact of nature on history -- the scenes of the Great Die Up of 1886-87 and the Dust Bowl of the 1930s in particular were both epic in scope and demonstrated the way natural disasters can impact history. In fact, the role of natural disasters in human history is my primary area of focus as I finish my Masters in history and Centennial was what first drew my interest in that direction.

How I got into History: well it’s pretty simple, actually. I’m German and once I learned about WW2 and the Nazi Regime in history class I was hooked. I was fascinated with the structure, effectiveness and battle strategies of the Third Reich and how one extremist party managed to take over a whole country, rebuild/restructure it and then nearly defeat and dominate an entire continent. From there I broadened my historic scope first to WW1, then the Kaiserreich, then the Holy Roman Empire. Eventually I also broadened my geographic scope from Europe to America to Asia to the entire World.

I read a book about the Alamo, and then got to visit both the Alamo AND San Jacinto (where the war ended) in the same weekend. Learning about guys like William Barrett Travis, Jim Bowie, and Davy Crockett got me hooked.

3:03 The elephant that was hanged was “Murderous Mary.” On September 12, 1916, while performing at a circus in Sullivan County, Tennessee, she killed her abusive caretaker. The people that attended the show then immediately called for her to be killed, and they got their wish. On the 13th, Mary was hanged on top of Railroad tracks using a Derrick (a kind of railroad crane) and a large metal chain wrapped around her neck, which was ordered by the Circus owner who wanted to save his business. The town where it took place, Erwin, Tennessee, is still known as “the town that hung the elephant,” as many of the 2500 people attending the execution were residents of Erwin. There is a disputed photo of the aftermath of the execution that is easy to find on Google.

The person that got me into history was my great-aunt, related by marriage. She and her family were the gardeners for the Romanovs. She was the same age as Anastasia and would tell me all about her childhood friend. She even told me of how people reacted to the loss of the Titanic. Sadly she passed shortly before the movie was released, missing it by a few months. I was too young at the time to fully appreciate the stories she told me of her friend Anastasia. Nevertheless, the general theme of the stories is forever etched in my mind, especially how she would laugh when telling me of how Anastasia and her father, the Tasr, would prank the family and household staff until their stomachs hurt from laughter.

It's since gone on to be an actual class that counts as a history credit, which I was so glad to hear.

I think the thing that really got me into learning about history was 1. Learning about my grandfather on my mom's side who was an FO in the European theater of WWII, and 2. The museum visits that I would do with my parents sometimes when I was younger. There used to be an excellent WWII museum a few miles from where I live in Florida that unfortunately got shut down when the owner passed away, and I've been to the Air Force Armament Museum multiple times which is located up in the panandle. The Naval Aviation Museum in NAS Pensacola is also fantastic.

I live in Washington state and I remember doing a project in middle school where we did a “radio station and show” about the Lewis and Clark exploration. That was the start for me in my love for history. Another instance that solidified it for me was my junior year in high school we did a project on Ellis Island where every student was given a slip of paper which had all of our information as an immigrant and we had to “go through Ellis island.” Some didn’t get in but the whole project was fascinating to me. LOVE history

My music teacher in elementary school was really into Titanic too, and hosted model ship painting classes after school. I can't say for sure if that's what got me into history, but it's definitely what got me into shipwrecks. I've learned so many fascinating/sad/terrifying stories that deserve to be every bit as well known as TItanic.

Gonna be honest, Titanic was also the event that brought me into history. in Kindergarten I saw a book of ships and in it was this massive ship stretched across both pages. It brought me down the giant rabbit hole of Titanic and now History like this so I can see how Titanic can spring historians into the field of History. Great job Chris, love your work.

What got me into history: my father was a grammar school teacher who mainly taught 5th grade American History. So we had a lot of books at home, including the series "Golden Book History of the United States," published in 1963/1964. Alton S. Tobey illustrated the entire series, especially before WW1, as photographs were nearly non-existent before then. His art was amazing and so dynamic, I almost didn't need the writing by famed historian Earl Schenk Miers, who authored the series.

When I was little and sitting at the breakfast table my dad explained to me how Hannibal marched over the alps with elephants. His description of Romans fighting in a checkerboard and having these elephants crashing through them was the moment I realized I loved history. It was something so fantastical but real. The memory always makes me smile.

What got my into history? In 4th grade I wasn't much of a reader, but I did read comic books. My father, wanting me to read more, got me a book, written to my age, on Greek mythology. Not only did these stories, that read like ancient Greek comic books, work to make me read, but the sparked an interest in the history of the Bronze Age.

The event that got me into history was probably the Battle of Hastings and as for the 80 to 81 soldiers, yeah they were just guarding a mountain pass so nothing of any note, and the friend they made was an Italian. As for the Dancing Plague, it's horrifying in that we still have no idea to this day what caused it, so no way to prevent a reoccurrence sometime.

To answer your question at 17:30… it was also the titanic. My parents took me to see the titanic exhibit in San Francisco, when I was about 5 years old. I still remember seeing the silverware, plates, and i think a pair of shoes that were brought up from the debris field. However the biggest thing that I remember: was the piece of Titanic’s hull that was brought up and put on display. My dad picked me up and leaned me over the border-rope-thingy so I could touch that piece of the hull with my hand; I’ll never forget that. The RMS Titanic was the first historical topic that I was seriously interested in after that day.

Pretty good video. As for what brought me into history, I always liked it, but as for the jumpstart of it, well... videogames. As a teenager I was playing what I considered a random samurai game one day, and looked up some of the characters on the internet for hints. Turns out I got wikipedia pages about actual historical figures, it kinda blew my mind that those people were actually real in a way, made me want to turn the internet upside down to know more about the characters and the period. It not only made me appreciate the game more, but now I have considerable knowledge about the period. A few years later I had a similar experience with Assassin's Creed II and since then learning more about history became a beloved hobby, including history that isn't directly related to some form of violence xD

As a teenager, I read the Margaret Mitchell's "Gone With the Wind." The life she described was so completely foreign to me, that I could not believe the setting of the novel was less than 100 years before the year of my birth. My grandmother (born in 1911) lived until her 95th year, and I realized that people who were born during the Civil War could still have been around when I was born in 1960. For some reason, this put all of history in perspective for me. My grandmother was born before the first flight of the Wright brothers, before women could vote, before indoor plumbing and electricity were widely available. Horse drawn vehicles were the most common form of travel the year she was born. But she lived to see the moon landing, home computers, and she herself travelled many times on airplanes. When one realizes the difference that can happen even during one lifetime, well, I've been fascinated with history ever since.

what got me into history? I'm Canadian. my dad was in the CND army. we lived in Germany from when I was 6-9. We camped all over Europe in those 3 years as my parents introduced us to all the history before and around us. from trekking up to the crater of Mount Vesuvius and then exploring Pompeii, to visiting the sites of battles from hundreds of years ago and battles from 15 years before we were there. We spent 6 weeks every year learning about the history and cultures of western Europe. that hooked me for life!!

Even though the battle itself wasnt as big as others in the war I still have a greater appreciation for the battlefield and those who fought in it.

I got into history around 7 years old. The author of the horrible histories series is local to where I’m from and if I remember correctly he gave books to local schools in order to learn about history. Around the same time in school we started learning about the great fire of London, the romans and the ancient Egyptians. We have an old Roman fort in our town which I visited and my dad also used to watch lots of ancient Egyptian programmes like ancient aliens lol.

Three months late to the party, but you asked what got us into history. For me, it was how school practically skipped World War 1. The teaching was "the Archduke was assassinated, mustard gas was used, now onto WW2." I'm really not exaggerating much there. So questions about why every country jumped into the war, why America finally got involved... A drive to figure that out was what got me interested in history.
